The Legend of Hannu Mikkola: Told Through his Sons
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 кві 2024
- When Vesa and Juha Mikkola came to Goodwood’s Festival of Speed last year, it was for one reason: to drive Audi’s original rally-redefining, all-conquering quattro up the hill.
To drive their dad’s car.
We gave them another reason. Or DirtFish owner Steve Rimmer did. Would they like to talk about their dad? They're memories of Hannu at home. Of the world champion they knew. The mentor and driver. Yes, they would.
And would Steve like to conduct the interview? Yes, he very much would.
The Mikkolas were perfect company. And the big thing about a big interview is turning it into a conversation. That’s where the skill sits, using your passion to bring out the emotion. Chapeau Mr R. You nailed it.
This is the result. Sit back and enjoy an entertaining, insightful and emotional half-hour of rallying.d.

Back in the 80's, my dad's navigator nicknamed him 'Hannu', after this magnificent driver. I'm fortunate that with the advent of digital media technology, I get to piece together the relevance of that nickname! ❤
Hannu Mikkola will forever be cherished as a Legendary two time winner in the Safari Rally Kenya 🇰🇪 Thanks Dirtfish for paying homage.
The tribute Rally Finland did to the rally and to then recently passed Mikkola was so beautiful. Please go and watch it, it's on youtube. Impossible to watch without tears.
The ultimate rally driver. And a gentleman this sport deserved.
If it's the same one I'm thinking of, yeah. When I heard the straight 5 at the end, I sort of knew what was coming, and Mr. Vatanen's words at the end really jerked the tears. It was a wonderful tribute.
I saw Hannu waiting at stage start during the Welsh rally in '86 when he was told the news of Henri Toivonens death in Corsica. I will never forget the look on his face. A true legend of the sport.
Great to hear hannu's sons, their dad has a legacy that wont be forgotten.
Great interview.
RIP Rallyings legend no one came close to matching Hannu speed foresight or tanacity!
I must add that the Mikkola brothers are both as humble in success as their late father Hannu was.
Amazing,Hannu was at stoneleigh 2006 Superstar of our sport .
Remember his sterling performance in Safari Rally, 1972, in a Ford Escort. Times between cars were in hours and not seconds like today. His main competitor was Sobiesław Zasada in a Porsche
Safari Rally in those times were more like Dakar 👍👍
Real privateer Rally, Husbands & Wive as co-pilot. Real Rally in its essence.
Hannu Mikkola is the first name I remember from times of growing up. But all and all the group B era that followed was a a great time for a finnish kid.
Hannu made me love rallying the first time I saw him driving I was a little boy and he wow me and I never stop watching rallying from that day till now
thanks for the historical content, we need more!
Not just one of the all time greats but a real gentleman to all no matter what the circumstances winning or losing.
shoutout to this channel from all of us audi/quattro fans. first the michele video now hannu. Now we need a audi 200/90 imsa video with hurley haywood rohrl and stuck
Legend.
How come there are so many amazing drivers from Finland? Three F1 world champions (Keke Rosberg (and Nico sort of too), Hakkinen, Raikkonen) and crazy amount of rally stars? There have been probably 50 Italian drivers in F1 and no champions since Ascari. LOL.
He was a legend.
While everyone rightly remembers Hannu with the Quattro, my memories of him are slightly older from the Mk2 Escort era. He was head & shoulders above his peers in that era as well.
Nice shots of the Houghton Lift Bridge at about 26 minutes. Those rally's were sure fun in the early 80s mostly at night. It was a great interview to see him in action again.
I met Hannu in 1985 at the Olympus Rally in Washington state, he was driving the Audi S1 E2 prototype before it went back to Europe and competed there. He was so polite and generous with his time. Everything his sons have said about him was reflected in all the footage I have seen over the years of being one of the nicest people out there. I also watched the Dirtfish 'Women in Motorsport' videos recently and the interview with Michele Mouton who talked about her friendship with Hannu and what a close friend he was. He is very much missed and I'm glad to have been alive at a time he was at the top of his game.
I saw him there at Olympus as well. Pitty that there is no video of that event.
@@GianniBuroni Yes, it's a shame. I was able to see the first stage in downtown Tacoma, the car accelerated as fast as a superbike! I also saw him at the service before the forest stages. I was working on my carburator and Hannu looked over briefly to see that. I got the impression that he would have liked to come over and help out. But, work calls. . .
Fantastic video! More like this, please!
Wonderful tribute!
Thanks Stephen and Dirtfish!!!
R.I.P legend
What an amazing video
I was ten years old when I was watching Group b cars what a fantastic period with such great drivers
Top video ❤
I think his master plan was to stay airborne as long as possible to save on tyre wear.
19:40 Ari Vatanen comments.
Such a decent person, even beyond his rally accomplishments.
For me - Finland means rally, best roads and drivers! And if it involves an Audi quattro - it is perfect!
So happy to be the FIRST to comment. Thanks DirtFish for the great video.
27:43 this car was sold by Juha Kankkunen.
Hannu 💪🇫🇮
I think im more finnish than these two and im from Yorkshire.
Watch & learn about the legendary Hannu Mikkola from this video, instead of that trash movie called Race for Glory
They sound American. I don't know why I expected a heavy accent.
cause it is rare for finns to speak english without a really heavy accent. Not that there aren't finns that speak english really well but I feel like it's rare for them to get to be on screen.
Their grandparents had a holiday apartment in the US south east, the family spent a good bit of time there.
Am I the only one who finds some resembleance of Juha Mikkola and Ken Block?
Ootko oikeesti hannu mikkolan poika, jos oot ni kunnioitan paljon
I love dirtfish
They should be given more freedom to cover whole stages.
If WRC wants to expand its fanbase like F1. More free content brings more money!
Its a more spectacular sport, and the pinnacle.
Holy **** they speak good english for being finns. Kerrankin joku puhuu sujuvaa englantia eikä ralli englantia.
