  • I have gone through how to make this recipe, however I think that this would have been better if cooked in a shallow pan.

I love my halogen oven and use it so much that I seldom need the big one. This recipe looks so good and I wouldn't have thought to cook toad in the hole, one of my favourites. Thanks very much Jan.

Such a lovely video 😊 I am starting to love my halogen oven as I currently don't have a standard oven. I am making toad in the hole tonight:)

Here is a yorkshire pudding tip, and it sounds daft but really does make a difference to the puddings. I always rested the batter for about 30 minutes before I cook them, but someone said to me "Rest it for a minimum of 2 hours".
Just out of interest I tried it, and it works, they will rise better and crisp up better, less risk of stodgy bottoms.

Jan you need to buy a ninja foodi max as that'll take the place of your oven hob pots & frying pan. It's brilliant and it cuts down on the electricity bills.

I attempted the very same recipe twice quite recently and wasn't entirely satisfied with the results. Jan's point on the depth of a dish looks like a good one though, as I was using more of a casserole dish without the lid on. It's a shame the book doesn't include pictures or images of the finished meals but then, it was free with the oven.

If you use a shallow dish, won't it be very messy? The batter is quite runny.

I know yiou were just trying it out, but I would have used (in the first tin you used) probably 1/2 the batter that you used. Maybe with that size tin a little less tan 1/2.
Also (and this is a man thing) put 1/2 small onion in when doing the first part with the sausages, it makes it even richer and don't pour the batter over the sausages, instead let it flow around them.
Rgat 2nt tin I think will do better, if you have something that size but taller sides that would be about the size of the tin I use in the regular oven on a Sunday,, but use less batter less than 1/2 the mix that you used.

Looking tasty. Have you ever had issues with the halogen bulb? I have a JML oven and it's now 4 years old and still on the original bulb but i've read this is almost a miracle as they last on average only 12 months. I only use mine for oven chips so wouldn't miss it if it broke and i couldn't repair it easily.

***** My last old halogen cooker the bulb went, but only after 5 years. Decided on a new model and this Andrew James model came along for £39.00 including a spare halogen bulb. Loved the red colour . A positive bargain I think. Al.

Hi jan ive just brought a halogen oven and very new to cooking with it i fibd it burns the top of the food , im quite unsure what to cook with it . Your toad in the hole recipe looks lovely, a family fav in my busy household im just not sure how to prepare for 6 servings many thanks kelly

Kelly Midmore Hi Kelly, Yes it can be challenging to not burn the food. I find that using the spacer helps, however the food can take a little longer to cook. Another tip is to cover the top of the food with tin foil, but you need enough tin foil to go around the container otherwise the fan effect can cause it to float upwards to the heating element. You can brown something off and then cover or the other way around. cover then brown off at the end of cooking. Regarding cooking for 6 people it is about having a container that fits the oven so have a good look around the shops although I have had many utubers suggest that I cook in the bowl of the halogen so that eliminates any cooking utensils. I will give this a go in the new year. I think as i usually only cook for the two of us I do not have a problem with getting a cooking pot to fit, however maybe give cooking direct in the bowl a go? Thanks and good luck, Jan

I love your cooking Jan! Are sausages in the UK different than in the US? Are those italian sausages or breakfast sausages. Also you seem to put gravy on everything (not a bad thing) but could you tell us how you make it please. Thanks!!!

Tabby catz Hi Tabby, the sausages are all made by local butchers over here, or you can buy the supermarket ones which are mainly made in England. We do not have a breakfast sausage as such. My gravy is usually a mix of herbs with a stockpot , mixed with gravy granules. Jan.
