    High pressure hose at top hole on rack pinion red cap if new , low pressure hose at bottom hole yellow cap if new . High pressure with the sensor hooks to the pump. The low pressure hose to reservoir. For those who want to cut to the chase.

    I will tell you one thing when it comes to using which fluid. I changed my power steering pump and high pressure line last year. The truck manual says to use AT4 trans fluid. Don’t use that, use power steering fluid. The reason is, trans fluid is a bit to abrasive, over time it will cause damage to your pump and rack. Use power steering fluid. 2 mechanics told me the same thing. My neighbor, who’s a tech at the dodge dealer was one of them.

    • @TheGasTap
      @TheGasTap  3 роки тому +2

      I was a tech at Dodge as well, years ago. I use what Dodge recommends. ATF+4. This truck has 252k miles. First rack and pinion, never had a power steering pump swapped. But you use what makes you comfortable, I'm just some guy with a UA-cam channel.

    I have a question. If the rack & pinion is bad would it make the steering turn worse than manual steering ?
    Great video, thanks, Steve

    • @TheGasTap
      @TheGasTap  2 місяці тому

      That sounds like a pump issue unless the rack has bad gears. But you would probably feel the gears grinding. Probably a pump issue.

    Wow, this fast swap. Awesome job.
    I know I could this too, cool trick with bungle cords.
    I just picked up an 02 dakota 4dr v6 4wd.
    Was told by place conrads I may need replace mine.
    Was quoted, by Conrads $1,600 brakes in front only, not with rack/pinion but just both front brakes capliers, pads, rotors, brake lines (front right line is bad only) they recommend both sides, kit comes with all.
    On top, they said it cost $2,100 just the exhaust from manifold flange back.
    I know parts are way less, I know I could do it myself cheaper.
    Have you replaced your exhaust system in your dakota yourself.
    My 3.9v6 has oem exhaust even cat too which conrads quoted within the 2,100 price new cat is $467 which is nuts, new costs half that.
    If you have videos of exhaust system also brakes, transfer case, rear differential drive shaft would greatly appreciated.
    My truck is for winter occasional daily too, do have car.
    Was given these quotes this week.

    • @TheGasTap
      @TheGasTap  2 роки тому

      That’s a high quote.

    If your tie rods aren’t bad when doing this install should you replace them anyways? My high pressure line leaks from the rack could push it in and out while the nut is basically seized? If I just replace the line would it fix the whining issue? I had replaced the pump and it still whines every once in a while. Yes I flushed the system. It’s still full of fluid when it whines. Is there a way to bleed the lines without unhooking the pump?

    • @TheGasTap
      @TheGasTap  3 роки тому

      If all the parts are old but don’t look bad I still replace them. Saves time and money later on. Whining is air in the system or a bad pump in my experience. Are you using ATF+4 in your power steering pump?

    • @the_allamerican7057
      @the_allamerican7057 3 роки тому

      @@TheGasTap I’m not sure I’m using prestone atf from Autozone. And the pump is brand new. I replaced that and the high pressure line I’ll probably end up replacing the rack anyways
