An incredible man and gift to the world. Ben-Hur is one of the greatest films ever made and its score is a masterpiece. Thank you for this documentary.
I once performed two pieces of Miklos Rozsa on the piano and uploaded the videos in youtube. Later his daughter Juliet Rozsa contacted me, thanking me for honoring her fathers work. I thought I was losing my mind, it was such an overwhelming honour since I admire her father's music since my early childhood. I'm overjoyed to see her in this documentary!
Oh wow...this documentary had me in tears. My father introduced me to Ben-Hur, Quo Vadis, El Cid when I was 8 years old. I'm now 46 and I treasure those films in memory of my father and I've been a musician all my life and it has been my life career. Miklós Rózsa's musica has influenced my musical career my entire life. I loved this interview documentary. I wish it was longer. I enjoyed it! Thank you Dann for posting this amazing treasure for us to enjoy.
Wow! I don't even remember doing the interview for this and I am so grateful that it is out and available. Those of us fortunate enough to have known him thank you for posting this. John
+John Mauceri Thank you for your comment. I first became aware of Dr. Rozsa's work as a boy of 7 when I went with my cousin to see "Ben Hur" at our theater in St. John's, Newfoundland. I was immediately struck from the very first note and continue to enjoy his music today.
I first learned of Miklós Rózsa through an interview Jerry Goldsmith did. Out of curiosity, since Goldsmith was one of two of my all-time favorite film composers, I began collecting Rózsa scores and I came away very impressed. Hard to find since I collect CDs primarily but I eventually was able to collect seventeen individual scores ranging from The Thief of Bagdad (1940) to Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (early 1980s), including such in-between epics such as Quo Vadis, Ben-Hur, King of Kings, etc. A gorgeous work of musical art. If you are a fan of film music or even just composition style, I highly recommend this
I became a fan of Rozsa seeing Ivanhoe when I was 13; the music made an impression on me for it's grandeur and impact; I always like Classical/film music. His score for Ben Hur was the most emotion packed score I ever saw in the Movies.
I shall always treasure the times I spent with Dr Rozsa, whether it was during a recording session, a visit to his beautiful home, dining in a restaurant in such diverse locations as Seattle, Los Angeles or London. He was a great raconteur, a man with a pithy, dry humour, and someone who never found fault in others.
Thanks for uploading this. I' m Spanish and the OST you speak here of the most, El Cid, brings tears to my eyes. He captured the essence of my country back in that century. Apart from other soundtracks King of Kings is also magnificent with the mother theme_oboe and Christ_violin and really heartbreaking tunes.
Superb documentary on composer Miklos Rozsa 's great . One of the most important pillars of the twentieth century in the soundtrack for the film . Thank you very much.
Thank you for this documentary! I remember Miklos Rozsa as a music composer, period. Recordings of his film scores have clarified that these works are symphonic poems. Today, his film music can be heard in concert halls.
Really enjoyed this. Have been listening to a lot of Rosza. No mention of his other film music, notably "Double Indemnity" (which some say is the greatest film noir). Rozsa saw this film as a dark, tragic love story and the score paints so many moods and scenes with a single motive (alla Beethoven!). I highly reccommend his Theme, Variations, and Finale for Orchestra for a very cinematic experience (now I hear the Prokofiev influence as well!)
Beautiful documentary. Interesting point that Rozsa blossomed within an era of film music where the soundtrack was 90% of the length of the movie. My favourite film composer.
Dr. Rozsa and Maestro Alfred Newman inspired me as a young person to study composition. Truly they were the greats, the giants of film and symphonic composition. My only regret is that I never studied with them. I hope that someday pocket editions of their film score music will be published so that students may profit from heir great example.
I cannot speak as to where Dr. Rozsa's information would be but you should contact the Music Department of the University of Southern California about Alfred Newman.
Fascinating documentary, very nicely put together, not too sycophantic (as can sometimes be the case) and quite moving ! Love the dissection of the El Cid score which is probably my favourite of his historical epics.
Quite interesting the points about parts of Rosza's score being cut out. At the 17:48-18:05 mark it is explained that his score is replaced by a rhythmic drum piece. I heard that drum piece before! It was in the "spaghetti western" film by Italian director Sergio Leone, "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. Near the very end of the film when Clint Eastwood is leaving a cemetery with bags of gold on horseback riding off into the sunset, and leaving fellow mercenary Tuco in the cemetery (with a rope around his neck) this same drum piece is clearly scoring the scene. I thought everything musical in that film was composed by Italian Ennio Morricone. So, I'm thinking maybe Morricone "sampled" Rosza from "El Cid," BUT if Rosza's music wasn't there in the first place (then they aren't HIS drum beats) then maybe Morricone is indeed using his own stuff. I concluded then that the Italian who was sharing undeserved credit for the score written by Rozsa was Morricone. The simple drum beat "score" anybody could have written, but technically speaking it could be said he (Morricone) made a token contribution to the score to avoid outright fraud. Of course I'm just speculating, but was quite surprised when I heard what I thought was an "original" sound piece from a Clint Eastwood flick. I've never seen the movie "El Cid," I've heard only the main theme. Then I noticed that a poster to this site, jslasher1 said the Italian composer was Mario Nascinbene.

BEN HUR score was excellent but KING OF KINGS 1961 exemplifies the best of all musical composition. I also like his earliest composition from Themes Variations, and Finale that was used in the second season of tv's Adventures of Superman.

My cousin, John Steven Lasher, knew Dr Rozsa for many years, producing 3 albums featuring his music. John had the highest respect for Dr Rozsa.
Can you explain why you and this video are referring to him as "Dr" Rozsa? There's no mention of him having a doctorate anywhere I've seen.
Dr Rozsa most certainly held a Doctorate in Musicology.
I am updating this video.. to include Ben Hur...I wanted to let you know
Lovely to see this again. What an honor to have known him and record his music with him in the room!

when you say you collected the scores, do you mean the recordings of each piece or the actual musical scores? thank you for your answer

Every time you hear his music it makes you feel good 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you so much for this documentary! Doing my masters thesis on Rozsa.

Brilliant composer. His music brought you into the story.
Exactly. Take his score for ''Lust for Life.'' From the opening notes over the title credits, you begin to feel thetroubled soul of Vincent van Gogh.
that's touching to see Rozsa's daughter and son.....
The man who wrote Ben Hur - divinely inspired work if ever there is one ! Look forward to meet the man one day.
One of my favorite all time music composers for film! My favorites are Ben Hur and El Cid!
Wonderful documentary! Bravo to maestro Rózsa and friends who had the privilege to know him!!

Thank you so much for posting this. There aren’t many videos about Rozsa, one of my all time favourite composers.
Maravilloso compositor de bandas sonoras. Para mi el mejor del mundo.
What a wonderful tribute! Thank you!
Truly a man of fascinating ears!!!!..........and eyes for marriying the beauteous Gina Lollobrigida.!!!!!

This is tremendous! Thank you SO MUCH For posting this documentary. What a valuable educational experience about an unsung master.
I would like to know why give somebody dislike for this documentary. I'm just curious why. Don't be shy light me up.
Miklos -- a genius above so many.....

Beautiful documentary.
This is the feature produced for the "Miriam Collection" DVD of "El Cid" in 2008. Some acknowledgment would be appropriate.
Thanks for this wonderful piece !!!
Thanks for uploading this! :)
"spellbound" is one of my favorite movies. i always wondered if rozsa actually played the violin in the library scene with ingrid bergman.

He doe snot need this "Dr.", this lower his status
Rozsa could make a movie into a classic by the score he created for it...even war movies.
Witness 'Sahara' with Bogart. A movie that still holds it place among the greatest of that genre.
