I think i was lvl 43 or 44 at the time, and it was one of those moments that really hooked me for the long run
When I hit level 40 on my first character I didn't know how much mounts cost, so I didn't have anywhere near enough gold saved up. I started farming random mobs for gold, and before I hit level 41 I found a Staff of Jordan which I sold on the AH for 400g. All of my friends who had to farm for days/weeks to save enough gold for mounts were pissed.
Carrot on a stick led to some amazing, long chases. Nothing was as rewarding as catching someone after a 5 min chase and polying them off their mount, leading to their death.
That's what I was thinking - what about the flying carpet added in BC for tailors. Then two different carpets in Wrath of the Lich King, though those were just variations in color - a sort of pink/purple that you trained for initially and then the frosty blue color that you had to buy the pattern for and took special mats to craft. Wrath also introduced the first mount you crafted for two people, but only on ground in the motorcycles. And the Stonedrake is harder to make than he indicates. You have to look for a special scroll in archaeology (still required) that only had a small chance of being in the urn artifact you found and it takes a while for the urn to be one of your artifacts. And its a BOP recipe, so there's no chance of you finding it on one of your toons that isn't trained in alchemy and mailing it to the one you have that is an alchemist and also no selling it on auction.
The flying carpets were the only mounts you could double ride with the 2008 Blizzcon bear mount. So you'd be riding the blizzcon bear (ground mount) which was flying on a carpet. This was active in WotLK for like 1 patch before they ruined/fixed it.

Even today, in legion Pandaria is the slowest zone to level through? What are you talking about? Leveling 85-90 takes just over one zone if you don't do dungeons. Do the jade forest, then a few quests in the valley of four winds and you're moving on to dreanor.
I remember how utterly slow the 60% flying mounts were. You tended to take flightpaths where possible but still, it was great to finally be able to fly
The old Classic ways were the best, you really had to earn your mounts and it was iconic! I stopped playing after Cataclysm came out, to me WotLK was the last WoW experience and I loved Classic WoW and Burning Crusade the most! Removing the talent trees was a big mistake by Blizzard, just to make character specialization more simple for dumb people! It's a shame really how dumbed down WoW became over the years and expansions... I'm really exited about WoW Classic, I hope it will restore the game at least 95% to it's former state!
yah I guess I made a mistake by calling the one of the turtles by name? What I meant was just turtle mounts in general, not specifically the sea turtle.
Since you started in wrath you will never understand why people were against flying mounts either pvp servers existed for pvp before battlegrounds even existed so they turned the pvp servers into pve you could not just go afk on a flying mount back then if you wanted to be safe while afk you either had to go back to zone that your faction controlled or log out if not you would log back in dead the game is called world of WARcraft after all the two sides are suppose to be fighting each other not just in battlegrounds.

I always enjoy your content and appreciate it. The only critique of this video is the talk of not being able to fly in old content because you didn't play or are a new player. That's exactly the point if all the people that actually played when it was new had to do it the quitters and new people should have to do it. It's literally a right of passage.
16:00 come on, it wasn't "just gankers". People had been annoyed with flying since it was introduced in TBC, you think gankers were bad before? now they can fly and come out of no where. At least with no flying you both have a chance to run away/catch people.
9:54 This was for all passenger mounts since the Engineers bike mount was also added this expansion. I remember getting put to sleep by a hunter in Stormwind but still was able to move around because the bike wasn't effected.
Sparkle Pony was my fathers gift to the entire (4) family playing WoW at the time. He got one for each of our accounts and it's still one of my favourites.
I've played back in 2006 and i have no memories that such a thing existed back then, and i was playing undead. If it was ever added in vanilla, it must have been removed very early into the game.

So. Much. Nostalgia. I started in the BC, makes me remember creating my first undead made and my max level friend helping my level up in tirisfal and him just one shorting everything and I'm just amazed then getting to Outland and see him start flying around and he helped me get my flying mount.
As far as i know, no. If you was unable to get it the first time it came out. You're out of luck. Only the Champion's Treadblade can be brought with gold. Blizz might change this later but who knows if and when that might be.
lol. Well thats their loss. They had a certain amount of time to get a free mount. :) (course I managed to get it myself but dont have the ally one... yet)
I rememver when i first bought flying mount in tbc. I called my brother (i was 13 he was like 8) come come ill buy a flying mount. We were in shock literally for the next 3 days after like 1 month it became normal. We were so amazed by flying mounts
I kind of hate / love the new "No-fly" policy, I (as many others do) have a crapton of flying mounts, so whats the point of having them if I can't fly them in the new zones?
Dr. Florence Thats a bad comparison. You can use ground mounts, but not being able to use flying mounts is a different problem. Let me dumb it down for you. If you had a zone A and you could only use items X but not items Y, people with items Y will get upset because they could use them before. Plus you could say blizzard encourages you to buy / support them with buying a flying mount from their in-game shop. So when you buy an item you expect it to be fully functional, use all of its features, not half of them.
Top That‘s incorrect, it‘s a valid comparison, since enabling flying mounts basically means no one is going to use their ground mounts. You know that‘s true, don‘t come at me with „b-b-but the COULD still use them“. They‘d no longer be the fastest traveling option, and that‘s what matters. Secondly, if a flying mount is not allowed in certain areas, it is not „less functional“ all of a sudden. You can‘t mount inside, does that make all of your mounts less functional? Of course not. Flying mounts make things a lot faster, but they ruin the exploration experience and world interaction. Flying should not be allowed in zones that were not designed with flying in mind, at least not while they‘re currently relevant.
@murcroadster It's called a time sink by allowing flying at the start of expansions people level and do quests faster meaning they run out of stuff to do and quit which is the real reason blizzard made you wait until around level cap to get it.
I could've sworn that the Netherwing Drake's were 310% speed in Burning Crusade? That was my main priority back then. I missed out on all raids and most high end dungeons from Vanilla to Wrath, but my proudest moment was doing the grind for the Netherwing Drake and getting it before Wrath hit. Seeing the Netherwing Drake mount on the back of the Burning Crusade game box was beyond exciting!
I remember using some Chinese gold site during BC, downloading the web page at the checkout, changing the decimal place for the PayPal transaction, re-opening it, and paying something like $5.50 for 5,000g instead of $55. Got that 280% mount doe.
i bought gold to finance my vanilla sulfuras and god i don't regret that at all. fuck spending all that time mining thoriuim in begging from transmute cooldowns.
Wrath really messed with WoW, you're right. I kinda see it as a different game nowadays. I play on Vanilla and TBC servers quiet frequently, but BfA and Legion are pretty good in their own right.
Great how? Most unbalanced classes ever been, cookie-cutter builds were a MUST, and there was nothing to do besides tedious tasks. The only thing that made it the greatest, was that people were utter shit, there were no addons, and everything was new (because the game was new) So many people have the most rose tinted glasses when it comes to vanilla, the game in itself was completely shit. It was the time that it existed in, that made it great.
@@UnderWatered1234 finding overpowered strategies is what makes games interesting. PVP after Wrath was so fucking slow and boring. No reason to play at all.
I still remember how i got my first epic mount on my first toon (dwarf hunter) in vanilla. Manager to win the BoE alcor’s sunrazor dagger which i sold as soon as i got to IF, just enough to get the epic mount. Memories like this can reignite my love for the game even tho I know it will never feel/be the same again.
You missed one big one that is coming in the next patch, They are making it so no flight requirement purchase needs to be made to fly for 1-90 zones to help with the new lvling system.
Oh, I remember getting the first epic warlock mount. I waited for a LONG timr because some of the quests required you to buy damned expensive things, and I didn't think it was worth it. However, if someone in your guild or friends had done it, they could help you, saving you a lot. I still remember the rush when I tamed it in the quest. And then later, grinding dailies for 4 months I think to get the epic flying mount for 5k. That was truly a whole new world.
Mount prices are actually the same price today as they were in TBC. It's just that inflation has made 5k gold a drop in the bucket. It took over a month of grinding to make 5k gold in TBC. In Legion, you can get more than that from 2 order hall missions that only take 100 order resources to do, and take about 8 hours. Click 2 buttons, wait 8 hours, get your 5k+ gold.
The main parts of Pathfinder that are bullshit are the rep requirements. Remove those and remove Suramar from Legion Loremaster (or get rid of all the rep-gating so you can finish the storyline without being knee-capped by Rep gates). And it'd be fine. Rep has no business being involved with flying. Between Loremaster and Explorer you saw literally EVERYTHING in the zone. That's all Blizzard said they wanted, so that's all that should be required. (and no sneaky bullshit like needing to be exalted with a faction to finish their storyline which can only be done by grinding World Quests for a few weeks because each rep level only gives you a couple quests to do and most of the world quests are locked until you complete other parts of the story). Draenors was complete bullshit though. They actually scrapped several daily quests that were supposed to make the rep requirements a tad bit more palatable and just said fuck it, let'em grind mobs for it and run ONE daily quest per day for a Month or two. CHA'CHING.
ZanathKariashi the legion flying was fine. World quests/ the 2 suramar dungeons and the nighthold. If you did all of those you’d be able to get exalted with the nightborne in like 3 weeks.
Ragnaros The Firelord it’s not about it being hard. It’s about it being an annoying and unnecessary addition. People who came back after Nighthold and Suramar have no incentive at all to go there other than flying mount, because Blizz has moved all the current content to Garbagus
9:10 And it removed my one and only legendary I ever had: The Black Qiraji Drone Crystal. Well, it's still a pretty rare mount. (And still has its original graphics, it seems.)
Costed IS a word, but is being used in the wrong context here. If you were asked to analyse what a business project would set you back monetarily, you would 'cost' it, and the past tense+past participle of 'cost' is 'costed'. Used correctly, the lvl 40 mount was 'costed' at 100g.
I am a very new player. I started playing a bit before the raid The Nighthold was released and I really enjoy it!
Great video my dude, mounts in WoW have been an obsession of mine for years.
The Riding Turtle from the TCG was the first mount to be usable at level 1, not the Sea Turtle. I used to have it on a couple of my twinks.
yah I guess I made a mistake by calling the one of the turtles by name? What I meant was just turtle mounts in general, not specifically the sea turtle.
Ah no worries, wasn't bashing on the video. Just wanted to mention that in case you didn't know. :P
Na you made a mistake no need to get defensive when they're only pointing them out to help you
Since you started in wrath you will never understand why people were against flying mounts either pvp servers existed for pvp before battlegrounds even existed so they turned the pvp servers into pve you could not just go afk on a flying mount back then if you wanted to be safe while afk you either had to go back to zone that your faction controlled or log out if not you would log back in dead the game is called world of WARcraft after all the two sides are suppose to be fighting each other not just in battlegrounds.
I remember seeing my mum flying a sparkle pony when I was younger. At one point my entire family played wow before everyone but me dropped off. I just liked it because it was sparkly
I remember being 10 years old and working on my Epic Paladin mount. And I did it! 10 year old me was very happy.
This was an awesome video! So interesting. I love mounts and am obsessed with them. I didn't know anything about the sparkle pony :O
You forgot the ‘mount that isn’t a mount’ mount from Warth.
The one you get in Storm Peaks if you don’t have a flying mount yet.
Timelost Proto Drake
Devin Campbell ive never done enough storm peaks, but thats wrong
@@devincampbell5007 Nope, people without flying could get a free 60% flying mount in stormpeaks that could only be used there.
Gladiator mounts in TBC were 310% speed, not 280%.
Warlocks did get their level 40 mount for free, you literally just turned in a quest and got it, the epic mount was the hard one
I love playing your mini fact videos in the background when I'm getting to work or doing menial tasks. It's interesting information and I appreciate the effort you put into collecting and broadcasting a summarized version for each topic. I hope you're having a good holiday season. Keep On Keepin On.
Can't believe Druid flight form in tbc was skipped. That was really a fun differentiator back then.
I remember getting "What a Long, Strange Trip it's Been" guilty of getting my 310 this way
Why? That was a shitty long grind back in the day. 310% was just rewards
@@TheBlaert because spending 5k on a 30% mount speed increase back then seemed stupid (at least i think it was 5k, might have been 10k. i dont remember specifically). Waiting a year to complete all the achievements was worth it at the time. now all 20 of my alts have 310% mount speed cuz money just falls into your pocket.
@@BDCMatt sorry misread your op. Thought you meant you FELT guilty about getting it that way. Yeah it was handy just horribly long
I always enjoy your content and appreciate it. The only critique of this video is the talk of not being able to fly in old content because you didn't play or are a new player. That's exactly the point if all the people that actually played when it was new had to do it the quitters and new people should have to do it. It's literally a right of passage.
Been playing since 1 week after launch. Have only ever seen one naked epic mount.
"Heh, the skies aren't so friendly with Almeda flying them! " - felt good to earn rep with the Sha'tari Skyguard:-)
16:00 come on, it wasn't "just gankers". People had been annoyed with flying since it was introduced in TBC, you think gankers were bad before? now they can fly and come out of no where. At least with no flying you both have a chance to run away/catch people.
Thank you once again for your content. It is really well made and well documented!
I wish once day you ll have all the subs you deserve :)
>costed
fucking triggered
>using greentext on youtube
I remember _What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been_ and how I did spend a whole year working on it to get my first 310% Mount
do patherfinder or pay 5M gold? for the ppl who just wanna buy it?
9:54 This was for all passenger mounts since the Engineers bike mount was also added this expansion. I remember getting put to sleep by a hunter in Stormwind but still was able to move around because the bike wasn't effected.
I love you Hiru
EDIT: 20 minutes long and you name it mini facts? I always want more Hiru but that's strange.
that's what I thought :D
You mean its only 20 minutes because I only covered basic stuff. It would have been a lot longer if it was a full history lol
hirumaredx Cover it allllllllllll. One video for each expansion!
Sparkle Pony was my fathers gift to the entire (4) family playing WoW at the time. He got one for each of our accounts and it's still one of my favourites.
You completely missed the Druid 'free' flying (+60%) in TBC.
I remembered making a dk, havin it run too the mailbox, only to fill my bags up with the store mounts and making my starter a bit harder xD
You missed the fact that Tauren used to not be able to ride a mount, and instead, they had plainsrunning where they’d run at mount speed
I think this was more of a beta feature, because in the live vanilla server they already had kodos.
and worgens
@@Carpatouille That ability was still added though, not sure it was quite mount speed, hard to remember it was very forgettable
I've played back in 2006 and i have no memories that such a thing existed back then, and i was playing undead. If it was ever added in vanilla, it must have been removed very early into the game.
@@Carpatouille I remember using it in TBC for the starting zone then never using it again, completely forgot it was even a thing and I don't think many people noticed it was removed either haha
I'm getting to the point where I enjoy watching videos about the old WoW more than playing modern WoW.
How about we do
Annnyway?
Igor Lissowski no you can’t take over the world you’re part of the League of Nations
Proudest moment I've ever had while playing was getting my warhorse on my pally in vanilla.
Hello there, Obvious Question!
I farmed several weeks to obtain my 100% speed mount in classic/vanilla WoW. Memories! Hearbreaking and beloved memories!
Pretty sure Glad mounts in TBC were 310% not 280%
So. Much. Nostalgia. I started in the BC, makes me remember creating my first undead made and my max level friend helping my level up in tirisfal and him just one shorting everything and I'm just amazed then getting to Outland and see him start flying around and he helped me get my flying mount.
dang. no mentioned about the Champion's Treadblade/Warlord's Deathwheel and how they was part of a event.
Can new Horde members get Warlord's Deathwheel?
As far as i know, no. If you was unable to get it the first time it came out. You're out of luck. Only the Champion's Treadblade can be brought with gold. Blizz might change this later but who knows if and when that might be.
I hope they don't change it because I like having something others can't have
lol. Well thats their loss. They had a certain amount of time to get a free mount. :) (course I managed to get it myself but dont have the ally one... yet)
I guess what Blizzard might have meant by bring to the game was give players who log in time a promotion mount (can't earn those anymore can you?)
I left the game around a year into Lich King and seeing this video actually helps a lot to explain wtf happened regarding those....so thanks for that.
"Store mounts are accepted now days and most players dont batt an eye when a new one is released."
Its still ass.
Paandaas because we don’t hold them to the standards of olde
I rememver when i first bought flying mount in tbc. I called my brother (i was 13 he was like 8) come come ill buy a flying mount. We were in shock literally for the next 3 days after like 1 month it became normal. We were so amazed by flying mounts
I love your random mispronunciations.
They're rare drops, dont worry.
Watching your Q&A I came back to watch this. I just love how you've labelled it as "mini facts" and its 20 minutes long.
I kind of hate / love the new "No-fly" policy, I (as many others do) have a crapton of flying mounts, so whats the point of having them if I can't fly them in the new zones?
Top
What’s the point of Ground Mounts if you‘re not using them in flyable zones?
Top
That‘s incorrect, it‘s a valid comparison, since enabling flying mounts basically means no one is going to use their ground mounts.
I miss old WoW..
Jskdjd Shzbsd legacy, i'm still in wrath
Soon...sooooon (Classic WoW)
classic private servers have been out for years, you have missed out.
Jskdjd Shzbsd Then go play on private servers. They work just fine
knowing you had to carry around your mount in your bag when not using it before, and how full my bags are today, i'm happy they changed that part.
Sadly....I bought gold back then...ill never do it again and I don't think anyone should go that route.
I remember using some Chinese gold site during BC, downloading the web page at the checkout, changing the decimal place for the PayPal transaction, re-opening it, and paying something like $5.50 for 5,000g instead of $55. Got that 280% mount doe.
i bought gold to finance my vanilla sulfuras and god i don't regret that at all. fuck spending all that time mining thoriuim in begging from transmute cooldowns.
lmao, straight up..
you get hacked? lol
Devin Campbell no. I believe it's more rewarding to get it the right way.
I just found your channel and I love it some great wow content you putting out keep it up
Good video, however you got a bunch of facts wrong :/
If by lame, you mean the greatest. Old school PVP was amazing.
Wrath killed WoW for me. Haven't touched it since.
The only thing that made it the greatest, was that people were utter shit, there were no addons, and everything was new (because the game was new)
So many people have the most rose tinted glasses when it comes to vanilla, the game in itself was completely shit. It was the time that it existed in, that made it great.
@@UnderWatered1234 finding overpowered strategies is what makes games interesting.
PVP after Wrath was so fucking slow and boring. No reason to play at all.
@@imasspeons Ironically WOTLK is kept in high regard as the last GREAT expansion, looking back it was the most fun, lore wise and PVE/PVP too.
You missed one big one that is coming in the next patch, They are making it so no flight requirement purchase needs to be made to fly for 1-90 zones to help with the new lvling system.
ew gross
wish we could go back to no flying ever
jonas wojtas and that is the reason why we can't have nice things
Then perhaps we can only have gliding
I remember farming adamantite ore for 2 weeks 24/7 in nagrand to afford the 5k gold riding skill ... still gives me nightmares heh
at tbc you forgot 2 flying carpets from tailoring skill
yes it was added at early wotlk (3.0.2.8962) my bad
The people who didn't want flying in WOD were the same kind of people who would tell on you flipped off the teacher when they turned their back.
Flying mounts. The thing that destroyed world pvp
Aivansamahelvetti world pvp is wack as shit anyways
Oh, I remember getting the first epic warlock mount. I waited for a LONG timr because some of the quests required you to buy damned expensive things, and I didn't think it was worth it. However, if someone in your guild or friends had done it, they could help you, saving you a lot. I still remember the rush when I tamed it in the quest. And then later, grinding dailies for 4 months I think to get the epic flying mount for 5k. That was truly a whole new world.
"costed"
If you did all of those you’d be able to get exalted with the nightborne in like 3 weeks.
the legion was easy af but the draneor one was a bit harder for me
Ragnaros The Firelord it’s not about it being hard. It’s about it being an annoying and unnecessary addition. People who came back after Nighthold and Suramar have no incentive at all to go there other than flying mount, because Blizz has moved all the current content to Garbagus
+ZanathKariashi I easily disagree with you
9:10 And it removed my one and only legendary I ever had: The Black Qiraji Drone Crystal.
Well, it's still a pretty rare mount. (And still has its original graphics, it seems.)
“Costed” isn’t a word
That really annoyed me
Sorry
Costed IS a word, but is being used in the wrong context here.
If you were asked to analyse what a business project would set you back monetarily, you would 'cost' it, and the past tense+past participle of 'cost' is 'costed'.
Used correctly, the lvl 40 mount was 'costed' at 100g.
@@Aggrobiscuitsomeone trying to spread some knowledge is annoying these days.

I am a very new player. I started playing a bit before the raid The Nighthold was released and I really enjoy it! I really like how you cover the history of the game behind your videos because I would have never known this stuff. I just wish I started playing in WoD because it's the only region I cant fly in 😭
Im sorry but you can't make a a history vid when you started in wotlk. A lot of facts were wrong
He can do whatever he wants. It's his channel in the end.
Awesome video :) brought back some great memories
Literal wrath babby
I don't play anymore but I loved having mounts that you couldn't get anymore and then riding them around major cities.

As always thanks for the video.
