What happens when your gas gauge is not working, or your oil pressure gauge or your temp gauge? You get frustrated. Honestly, its not that difficult to determine where the problem is and its inexpensive to fix it. After hearing my customers complain about this problem I came up with this three video series covering this.. Hope this helps!

Hi Chris, I own a lovely well kept Mustang 66, the Amps meter does not show anything, but I have owned the car or over two and a half years and know that it,s charging and never had a problem in that sense only that it does not show the charge or discharge through the amps meter.
I took the whole dash cluster off and had the Amps gauge checked and was told it works just fine, I disconnect the two wires from the amps meter and omhs test the red one through and external wire directly to the + post on the starter solenoid and its positive, then the yellow to the alternator and it also was good (ohms).
Next step I attach the equivalent of the red wire and yellow wire (not the originals) to the Amps gauge send red one to starter solenoid positive and yellow to alternator, reconnect the battery , turn the key on (as I turn on headlamps IT WORKS showing a negative indication) then star the car an the needle goes "so high to charge that it wants to hide there somewhere", it also flickers and as I run the engine for a while starts coming back as though it's charging OK but the flickering continues. Also the battery was completely charged so it should have shown a partial charge and no flickering needle ? so I'm worried about rewiring and have put all back to what it was and I have no Amps meter showing anything, back to were I started. Pls help if you could, Thanks John Mackenzie

Hi, Its an Amp meter not a Volt meter. Meaning the needle will stay in the center or just to the right of center when everything is fine. Amps are constant. If there is a problem it will go just to the left of center. A volt meter needle will move up & down with the RPMs because volts fluctuate. Put everything back together your fine ;)

Hi Chris, I have this problem on my 66 buick wildcat. My original fuel gauge pegs out on full. I brought a new sunpro fuel gauge and now its doing the same thing over. Do you have a detailed suggestion?

A dummy question but, you want the key on when checking the sending unit, so you're saying leave the battery connected as well.

Your starting to scare me :) If you are checking to see if there is current going to the wire then you are going to have to have the key in the "On" position... The car does not have to be running. Make sure there are no little kids around and have a fire extinguisher handy too..

haha, Thanks I know, dummy question. I did it and I got NOTHING, so perhaps I have a bad wire....what should I check next?

when I say did it, i mean, i turned on the key and stuck the volt meter in the temp sending unit connector and got no pulse, do you think thats bad wire? What would be my next check from there?

Hi John. The next step would be to start dismantling the instrument cluster. For this I would get the car to someone that knows classic car electrical near you...

Okay, I took off the dash, and found the voltage limiter rigged into a ground circuit and the circuit board with a shoddy solder job, so, I ordered a brand new circuit board and replaced the board as well as a new electronic voltage limiter, electronic voltage regulator and fuselink box on the firewall. No change. I'm at a loss.
