Found the thumb is a better trigger as it allows pressure to remain on the fingers. The thumb should remain "soft" or loose. Learnt this from Dick Ritger on his coaching visits to Oz. Dick did not agree with the triggered release but i found it worked for me when i was competing. The triggered release helps with slight accurate variations in release point. There is a simple way to develop this action.
I've been watching video after video lately about this release but all I keep hearing is "snap" at the release, or frisbee, or relaxed wrist, etc. but this is the first and only time I heard anything about "when" this happens. Thank you for the "elbow at the waist" trigger along with the index finger release. Makes perfect sense and (for me at least) gives me a perfect visual que.
The pressure of the index finger on the ball came naturally for me that I didn't even think about that way , just felt more comfortable for my two handed release
This 65 year old bowler has been bowling in leagues since 1979. That was before we had a lot of rotation and it didn't have the same impact. So I don't believe in a lot of rotation. Rather, I believe in just the right amount of rotation - enough to turn the corner and be accelerating when entering the pocket but not so much the shot becomes inaccurate. I don't do wrist snapping like young bowlers, I keep my wrist fixed and use follow through to obtain rotation. Yes, that does lose some power but I make up for it by throwing 16 pounds relatively hard. It works for me. In league last Tuesday I got a 223-267-300 for a 790.
@@ArtOfBowling For years my favorite was the Marvel Pearl. But my high stakes 40 team league (limited by the number of lanes) puts down a lot of oil so I mostly use stronger balls. Last Tuesday I started with my AstroPhysix but struggled and changed to my Axiom Pearl in the 4th frame of the first game. After that 5 shots weren't strikes. I got the Axiom Pearl because it is symmetric like the Marvel Pearl but stronger. It has yielded three 700s in the last eight weeks of league and I finished 9th in the City Tournament singles. Today's balls are amazingly powerful, especially compared to my first ball - a Johnny Petraglia LT-48.
If you watch most pro bowlers hand as they talk you will notice that the fingers are in the position they would be in the ball. Fingers in ball locked, supporting fingers pressing firmly against the ball and the thumb "soft" not squeezing. This feel is extended to the top of the swing. Developing this as being fully automatic muscle memory will lead to higher scores.
Great tips, coach! Also, did Art of Brooklyn wake up on the wrong side of the bed today? He was warned twice to not flash "that finger" at us! Anyway, I've always struggled with gaining more revs when I turn the ball early, curl my wrist up, or un-cup my wrist a moment too soon. This video definitely helps out with when it should happen!
I like high revs. makes for a lot of fun hooking and striking off the 1 board from the 6th arrow. I am actually currently working on learning to control rev rate, to take some or a lot out, it's frustrating when having high revs but cannot keep the speed up to match late in a block when the lanes are beat up and you are getting your tail kicked by the guy who uses the same ball for everything and only ever has to move 2 boards with a rev rate of about 150 lol
@Garrett Bailey I do watch all of his videos on hand position, and practice different positions for different zones and lane conditions, but for me some of the hand positions (mostly straighter and inside 2nd arrow) get really tough for me because I'm so used to 500+ revs just coming off my hand. But when I can take some revs out, the up the back shots become controllable and repeatable and the hook doesn't get too wild as the lanes burn up. So basically I use the high revs on fresh, then taper off as the lane conditions dictate. I guess I was trying to say that a bowler who can master the lower rev rate, then add revs but retain the ability to return to the lower revs when needed would be a useful tool.
I'm that guy you're talking about in the last line. But trust me, my lack of rotation takes me out of A LOT of tournaments. I have the accuracy, but accuracy is all I got.
Some ppl just don’t have high revs tho. Not bragging but I have a high revs. From the moment I first worked with a coach. That was the fist thing he said was Holy shit you have a high revs I didn’t even know what he was talking about. Some ppl have it and some ppl don’t.
90 degrees of axis rotation is not ideal... think of the fact that we want the ball rolling into the pocket at a 6 degree angle... that on a 40 long pattern happens at the 9 board...look at that distance from the back of the approach to the foul line it is not as big of a turn as you might think...with a 90 degree of axis rotation you won't get the ball into a full roll through the pins...
Have you done any videos on the thumb sticking violently in the ball? This has caused me wrist injuries multiple times now and I just can't figure out why.
I noticed you don't wear bowling shoes. What is your advice or input on bowling shoes and the need for a sliding foot? I plant myself but for some reason feel the need to have expensive Dexter shoes LOL.
Planting is many many degrees better than sliding since it takes approaches out of play completely, but it puts a LOT more pressure on your knees. I also plant. I don't wear bowling shoes but I do have a pair on hand in case someone on my pair brings it up.
@@SirJoelsuf1 That's how I feel. I never fouled in 30+ years of bowling. I never slipped or fell. I am never looking down at my feet on a bad shot as if a bug on the approach ruined everything LOL. I think bad knees is genetic or something else. I also run marathons and squat pretty heavy. No knee issues ever. I don't quit come to a complete stop, but definitely don't do the Parker Bohn slide hah.
How about a guy that has started using a Sarge Easter Grip ? My ring finger has no 1st knuckle (broke it in high school & it was pinned). Used to use my pinky but can’t get it to come off my hand right Some advice would help. Enjoy your channel
art i have a question im 64 yrs old and this yr has not been a very good season so far im around a 170-175 avg bowler. this yr im at 160. its been awful. the problem im having is as im coming thru the ball at the release at the foul line im dropping the ball of my hand as it hits the lane. also my arm swing has been very bad. i was using 15lbs last yr then mid way thru the season last yr i went to 14lbs. i had some new stuffed drilled and it felt like the span was to long. then when i was in ohio i stopped at wwcb in columbus ohio. i had tom carter look at my stuff he said it was to long . so i had a couple of new balss drilled up by him. he shortin the span and drilled my thumb hole with zero pitch. im still having the same problem .i try using a wrist device but its not very comfitble. i really dont know what i should do. i signed up to go to a bowl-u class weekend sestion next month. i just hope its not a waste of 250 dollars. . also im at the point where im ready to walk out of the center and left my stuff there for anyone to take. what should i do

Yes high revs isn’t something that can be taught you have high rev or you just improve on what you have.
First time I've ever heard when to do it instead of just how thanks.

I would say we should just focus with 90 degrees axis rotation first, cupped and uncup release we can put last.
