    I genuinely don't understand why Filmento is getting so much hate, I've watched almost every video he's made, and in every single one he has made justifiable praise or criticism for whatever he might be talking about. I'm constantly nodding my head in agreement at least once or twice in every video. As somebody who has spent most of their early life learning about film and TV and studying it. He makes valid, strong arguments. While I might not agree with every single detail I acknowledge that Filmento has his own opinion. And that's fine. I know that this is the internet and people get pissy about everything. But any haters reading this. Fuck yourself and give the guy some space. He doesn't deserve hate from you just because you disagree with what he said in a video. If you don't like his content, then go, don't watch him again. Just be the better man/woman and leave him be.
    He undoubtedly puts a lot of effort into his videos as do most content creators on youtube. So respect that, and if you don't like him. Leave. I get that quarantine is boring, but maybe you could find another pass-time that doesn't involve making other people's lives misery!

      @Black Ninja He's not saying he disagrees with particular points in this video, only in general. As do I.
      For example, I still think a "A day in the life of" sequence is not strictly neccesary to be at the very beginning of a film/story. I believe it can just as well come at a later date with the same effect.
      The only genuine thing that matters in any good story is execution and result. If something is satisfactory (in the sense that it is entertaining, not in the sense that it is "adequate"), then that something fits in the story. An ADITL sequence might just work later on as well.
      One may also argue that ADITL acts as a "baseline" and nothing more. That is to say, it gives us the context we need. As such, different things might provide that context, without neccesary being strung together in a single comprehensible sequence.
      That said, a single ADITL sequence is an effective tool, and putting it at the beginning of your film/story is effective, if done properly. I just don't believe it is strictly neccesary for every imaginable story.
      For classic hero's journey/action blockbuster films, it does work, though.

    A Day in Life is just a reference frame to contrast with. It can be anything to establish the norm. I thought that's self explanatory.
    Did Underwater showed us a reference frame to contrast with? Now that's the bigger question..

    • @lkf8799
      @lkf8799 4 роки тому +5

      That's usually to create contrast and conflict between characters and push the plot which most movies do and do well and which I appreciate for the setups and payoffs in the story.
      Underwater didn't do that because all the characters cooperated which is very unusual for a disaster/monster movie but it didn't really hurt the story as much as you would expect - Mostly because there were some good performances and the director made some great artistic choices - I think Filmento was too harsh on Underwater but I'm a big fan of this channel - Great content and insight into movie making and very entertaining. His point is valid - There was no day in the life to help you easily connect to the charcter/set expectations.
      I saw a video recently on a character not having an arc which breaks story-telling rules and that's very hard to do successfully, too. Think it was on the Just Write UA-cam channel.

    Day in the life sequences are good because seeing the status quo can show or at least foreshadow a character's mindset, including values and flaws, and gives a much more intimate lens through which we see the rest of the story, because we have a better understanding of what they're fighting for. They're also good opportunities for relatability/save the cat type stuff.

    As much as you can learn a lot from failure, I really enjoyed this as a more positive explanation of when something is done right. I went back to watch the Underwater video on the back of this, despite having not seen the film. The section on how the protagonists should really be responsible for the inciting incident kind of made me think of The Thing, with the initial release of the Thing being already set in motion by the Norwegian Camp. I guess there the difference is the film is about much more than survival, focusing on mistrust and paranoia, with the inciting incident from our protagonists point of view being to shoot the Norwegian instead of trying to figure out what their intentions were.

The Joker Heist is an Opening Performance, because everything we see from the Joker is a Performance. He's got "LOOK AT ME!" Painted all over his face. This is an escalation of the Theatrics, and Deception of Batman Begins. The League of Shadows taught him 101. This is the next level of Theatrics, and Deception, and it's written all over the heist as well. He tricks his henchmen into killing each other off. He stops to plant the smoke grenade in the banker's mouth. That wasn't part of the plan, he had a smoke grenade with the pin tied to his sweater for that gag. "Do I look like a guy with a plan?" Love the channel. Along with the fans and the “haters”.

    I like how people on twitter think countering one of the arguments you make in a video with a half-thought discredits not only the entire video, but also your entire channel. And what is worse is it actually seems to work sometimes. If that hurts to watch I can't imagine what must go through your head brother. Stay strong

    I’ve learned more about writing stories from this UA-cam channel about filmmaking than I did after most of my childhood language arts classes. Thanks for all the help, Filmento.
