What is nice is that they sing rather softly, so they won't disturb neighbors if you live in a flat. I would love a canary, but the louder singing makes others upset...darn...don't know why!!! The song from birds is very soothing...silly people out there anyway! Sigh...sing away chippers:) Cheers V
You have to learn to let them out of their cage more and then they'll be quieter, their meant to be locked away all day. They are energetic birds. It definitely works for mine
Zebra finches can't be lonely, they can pull their own feathers out and harm themselves in other ways. So they should always have company! And usually they are not very fond of people, so it's ok, I guess.

My zebra finch, Peep sings to it, my other male got killed by my dog the other day, though... My brother snuck into the cage and left it unlocked. My chihuahua took the chance to sneak into the cage and my male who had a bad wing and could not fly got snatched up, killing him instantly...

They can "learn" only while they are very young - till about 5 months old, then they just sing the way they can and don't asume new sounds.
