I've had two shoulder surgeries.. (Fun fact: the singer of Sha Na Na was my surgeon) You MUST faithfully do your home exercise when they start you on physically therapy.. Best.

Yes, I agree, I didn't understand the need for rehab and in hindsight it really slowed down my recovery and longtime mobility.

Glad to hear that you're on the mend. I went through shoulder surgery almost 3 years back after a mountain biking accident... Shattered my left proximal humerus close to the shoulder socket. I was able to start playing after 6 weeks. Keep the faith brother!
My bass has been my friend since I was 15. Played it all along but not so much when I worked full time. Retired now and good to be back with my buddy almost everyday. 45 years. Rock on!

I am also currently recovering from a shoulder/pec tendon surgery! I'm in a sling too. Hang in there. I heard the same thing about the 6 to 12-month recovery.

I had some reconstruction done some time ago… and it is an itchy and impatient long way back - my condolences, and my best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Praying for a speedy recovery! Had a herniated disc in my neck a few years back and it took me away from my basses for months - wouldn't wish that for anyone!
Get well soon Scott! I REALLY know how you feel brother. I had an old spine injury get worse in 2010, which caused me to be disabled. The injury to my spine is right between my shoulder blades, and holding my bass is extremely painful. Out of all the things I "lost" due to my injury, my connection to playing my bass, especially with my band, has been one of the hardest. Get well soon! :)
Oh boy, good luck and health. About 10 years ago I damaged my shoulder in an mountain bike accident and wound up with a frozen shoulder. I did play bass after 1 about 2 months. Full arm range took more than 1 year, cause frozen shoulder is terrible.
Scott, Get well Soon! It sucks that it happened, but you DO have Great Team with all of the instructors and people behind the scenes who keep SBL running. I totally agree with the importance of playing my bass every day! It is part of my life and hope it always is.

Get well soon Scott. I gave up bass when I was twenty something. But i decided to pick it up when I was 44, while stuck in bed healing my wounds after a motorbike accident. I made this decision after watching one of the bass related UA-cam videos, and guess what? It was one of your videos. I’ve been rocking the bass for 6 years now, starting the learning process almost from the scratch. And I couldn’t be more happy, not only because where I am now with my playing, but also because I know where I’m going. All thanks to you Sir. I owe you big time!!

I worked in Orthopedic Surgery and have had a rotator cuff and SLAP lesion repair of my left shoulder...Do your rehab! All the best!
I hope the recovery goes well for you Scott!! I tore my rotator cuff and I was lucky that I didn't get "frozen shoulder" (which I didn't even know was a thing before my injury). I'm glad that you're already feeling like you have decent range of motion! ❤❤

My wife had the full shoulder surgery earlier this year. Definitely go get a “Circulating Cold Water Therapy Ice Machine” for ice therapy. You can load it up with ice and water, have someone strap the pad around your shoulder with an Ace (stretchy) wrap, and just sit back and let it do the rest. She even used it in bed early on since she was braced and wedged upright anyway, and it really cut down on the pain meds required!
This is also an opportunity to do a few one-handed keyboard bass videos. I’d watch them!

I dislocated and tore my shoulder to shreds in February of this year. I had surgery in early April to repair the damage, but tore everything again ten fold in August doing physical therapy. I have to have a shoulder reconstructive surgery on October 21 and fingers crossed that it works this time. Like you, I am a bass player and because of my shoulder injuries, I’ve not been able to play since February 25.

Broke my shoulder years ago and had to wear a sling similar to yours. It sucks, but hey, this will pass. Looks as if you will be fine. Speedy recovery!

I had to have a tendon removed and replaced on my left wrist a few years ago. I know the post surgery playing fear like you. all's well and I'm thrilled everything went well for you!!

Feel better soon! I have had both Rotator cuffs and biceps done. You will recover, but it does take about 12 months to be 100% 75% after 6 months. Do the PT and you will be better than before.
A friend had a similar surgery. He bought a Taylor GS Mini acoustic bass so he could keep gigging while in the sling. Take rehab seriously and you'll be back in the game in no time!
