I had this happen 2 times and the only thing I involved my insurance company for was getting THEIR insurance info. I then opened a case with their insurance company, uploaded the vids of their client hitting my car, they estimated damage and sent me checks.

I feel your pain. Two years ago I took my (then) 96 YO mom to a doctor appt. I normally park far away from anyone else, this time I parked close to the door for mom's sake. Some old geezer pulled in on the right, cut the turn too wide and caved in the right rear quarter panel. All he did was move over one spot to the right. He gets out and looks at my damage, then looks at his damage. I was sitting in the car looking at the videos when the geezer walked past, said nothing, at that point I hadn't found the footage yet, he left without saying anything, he saw me sitting in the passenger's seat. Found the video clip when a cop arrived. Unfortunately, Florida does no require a front plate. Cost me over $3000. out of pocket.

Its really gets on my nerve when people park their cars next to mine even if I have parked way far off in the lot. There are instances when there literally are a couple of cars in the vacant lot and I see a car parked right next to mine that too on my driver side door.
There are multiple times when I had people ding my car. Once, I had parked in a State govt parking lot (again far at the opposite end), I see a car driving and park next to mine. When I come back after few minutes and see they had crashed into my rear bumper dislodging it from those plastic clips, I saw a paper chit inside the rear window wiper. Thinking the driver must have left his contact details, I opened the paper chit and it was BLANK. Had to spend few hundreds to fix the damn thing out of my pockets just to not hike my insurance.

Hi i1 Tesla. I have a video titled "My Tesla Model 3 Door was Dinged (6/6/20) - Royalty free" and your scenario was exactly mine! Unfortunately, the police said that this was too minor of an accident that they will not do nothing about it, even with video evidence. A case number was only filed, that's all. This happened at the concord mall parking lot at NC!! My car was parked far away from the mall entrance with plenty of parking space. NOT SURE WHY THIS GUY PARKED NEXT TO ME! Fyi: my door was dented but factory paint was still intact with the clear coating a bit rubbed off.

I had a similar situation and I simply provided the evidence to my insurance agent who took care of the rest (contacting the other owner’s insurance, going through the process, etc). Sorry this happened to you, it really stinks when people have such low regard for other people’s property!

Sorry to hear about what happened. I have farmers and they were able to track down the owner of the car and provide their insurance info. I contacted their insurance, Safeco/liberty mutual, and they helped me the rest of the way. I filed a claim and sent them pictures and video of the incident. Ultimately they acknowledged it was the fault of the other driver and now my car is currently in the shop being repaired at the other insurances expense. They are also paying for my rental car while my Y is in the shop. Just something to consider since you’re thinking about switching to another provider. I live in CA btw.

Door dings is not considered a hit and run. No police report is taken. The police could help you obtain the other party's insurance information. Just contact your insurance company, provide the other party's plate and insurance info if you have comprehensive coverage. If you have liability coverage only, contact the other party's insurance directly. Also, don't just stop a police officer on the street if they are driving. They are likely driving to a call for service. What you did by going to the police station is fine.

It's in a private parking lot, so you'll want to go to your insurance and they'll go after their insurance or them directly if they don't have insurance.
EDIT: Now I've watched the video and see you came to the same conclusion. You shouldn't have to pay out through. Your insurance should pay it. It also shouldn't affect your insurance because it was damage caused by someone else. Even if your insurance does make you pay, they'll be able to get their information and then you could sue to force them to pay any amount you are out, including your deductible, likely legal fees, and also likely damages from future increases in insurance rates.

I really like not having to worry about this now with the Cybertruck! I just have to worry about taking a chunk out of other cars with my door :) I put my hand behind the door when I open it for the kids. The 90 degree opening doors are good but a bit hazardous to other vehicles.
I couldn't even get insurance to track down a commercial truck that shattered my window by dropping stones from an untarped load. Sent video, you could clearly see, everything, including the stones falling, and insurance didn't bother. It went on my record.
You can sue them in small claims court if you have the name. The video is clear cut for court.

you police force is not doing their job. The defendant caused damage to property and left the scene. In my state it is against the law to leave the scene. They prosecute that here. I was a victim. Do you mean that if vandals caused $2,000 damage and took off the police would do nothing. Ridiculous. Make police report. Demand that they do so These guys are to doing their job. I'm an attorney.. You can get your insurance co to subrogate against the defendant and they will accomplish the same.

First of all, you need to file a police report regardless of what they tell you. Your insurance company will ask for this. This would fall under comprehensive since neither of your car's were moving and you would not be found at fault. Your insurance company will go after their insurance company to get their money and your rates will not go up. What they did is still criminal property damage

I think you're overthinking things. You can switch insurance companies at any time. Progressive would prorate your refund. Don't drive around looking for them or approach them. Since you have their plate numbers either have Progressive file the claim against their insurance company or have them tell you who they're insured with and do it yourself.

  • @Resist4

Unfortunately people are jerks. And, parking spots are just too narrow because they want to fill as many vehicles in them as possible. You pretty much have to practice defensive parking, putting your car as far away from other vehicles as possible. Yet just as you discovered, even doing so some idiot will park right next to your car because apparently people can't park correctly unless another vehicle is in the next spot. The fact that a she knew what she did and they moved their vehicle as not to be blamed, shows you what kind of people they are. I don't know why it's so difficult for people to open their vehicle doors more carefully and not all the way when parked next to someone. And if they did ding another vehicle, why they can't own up to it. I guess bad people just do bad things. Hope you post pictures of the people and their vehicles with the license plate number all around town. Door dings are my biggest fear owning a Tesla and is probably preventing me from buying a Model X Plaid.

Although it is a non-moving violation, the act remains criminal. If you parked your car on the side of the street, and a neighbor's kid hits a baseball causing it to veer and smash your windshield, then culpability remains existent. The police did a poor job of investigating the matter. Your option here is proceeding with a property damage claim for a small claims court. You have the evidence necessary to take this course, and prevail for financial damages.

Still many people drive away from it in my country as well, which is a shame. If you own a car here. Insurance is mandatory, so you will never meet another car that is uninsured.

The big problem is when the other party has the same insurance company as you. The insurance company will do everything in their power to avoid having to pay anything out, which means they will try to discourage you from pursuing it.
Don't get me started on the cops. They don't want to do anything that looks like actual work, so they'll lie their @sses off about what they "can't" do and about not having jurisdiction on private property, etc. The fact is, it doesn't matter whether the vehicles were moving or where it happened. There is always at least one law that applies. The cops are also much quicker to throw the book at somebody who looks like they can't fight back than somebody who looks like they can afford a decent lawyer. That Grand Cherokee driver is one of the latter.
There's also no telling who is connected to whom. If the perpetrator is friends with the insurance agent or somebody in the police department, you're out of luck.

Yea Brian it sucks man for sure been there quite a few times owning Tesla's
I actually had the very same thing happen back in 2019 when our Tesla Model 3 was only 2 weeks old!
Crazy thing is it happened over a rock chip in the windshield and my wife took the car to safelite glass.
When see parked and went inside to see about getting the glass repaired someone slammed their door into our car the same way.
She confronted the people and told them they would have to get the insurance to fix the door with tiny dent and paint chip.
We got a quote from a local Tesla body shop and it was over 1000$ I asked why it was so much?
The shop tech explained they would strip the door of all hardware and remove to repaint it.
I told them to just forget it because all that work to fix a chip for 1000$ was ridiculous....
The way I started to have to look at it because it was driving me crazy too is you won't have the car forever these days.
The cost and aggravation to fix something so minor is crazy and not worth the hassle when your good at doing things yourself.
I mean your good at wrapping Tesla's, I rebuilt two wrecked ones and got them back on the road driving everyday.
The other sad part about our Model 3 that was new after 2 years and 100k miles my wife got into a accident.
The insurance company totaled the car and wouldn't let me keep it as the retention value was too high.
We ended up taking the cash and putting towards a new Model Y, which we got almost a year later....
So yea that's my take on it gotta just let the small stuff go so when a big thing happens its worth doing.
    Take it easy man,
    Casey
