- It's winter in New Zealand, and we're all itching to fly. Today we had a very soft 13knot ridge flying day, in this video we show how we navigate the ridge through the tricky bits.
Glider: Ventus cT in with 18m wingtips.

hi... I flew in the 80s with the Auckland gliding club, loved the Kiamias, got to 18000 feet in easterly wave once in a K8 , got my gold height, noisy baragraph ticking away, no oxygen, radio, parachute, we had Nada back then lol... landed back at matamata in the dark, cars had to shine their lights for me, those where the days, enjoying reliving my ridge days with you, subbed, happy landings :)
Hi Stephanie, thanks for watching and thanks for sharing the vid!
Thanks Tim, certainly a good reminder of where the lifty bits might be found..
Glad it was useful :)
Thoroughly enjoyed coming along for the ride Tim. Nice to see home from above :-).
Hey thanks Richard! Glad you liked it. Where is your house again? I’ll text next time I’m over
Thanks for taking us along on another great flight Tim. I am amazed how you can do so much in such light conditions .
Thanks Colin, it all came down to the tow. The 18m wings help too :) They give 49:1 compared to the PW5's 32:1
Pure Glide, you're my new BALLEKA with commentary!!! Absolutely superb, thank you!!!!
Well that's very kind of you to say, obviously I'm a big fan of BALLEKA too! I often think what if he had the modern 4k cameras we have today, he was ahead of his time :)
It’s nice to learn with you! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Bloody great Tim...loved the commentary. T.
Thanks Tony!
Excellent stuff. Nice commentary from which it is easy to pick up useful tips. I wish we had more ridges in the UK like yours.
Thank you kindly!
Awesome Tim, Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
another great journey. lovely scenery. your still a lucky man!!
Thanks Terry!
From my Paragliding experience, where you have a bowl in the ridge, best lift is often in the centre of the bowl (not on the downwind rim). Almost works like a chimney.
So try overflying the centre of the bowls next time.
Agreed, bowls are the best! I think I should have used the "Paeroa Bowl" in this before getting back, but I can't remember.
@@PureGlide I should add: The "chimney effect" works best in stronger wind and for smaller bowls.
Very cool. Thaw commentary is really cool, always learn quite a bit from you videos Tim, keep them coming!
Was flirting with the idea of going out but thought it was far too light... I imagine it would’ve been for the poooooch!
Thanks Chase! Yeah it was too light until about 3pm, the main part of the ridge was working OK after then. So bit marginal. Sat looks light as well, but similar, and Sunday might be a better ridge day too with Westerlies.
Thanks Tim. Good stuff for chaps like me who are about to get into gliding at Matamata and am looking forward to getting time on the Kaimai ridge!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your hat......
Thanks that got me through some tough flights :)
I absolutely love your videos and despite just passing my PPL (A) after 7 years of stop start (due to money and an intense fear of flying) and not flying a glider, I find your videos so informative about how you catch lift and plan your routes. Nice one,.
Thanks very much! Glad you are enjoying them, we'll get you into a glider eventually :)
Contests are won on the weak days kept running through my mind as I felt my pulse elevating.
Exactly right :)
I'm usually viewing soaring over Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado. The climate, of course, is totally different. But soaring is quite the same on the opposite side of the globe. It's interesting how even the clouds look the same, and the air feels similar. Thanks, pardner!
Hey thanks for watching! Probably the main difference is 3500’ cloud base is a common day here :) although up to 6000 sometimes!
That was fantastic! Great information and well put together, thanks for sharing and subscribed for sure! Hard to find good gliding video's with good commentary. Wish I'd found your channel sooner than today ha ha!
Hey thanks very much! Only started the channel a few months ago, and lots more coming especially when we get into Summer!
@@PureGlide You are most welcome! You have a fantastic channel in one of my biggest passions in life! Aviation. For anyone who hasn't flown a glider please try it even if it's only a passenger flight if that's all you can handle. such an amazing experience but even more so when your'e on the controls yourself! Thanks for the reply mate and happy soaring!
Hi Tim, really enjoy following all the videos you post. Did gliding back in the late 70's into mid 80's and then the family started taking up the time so gliding had to take a back seat. Hoping to start again soon, now I'm retired. What is the App you're using in this particular video on your phone. RHS of the cockpit. Fly here in Cape Town South Africa. Adrian
Hi thanks Adrian! Glad to hear you might get back into it. On my phone I’m using the Gliding NZ tracking website gliding.net.nz/tracking and also the SeeYou Navigator app. Cheers!
Thanks for making this. In commentary on the thought process during the flight plus descriptions on conditions was great. when you mention 2000 feet is that AGL or MSL?
Thanks! Sorry can’t remember, most of that land at the base of the ridge is near sea level anyway, 200 feet or so, so not a lot of difference
Ta, Tim. This is useful for early pilots on the Kaimais, or any ridge, in fact.
Cheers!
I've been binge watching your videos since discovering your channel a month or so ago, just wanted to say thanks for creating such informative and interesting content Tim! I am about to join a local gliding club with the aim of having my very first trial flight and a determination to work towards going solo! I have already learned such a great deal from your channel so thanks again! If you were to give me 5 pieces of key advice to get me going what would they be?
Great to hear it! yes watch all the ads ALL OF THEM muah ha haa. No that's great to hear. 5 pieces of key advice, good question, that would be a GREAT video topic. I have been thinking about asking experienced pilots for their key advice... stay tuned!
Just a few I can think of:
Don't muck around in the crap.
Be kind to your mother.
"No cloud, no lift" (only valid if it's a day that thermals make clouds)
While flying, look up at the clouds.
While flying, look ahead at the weather.
Fly lots. You'll get better at picking your way through the weather over time.
@@PureGlide Yay! Can't wait for that! I'll look forward to my shout out!! ;)
@@PureGlide haha thanks Tim! :) I'm going to start a new channel dedicated to my journey and will be sure to share it once it's up and running. :)
My new channel is here if you fancy following my journey! www.youtube.com/@thermicdreams
It would be interesting to see the sustainer engine started and climb rate achieved. Nice video.
Hi check out this video, I use the engine a few times in the first half! ua-cam.com/video/aRV__EkyyuI/v-deo.html It climbs generally about 1.6-1.8 knots
@@PureGlide That you, very interesting. I fly an SZD-55 and am thinking of getting a used sustainer/18m in the next year. You're lucky to have a mild winter, here in southern Canada we're looking at 45 cms over two storms in the next week. It should melt by late April... Nice finish on the Ventus Ct!
Very nice, is it possible to project the vario, airspeed and altitude instruments in the corner right under in the screen.
That will be very interesting .
Very difficult as I edit a lot of footage together to make the video. It would be good though!
Thank you so much for these great teaching demonstrations. As a novice, I have trouble visualizing your track over ground sometimes and especially the wind direction, even though you physically point it out multiple times per video. Is there any way to display this info, for example using your flight computer or a heading indicator superimposed on the video? Also, what software do you use for flight planning and once again, indicating wind direction? Maybe a session devoted to software and inflight tracking would be great. Wonderful stuff. Best from Kentucky USA
Hey thanks for the feedback! Yeah it’s tricky to edit in the locations, but will try something in the future
And yes expect more videos in the future on software and tracking!
I really enjoy your videos - makes me wanne go back to NZ (Im from Denmark) I can see you work in feet and knots, but is that the norm in NZ? I remember (I think) you also use kph and meters?
Thanks! See the previous comment I just answered re units
Nice vid. An explanation of what tools you use to know that below 1500 feet was bad would make for a good vid.
Well it’s a general rule that wind decreases near the ground due to turbulence. In this case it’s also winter so we have cold stable air down low that can cause the upper windy air to skim over the ground completely. I’ve landed in still air before while watching higher gliders staying up happily! But yes videos on weather forecasting will be coming!
@@PureGlide thanks for the reply!
Interesting 18m tips. never seen those on a ventus C model. thought they only had 17.6 tips
Thank you for noticing! They are unusual 18m winglets. I’ll be making a video about them soon, as there is nothing on the internet about them.
@@PureGlide You're 18m winglet was certified by schempp hirth?
@@TheKingair96 There must have been acceptable technical data from Schempp Hirth to enable the modification to a type certified aircraft in New Zealand. But I'm not an expert on how these things work.
Tim, How are you!
I am a brazilian former hang glider pilot.
I Wonder How you got the Wind Speed during the flight, without make turns, It is an app?
Hi yes it’s my app, but during this flight I didn’t have the latest “hawk” technology, so it was unlikely that I be very accurate. Now it is. See my videos about “hawk” to see how it works now
How the sound ''te te te te ''of the glider work? pls make a vedio about it..
Yeah that's the electronic variometer, I will be making a video about them soon!
@@PureGlide Thank you so much
Type glider?
Ventus CT I think
Ventus cT. Thanks for watching!
@@nob0dy27_ A freshly refinished cT, in which even the fuel tank is highly polished - just like the pilot's performance!
Two audio varios?
Yeah I added one as part of the LX and am selling the original
@@PureGlide One of them sounded like the Tasman V1000 that I had in a Libelle many years ago. Would that be right? (S80 in a DG303 these days.) Enjoying your videos.
Isn't it summer in NZ?
It sure is! This video is not recent
@@PureGlide i think it's unbelievably funny that australia always has to invert everything
Tim, can you please start identifying your land-out locations and why you picked them. I know you have a sustainer but if it doesn't work, your ass is grass, just like the rest of us in "pure" gliders.
Yeah that’s a whole topic in itself. And yes I definitely always have a possible paddock picked out when using my engine! It’s only a matter of time until it doesn’t work for some reason
Can you explain the vario and the noises it makes in your next video?
You're in luck I was literally half way through making a video about Variometers. I hadn't thought to include the different noises in particular, a good idea!
Its like running a business, with height gain and loss equivalent to profit and loss!
Yeah exactly right!
