I have bought it Jason but need loads of market research and searching. Indeed one needs to savy with places to search for the same. Recently sold my Nikon apsc setup as well to opt for Canon Mirrorless M50
Hi Jason, I have bought all my GoPro gear second hand. No problems, in fact almost always came with little extras not advertised (mounts, bags etc). Usually Facebook Marketplace and I keep it local to me 😉
Unrelated but I've looked just about everywhere for this answer. What's the video file size difference between A7S3 and A7R4?? A lot of folks say prepare for the file size that comes with the A7R4 (which i have) but now seeing the new A7S3 out, ppl are saying video file are pretty big as well. If so, which camera takes more or less space when it comes to recording in RAW uncompressed? Please and thank you 🙏
I basically only buy camera gear used locally. Almost anyone who is truthful will let you test the equipment before forking over the cash. As long as your meeting in a public place, its a safe great way to save lots of money on gear.
GLAD TO SEE YOU BACK..My last three lens purchases were used. I purchased them from the local camera shop where I also purchase all my gear. I have never been disappointed! They do a thorough check before they bring gear in as I have traded items in well. When I want to buy another used lens I let them know what I am looking for, then if they ever get one they connect with me. I have had GREAT success! awesome topic..be well!

@@divil2273 thanks for answering, and yes, it is a Sony camera I'd like to buy. The situation I'm in is that I'm in a country where the postal service is 💩. I only go once a year back to Spain to visit my parents, and I'd like to get a camera there I can use to work. I'm not really on that tight of a budget, but anyway I don't want to pay the premium for a brand new one 😂. I've seen a few a7 III or riii for around the 1k mark on eBay and I wanted to ask if you had any advice 😅
Thanks for this video Jason! I am glad you are coming back on UA-cam, at your own pace :) One question, what about checking for mold and such inside the lenses? That is my main concern and reason why I very rarely buy second-hand lenses. Thanks!
I search used regularly, especially PC hardware. Recently snagged a craigslist a7ii with the kit lens for 675$ off a photographer. Was pretty suspicious as I'd responded to several obvious scams, but it was from a photographer who wasn't getting any use out of it. Super friendly guy and he was excited to pass down a deal to a beginner. Even threw in a case, flash, and extra batteries.
I was just looking to buy a used A7III but wasn't sure if it was safe to do so. The timing of this video couldn't be any better. Now I know what to do, Thanks !!
Over the past eleven years I’ve bought and sold ten camera bodies and over three dozen lenses via Craigslist and “renewed/refurbished” items. This has enabled me to buy, use and sell gear with little to no depreciation and occasionally at a profit. Every piece of gear purchased has worked perfectly and every buyer of my gear has been happy with their purchase.
@@gilbertjeffery2696 In the past two months sold a Sigma 28-70, a Tamron 28-75 G1 and a Sony 85 1.8. Upgraded to the Tamron 28-75 G2 and the Sigma 85 1.4. That's it for now but will be posting a Mosa Aricross gimbal.
The major issue I have is that sellers usually lie on the condition of the stuff you buy. I complain and eventually ask for refund at which point they just discount it instead almost every time, because they know they're wrong and the bank or paypal will rule in my favor and will have to pay shipping + insurance if I send back. It's very annoying lol. That's why you need to make sure they describe the condition every time. I got an a7rIII with a big fingerprint on the sensor and the shutter was slightly bent f.e. and the guy claimed he didn't see it (yeah right, I guess fedex did this uh). Anyway ended up cleaning the sensor and fixing the shutter and got a huge discount that one time - but it's really tricky, sometimes it doesnt work so well.
Recently bought a sigma 24-70 at a decent price, but was very suprised it was barely used. The seller sounded like a father going through hard times. Really felt sorry for him..He said he'll come back to photography when things settle.
All of my recent gear purchases have been on FB marketplace. Everything in flawless condition. Got an A6100 w/kit lens for $450 & Sigma 30mm f/1.4 for $200.
Been buying and selling used items forever, mostly video game stuff, but I've bought a few lenses the past two months, and the people I meet are dope to just chat with about photography, people love sharing their photog stories.
The only issue I had with EBAY is even with tracking, the buyer claimed he never received the camera. The buyer wanted a refund for not getting it, but since I had tracking, I was protected. I now ask for an adult signature for anything I ship. This prevents the I never received it comment even though tracking says they did.
Really good tips, I've bought plenty of used gear and always been lucky with no problems. I think most people look after expensive camera gear and us photographers are usually an honest bunch so hopefully problems buying used are rare.
I wished this video was already available last year. I have zero knowledge about cameras, lenses and stuff when i bought my first camera, the a6000, it was a used item. But after a month, I sold it to buy a used a6300. When our local camera store put the a6400 on sale plus Sony's cashback promotion, sold the a6300 for a higher price than when i bought it. Used the money and add 100 Australian dollar then got the brand new a6400 (haha). All my 3 lenses are used items but they are all like new when I got it. And my Boundary Supply Errant bag is also used. Thank you. This is very helpful as I'm still gonna buy used stuff. Hehehe
Great comprehensive video, Jason, it was awesome meeting you and buying used gear from you! You are genuine, super friendly and exactly like you are on youtube!
I used MPB for my gear very recently, I know I could have gotten more money privately, but just being able to have the item collected from your house, insured delivery to them, no "I didn't receive the item, I want a refund". Very convenient.
Thanks for a great video! I wish I had watched it before I bought my 1st used camera. I purchased a used Canon T5i with kit lens. I should have been more diligent when I noticed the lens being stored on the body.... everything tested out OK and I took the lens off for a quick cursory inspection. All seemed to be in order and a paid for it. Upon further inspection when I got home, I noticed part of the mount on the lens was damaged and missing. Lucky, when I contacted the seller, he refunded me a small portion which covered the cost of the broken mount. So it all worked out in the end. Lessons learned, be more diligent when inspecting, and if there is an issue, contact the seller to try and resolve. Thanks again and best of luck to those shopping 2nd hand.
Good advise. I like using Facebook marketplace now vs Craigslist due the fact you know have a way to investigate who this person is via Facebook page. Also a red flag is if you meet up and you want to take your time looking and viewing the images etc and they get antsy and want to leave, give them the camera back and say thank you but no thank you
I have a used camera buying hack. Certain cameras' LCD displays come integrated with a glued down glass screen protector and can be replaced fairly easily with a $20 part from a camera shop. If you have patience and are handy with DIY and electronics - Sometimes you can find used cameras where the body and sensor is fine but the "screen protector" is very scratched up or the UV coating is coming off. You can usually bargain these down by several hundred dollars and do the $20 fix yourself.
I’ve been buying used or buying big sales forever. I’ve bought about $10000 worth of camera gear and in the end when i sold it all to upgrade I probably made back $9500. So I’ve “rented” all the gear for the past 5 years for only “$500”! Love it.
Bought a Canon 6d mk2, 24-105mm f4 II, and 35mm f1.4 II as a kit from a local classified. The whole kit cost me $2000 CAD and was all practically new. I sold the 6D and 24-105 for $2000. So, I basically got the 35mm for free!! The used market is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
Bought a used telephoto lens from a large reputable photo/video store in New York, I was very surprised when it arrived without a lens hood. When I called about it, I was told the hood was "not required" for the lens to function. And I was told I'd have to call and ask before buying used in the future, if I wanted to know if the lens came with a hood or not. So, yeah, in the future I'll call if I have any questions about used gear from B&H
Really good video, thanks for sharing these responsible tips for evaluating used gear. Some of us old school shooters have to come up to speed on sales apps, beyond PayPal & Venmo I am lost, lol. I think doing another video where you actually step by step did a field evaluation of a camera and lens would be great. Some of the sites you use would be interesting to see how responsive they are in a coffee shop setting. I think bargains are out there if we have enough knowledge and patience to hunt them down.
I just bought a few wide angle lenses on ebay for far less than they were selling for on amazon I got a 16-35mm f4 for $710 on ebay when amazon lists it at around $1000 at the least, it's been working great for me so far and i love it!
I grabbed my R3, 24gm, 90macro, 24-105mm and 100-400gm all used. Didn't test before buying, sometimes purchased online from interstate. No issues at all. Recently got the 20mm f1.8 new for an insanely good deal.

Hey Jason! Great video and I agree 100% with your points. Here was my journey from $600 to an A7RIV: I bought a used A7II used for $600 Sold the A7II for $800 (profit = $200) Bought a used A7RII for $750 Sold the A7RII for $1300 (profit = $600) Bought a used Sony 24-70 2.8 GM for $1300 Sold the Sony 24-70 2.8 GM for $1600 (profit = $300) Bought a used Sony A7RIII for $1600 Sold the Sony A&RIII for $2200 (profit = $600) Bought a used Sony A9 for $2100 Sold the Sony A9 for $2500 (profit = $400) Bought a used A7RIV for $2500 Now I have a Sony A7RIV It took me 4 months to reach this. Now I have used the camera I bought to do events and bookings which helped me start a business. I borrowed a Sony 50mm 1.8 for my first couple of gigs. Landed me enough to buy a 35 1.8. I choose the A7RIV cause the plan was to have a good body then start with 1 lens. Once money starts to come in, I can then start saving for decent glass. With the A7RIV, you can crop and recompose the images which forgives the limitation of having 1 lens. If you ask me how I got things cheap, you got to work hard and look at FB market, craigslist, pawnshops, resellers every day single day. Always ask, and haggle with the price, the least you can get is a "no". :)

The real problem with some sellers is that they are as skilled as a used car salesman they know you know that they know or that you know nothing at all
I only buy used items. I only buy new when I can get it at the price of a used item. lol. I cycle through my stuff very quickly. Buying used items is pretty good because they can save you tons of money in the long run and when you sell them, you have much lesser depreciation.
I bought my A7 used, but I did not do a lot of investigations when buying. Just checked if everything works for a minute and got it. Luckily everything went smooth
I bought back in 2018 a used A7II off of eBay and it was a good buy. I was nervous at first due to it being my first time buying used gear but it was a good experience. I'm in the process of trading in that same Sony A7II, 50mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8, Metabones IV EF to E adapter, and a Canon 24 EF-S with Adorama in order to upgrade my a6400. I felt the need of getting a zoom lens and some of the Sigma apcs lenses for it instead of trying to upgrade my full frame lineup which would just be out of my budget at the moment.
My first camera i bought from a pound shop, it was a nikon. I paid like $150 or $200. then i bought a refurbished t6i from canon refurbished for like $450 with kit lens. The most recent i bought was from a local seller canon 6d M2, and a macro lens. I have baught many lenses used and i have sold as well. The only lens I bought new was the 50mm 1.8 because it was so cheap that i didn't want to spend a lot of time seeking a deal to save only $30-50.
Im still using the Atlas Pack I bought from you, earlier this year and I purchased a used a7riii from Samy's Camera back in July. Shutter count may have been pretty high but it still works like new.
8:04 oh uhhhh too late.... when I started working at my current job, our camera was dirty. I had some idea on how cameras should be cleaned, and let’s say my boss had none. But since I was more of an editor than camera, I asked how to clean the camera, and I was told to use wipes. The sensor had some prints and yeahhh.... they said it was ok. A year later and luckily the camera still works. 👍 (Sony A7 II)
I prefer to buy from sellers who show photos of the actual gear, have a description of the actual gear, preferably allow for a return, and will respond with real answers to questions. The big sellers you listed show photos of new gear, give generic descriptions of the condition, and answer questions with, "It's locked in our warehouse and we can't look at it."
I am trying to sell my older Canon camera set up. Trying FB marketplace, offer up and Gear focus. I had one guy on FB marketplace ask if I could ship it to them. I haven't been wanting to do that for I have heard about scammers that say they never got it, Even with tracking, and paypal refunds them and they did get the equipment. I still have the old gear.
Great video and advice! I bought my first dslr on Craigslist a few years ago and have been doing photography ever sense. Buying used kit is especially a great way to go if your trying to test the waters of photography!
Map Camera, a camera shop from (Shinjuku? ) Japan is a great company. Bought the Sony 100-400mm GM lens and the Sony 1.4x teleconverter from them on EBAY. AWESOME customer service, fast delivery and packaging. PLUS FREE SHIPPING.
I'm pretty sure you can get your money back for receiving damaged goods purchased through eBay. Like what Jason mentioned, eBay has a buyer protection...and it's pretty good as long as you act on the issue right away.
myles maata yes luckily I had a making video to prove!! Otherwise I don’t know what would had the situation been!!! It was 6th ave who sold it!! Paid money back after 10days!!!
not sure about the situation on your end, but in Singapore, there are ALOT of re-sellers.. they will attempt to lowball sellers and re-sell the item(s) to buyer(s) at ridiculous amounts.. very often these re-sellers don't even have basic knowledge of lenses and cameras..
Literally just bought Sony ZV-1 used from B&H Photo for only $560 and its practically brand new no scuffs or marks, also came with the box. I’m pretty sure someone just returned it and didn’t like the camera so they have to sell it as used. Used gear FTW!
Great video. I prefer my used gear transactions in person and cash or with a local camera store. I've been ripped off once buying an Amazon warehouse item. Partially my fault for not opening & testing the item before the return period was up. Had bought an external HD which someone had cracked open and replaced the innards.
I bought from facebook marketplace and I've been selling stuff. Most people are relatively decent but it depends on where you live. There are quite a few lowballers though...
You didn't mention KEH. I really don't like buying gear on ebay, but from reputable stores I'd consider it. Also refurbished by the manufacturer is pretty good too.
oh yeah, KEH! I'm sure there are a bunch of sites that I haven't yet tried. This is a good starter guide for most, but for seasoned bargain hunters, I'm betting KEH and MBP are gems!
The biggest con in my opinion are extending warranty s as most modern tech products outlast the manufacturer warranty and extended warranty offered by insurance companies they are usually money for nothing so lack of warranty with pre owned tech isn't really an issue for me but then if i am going to be spending a couple of hundred on anything i prefer it to brand new rather than used because of the risk involved with pre owned gear
I HAVE BOUGHT FROM B AND H ADORAMA AND KEH, ALMOST ALL MY LENS ARE USED, THE ONLY THING I HAVE NOT GOTTEN IS A USED CAMERA, WAS LOOKING FOR A7II THEN THEY WENT ON SALE SO GOT NEW. TIMING IS EVERY THING.
very nice. the only downside for second hand is... TAX RETURN it really needs to be a great deal, in order to be worth it. unless it's a hobby, then it's a no brainer
I love how restaurants are still open. You wear a mask to walk in, but then take it off as soon as you sit down at the table. Then you have dozens of people sitting in the restaurant without a mask. I guess Rona only affects people who are standing...
This video is a little old now but is it worth it to meet up to look at the camera if it’s only $285? If not, how do I check to see if the camera is okay? I’m eyeing a listing on Facebook marketplace right now

@@baron6271 cool, great kit. I'm contemplating moving the 24gm along for a wider prime or zoom.
Really good advice! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Hey, I thoroughly enjoyed this video! The content value was helpful, easy to understand, straight forward and entertaining!
super helpful! thanks a ton
6:28 I always ask any Craigslist seller to meet me at my bank. We do the inspection inside the bank and I go to the teller and get the cash directly from them. Everyone is happy.
Hey Jason!
Great video and I agree 100% with your points.
Here was my journey from $600 to an A7RIV:
I bought a used A7II used for $600
Sold the A7II for $800 (profit = $200)
Bought a used A7RII for $750
Sold the A7RII for $1300 (profit = $600)
Bought a used Sony 24-70 2.8 GM for $1300
Sold the Sony 24-70 2.8 GM for $1600 (profit = $300)
Bought a used Sony A7RIII for $1600
Sold the Sony A&RIII for $2200 (profit = $600)
Bought a used Sony A9 for $2100
Sold the Sony A9 for $2500 (profit = $400)
Bought a used A7RIV for $2500
Now I have a Sony A7RIV
It took me 4 months to reach this.
lol! You took camera trading to a whole new level! That's awesome!
Well done instructional

Always fun watching esp the Covid self test. So Authentic I had to wipe the monitor and my desk LOL Always great videos I was there at the Pasadena camera show. You guys are just as nice in person. Jason, just a quick idea, I don't shoot video but if you ever need a topic can you discuss the video profiles and the differences you speak about (s log video etc?) Thanks!
Thanks for this!!
Thank you sir 🙂🙏🏻
Thanx for info that everyone already knows.
in 2015 I bought a superb used Nikon kit: camera D7100 (6K shooter counter like new) vr g218-200 lens. flash Nikon sb910 2memory Hight speed and brand cads and a big brand professional Bag.
more than 3.000$ kit with only 900$.
working great till now.
The real problem with some sellers is that they are as skilled as a used car salesman they know you know that they know or that you know nothing at all
Nice content👍🏽😎👍🏽
Good points most people are not scammers. If the person seems knowledgeable and has a lot of backstory in the hobby they probably are legitimate
Great info Jaison Bro🌈Worth to Watch🤗
All my bodies and lenses are 2nd hand. Have been buying and selling for over 20yrs and never had a bad experience that resulted in total loss.
(Sony A7 II)
I can’t find an Siii anywhere 😔
I love ❤️ buying used gear. I have had a lot of luck getting great deals. On the flip side I have had a hard time selling used gear.
Buying used kit is especially a great way to go if your trying to test the waters of photography!
the handing of the corona bottle made lol pretty hard
Map Camera, a camera shop from (Shinjuku? ) Japan is a great company. Bought the Sony 100-400mm GM lens and the Sony 1.4x teleconverter from them on EBAY. AWESOME customer service, fast delivery and packaging. PLUS FREE SHIPPING.
That’s cool!!!! I wanted to buy lens 😀😀. I am scared to buy from eBay !! I got a broken glass ( sony 135mm ) !!!!
Bought my A7III and Tamron 28-75 used, saved hundreds and no complaints so far. Maybe i got lucky...
What's your garage sale site? Would like to take a look once you're back open.
I buy all my lenses/lights grey market .. I buy my main camera at my local camera store to support them & to have the warranty
How much does shutter count matter with a mirrorless camera?
@jason Vong when will you doing a guide for the a7siii?
not sure about the situation on your end, but in Singapore, there are ALOT of re-sellers.. they will attempt to lowball sellers and re-sell the item(s) to buyer(s) at ridiculous amounts.. very often these re-sellers don't even have basic knowledge of lenses and cameras..
Advertisements have gotten so long that I forgot that there's occasionally a skip button SMH
So where can I find the new sony A7siii. Used for a discount haha.
Literally just bought Sony ZV-1 used from B&H Photo for only $560 and its practically brand new no scuffs or marks, also came with the box. I’m pretty sure someone just returned it and didn’t like the camera so they have to sell it as used. Used gear FTW!
What the heck? That’s a solid deal for it!
There are quite a few lowballers though...
i always get lowballed on Facebook lol. The one annoying thing is the message notifications since it's connected to my personal account.
You just read my mind
There need to be a stockx for cameras
I saved $2k buying a Fuji GFX50S used.
My kind of video
TAX RETURN
it really needs to be a great deal, in order to be worth it.
unless it's a hobby, then it's a no brainer
Is a 25,000 shutter count too much for a A7Riii?
I love how restaurants are still open. You wear a mask to walk in, but then take it off as soon as you sit down at the table. Then you have dozens of people sitting in the restaurant without a mask. I guess Rona only affects people who are standing...
This video is a little old now but is it worth it to meet up to look at the camera if it’s only $285? If not, how do I check to see if the camera is okay? I’m eyeing a listing on Facebook marketplace right now
jason what if the sensor has covid, should we test the gear for covid??
I’ve used MPB to buy and sell! Great experience!
Iam open to idea of buying 2nd hand. Just afraid of getting scammed on my months of savings.
7:44 gloves don't need to be worn if you wash your hands, the things you touch, and don't have any cuts or scraps on your hands.
