My opinion: Best opening sequence to a Super Bowl Halftime Performance ever!
For me the best Superbowl performance ever. Just such incredible detail in every visual which I feel like Madonna is the quintessential expert at visuals. She looked phenomenal with multiple costume changes and she truly looks like she’s enjoying every second.
The sheer logistics aspect of coordinating and putting together this 10 mins performance was simply mindblowing.

Before the show Guy Oseary Madonna's manager tweeted that the show was dedicated to Dame Elizabeth Taylor. Elizabeth Taylor died the previous year and both Madonna and Elizabeth were life long advocates for HIV education and research and LGBT rights. The intro is inspired by Cleopatra's entrance into Rome in the movie Cleopatra starring Dame Elizabeth Taylor. Madonna's superbowl halftime show is the only in history were more people watched it than the game. 110 million for the game 120 for her.

It's nice to see a straight man be open to appreciating her artistry. The thing about her for me is that her entire discography has not just uplifting lyrics and wonderful melodies, but also wisdom and empowerment. Her best song is Oh Father and if you check out what her coproducers say about her--vocal tracks in one or two takes, her insisting on live instruments and merging technological sounds with emotional strings and warm guitar--her musical sensibilities and knowledge comes from a very sharp instinct. The podcast Inside The Groove out of the UK talks about her music and the stories behind the songs in a very knowledgeable way.

I'm a Gen X gay man, and Madonna has been the soundtrack to my life. She has been a consistent and tenacious supporter of the LGBTQ community for 40 years, even when it wasn't so acceptable.
Recently, she added a another concert date in Tennessee to her world tour specifically to speak out against the growing bigoted and extreme anti-LGBTQ laws being passed by far right extremists there, and to support those in our community who are being targeted.
I'm so grateful for Madonna's continued support of our community, and for all of our friends and allies.
To be honest, until I'd reacted to a few videos, it hadn't occurred to me that a lot of her fans (and my viewers) would be gay men. I think this was the first video where I addressed it - it couldn't be ignored! It's been a learning experience. I heard about that Tennessee show - its so great that she's still engaged with the big issues

I think many people do not appreciate the brilliance of this show is that it incorporates everything we see in High School, College, and Professional Football 1/2 time shows: Cheerleaders (male and female), pom poms, and marching bands.

Overall, it's wildly impressive and among the best SB performances ever (at the time, it was the highest watched tv broadcast worldwide, but other SB performances have since bested it) but there are elements that didn't age well, in particular, the guest appearances... are any of them aside from Nikki even relevant now? And that only illustrates how iconic Madonna's career is... that even younger artists she gave a spotlight too have faded faster than she has after 40 years in the business.
I am not a fan of Gimmie All Your Luvin' so I'll politely disagree with you on that. I wish she would have chosen something else from her back catalogue that would have kept the party going... maybe Hung Up, Ray of Light, Express Yourself, which only gets a small sample from C Lo, or even something really old like Into the Groove. If the set could have taken another ballad, then I would have picked Frozen. Anyway, overall, it's really good, even if all the football references are a little on the nose for me.
As for it being 'super gay'... agreed. Madge knows her fan base and when she started off as a dancer and eventually a musician, a lot of her friends, supporters and colleagues were gay. Her connection to the queer community was organic and real, not manufactured like some other artists after her. For me, the word I would use for this is CAMP. And M, thank you for those oiled up centurions at the beginning. I bet she had fun hand selecting the models. lol.

The analogy of Madonna choosing this grand entrance by channeling the 1963 film depiction of Cleopatra’s first visit to imperial Rome was brilliant. The Roman citizenry then that witnessed Cleopatra’s entry to Rome were used to seeing such spectacles and were perhaps as skeptical as the male dominated, beer-guzzling football audience at this Super Bowl halftime show. Just like Cleopatra who not only impressed the Romans but also won the hearts of Julius Caesar and later of Mark Antony, Madonna with her supreme self-confidence to her abilities as a performance artist, won over this audience by most accounts and critical acclaim. Appreciate you covering Madonna’s artistry.
This, the Oscars "Sooner or Later", and the Met Gala "Like a Prayer/ Dark Ballet/ Hallelujah" are her best out of concert performances, with the BBMA Prince tribute coming a close fourth. Do look at the Met Gala video.

Gimme All Your Luvin... it's a bit contrived. But she did what needed to be done and no one quite does what Madonna can. In concert she's charismatic AF, and people are magnetised to her.
I just can't deny a pop song with that many hooks.
Although I am really attached to the dancers from Blonde Ambition and the Girlie Show, Madonna always has the absolute best dancers. Those guys are athletes! The dancing on the bleachers and the man playing Mercury/ Hermes on the wire is absolutely nuts! Madonna has danced and toured so hard man I know she had sustained injuries over the years and still people want her to stop! Those knee drops can’t be good for your body!❤❤

I literally edited out myself saying "that was shit!" after the LMFAO bit. Also: "Fuck marching bands". I'm trying to swear / curse a bit less. I respect that she is willing and able to collaborate, though!

Ceelo was the only collaborator to be able to hold their own with Madonna. Nicki, LMFAO and MIA were more of the time. However, Vogue and Like A Prayer are the best choices for an opener and closer.

I LOVE, LOVE HER! But to be honest, the vocals you’re hearing are a mix of the of the MDNA album + the MDNA live tour vocals. I still LOVE her though. You can’t physically do all those things she did without your voice taking a hit. Watch her in Blond Ambition Tour where they didn’t have the technology to mask that shit.

LMFAO,Nicki Minaj, Cee-Lo, MIA…. Not to throw shade, but I am so glad we’re out of that decade. I really wish Madonna did something else with that time in this set. I’m glad we’re out of that time period! Although there was an element of innocence still that I miss, it was a lull for me musically.

Again, Gaga! The best. Along with Beyoncé, Katy, JLo/Shakira, all the divas did great. Last year’s west coast hip hop show was fantastic too.

LMFAO... never was into them and still don't care for their songs. They were so popular at the time and Madonna knew how to incorporate them to get the mass audience pumped (Did you hear the audience roaring cheer?). Don McLean sang "the day the music died". The day music died for me was when the aught began with the awful EDM music--Madonna's MDNA was part of the wreck.

Another interesting fact, there's video footage (on UA-cam) of Whitney Houston watching and enjoying Madonna's Vogue performance. Almost one week later Whitney passed away. I guess I could safely say that the last super bowl performance Whitney saw was Madonna's.
The Party Rock guys were there for a current tie into something popular at the moment. Watching this live was amazing and the Party Rock worked then. We could cut them out now. Mr. Green was unexpected that is for certain. But, he gave a great performance. Madonna didn't sing all of this live. There is no way with all that choreography and set changes. The woman ran a marathon in 17 minutes, lol. Best half-time show for me ever.

I feel like the few Madonna reactions I've seen haven't really mentioned it, or have shyed away from it. I actually don't think I'd really realised she was such a gay icon - the more obvious choice that I've noticed from people in the UK is Kylie Minogue, who's also great obviously.

"So Gay".. Hmmm I would say that description fits better with Kylie's work (and others) than Madonna and it is certainly not the case here. The production values and commitment to storytelling are so sincere. Excess does not always equal camp, camp does not always equal 'gay' . This performance is a work of art

The entrance was the only good part of this performance. I used to love older school Madonna, she was the best entertainer in the world but soon as she started ‘’singing’’ I was over it. Lip-sync Lip-sync, Lip-sync. It was disappointing garbage. When I watch a Super Bowl halftime performance, I want to hear LIVE singing. And then CeeLo appeared which made bad things go even worse. Great intro that turned into one of the worst Super Bowl halftime performances I’ve ever seen. Hard Pass.
