  • In 22 JULY, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Paul Greengrass (CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, UNITED 93) tells the true story of the aftermath of Norway’s deadliest terrorist attack. On 22 July 2011, 77 people were killed when a far-right extremist detonated a car bomb in Oslo before carrying out a mass shooting at a leadership camp for teens. 22 JULY uses the lens of one survivor’s physical and emotional journey to portray the country's path to healing and reconciliation.

    I can still remember being in the car on my way to my cabin in the mountains. I was stuck in traffic with my family. We listened to the radio and everyone was doing okay. Then, it came, the bomb. The car jumpd a few centimeters off the ground and the radio had sirens and the host was saying "What the hell was that?!"
    It gives me shivers thinking of this very moment of my life. I was lucky as our car was far enough away to not get blown up.

    Why is everyone all upset about it being in English. I'm from California and have never even heard of this attack but now I can learn about it and research it more. If Norway wanted to make a movie about 9/11 in their language so that Norway could better comprehend it, I really don't think I would be that upset about it

    • @ollierkul
      @ollierkul 5 років тому +87

      To me the accents were really off-putting. They are never consistent and it switches from them saying something in English with a thick accent to a name in Norwegian with perfect pronunciation. In my experience it subtracted from the quality of the film and how immersed I was in it. I don't think I could bare to watch a 9/11 film in Norwegian, I much prefer English. (documentaries are different though)

I agree that Erik Poppe’s movie is better, but that movie wasn’t seen by many people outside of scandinavia. Simply put, to make it more accessible for other countries. Here in Norway, we are used to subtitles, but other countries, America especially, seem to generally not be accustomed to movies with subtitles; they are more likely to be dismissed as "foreign films." But with the dialogue going on in English, some will probably have less of a problem with watching it. It's a Netflix movie, so I guess they want it to be accessible for all Netflix users in that respect.

    I am a bit worried about this. The tragedy that was 22 July is still haunting people to this day. When the Norwegian movie Utøya 22 Juli by Erik Poppe came out, people said it was too soon for a movie about the incident. However that movie was solely about the experience of the people on the island, and there was no sight of ABB. It recognized that no one but the people who were there would ever know what it was like, and that it was just a way for others to get a feeling of what it was like. The movie was a good reminder that we should never forget what happened and those who suffered and are still suffering. This however, has someone playing the part of the killer. It is extremely uncomfortable to see as he is one of the most disgusting human beings of all time and is still pushing his ideology. Highlighting him like this is wrong, and should not have been done in my opinion. The focus on the aftermath should be interesting though, and even though I wish the actors got to speak Norwegian I guess the English will open up to more audiences (they could have used subtitles though). Utøya 22 Juli tore me apart, it was quite frankly brutal, like it was supposed to. I'm sure this will be hard to watch as well, but I'm worried it will be for the wrong reasons. I guess we'll have to wait and see. (sorry for the long comment)

      The film producers have talked to the survivors and family's of the deceased and gotten permission to do so. Google and search a bit before blabbering out that this is insensitive. If it isn't for them, then it sure as hell shouldn't be for you. Take the Boston Maraton bombing as an example, there was a movie made for that much sooner than they have for 22 july. People need to learn to stop censoring and trying to forget the past, but rather inform the masses and have us learn from it and help understand why he did it.

    There already is an intense and sincere movie, called 'Utoya 22. juli'. It's Norwegian, with Norwegian amateur actors and feels completely authentic. I can understand the idea of telling the story of the aftermath, instead of the tragedy itself, but why in English with English/American actors and added suspense? Just doesn't feel right. Are people really that scared of authenticity and subtitles? This tragedy should speak for itself, not commercial reasons.

      2) I think he was aiming for the Best Pic category for Oscars..If they were speaking Norwegian it would have to go through the process of scrutiny and selection by the Norwegian film board to apply for the Oscars and that too it would have only gone in the Best Foreign film category, instead of Best Pic. Plus with the sensitive topic, I don't think they were confident they would have been selected by the film board.

      What I don't get is why they didn't just sub the whole thing? Or at least get actors who's English doesn't stick out as a sore thumb. It's as if they want to play into the stereotype that we're all this bad in English? I'm seriously unsure if I'll be able to actually ignore the silly accents and let myself go into what seems to be a well written story.
      IMO they should have done a Narcos; have all the Norwegian cast actually speak our language, and maye throw in some English speaking dude (authenticity be damned) to serve as the audience's (American's) window into all this.... not just straight out pander to people who doesn't want to read subtitles because it's "tiresome".
      EDIT: How did I not think of this: SKAM. Goddamn Skam took the world by storm, and that was all in Norwegian. You'd think that would have been an eye opener. I guess they were to far into production when that happened, huh...

    Censorship is not the answer. It happened. In fact I believe censorship plays into the hands of fascists and that is one of the underlying factors behind the attack.
    The important thing this movie conveyed at the end is that Breivik was left isolated and alone by his mother and even the Alt Right.
    This movie provokes a conversation nobody likes to have, but an absence of dialogue is a breeding ground for violence.
    Freedom of speech, democracy and rule of law. It will never be a perfect system but it's the best we have and the only way to thrive.

    I think it is grand that Paul Greengrass casted actual Norwegian actors and that those speak very good English in the movie. They did not have to but they did it. Norway is one of the most educated countries in the world and its population speaks very good English. Other countries do not.
    Try to speak Norwegian and then complain again that they speak English in the film. Norwegian is not an easy language and Norway itself has three official languages and three minority languages.

The actors had accents, but if you follow any story, any movie, you forget about that in the first 15 mins. Also, director and filmmakers invest a lot of money to make such big productions. If this was in Norwegian, I would not have seen it as a South African. Film may be based in Norway on a story about Norway but cinema is global, more people speak and understand English than Norwegian. Please understand every individual doing any business wants their product to go as far as possible. Stop being shallow people.

      @@Whats.Next.Videos most likely not. I can't see Disney having shows like the ozarks etc on their platform. As a matter fact Disney is thinking about pulling their shows from Netflix because they have lost substantial amounts of revenue in their sales of the movies like moana etc. So, hopefully they will renegotiate the contract and pay Disney more. Either way, Netflix will be the front streaming service runner for many years to come. I could be wrong but that's usually unlikely, it's how I make money other than good old fashioned hard work ;) . You opinion will be taken into deep consideration.

      @@Whats.Next.Videos nah, Disney syaraying their own streaming service will just be good for Netflix. Competition helps. Netflix just gotta make sure to continue creating good shows like "Ozark" and "Stranger Things"; losing the marvel series will hurt them but maybe not that much since only "Daredevil" and "Punisher" are actually great, the rest are just OK. They put this in English when all the actors are Norwegian and then chose to show off the narccisist who clearly did this partly for fame 😔 feels a bit wrong to me... Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy the actors get their spotlight, they are all great. i’m just not sure this is the right way to go about this topic. It just shows how this movie is totally made with the intention to entertain (!!!) a broader audience and that there is an opportunity for netflix to make money off this very hot topic. This is an event that most norwegians remember very well, and I just can’t help but feel like this is gonna be just another thriller from netflix - only this time they are feeding off one of the darkest days in modern Norwegian history.

    • @ettena93
      @ettena93 6 років тому +2

      It's important to never forget that even a small and safe place like Norway can have it's dark moments in history. And this is an english speaking movie made by an english speaking director made for an international audience, it would be hard for him to do his job with an immense language barrier between him and the actors. Money has been made off of 9/11 and other tragedies, and not to be offensive, but it's been a good couple of years since 22 juli and it's only natural someone expressed this happening in other ways than books, media headlines and documentaries. You don't have to be a cynical jerk to create a touching story about a horrible place in history - take Schindler's List as an example. And the biggest narcissists are the journalists who made money by printing Breiviks face all over the front of VG for months on end after the terror attack.

    • @NmBLs1
      @NmBLs1 6 років тому

      ettenA I agree about some parts of your arguments, I can see where you are coming from ☺️ I’m just questioning the whole project as a whole, I get that the director is a foreigner and that production would be easier. It’s just that... I’d personally prefer if the international audience had any interest in this event, they’d watch Poppes version of the story (I must admit I have not seen that movie and I’m not planning to, but I’ve read comparisons of the two) Poppe is not presenting the killer as a character and he is not trying to make it onto the mainstream media market, but it is more like a tragic and deeply moving memoir in Norwegian (not that I know for sure). But it is certainly only shining a light on the victims. If international audiences have an interest they can easily put on some subtitles and watch that. I don’t think the world is craving multiple movies about this event, and certainly not one that tells the exact storyline that many serialkillers and terrorists would LOVE to be told about themselves in a flashy netflix doku-thriller format. The man that did this, and the future followers of his kind are driven by this type of bullshit. And I agree, online media blew his face up on every front page for years and years, just like they’ve done with every terrorist ever. And just like many directors have made hundreds of movies glorifying and detailing the lives of real life killers. I do believe there are studies about the way serialkillers find motivation and learn from other famous killers in order to have a greater impact than their idols... and that frightens me.
      Anyways, I know this is just my opinion and I totally respect your opinion as well. I think it is good that these movies bring up the discussion! I personally will not watch this movie.
