    Incredible flight! In Europe, they tape their PDA"s to the $250,000 glider's window :)
    Were you worried about getting stuck above the clouds? It seemed like they really filled in below you. Were there windows through the clouds we couldn't see in the video? Nice work!!!!

      There are alway gaps and escape routes. I would not fly on-top without a clear plan B, C etc. Usually the clouds fill in and build up from on the luv-side of the mountain. This leaves you with less clouds and tailwind for your escape. I had to use this twice during this flight. You can see the second time at 6:49 in the video. And yes... tape... It's what holds the glider together, right? ;)

    Fantastic flight! I would appreciate seeing the video without the accelerated portions. Also please comment on the performance of the Arcus T.

      Hi Tom. The footage without the acceleration is several hours. Which parts would you like to see in particular? The Arcus T performs nicely. Especially, when it comes to higher speeds it handles well and allows you to fly far rather fast :)

    The Arcus T is the best 20m twin seater glider ever we also have one

    The next step in gliding is to make it useful, not just enjoyable.
    To that end it must be able to sleep two people and have solar panels and an electric motor. The wheels should be detachable and used as mono-wheels on the ground. This will aid the glider to get airborne and the batteries are stored in the the wheel.
    Water can be captured from the air as condensate, so that the ballast tanks are filled at altitude.
    This will do until we dispense with Einstein's "Bent Nothingness" folly and capture the true mechanism of gravity (An epiphenomenon of voltage)
    Then flying will become as exciting as getting in an elevator.

    That was awesome. I hope to experience this one day.
    How dangerous is this really? I'm now a solo pilot (3 flights on my own as of now), but during training had a massive scare where we clipped a tree and almost didn't make it back to the airfield (not my fault!). Since then I see danger everywhere: I'm thinking possible rotor airflow, not many outlanding possibilities, not finding lift, ...
    I think I just need to regain the confidence and fly more.

      Build in margins. Are the condition such that you might find significant sink around the airport? Bring another 50-100m of height in and brake/slip any excess on base/final. You can always cut corners on patterns when the option is hitting the ground, that's the whole point of it. If you're not confident in how adjust your pattern for the conditions on hand, have an instructor teach you! There is zero shame in landing out! If you do a normal safe outlanding, even if the glider is damaged for some annoying reason, that's OK. Trying to get home/to the next promising area on too little height and wreck a plane and/or hurt yourself is the only thing you should be worried about avoiding. You don't need "many outlanding possibilities", if you have known outlanding fields where you are confident there will be no animals, hay bales, or other obstacles, one *can* be enough. Two-three fair ones within a short distance of each other are usually more than sufficient. If it's not part of your curiculum, ask to do an outlanding with an instructor if you're worried about it, that might help you a lot.

      @@maggus999 But he did 1150km. He can't possibly know every field. It's my inexperience talking I guess...
      I know there is zero shame in landing out. Safety over all :) the situation was that we had a strong tailwind downwind, with a second glider just in front and below us. The instructor told me to do a 360° turn to aid with separation of the two aircraft on final, which I did nicely. After that I noticed our altitude, and wanted to turn towards the runway and fly OVER the other aircraft and land further ahead (we had 2.5km of runway to do that) as I saw the other guy barely made it. The instructor told me to fly further, instead of turning to base. I did it, as I'm not PIC and am inexperienced -> when I finally turned base, i saw some houses that I'm used to flying over, and they looked conspicuously big from the cockpit... at that point he took over, dove down to gain speed and then used that speed to pull up over a row of trees, as there was no possible landing place within gliding distance. At one point I couldn't even see the airport anymore. Scary stuff :D
      So flying over mountains seems really daunting to me now, but I'd love to experience it as it was video's like these that made me want to start flying in the first place. Too bad you can't really show up to an airfield and pay for an instruction flight, as those usually last 30 minutes or so. That's not enough to really go flying in ridge or wave lift and learn how it all works.
      But I'll get there. Could be 2025 though ;)

      @@PJH1111 If you build it up slowly, it's not dangerous. You don't have to know every field, if you are flying high. In the alps, you can almost always reach an airfield if you are above 3'000 meters. So, you just need to know the fields when you are lower. For the 1150 km, I needed to know 2 fields. The rest was within a save distance to an airfield.

      @@YvesGerster "if you are flying high". I guess that's the difference, the highest I've seen is 1050m AGL. I'm from Belgium and have only flow local and in thermals, so it is indeed inexperience talking. You are talking about 3000m and more, so that should be plenty of range :)

    What I want to know is: You already have the most perfect flight computer of all time, built into the panel: the LXNav. And then you tape an Ewwwwwwdee onto the canopy? You did that because you wanted a backup flight recorder?

    • @YvesGerster
      @YvesGerster  4 роки тому +1

      I really wish, there was a more elegant way in this glider to hold the second flight computer, but there just is not (yet). I like to fly with XCSoar, since I am used to this. Also in order to make decisions its good to have a couple of screens at the same time. (zoomed in, zoomed out, airspace statistics etc.).
      By the way, did you know about Aquila? :)

      @@YvesGerster Have you found a solution yet? The previous owner of my 505 made a bracket and I've modified it to fit my RAM mount, which holds anything that looks close to a cell phone. I'd imagine it would hold the Oudie also, but you could obviously make a bracket for the Oudie clip. It's just on top of the fuselage where the air vent is, so it kind of works out.

    • @YvesGerster
      @YvesGerster  2 роки тому

      @@TheSoaringChannel I have a bracket on the JS1. You can see it here: ua-cam.com/video/EBxK8tdnOt8/v-deo.html
      This one is quite nice, because it can also charge the Oudie, and play music over the radio. However, I don't have space in the DG400 for this additional instrument.
