The greatest film EVER made. I've seen the best, like Casablanca, Godfather, Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, but none of those, or any other, can beat Ben Hur. It is a perfect movie, the top, the truly, the genuine epic. Great plot, outstanding actings, Charlton Heston making a brilliant performance, the supporting characters like Messala, Balthazar and Sheik Ilderin doing a hell of a job... And the soundtrack. Well, the soundtrack is beautiful. Is a masterpiece composed by the genius Miklos Rosza. Sometimes i cant hold my tears watching it. By the way... I'M AN ATHEIST !

George Berger Just because there are many fine European and Soviet films doesn't mean "Ben Hur" can't be the greatest film ever made. Not saying it is, but that doesn't mean it can't be.
When my parents took us to see the movie in 1959, they were selling the boxed record set of the soundtrack in the movie lobby. My father purchased it for me, and I still have it. Listen to it occasionally on my turntable...Nothing beats vinyl to get this sound....Still brings tears to my eyes everytime I listen to this soundtrack....
I too saw the movie, at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood in 59'. They had the original chariot used by Mesala outside by the entry. I came away with the full color program, and later my parents bought me the album. In my top 10 movies.

I've heard other versions of this soundtrack, but they all lack that special Miklos Rozsa touch. I love this movie and the soundtrack! Yes, this is a wonderful performance by the maestro himself. I have listened to this wonderful music since I was 7, and still am listening to it. I could say that I can not live without it.

And God reached down and touched the soul of a man with his music and that man was Miklos Rozsa. Miklos Rozsa was best-known for the music of dozens of 'sword-and-sandals' epics from the 50's and 60's, and he was, indeed, the master of that genre. If we want to compare, one could put Max Steiner's 1939 masterwork for "Gone With the Wind", so good that David O. Selznick waited until literally the last minute to add it to the final cut, or John Williams' original 1977 "Star Wars" music, which is still being played 40 years on. All three men are masters of their craft, and each would probably defer to the other when asked. Great work by Previn's Pittsburgh Symphony for faithfully recreating the sound and feel of the original, with Rosza himself at the helm.
I'm never tired of listening to this awesome musical score. As I close my eyes to listen to this wonder, it takes me back in time when the story takes place and leaves me wander away with my thoughts!!
Finest film score in film history. I dare say it won't be matched. I've never seen the man before, this is a very special treat. And this was during some of the best days for the Pittsburgh Symphony. Previn had them very precise.

Miklos Rozsa (RIP) was a musical genius. Ben Hur set the bar so high it is seldom equaled, has not been surpassed, and I doubt it ever will be. "Spellbound Concerto," also by Miklos Rozsa, is another extraordinary masterpiece. I'm transcended--have an "out of body" experience, every time I listen to these, soul moving scores.
Actually, i have Spellbound Concerto as the second best Rozsa's piece, many will point scores like Quo Vadis or King of Kings, but for me it'll have to be The El Cid March. 1. Ben Hur Suite 2. Spellbound Concerto 3. The El Cid March
This is the best and greatest picture I have seen in my lifetime. Because it helps you to grow spiritually. And the actor Charlton Heston became my famous actor.

So, I took some photos of him, and I decided to send them to my country, so my sister could have them, because, she admired him very much...Well, I found out, later, that my sister, never received those photos!!...They were "lost"!....What a pity!!!.....But, I am very thankful, I saw him!.....
I love this music. There are many brilliant and ingenious film scores written by incredible composers, but as a musician / composer, I find this work at the top. The emotion and ability to express the story and Rozsa's incredible music visualization is powerful. His compositional skills were a perfect match for these type of Hollywood epics, and yet his music stands by itself as mastery works. The movie is brilliant, and so is it's composer.
Miklos with every cord you strike in me the greatness of being alive. You bring heaven to earth. Truly a gifted man! How lucky I was to be here on earth when you wrote these eternal pieces.
Simply the best music and for me, the best film of all time in my lifetime, a true epic if ever there was one - it will be hard for anyone to beat this.
...ILO PERU
This is a master in action, one of the best films ever made or likely to be made, one of the best stories ever told and memories of my youth. To all those who have never seen the film I wish you the same feelings I had as a boy, wonder and love for Christ
Thanks for posting. A magnificent composition and what a rousing rendition from Rozsa and this top class orchestra!Sounds quite similar to the version he also conducted for the National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, just 2 years earlier for Decca records. Love the tempo here - it's slower and has greater impact than the original soundtrack for the 1959 film.Wonderful to see - and hear - this.
A musical masterpiece. Simply, the best ever, by THE best ever to compose for film. Today's composers are good; this man was THE master. ----------Wolfsky9
Everytime when i be in Pula (Croatia) in front of the ancient Arena (google this) i have that score in my head...no wonder that Rosza wrote that into the collosseum in rome.
Maestro: permítame que me Incliné, qué Música, qué Película, qué Actores.que Escenas,el Más Humilde Admirador,Mis Felicitaciones, Todos los que Participaron,en Está Gran Obra.
Wow! The Pittsburgh Symphony is as good as any in the world to be able to duplicate this incredible piece as they did here. The emotion, the crispness and balance is truly impressive!
Cordialement.
Absolutely incredible performance. You can see how devotedly the orchestra was playing ... *for* Rozsa as well as for the beauty of the piece itself. I wonder if U.S. Civil War (and Union) General Lew Wallace realized how great was this wonderful work of our Judeo-Christian society and culture he was creating.
Still, THE best musical intro. of all-time. Our generation was so, so lucky to have been living in this time--great, GREAT, music! ------------Wolfsky9
I can answer your question with one word: arrogance. The arrogance of a intensely narcissistic generation that thinks history begins and ends with them and them alone, that is obsessed only with its present. By contrast, a brilliant man like Miklos Rozsa thought in terms of context, of the wider picture. A life long learner, he enthusiastically sought out knowledge of his contemporaries as well as that of the past. As a result, he was a deeply cultured man whose work was enriched by this legacy then, even as his work continues to enrich us today. Knowledge of the past gave him the keys to creating art of resonance in the present which, in turn, gave a great, lasting gift to the future of our culture. That is part of the reason why Rozsa's work remains so timeless. The rest lies in that deep mystery called talent . . . . but talent divorced from its historical context and cultural roots creates art which is as inarticulate, intellectually vacuous and emotionally barren as that of the corporatized "content" churned out nowadays.

It asctually changed my life, when I first saw it. I was 14 when I first saw it and I am 60 now and I love the film as much as I did bac
k then.
Oh My God My Heart almost stopped when i listen to miklos rozsa music he returned me to the fifties era
This is a master in action, one of the best films ever made or likely to be made, one of the best stories ever told and memories of my youth. To all those who have never seen the film I wish you the same feelings I had as a boy, wonder and love for Christ
The film was a bore for me, I have no time for religion or politics, the music however was exquisite.
I’ve seen Ben Hur many times and this incredible score never fails to move me deeply. Thank you Maestro Rozsa for creating such a musical masterpiece.
One of the greatest film score of all time! Awesome conductor and music...... forever remembered.
----------Wolfsky9
we are witnessing an epic of epics in artistic genius. Miklos Rosza should have a monument built. Seriously.
One of the best movie scores ever made ❤👍
Played this at full belt on my ipad walking around the circus Maximus in Rome with open toed sandals, for ten minutes I was Ben Hur
ha awesome me and my hubby did the same!
Great
Everytime when i be in Pula (Croatia) in front of the ancient Arena (google this) i have that score in my head...no wonder that Rosza wrote that into the collosseum in rome.
Except the film scene was set in a supposed Jerusalem Circus.
I can’t go to the collesium. There’s no way I could without screaming “ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!”
I loved his music without knowing it. He provided the background to these historical movies... If History has a sound, it is Miklos.
'Judah meets Esther' is probably the most emotional tune I have ever heard. Long live the Maestro's music!
Absolutely masterful!
beautiful music what a relief after having to suffer rap junk and no way to escape
Maestro: permítame que me Incliné, qué Música, qué Película, qué Actores.que Escenas,el Más Humilde Admirador,Mis Felicitaciones, Todos los que Participaron,en Está Gran Obra.
Love this. Incredible music by a great composer and fabulous orchestra.
Wow!
The Pittsburgh Symphony is as good as any in the world to be able to duplicate this incredible piece as they did here. The emotion, the crispness and balance is truly impressive!
Superbe !
Cordialement.
Je suis tout a fait d'accord.
The best epic music ever made in Hollywood
'Epic' is the perfect word for this music.
Sin Palabras.....
Solamente Escuchar...
Gracias Miklos
Absolutely incredible performance. You can see how devotedly the orchestra was playing ... *for* Rozsa as well as for the beauty of the piece itself. I wonder if U.S. Civil War (and Union) General Lew Wallace realized how great was this wonderful work of our Judeo-Christian society and culture he was creating.
THIS IS THE MUSIC WE MISS
Watching Dr. Rozsa conduct is such a Treasure. This video is a cherished Treasure. Such command and such brilliance!
the greatest orchestra ever i watched
The second selection at 3:54 is my favorite. Just beautiful.
A Magical Masterpiece!
Listening to this still moves me to tears. Spectacularly beautiful and spiritual.
From my favorite movie of all time!......💓🎥🏆🎬🎞️🎶💓
Mine too 😊
Concordo!
Please do not delete this from you tube.
These are the absolute gems, now preserved on youtube, that I hope generations can enjoy
Rozsa at the top of his form, and here he is in 1979 conducting his masterpiece. Bravo! Thank you for posting!
Yes, I agree, it makes me feel part of...... Greatest composer ever, thank you maestro M.Rozsa!!!!
Still, THE best musical intro. of all-time. Our generation was so, so lucky to have been living in this time--great, GREAT, music! ------------Wolfsky9
why are things getting worse - shouldn't they get better having stuff like this to learn from?
The rest lies in that deep mystery called talent . . . . but talent divorced from its historical context and cultural roots creates art which is as inarticulate, intellectually vacuous and emotionally barren as that of the corporatized "content" churned out nowadays.
there was a Ben-Hur remake this year (don't boot me for mentioning) - I can also hear his influence on John Williams :-)
Has Zimmer perfectly evokes the current generation, creating unimaginative, vacuous music for films of no great merit.
I couldn't agree more jslasher! A tidy summation of everything that's wrong with today's films and their scoring.
Magnificent. Stupendous. Fantastic. Beautiful. The greatest movie score ever written, from the greatest movie ever made, IMO.
Magnificient, wonderful. ..unforgettable soundtrack from Ben Hur
AGREED it was a great score and absolutely my favorite movie of all time Miklos Rosa was a tremendous composer
