I used to read the vanilla Game manual on the toilet when I was younger, every. single. day. It said in the rules that you arent allowed to name a character after something in-game, I remember seeing an Undead Warrior called Azeroth and my young petty ass self reported him.
12:10 now everything is either purple, purple, or purple + few legendaries here and there :P Oh you want to gear up and get that awesome blue item from an instance? Here, have this purple instead while running around doing some random daily activity and just so you don't feel like you actually had to do anything for it, take another, on the house! :D
The ranged slot was actually pretty important for warriors, as that was what you used for pulling, and there were times when it was also handy in PvP, when people were fleeing or when you for one reason or another did not want to get close. Bodypulling was frowned upon.
I used to take my manual to school every day. I was so hype to try the game out (I started during TBC) that I read the manual every day so I was prepared. The rogue was my most anticipated class.
As a warrior I owned a set of paladin gear, just for the intellect, as well as looked for weapons with intellect on them to level alllll those weapon skills. I like to believe it made a difference.
I remember Atack power modifiers being as follows in the TBC (didn't play the vanilla myself): Warrior, Paladin, Shaman (until WotLK), Druid, Priest, Mage, Warlock: *2 AP per STR* Rogue: *1 AP per STR, 1 AP per AGI* Hunter: *same as Rogue, but also 2ranged AP per AGI* Feral druid (cat): *Same as regular druid + 1 AP per AGI* Shamans had the worst itemization back then, as basically any TBC mail physical dmg rare/epic gear (except tier sets) was based around hunters, so all AGI, no STR, which resulted in no AP besides the one allready present on gear as separate secondary stat. But they were also kinda OP, so they didn't suffer from the horrible itemization that much :)
As a warrior I used ranged a good bit, pulling single mobs from groups, and getting a hit in on a fleeing person in pvp (sometimes getting the kill.) Not to mention looked badass and I miss my warrior boomstick.
Your video inspired me to dig out my collector's edition manual. I'll go over it later to see if there's any differences between the two besides the fancy cover and back.
I think going over the removed, added and changed racial abilties could be interesting. Everything from the weapon skills to Human Perception to Dwarf treasure finder.
Wands, especially those with frost magic where used in Ahn'Qiraj for Viscidus. The mechanics of the boss where set so that you had to apply a certain amount (or hits) of frost magic in order to freeze the slime boss. You then had to break the ice with the slime within with only physical hits which made everyone (even casters and healers) get close to the boss and hit with auto attack.
I miss Trainers tbh :/ It was cool and some of them where pretty interessting. I mean, maybe have Trainers per 10 lvls... so you go to the Trainer and fpr 10 Levels you automatically learn your crap - 20 go again repeat.
I should mentioned you had the attack power part of vanilla incorrect. There were two types of attack power. Melee attack power that strength ruled except for rogues if I recall correctly. (spells like battle shout only raised melee attack power) and Range attack power or RAP that Hunters got 2 RAP per agility. In BC I think is when they made attack power the same so that is why they lowered the Attack Power agility gave.
Beast Hunters liked intelligence and also mana and heal armor because their strengh came from their pet leading to some of them having a pet heal equipment. I remember a video from my early days in vanilla from a hunter who took on a neutral boss blue dragon (forgot the name) which back then walked around Aszhara (which wasn't a starting or even a big questing zone then). Took him ...only... two or three hours to kill that dragon but during all the time he just healed his pet while it did and took all the damage from the boss dragon. I don't remember how many players where usual needed to down that dragon but it was quite a lot.
You can also get experience from 100-110 by doing specific follower missions in your order hall, if you successfully complete the mission you get an item that gives you like 50k xp
Also, spell skills were *kinda* in game; some mobs in Shadowfang Keep applied a curse that would lower a random skill by 100, which included spell skills
Class skills wasn't just for stuff like holy magic. It also applied to Rogue lockpicking, which was in the original game. I don't remember which expansion pack they removed the skill level, but you used to have to level up lockpicking to even be able to open up different lockboxes. Rogues could earn tips by unlocking boxes in the trade window as players would be able to put them in the "will not be traded" slot and Rogues could apply their lockpicking skill to it in the trade window. While I did play in the first open beta test and the stress test, I'm pretty sure I remember losing experience when dying in early vanilla WoW, not just in the beta test. I also remember getting resurrection sickness from the spirit healer back in vanilla from the very start. I almost always played solo, so I almost never had a party member available to resurrect me.
I remember seeing a warrior out-roll a pally on a cloth drop in UBRS because he needed to skill up maces or something. The pally was pissed and they argued for like 20 minutes before the pally finally ragequit. There were two priests in the group too. They didn't cry about it...
u used wand as caster against rogue in cloak of shadow cause it was physical dmg + he could not leave combat when u hited him and it was super useful against warrior s spell reflect if u had procd fingers of frost and u did not want to waste it by using ice lance + if u were out of mana ofc : D
@@Hijackerrr rogues stay in combat even if you didn't actually hit them. no need to wand for that purpose either. somehow i remember them not doing physical damage tho... iirc they did their corresponsive damage in magic.
psh i used wands in BGs back in the day when some priest would drop mana burn on me from his hiding spot. I would curse and rage at the time but to think back lol fun times
All of Blizzard's manuals were awesome back in the day... especially the ones for WarCraft 1, 2 and 3, Diablo 1 and 2, StarCraft. They were packed full of cool lore with lots of background details that you never really need in theg ame, but made the whole experience 10 times more enjoyable.
Druids got their normal rez in Wrath. I know this for a fact because as a druid healer in TBC I would get people in dungeons demanding me to use my battle rez CD so they didn't have to run back.
4:29 An overwhelming majority of critters in Vanilla never fought back. They would just run around and disaggro after a while. From my memory, I can recall Deeprun Rats as critters that would fight back, for example. But most of them behaved just like the manual says.
The good old days when they thought of increasing the cap to 70 with Emerald Dream content. Also spell skills sort of made it in the game, but they were capped at whatever max there could be in the character info and I'm still not sure they did anything but it's hard to say.
Dude, i keep comming back for your videos even tho i dont play the game anymore, however im planning to start again in BFA. By any chance you can make a catch up of legion ? I have zero clue what happend in this expansion, would be cool with a kinda wrap up series.
I fucking LOVED that manual. It's a goddamn book, I remember bringing it into school when I was little to read on breaks. Finally, classic is giving me a reason to re-read it
Actually battle res soul stone etc. gives no debuff at all most likely another relic from beta. Also there is no restriction to how many battle res you can use in any given encounter unlike modern raids
For the experience thing, in the overlord light novel (for those who don't know it's a novel about a guy who gets transported into an MMO as it shuts down it's servers) they mention how Yggdrasil (the MMO) when something dies it loses 5 levels untill it hits level 1 and is ultimately deleted
Ah yes, because i read a book which happens to be written by someone who is japanese automatically makes me a weeb. Lemme look up the definition of weeb, "A weeb is a person that's not Japanese, but wishes they were. they're obsessed with Japanese culture. they integrate Japanese words into every day language. they are brony tier disgusting." So please dont use incorrect terms when they dont aply
Pretty weeby to mention Overlord when it has no relevance to this video. "Hey guys, heard about Overlord! It has XP and penalties like MMOs that came years before!" But how does it connect to vanilla WoW exactly any more than any other MMO? It's not about the fact that you read the book but that you're shoehorning it into the coversation when it's not relevant.
Ellert00 I was using an allusion. Do you know what that is? I heard something in this video that reminded me of that as I read the book recently. If you watched the video you would hear about how hiru talked about exp penalties in mmos, so I used that as an example of an experience penalty. Also it's not "weeby" learn the definition of words before you use them.
Portals makes my mage feel special very easy to navigate the entire world to do old contents etc. Warlocks have summoning stone also a got damn good spell. I believe unique class specific spells is important to the game
I think druids got Revive either at wrath launch or at some point during wrath. I started playing the summer before wrath was released and I distinctly remember that my druid only had rebirth to res people.
I'm pretty sure the manual did mention Artifact items. I think it was in the item quality bit as mentioned here: vanilla-wow.wikia.com/wiki/Item_Quality. It seems quite cool to me that 6 expansions after vanilla we get Artifact items.. even if everyone gets one.
Agi still gives dodge but only for agi using classes, Str gives parry, again, for str using classes. Back in mop, I had an 80twink UH dk with over 100% parry with 0 parry rating actually on my gear. Back then parry rating and such were still a thing.
The stamina thing wasn't misleading. Plate wearers intrinsically had a lot more armor than other armor classes. So even though the stamina amount was the same for all classes, the stamina was more valuable for higher absorption classes due to each individual instance of health scaling better with higher armor. I.e. when you take less damage already, getting more health means more than getting more health as a squishy.
Well i am not a vanilla player But these things i do miss really 1- Class Trainer even when i had to respecc in cata for 25/50/100 gold. Your char isnt a device you change its settings by a button. 2- Spirit for healers and mana amount. 3- old glyphs (wrath to pandaria) 4- class mount quest (the short one from cata) 5- Blue gear when it was more Woooow than the lagenderies now. 7- old profission system. It gave you something you badly needed it 8- pve and pvp class sets and vendors 9- no pathfinders 10- exotic Hunter pets
I strongly disagree with the conclusion at 3:00. Running to your corpse only costs you time, while being resurrected by a spirit healer may cost you a huge portion of the durability of your armor and applies a nasty debuff with which you basically were unable to fight. At the point of death (not resurrection) you lost 10% of your armor durability. This is the point when you would have lost experience.
Yeah, in Vanilla you lost 10% durability on death; if you res'ed at the Spirit Healer you lost an additional 25% durability and Res Sickness which reduced all your stats and damage by 75% for 10 minutes (unless you were below lvl 10 that is)
Man,i need to lvl up a mage, the whole portal mechanic seems fun adn i need to see and experience wow from more perspectives then my main...i wanna see how things look from other class views or other faction view Every class has its benefits
Miss Kobe Yoshi, no legion is not horrible and vanilla is not perfect, especially the manual, stop being such a fanboy. And yes, I still find the manual interesting and vanilla good.
Its funny history repeats itself, Gnomeregan was once a great city up till the trogg(bandwagoners) invasion(cata/mop) they were dealing with the troggs for a while(Wod) until Thermaplugg(Ion) decided to gas the halls to kill the troggs(bandwagoners) in the process killed his own people, leper gnomes( Legion fanboys) were mutated from the radiation and attacked anyone still defending their beloved city(disappointment). Gnomeregan was in ruins(Legion) as the survivors still find ways to take back their beloved city. In case you aren't aware classic servers is our comeback!
You didn't wand if you didn't want to use mana except as a healing priest if your group didn't need healing. You wanded to regain mana during a boss fight. You also would wand when a tank was trying to regain aggro on a boss (such as Onyxia) so that you didn't accidentally crit and mage tank a boss. Finally, there were bosses and trash mobs that would be immune to certain spells. There was no talent changing tables back in the day, and nobody could afford to respec for a fight due to the difficulty of farming gold and the increasing costs of respeccing. So you'd use a wand that had a different spell type on it such as a nature wand in order to damage mobs that were immune to say, fire or ice.
Am I remembering this wrong or did XP lose on death EXIST in vanilla? I clearly remember learning abt this, and ALSO learning that it was very small and that's why I didn't notice. My exact thoughts were "wait, why didn't i notice this before? OOOH i see, yea i thought i was going crazy, I guess I did lose a bit of XP there"
I was always kinda sad that trolls never benefited a lot from their regeneration ability. I would think "ha, I'm going to stack spirit on my troll hunter and be invincible in combat!" Only to find out that it actually regenerated so little that it might as well not exist. le sad.
Tanks didn't take agil gear into late wrath. There was no plate that gave agi in wrath. Even in TBC tanks would much rather have shield block value and raw dodge. However, plate dps in TBC fucking loved agi. Best in slot for warriors included boots and pants that were leather because agi was just as worthwhile as str if the secondary stats were strong. Wrath was where most of the stat changes happened because it was stupid that all melee dps plus hunters used to roll on leather ARP gear. Agi did give a lot of dodge early on though. To the point where it had to be nerfed as we saw in cata because bears could achieve near 100% dodge at two points prior to the release of cata.
I used to read the vanilla Game manual on the toilet when I was younger, every. single. day. It said in the rules that you arent allowed to name a character after something in-game, I remember seeing an Undead Warrior called Azeroth and my young petty ass self reported him.
Oh yeah, game manuals used to be my toilet lectures as well. So sad that we dont get any real manuals anymore like WoW, stronghold crusader ect.
Jakiladd You were a good kid. :^)
Bro. Me too. I loved reading it while watching my Dad play.
Dude I used to be such a nerd I would draw out talent trees from memory in class lol
Jakiladd bruh I stg I have a warrior undead named Azeroth then I got messaged by a GM
fun fact we haven't had a new caster/ranged since vanilla
The were lots of talks about Blood Mage or Necromancer before Legion, but eventually Blizzard decided that Illidan sells much better.
Mistweaver Monk is technically (partially) a caster :P
Vincent Nadin but yet not a ranged dps
I remember ppl saying "we lack melee, need more melee for raids" ironically ofc, raid leaders got tired of ppl running in and dying i guess..
Unholy death knights, early WOTLK, were pretty good with mid to far range spells. Death Coil, DOTS, Pet, Gargoyle, rooting spells. Was nuts.
Everything was a Hunter item.
8:10 I actually remember that. Putting on a dress and going to afk against demons near the dark portal. _Not my finest moment._
I remember putting my mother translate this manual for me when I was 14 years old. Had bought the game before buying a Pc! lol
Same! I read the manual for like one moth without any PC
Alliance raids, "wanding for mana" was common. A paladin would judge? wisdom on the boss and every wand hit would generate mana for the casters.
Agallion yes paladins judged seal of wisdom. Was very useful on longer bosses such as nef and cthun for example
I used to read the vanilla manual so often. The descriptions of each race and the history of each city was so interesting.

Great piece, Hiru! It's an interesting look back and your insights and commentary are spot on. Looking forward to part two.
3:48 non-combat rez was added in WotLK for druids. Even in TBC, druids had limited options in 5-mans.
glad i was a tank druid tanks where find in tbc less so in og wow
I used to take my manual to school every day. I was so hype to try the game out (I started during TBC) that I read the manual every day so I was prepared. The rogue was my most anticipated class.
I just want to know what all of the music used in this video is. Every single one of these songs is just as great as the video itself.
As a warrior I owned a set of paladin gear, just for the intellect, as well as looked for weapons with intellect on them to level alllll those weapon skills. I like to believe it made a difference.
I remember Atack power modifiers being as follows in the TBC (didn't play the vanilla myself):
Warrior, Paladin, Shaman (until WotLK), Druid, Priest, Mage, Warlock: *2 AP per STR*
Rogue: *1 AP per STR, 1 AP per AGI*
Hunter: *same as Rogue, but also 2ranged AP per AGI*
Feral druid (cat): *Same as regular druid + 1 AP per AGI*
Shamans had the worst itemization back then, as basically any TBC mail physical dmg rare/epic gear (except tier sets) was based around hunters, so all AGI, no STR, which resulted in no AP besides the one allready present on gear as separate secondary stat. But they were also kinda OP, so they didn't suffer from the horrible itemization that much :)

Update in 2020: shadowlands has you capped back at 60.
Your video inspired me to dig out my collector's edition manual. I'll go over it later to see if there's any differences between the two besides the fancy cover and back.
I have the vanilla game manual at my house!
I wish Artifact equipment still had its original red color...
I think going over the removed, added and changed racial abilties could be interesting. Everything from the weapon skills to Human Perception to Dwarf treasure finder.

The two main things I remember from the manual that were wrong when I first started in mid-Vanilla were Plainsrunning and Dwarf Mages.
EdgedShadow Plainsrunning would have really sucked. I wouldn't have been able to run around on my epic kodo while all the peasants walked.
This video was 5:54
yes at the moment of this video the level cap that was double, now its back down to 60.
Beast Hunters liked intelligence and also mana and heal armor because their strengh came from their pet leading to some of them having a pet heal equipment.

Oh god, I remember having that WoW manual. Kept it next to my PC when I played WoW.

I have the pandaria manual from the battle chest. Even going back that far is trippy
"In-game userface"
what an interesting retrospective, keep up the good work man :D
I have fond memories (before i really got into the game) of frequently reading the vanilla manual while sitting on the toilet. Good times.
You did an excellent job. This is fascinating.
As a vanilla prot warrior, a ranged weapon was essential for pulling in dungeons (when the group didn't have a competent hunter, at least).
I remember seeing a warrior out-roll a pally on a cloth drop in UBRS because he needed to skill up maces or something. The pally was pissed and they argued for like 20 minutes before the pally finally ragequit. There were two priests in the group too. They didn't cry about it...

Druid normal rez was added in the Wrath prepatch I believe. Either way it was absent for almost all of BC if not all of it.
but Gul'dan, what is the difference?
EVERYTHING!
I am pretty sure that the day/night symbol on the minimap is still there... it just more or less tells you if it's nighttime or daytime, that's it.
I remember Rogue gear with strength on it, I also remember that lot of daggers had strength on it too.

ur voice is so calming to lisen 2 ^^
5:22 im pretty sure it was literally "half bad"
In vanilla, I used to come across gear with strength and spirit on it, and gear with agility and intellect on it.
4:30 try to fear a rabbit, after fear wears off, it trys to attack you

Yeah I know, but they got revive in wrath
Bamaloo 3.0.2, yes
Agility in Classic gave u Dodge, armor, critt and !!RANGE!! Attackpower
Every Melee AP u got from Str
Even if you include the 4 Allied Races available today, there is still only a total of 17 playable races. Pandaren can be played by both factions.
I think I counted it as "Both factions have 9 races to choose from" and then just doubled that number. So yah your right, there are only 17 not 18.
Ah Vanilla. I miss you. You were so fun. :(
Well i am not a vanilla player
But these things i do miss really
1- Class Trainer even when i had to respecc in cata for 25/50/100 gold. Your char isnt a device you change its settings by a button.
2- Spirit for healers and mana amount.
3- old glyphs (wrath to pandaria)
4- class mount quest (the short one from cata)
5- Blue gear when it was more Woooow than the lagenderies now.
7- old profission system. It gave you something you badly needed it
8- pve and pvp class sets and vendors
9- no pathfinders
10- exotic Hunter pets
Watching this video got me super hyped for the vanilla servers
Druids didn't get a normal resurrection spell until WotLK.
"Sheeps" - hirumaredx 2018
I remember the manual talking about dishonor, where if you killed enough civilians your own faction would disown you.
That sounded cool.
I cover that in part 2
If classic stays classy, feral druid is what I'm rolling roasting all
I still read the original manual every now and then when I go poop and my phone is dead.
SilentProgram he's talking about vanilla, not retail
Yeah, in Vanilla you lost 10% durability on death; if you res'ed at the Spirit Healer you lost an additional 25% durability and Res Sickness which reduced all your stats and damage by 75% for 10 minutes (unless you were below lvl 10 that is)
time has changed so much
if I remember correctly the paladin could disspell res sickness right after release
I’ve been attacked by a rat in the tram room
The video I never knew I wanted until I saw it
What about the 5 second rule? :(
(Spirit regen in combat by not casting for 5 seconds)
This reminds me of when I read the box for Half-Life after having played Black Mesa.
Man,i need to lvl up a mage, the whole portal mechanic seems fun adn i need to see and experience wow from more perspectives then my main...i wanna see how things look from other class views or other faction view
Every class has its benefits

Druids only were able to ress without a cooldown in Wrath
The manual was shit it was probably written by a pr guy in 2002 who played the game for a few hours
The manual was more entertaining than all of what Legion had to offer.
Kobe, it's a fucking game.
You and Kobe should switch usernames
I use to read the manual, feel special.
OOOH i see, yea i thought i was going crazy, I guess I did lose a bit of XP there"
You forgot that Spirit also gave Hit Chance in I Think cataclysm(?)
It never did baseline. It was always some kind of passive or talent each spec had that did that.
Hiru I love you
I was always kinda sad that trolls never benefited a lot from their regeneration ability.
I would think "ha, I'm going to stack spirit on my troll hunter and be invincible in combat!"
Only to find out that it actually regenerated so little that it might as well not exist.
