I lived in RDR2 for months. I spent days fishing and hunting a particular wolf. I’ll never forget coming back to the camp and finding a party taking place, just wandering around catching snatches of conversations. Shame about the Caribbean island and that bloody epilogue.
There's a right way to do open world and a wrong way. The wrong way is having an open world that feels empty. These are all great examples of the right way to do it
Mafia 2 was beautiful but the city felt ultimately dead for the most part. I think the focus on the GTA series on this vid was on the third one; well that as well as Vice City and San Andreas, was essentially you driving through an empty hollow movie set. Not that the above mentioned games sucked; they ARE immersive but not to the degree of a living breathing city but sometimes it got close

Mad Max is such an underrated game. It’s a hidden gem that flew under a lot of people’s radar in 2015 for a couple of reasons, one being that a lot of people mistakenly assumed that it was going to be another bad movie tie in game. Another reason being that 2015 was a really solid year for gaming with a lot of big releases overshadowing Mad Max’s release like Metal Gear Solid V, The Witcher 3, Batman Arkham Knight, Fallout 4, Bloodborne, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Halo 5, Black Ops 3, Dying Light, etc. Needless to say that was a year of big releases in the gaming industry. But regardless, Mad Max is an extremely solid open world game with satisfying combat, extensive customization, and plenty of things to do. I can’t recommend it enough to people who are fans of the Mad Max films or post apocalyptic genre.
Ever since reaching Valentine in RDR2 no other game seemed so full of life. And it's not about amount of NPCs. Nice list though. I'll probaby try Syndicate, looks nice. 🙂
Yeah Witcher 3 and RDR2 still has the best example of a city or place being alive. Most of these, like Hitman are simply just have many NPC's walking around and doing stuff. That alone doesn't make the world feel immersive.
Im really glad watch dogs 2 was on this list. Its the reason I kept coming back to the game years after release. For some reason the vibrancy and liveliness of the city were addicting to be a part of.
Witcher 3 is one of the, if not the best rpg game I’ve played. Everything feels alive and lived in. If only we can erase our memories of the game, so we can freshly immerse into the game once more.
Obviously you’ve never played Cyberpunk 2077 , game was great on release and has only been made better by CDPR updates. If you have played , I’m assuming you played on old gen console or a PC that can’t run it properly.
I own a few of those titles but The Witcher was the only game that made me feel like I wasn't playing a Game I was experiencing another world. It was haunting!
According to the GTAIV preview at Eurogamer, art director Aaron Garbut specificly instructed the world artists to make sure every crack and dent had its history.
Syndicate is my favourite AC game, I always struggle to explain why. I think you did it perfectly. It’s literally so immersive in a way the other games don’t hit.
KCD is a fantastically immersive game, which makes you feel as though you are there in person. It gets additional bonus points for it's historical realism too.
It‘s interesting to hear that, in Mad Max, “every location feels purposely designed”. I’m getting tired of games which were designed purely by accident.
You’re being annoyingly pedantic for no reason. It’s common sense that some games are developed with more intention and planning put into their design. That shouldn’t even need to be explained, it’s just literally obvious to anyone that’s ever played a game.
I’m not much of a gamer but in my older age I played red dead redemption 2 and was in awe with the landscapes and all the activities I could do like fish, hunt, treasure hunt, and play a hand of poker. I’m here to find some other great open world games to explore. Thanks for the recommendations, I’m going to try the Mafia 2 and a detective game called LA Noire my nephew suggested. Cheers!
Dying Light 1 with its 3 maps - Slums, Old Town, and The Following - are some of the most lived in video game environments I've ever played. I can't believe it didn't make this list.
Kenshi is one of my favorite open-world games that feels so alive, with every faction, hostile or friendly, interacting with each other. Caravans keep the market rolling, and faction leaders getting killed or kidnapped can affect an entire settlement or faction's aftermath, such as being occupied by a rival faction or falling into ruins. Its open-world exploration is unforgiving and dangerous.
I think GTA IV, liberty city was very underrated. I spent hours there exploring and marveling at the graphics, the physics, the lighting, draw distance and of course, being in a city that for me, was the first that felt truly alive.
I have played several of these. It’s a great genre. I especially like hardcore survival games, so of the ones I’ve played here, Fallout 4 is my favorite. Particularly so, because it features console mod support, which lets me tweak, or overhaul it, to my heart’s desire. If I could include a game on this list, definitely going with Cyberpunk 2077. It has a great layout, that makes sense. There’s industrial zones, residential, downtown, energy sector, etc, all the kinds of zones a functioning city needs.
But on console in performance mode(or even high fidelity mode for that matter), the NPC density and amount of cars are severely inconsistent. Sometimes a street in the middle of the city becomes a barren ghost town. Ofc on PC there's an option for NPC density, but thats not the point. AC Unity(2014) had the most massive amount of NPC's(no cars or carriages tho).
Honorable mention to Days Gone. A fairly small world but an engaging game. Ghost of Tsushima is a beautiful world. Forza Horizon 3 and 4 both won me over with their world design.
RDR2 and Stalker always did it for me. Absolutely top of the line games, partly due to their exquisite atmospheres. GTA IV, Mafia, and Hogwarts also hit the mark for sure.
Especially when you have Hitman, Watchdogs 2 and Flight simulator of all things 😂 it's one thing to be open world with many NPC walking around. It's another to make it feel alive and breathing, none of these 3 games have that. They're just as alive as most Spiderman games and Hogwarts.
I did not want to spend time in that open world. I never just got in my car and drove around with no goal. Never wanted to like I did with other games on this list.
Mafia 3 : beautifully atmospheric maps with specificity in environments, interesting story, humour. Umity dense with detail and crowds on par with syndicate in terms of intricacy. Both patched and great by the time I got to them.
@@КириллШилейкис-б7шI totally disagree. Sure if you stare at them for long enough maybe but I think it’s cool how you’d see so many different animations. Just finished Hogwarts Legacy and am about to start Red Dead 2 for the first time (I didn't have a console for years so am catching up on recommendations now). Witcher 3 was incredible but to hear that so many think RDR2 has an even better open world than that seems like it's pretty good to me! (No spoilers please!!!!).
Im sorry, but Hogwarts Legacys World doesent feel lived in at all. Theres nothing dynamic, the npcs dont have a day cycle or anything. At night the dorms are empty and all students just despawned, etc
Kingdom come deliverance is probably the best open world game I’ve ever played. It really feels like the NPC’s live there. The second game is gonna be unreal
Despite the lack of an actual engaging open world I don’t think any game even comes close to the open world of mafia definitive that game is gorgeous even on my old ass tv from like 2005
Some great games RDR2 is THE game though on my 5th playthrough.. As a Side note you cant climb big ben as Big Ben is actually The Bell inside the tower..
For all the crap that Ubisoft is getting this year, they always manage to add history to their bigger series. (Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, and don't ask Bolivia but their Ghost Recon series too--Wildlands, re Bolivia.) 😂
The guy doing the voiceover has no clue what he's talking about. Saint DeniS* ValenTIN* If you played RDR 2 you know how they are pronounced. Also, where is Cyberpunk 2077?
This video came out 4 days after the game released so they might not have had time to properly play the game but I feel like Stalker 2 belongs on this list as well
I haven't played every game on this list but I have played some of the the biggest ones. For me personally, the best crafted worlds that feel a level above the rest are The Witcher 3 and RDR2. I'd throw in Skyrim with an honorable mention as it's a game that I truly got lost in, I have a special place in my heart for Skyrim but if I'm honest it's nowhere near as polished as the other 2 and especially cities and towns do not compare to something like Novigrad in TW3. Elden Ring and GTA are up there as well.
