Well yes, I used to do side bends which were exactly of no use for me and I did not find any result while doing the same but most importantly when I started strength training along with a balanced diet where I cut off my carbs the most along with Roti/Chawal (used to have it once after 7 days), I started to gain results with respect to love handles and they started to lower down and did the fat from every where. no I do such a mistake, especially with eating just before workout. This happens because I go to workout directly after office three days a week, and I land there extremely hungry. So I eat mostly jhalmuri (puffed rice with cucumber, peanuts, onion peices mixed with mustard oil) just to ward off that hugry feeling.
