People keep mentioning powder coating? I applauded when the marvellous rack was finished. Never said this to a man before, but hey, it's 2021 - hey man, great rack!
after powdercoating for years, ive found that you should start your timer when the powder hits full liquid state on the entire part. otherwise you may have under processed powder that isn't as durable.
Knowing how much you hate painting, this looks like a really good addition to your workshop. Been binging your back catalogue the last few weeks and loving every minute of it! Can't wait to see your next project :)
Good day one. I’m using an old refrigerator body. You know just the shell. I picked up four old stoves on side of road. Using the insulation and the flat metal. Made a larger oven using the heating element and two of the larger electric heating pads. Works really good. FYI: I had an appliance repair guy check out before use. Had to get a separate heat register to not over or under heat. Good luck you always make interesting projects. Give Jake a pad on the head from me.
One really good baking setup is using an electric smoker cabinet. A lot of the "repair/restore" channels in the community use them for baking paint. For the blasting cabinet, buy 3M self healing film, and put it on the inside. When it can't heal anymore, just replace it, and the glass remains clear. Cheaper than replacing glass or plastic.
PC, Painting, chemical coating, anodizing, etc. Are all tools in the tool box. All about the material you are working on, and what its intended purpose is. Can’t PC plastic, as parts will melt. PC is easy and fun, and worth getting into if you ask me. Painting has its place!
Something that isn't common but you can regulate the air pressure to change the amount of etch you get. Also different media can provide different finish. The valve or door at the bottom allows you to change media quickly. On the regulator for your gun you can if you want use two regulators. One to bring the pressure down to about 25 psi then the second stage to about the 5 psi you need. This works best with a large diaphragm regulator on the second stage. These are a lot more expensive but if you do this a lot it's worth it. Maybe not needed for what your doing though. To make an oven, I used galvanized steel, valley tin for roofing, over a steel tube frame. Two layers of 1 inch Iso board from a big box store, a PID controller using Two SSRs controlled by the PID controller. I used two oven heating elements on the bottom because my oven is almost 4 feet long. I haven't put steel on the outside yet but it's up and running great. The door is just two layers of that one inch iso board taped together using the aluminum tape in the heating and cooling department. With this idea you can make as big an oven as you need. Most powder coat oven have fans to circulate air and get an even temp. I'm not sure I going to do that but may. Maybe.
Powder coating is an awesome process and you'll love it. For painting you could try the Critter paint sprayer. It's cheap, you get pretty good results, and is so easy to clean up.
I love powder coating at home, was just down in the garage painting parts of the bike. Been wanting to look up how make a really tall oven, tall enuff to take a whole MC frame, that´d be perfect.
Thanks for sharing this. I was interested in trying powder coating at home, this gave me great insight. I think I will give it a try with some stuff. Thanks again.
Just a piece of advice, eventually you will end up sandblasting the inside of your glass viewing window. You can buy clear sheets to adhere to the inside and change them out periodically when you start having a harder time seeing through. Cool video though man. Always fun to watch you mess around with new stuff.
Very well done video on this subject, it’s funny I literally told my wife the other day I want to get into powder coating then this video gets uploaded so thanks!
Shop upgrades look great! I got a used blast cabinet, and looks like your tall like me, I raised mine on 4x4's way less fatigue as I'm usually there for a few hours.
Hello! My name is Daniel and I come from Poland. I love your movies. 🤗I admire your work both in the workshop and on the farm👍. I would like to work like you. Cool!👍👍 I am waiting for more films. greetings 👋
There's quite a few examples of DIY powder coating booths on UA-cam. With your skills I could see you designing and building a bad ass version that'll make your experience even better: no sweeping up the dust, it all gets sucked into filters and trapped.
I've been working on my powder coating setup as well. I'd love to see a follow-up to this, especially around anything you come up with around the marks your hooks left. Personally I have tried to minimize by using solid Ethernet wires (very thin). I've also seen many builds of ovens online and would love to see your take on it if you decide to make a larger oven.
great video! As someone who is retired and slowly getting into projects myself, it would be great to hear (even if just brand and model) what kind of tools and materials you are using for creating things like the oven rack and cutting larger diameter holes for your sand blaster, as much of this is new to me. Thanks
Always good to see your video's! Need to make my way down to see you two; however, there is so much work on the property - as you know - it is hard to break free.
Always use silicone plugs or tape to cover any threads before coating. It's better to not coat the threads rather than recut them afterward. Also think about hanging before you cut the parts, by adding small cut-away clips with holes here and there. Happy Easter and cheers from Chicago!
I found that when you are not happy with the PC results or you want a super finish the thing to do is give the part a good hand sanding with some 320 grit paper to knock off the gloss and more importantly, use the first coat as a guide coat and try to sand off everything. What stays fills in low spots like a surfacing primer but it will take the heat of the oven. All you need is a bare spot to ground to and it will coat just fine and the finish will be even better. If you are removing a mistake just sand out the blemish and knock off all the gloss and dust it again.
I'm wanting to try powder coating and home but my question is where you hang things up with those copper hooks does that part get powder coated on the material?
5:00 what media are you blasting with. My theory is sand has salts in it which leads to the part rusting from within. I'm sick of having parts rust through the powdercoat
Sand isn't a very good media. I use garnet because it cuts faster and some people say you want more profile for the powder to stick to. Aluminum oxide also cuts very well but is more expensive. The media can be blended and the amount of air pressure makes a difference. High air pressure breaks crushed glass, as I eventually figured out, which kind of defeats the purpose of crushed glass.
Can you mix powders to get other colors? Just curious, not that I plan on ever doing any coating. I just think it would be fun to be able to coat tool handles in custom colors.
Never fails I fond a channelnthat is amazing but on the other side of the U.S.. I LIVE IN DALLAS sounds like u are in thevseattle area. I used to live in Tacoma when it had an aroma. Also lived just outside Spanaway WA with a great view of zraineer. Where can I buy your items BLESSINGS Richard
Good vid one suggestion. Once you sandblast do not touch the material with your bare hands. Slip.on gloves are cheap and will ensure then oil from your hands do not transfer.
I love your content, and would like to see more of it in years to come. Please check out the hazards associated with powder coating and do what you think is right to protect your health.
Be really careful with the gun lol. If you touch the tip to the work pice by accident it will give you a hell of a zap. In addition for really consistent coloring. Use nitral gloves after sand blastinf and wash them down with alcohol. Oils of any kind will end up screwing with the finish.
Is there any downside to baking longer than it requires? (Wondering about waiting until they're at temp and then timing 20 minutes vs., say, just letting them go for 45 and assuming that they would take less than 25 min to come up to temp)
Is it possible to get mixed colors by adding two or more dry powders to get the "Custom" color you want? This video has everything I have come to expect from a Rainfall Project. BTW - I can see your artist wife becoming an active user of your new tool. You might start planes for a larger oven soon ---
I would be seriously worried about spraying in your workshop. You will get Powder everywhere, and that is not just a problem of dirt but also a serious danger to health as you will accumulate a lot of very fine particles over time. For the oven: a friend of mine build a system with moving stove plates that heat up only an area. With this he was able to coat 6 meter beams in his garage. Basically four stobe plates on a rail that are slowly moved over the part. Worked great. Maybe that is an option for you as well.
Wedding rings....good way for a farmer to lose a finger! My farmer husband wore his on our 2 week honeymoon, and it has subsequently been in the safety deposit box for the last 39 years. Wise investment you ask? I still think so! : )
@@themom3994 brilliant reply madame. however, i'm quite sure that our Gentleman Farmer has worn it in precious videos. ring or not, his videos are an inspiration, especially those who are in lockdown. cheers
I've been powdercoating for a few year at home some observations you will very quickly move away from a domestic oven. That hanging wire is way way too thick and one is best, The new rack was nice but over kill. A sand blasting gun that you can make your own tips for is best. Buy the best coating gun you can afford. The Faraday effect is a thing and a real pain in powdercoating. Yellow and white are the worst colors for not coating thick enough.
Never disappointed when another rainfall projects video comes out
That is without a doubt the most beautiful oven rack I have ever laid eyes on!
Dan Gelbart's trick: Use diamond-coated glass (supermarket barcode-scanner surplus) to make permanent "windows" for the sandblaster
3 videos in a month... let’s hope this is a trend that continues!
It´s winter, so as a farmer he has a lot less to do, as soon as spring starts for real he gonna be busy again.
People keep mentioning powder coating? I applauded when the marvellous rack was finished. Never said this to a man before, but hey, it's 2021 - hey man, great rack!
Never realized this was how powder coating was done. Very cool to see !!
Makes you want the set up lol
I rarely have any idea what your next video will be about, but I'm always thrilled to see it drop. Thanks Justin!

If you want to apply a heavier weight of coating you can preheat the component, apply the coating and then bake as normal.
Great overview and as always great narration on the details. Always enjoy the channel and different things you have going.

powdercoat is one of the best coatings if the part is prepared correctly(clean) and quality materials are used

Verry nice! Love the bright colors!
Love your style of video
Always curious, always trying new stuff. I like that.
How much for the oven rack in stainless. That is awesome.
You could do a coating booth to collect powder and eventually have a unique color (probably brown). I have no experience. Just a thought.

Hi! Congratulations for your channel!! Please, make a video showing how you remove dross from plasma cutting parts.

Got to get set up for this. Can you add a second coat ?
I was going to say you must be thinking how do I get a bigger oven after that. Now I’m going to look into buying one that did look like fun.
Nice video man.
Could you please tell me the colour code and maker of that baby blue?!
Thanks 🙏
Dude you are just awesome, thank you!
Amazing project bro. Great job bro
Great video, how can I get in touch with you directly, I had a question for you about this video Thanks!
Have you come up with a solution on how to hang things without leaving voids in the coverage?
Is there any way to get the paint to cover also at the wire hangers? Thanks for the video.
It looked like there was a ton of overspray. Did you have a vacuum working to keep the air breathable?
Clear is for covering the colors and some colors require it
I'm wanting to try powder coating and home but my question is where you hang things up with those copper hooks does that part get powder coated on the material?
You should get a thicker gauge grounding wire, should help with adhesion
Is the mild orange peel look unavoidable? Could you possibly double coat it or no?
Where can you buy the powder coat system ? Can you put the link for it please thanks
If you have factory part that is powder coated grey, can you put a white coating over it from home, or would I need to remove the factory coating?
Does the powder that doesn't attach to the metal settle onto the floor? Does it build up over time? Just curious about long term effects.
Awesome ,just suscribed!!!
So my question is, regarding the powder coating. Where did you purchase the kit, and how cost effective is it compared to primer and painting?
5:00 what media are you blasting with. My theory is sand has salts in it which leads to the part rusting from within. I'm sick of having parts rust through the powdercoat
I use glass beads as the media. They shatter on impact and blow out the material rather than driving it into the metal.

Powdercoating doest realy mix but you can combine colors. When you look closley at it you can always see the 2 colours
Missed the start saw the CNC cutting of the rack and thought you were making a BBQ/camping grill

Red Green. “If she doesn’t find you handsome, she should at least find you handy.”
This is very fitting because he used both red and green 👍
what company did you go with for the powdercoat system...link it on amazon so i can give you a share of that bezos money

What brand did you buy, Eastwood?
good vid...thanks!

Clamp the ground to the clip next time or close to the part makes it stick better
What home.kit did you get???
Maybe a homemade spray booth for a future project?
Just checked my home, couldn't find a farm barn sized garage with a CNC, Sandblaster with a 200L compressor, and a spare oven.
Is it possible to get mixed colors by adding two or more dry powders to get the "Custom" color you want? This video has everything I have come to expect from a Rainfall Project.

Next you need to build a manual rotary table for the sandblaster.

Only 2 mins in ... but seems like a platform to raise the oven would be ergonomic and make it easier to put stuff in/out/ position.
