Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

This exercise should help a lot of people. They can't think about painting the actual details in. So they'll have to find a way/solve how to make a large broad shape be a representation of multiple details in the location. A sort of place holder that still by itself can hold the painting up. Then hopefully they realize that it is AFTER spending the time to complete the painting with that large brush and getting as close as possible to the reference with it. That is the point that that we move from the broad shapes to the details.
The exercise should wake up a lot of people's skills. When I started I kept running to put the details in because that what was I was familiar with in my brain. I kept running past the overall structure and form of the painting. The frame to which the details was suppose to be on. So every time my likeness was off even though I could paint the eyes, nose and mouth. The frame/foundation on which they sat on was a face of somebody else. It was until I held back from putting in details and decided to make broad shapes that represented multiple details, is when my likeness of portrait paintings/ landscapes shot through the roof. It was because I took the time to modify that frame to the likeness of the person. It was just frame of shapes that looked close to the person.
Building the skill of arranging/finding shapes so that when we place them on the canvas they look like something our brain can register as something is one of the keys to painting. When we get to that point, we can then add the fine details that give those shapes their definition.
If people do this exercise multiple times and limit themselves to that one brush and focus on the shapes that can make it closer to their reference, their skills will jump! In painting details is not what makes or breaks your painting.
I hope this doesn't sound like gibberish lol.
I haven’t had a chance to try this one yet but I learned something new. I’ve watched probably 20 million painting videos. I have never heard anyone mention painting the distant grasses horizontal and the nearer ones vertical.
Thank you!
I would like to mention it’s probably important to have a variety of the primary colors , This way you can capture your warm and cool colors . for example , ultra marine blue and a cobalt blue . This gives you your warm and cool temperatures. I do that with my yellow and red as well. And with burnt amber and white it’s all you need. Great lesson !
Is this palette good?
Cool: Alizarin, Ultramarine Blue, Yellow Ochre
Warm: Cad Red, Cobalt Blue, Cad Yellow
With addition of Titanium White, Ivory Black, Transparent Oxide Red and Transparent Oxide Brown.
Do you mean like a split primary palette?
You can match almost any color with primaries and white. If not, it's close enough. Limiting yourself to those 4 colors force you to learn how to mix colors correctly. If you need blue to be warmer add in a little warm color into it. If you need red to be cooler add a little cool color. Get rid of all that extra color and focus on making them with the 4 and the colors will harmonize better and the values will look more correct when they are derived from each other rather than out a tube.
Why burnt umber? Thanks
Love your videos and your page Chris. Thank you for sharing. I’d gladly pay for these lessons. To me it was helpful to hear about the values / warmth of objects from near to afar.
My biggest problem has always been how can I fit all that scenery on a small canvas. Ten years ago I did a 8"×10" oil but have been to scared to do another, I feel I just got really lucky. Whoever comes to my home and view my bigger paintings, I always hear that the small one is my best one. But thanks to you I am going to start doing alot more, great video, love all of them.
I can’t get enough of your videos. You are a fantastic teacher. You explain things with your demonstrations so I really get it!
Can't imagine how many lengthy painting videos I've watched, but THIS one packs in more immediately useful information than all the others combined! It's very fast paced, so watch it 5 times and you'll pick up great new stuff each time. Thank you, Chris!
G'day from Australia, Chris. Am probably old enough to be your grandfather, but when it comes to painting, I'm strictly a babe in the woods. As a lifelong, retired teacher I really admire your teaching technique - I relate to it very much. Firm, frank, warm and intelligent - yes painting is thinking! Oh yes and I really like your understated humour - very Aussie, if I may say that. Your tips are great, and I am trying to use them to change my blandscapes into landscapes! Each lesson brings fresh light on subjects I've never really understood. Thanks Coach - what's more you lead from the front - I really respect your ability as an artist. My jaw drops sometimes at what you produce seemingly so effortlessly. I take copious, mainly mental notes. At present my work is in acrylics (I find them very forgiving and I need heaps of that) but I aspire to oils one day if I last that long and if I can muster the courage. Cheers Coach Chris, and thanks, mate, and keep up the great work. Andy
Watched so many of your videos and they really helped me even more than some of the in person classes I took. I think you are a great teacher and thank you for sharing!
I’ve cruised the entire internet for a decent instructor. While there are many, you top them all. Thank you.
Your confident and lively attitude to painting and presentation is very refreshing and inspiring. Thank you so much.
Such wise words! small canvas - large brush
I’ve been watching all kinds of painting videos from over a year now and still had no confidence with how to go about a painting until I came by this video. I learnt so many new concepts in just 11 minutes! It’s tied together all the concepts I had heard about in other videos but had never quite explained the “ why” behind doing things that way. Brilliant video, thank you so much!! 🙏
Talent makes you better !!!!
When I started out, I was horrible, but with more and more practice I started to make better pieces. Now I am not totally bad after about 2 years
Thanks for this video, it is very useful for me to get into the world of oil painting. I am a beginner and I like your channel, since I can put your suggestions and instructions into practice.
No BS and very or organized and clear. Thanks
Amazing video ! I love when you explain your thought process
Simple, clear, efficient. Thank you for that coach 🙏
Loved this practice, especially the reflection in the water! Thank you 👩🎨💕
I loved the simplicity of this painting.
Of all your countless inspiring and helpful videos, this is one of your best. Thank you!
You’re the best Chris! Really appreciate your videos. So generous for sharing, such an inspiration.
That was a great, quick and concise landscape lesson. Thanks.
Great video. In fact, one of your best ever. Thanks.
Thank you so much for these brilliant tips! Very excited to bring these techniques into my next landscape. 😃 Your painting was so simple, yet came to life very quickly!
I am definitely gonna do this. It's very helpful and finally found something to start with oil
Thank you for your tutorial ☺️
BRILLIANT! EXCELLENT advice, regardless the medium.
Great painting exercise, explained clearly. Thank you!
I like how your painting turned out in this exercise. I really loved the painting and the helpful video on values with the seascape. Thanks for the hint about the tree highlights. I think I didn’t realize that I may have had them too light forgetting that trees should have some of the darker values in the painting. Great tip!
Chris you are such a great communicator, thank for your output....I learn so much from your UA-cams.
that is why painting from the picture in the cold and windy weather is better. in the summer the mosquitoes and bees are annoying. i get to painting after this painting. never get tired of painting especially when you are my teacher!
Wowooo!!! Simplified and explained so well!!! Thank you I will definitely paint this. 👍🏻
This is a very informative video. Chocked full of info. Thanks
Good video loaded with solid fundamentals. It's been too long since I've done a small painting like this. Always a good exercise
I should really try this exercise. Great advice!
Great exercise! Just what I needed!

Great video! You're a great coach, always enjoy your videos and tips. Thank you for posting!
Great exercise! I've been painting tighter and tighter in recent years and seriously considering signing up for the Patreon jut to loosen up. There is nothing worse than perfection and small brushes!
This is so good. So good.
So much info and you get right to the point. I learned alot from your videos, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Awesome!
excellent teacher! i painted the pumpkins and posted many people liked it!
You are the best teacher I have found in my searches for short instructional videos, and there are many good ones out there! My next step will be to sign up for a painting class.
So much important information! Once again I feel like I need to watch this over and over and take notes! Thank you!
Awesome! I’m glad you liked it!
You are a very good teacher. Thanks for the videos. I am a competent artist of many years but I still learn from you. ✌
I watched this yesterday and today i saw the surroundings differently, i saw colors i didnt see or acknowledged before!!! I saw the blues and purples in the greens in the distance...i learned a lot from this thank you so much
Great Tutorial.
Th Ankh You
You make it look so easy
You're a gift, man. Thanks so much for what you're doing. 👏🏽 (I support you on Patreon.)
Great demo. Thank you😀
This exercise is very effective good job 👏👏👏👏
Great basic and useful info, thank you.
Thanks Coach
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS!!!!
The most fun I've ever had painting was following this advice, using a huge brush and way more paint that I usually do. It's one of my favorite paintings, too. This is such a good reminder as I've been getting a little bogged down with so many aspects to painting that I haven't grasped yet- I'll be revisiting this technique in my next practice :)
This is a great exercise, can't wait to try it!
Have fun!
Very nice!
love you mr. paint coach
I feel a nudge smarter after every Paint Coach vid 😚
This exercise helped me a lot. Btw the camera set up was great on this one, I could see how little paint I was using in comparison. Using more definitely helped!
Great lesson!

Wanna try this so bad!!
So much thanks for the information
Thanks for sharing, appreciated ♥️
Thanks for watching!
Awesome friend,great sharing beautiful😃❤️ ....
Hi Chris, This was very enlighting, and I plan on taking the challenge of relaxing my paint strokes - during winter break from work. I've been drawing off-and-on since I was 2 years-old and am now 70. In 2012, I did my first portrait oil painting. Because I am very detailed and it was an unfamiliar medium - it was more stressful than fun! I didn't attempt oils again until 2019 - painting 3 portraits since then until earlier this year. I did fairly well if I do say so myself but feel I could always do better, lol. Landscapes are awkward for me as well. Again, this lesson appears to be a great way to help me to not be so tight. Next Spring, I plan to sign up for your Patreon account. Have a Blessed Christmas & New Year.
Great info ty
Good information, thank you
Great videos man
Wow your Amazing..very glad to Find you💕
stay connected ❤️
Thank you.
I did this and it was very helpful! Thank you. Too bad I can't post pictures.
I tried this exercise today. Found a picture I liked, and just went to town using a #10 brush. It was super fun and I’m going to do another one tomorrow.
Thanks Paint Coach👊🏻
This guys probably the best source for paint technique. I wonder if he has any videos on palette knives….
Do a video on how to paint fabric folds with oil paint
Wow... I understood that for loose painting... Shape and value of color is more important than line and shades
Very information dense
Great video, Chris! I’m wondering how you find a long, flat brush for painting organic shapes, such as trees, clouds etc. Sometimes I feel like it makes the shape too geometric…
A small painting with a big brush is a great idea! using my brush with spinning, corners, edges! blue crimson, white. enough paint on a palette. rock and mountain color. saturated? does not understand saturated. warm green. local color-green+blue. red makes less vibrate. more option=confusing. vertical brush strokes, add purple for shadow. cool the tree, ground value=lighter. hill and mountain darker. horizon brushwork on grass fields. simplify the grass. shoreline darker blue. variety of shapes. pine tree first dark then lighter value. light of the tree not too dark. sky holes.
Hi Painting Coach just started watching your channel, great work I really like your content I'm a mixed media but mostly watercolor artist, the links above to your brush set are for acrylic is that correct?
Would you believe watching yor videos is helping me with my digital art paintings?
Hello Chris,
I had bougth your following titles courses with great pleasures :
The Basis in drawing in painting, The Basis of oil painting with landscapes few year ago.
Do the new title « LPR 101 » is the same course ? or could you advice me buying this with some discount ? Many thanks
Best Regards
What varnish do you use if you don't want to wait 6 months
it's interesting seeing what you do and don't emphasize/exaggerate. when i watched you paint, i was thinking to myself "wait a minute... that color looks nothing like the one in the photo!" but then when i look at your finished product, i see that i enjoy the more exaggerated planes, forms, and colors in your painting than the ones in the photo. "that's the point!" i know haha. maybe you could make a video (if you haven't already, idk) about emphasis and discerning which shapes, colors, etc. to emphasize and which ones to leave alone. i need to abandon my fidelity to photographs!! thanks for all the help.
Good. Next episode paint large canvas by using very little brush. :)
Do you always draw the picture or scenery prior to painting it? I would love to be able to just paint w/o putting drawing the picture on the canvas.
Using limited colors make the painting process less intimidating. Thank you very much.
What is that paper that you use to put your paint on?
Do you have any tips for begginar UA-cam artists
I wonder if that exercise could be done with portraits? I think yes, but the actual question is which would be more beneficial?
👌🏼🙌🏼
