Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I signed up for the How to draw for painting...should be fun and good experience. And although I typically draw well, I don't do well drawing with paint.
If I were wishing, I would like to see a video on mixing various Browns and while I am wishing, a video on painting various beach sands (wet, dry, in shadow and reflective). Thanks for your videos they give clearer instructions than most others I have watched.
I loved the end where you show the student work and the contrast from dark to light could really be more pronounced and you explain how. Thank you!

Darks are so important to a painting and can be overlooked. I'll often revisit them when detailing.

Thanks for the video. I have recently got back into oils after 20+ years, so used to watercolors and saving the lights. I like the part where you point out to put in more darks and put the lights over top, and avoid going too light too fast, which I'm prone to do...

I find myself often needing to push the darks and the lights when I paint flowers. It can be really tough especially when you need an ultra saturated dark or light. Great tips!
I saw somewhere that if one desaturates most of the painting, the saturated parts of the scene can be painted in with a slightly saturated color that isn't on the highest end. It just has to be more saturated than the colors around it and it will pop out as extremely saturated.
However, for this to work the desaturated parts have to be close in (SOMETHING I don't know what) so they look more colorful and normal than they really are. This lies in the greys.
@@RatusMax yeah totally. That’s usually what I try to do but it’s tough! Especially when it’s from life because you’re looking at colors you might not be able to achieve with your palette.
@@DannySabraArt I won't lie to you I haven't mastered it either. I saw someone use the concept. (Ian Roberts: Mastering muted colors - UA-cam)I. He painted a couch and boxes being hit by sunlight. I wonder if Chris Fornatero has gone over it. I'll be honest I haven't fully tried it, I only keep it in the back of my mind. I slightly mute some colors from their true colors so that the parts I want to pop come out. However maybe that's not the concept and that's just adjusting the colors relative to themselves.
@@RatusMax Oh yeah I saw that video! Really great painting! I think it definitely works with drawing the eye for sure. I think what i struggle with say doing roses in direct sunlight is the values and the saturation are so extreme it's just really hard to match it. But you know what the answer is right? MORE practice! haha.. see you guys later! ;)

I am predominantly a watercolor painter and I have recently found your channel. I paint in almost every medium; and am looking to grow more into oils.
So far I really appreciate the concise nature of presentation/focus, and emphasis on fundamental mechanics. The specifics on the behavior of paint; and the approach to painting isn't the same as in watercolor (to be expected!); but there is a lot about this content I still found valuable and I wanted to say so. I'm going to keep clicking around - thanks for what I've seen so far!

I have a really hard time turning up the contrast for my paintings so they usually come out kind of faded and blurry, but this helped a lot.

I just stumbled upon your youtube videos and they are so well done and easy to follow! I've been doing oil paintings with a Bob Ross Instructor for quite some time now, which is fun, but it's not a style I want to develop some more. How to paint with acrylics
Curious do you wait in between layers for your paint to dry or do you paint your paintings in one go?

This might be a dumb question but what program do you use to isolate the colors on your reference pictures? Is that photoshop? I'm a new painter struggling a little with getting the right values/colors for sure.

Hi Chris! I am interested in your drawing program but have a quick question! Do I need to have oil paint (/be an oil painter) to benefit from the course? My medium of choice for my paintings is acrylic paint. It’s also just more accessible for me.
Yes, all of what I talk about in the course will apply to a acrylics. Things might be a bit different once I start painting the still life bc I am using oils

Looked at it on the link, but it had vids listed and some things with horizontal lines - couldn't work out what they were & the vids totaled about half an hour?
There’s about 45 min of lectures and then a full drawing/painting demo. Total it’s about 3-4 hours if you plowed through it all at once

My paints and brushes are impossible. Everything winds up blended together
Why not paint it from life when it's so easy to set up, instead of copying a photo? The darks are so dark when using a photo, if painting from life the shadows wouldn't be black voids.
I think your videos are excellent but sometimes I need to go back again as you talk so fast. I can understand why as you have limited time, however I really enjoyed this still life demo.
You can slow the speed down a little bit.
Tap the three dots and the options come up. 0.75x should be enough.

The whole idea of art is for us types to relax and you come across as hyper and this hyper thing is pervading society. Everyone is in a rush and somehow I find your videos just a means to sell lessons.
When you work from a photo, you lose a whole dimension. Photo = 2D. A real life object is 3D, and has way more information.
You go way too fast.
