Ricky freaks out at even the smell of the stray cat in my apt complex. They've been in one fight before, and now Ricky isn't allowed outside without my supervision.
This is the most physical reaction Ricky has had to the smell of the stray. He usually vocalizes his anger. Luckily, he didn't managed to hook me.

An interesting one, really shows how good their sense of smell is, he was able to recognize the scent of that cat in milliseconds. Then he immediately went into fight mode. Of course the smell didn't match up with what he was seeing, so he pops out of it fairly quick.

Usually male cat hates other male cats feromon. So, the stray probably a dude, and I'm 100% sure Ricky is straight
This is why when you are introducing strange cats you don’t just throw them together.
The smell is like 75% of the introduction & this is done by swapping their bedding over from the separated cats that are in different rooms.
Even swapping cat litter can help.
After some time doing that you then let the cats smell each other through a gate or slightly open door.
Then the visual introduction without physical contact then eventually they should be fine together.
Not all cats will hate one another on sight but if the first interaction goes badly then you have a long acclimatisation ahead.

When I brought in a stray kitten, both of my cats reacted like they were being replaced, and started to console each other. It took a while before my cats realized that the entrance of the kitten, didn't mean that they were going to be replaced, and my male cat warmed up to the little guy and they became best buds. I have seen jealousy in animals, and it's interesting how they have a thought process of fear, thinking that they could be replaced... like a cat thinking about the future, consequences....
I wouldn't go as far to say that they start thinking about the futures consequences of another car being let in, they take it more as an immediate and imminent threat. Wether they perceive the other cat as trespassing on space that they feel to belong to them, or see them as not a member of the group; an outsider.
Cats don't tend to think in such complex, long term-terms as humans. Were as we might contemplate how a decision we make now might affect future outcomes related to the original issue. Cats on the other hand simply don't.
Not that they are not smart, but they do not have the exact same capacity for decision making in an abstract matter.

alot of times the strays i take in are very grateful and do what they can to fit into the group.
cats are territorial and Ricky seems like an indoor cat with no siblings so it makes sense why he was threatened. His owner practically gave him a whiff of an outsider so he becomes territorially insecure.
