    I'd love to learn ASL. I interact with people who are deaf from time to time, though there are not too many that visit my store. On the times they do come, I know just enough ASL to tell them that I am not fluent in ASL, but that I am happy to help them in writing. It has been wonderful to see how happy they get just with written communication. It also makes me sad, because that must mean that very few people try to assist the deaf community. I wish ASL was taught more regularly in schools. Signing seems like it is one of the best ways to communicate all around, as it not only helps the deaf community, but it can also be extremely helpful just to sign with people who do not speak your language, as the gestures correspond to words from all languages.

    Fucking love this guy. You’ve made me take up sign language as a hobby. I work in retail in Ireland and this deaf couple always comes into my store, I’ve wanted to be able to communicate with them for years. It’s so nice to be able to say hello how are you and stuff, such nice people. Pity I still can’t understand them as my sign is way too bad, I feel like I’m letting them down

    They made us learn sign language in high school, I can do the alphabet and thank you and blue lol..... I wish they taught us more, it can be very useful even if your not deaf, like at a concert or live sport event where it's super loud

    I’m an interpreter. Anytime I go out with Deaf friends I always make sure I order/talk to people last. If they find out I’m hearing the other hearing people only talk to me. ALL Deaf people spend most of their time around hearing people without interpreters.

    Looks like the sign for "coffee" is same in ASL and FinSL :-)
    (a gesture that imitates grinding coffee beans with an old-fashioned grinder)

    Hi I’m not deaf but I am learning and brushing up on what my family taught me as a kid . Now as an adult I have a question. I know sign names are something you see they say only deaf people should give out but I’m not taking in person classes and presently have no one irl I’m learning asl for. I’m using the app you recommended How do I get a sign name. I don’t want to make up my own if that’s not how they work but right now I don’t know anyone who could give me one? Just curious and thank you for your content it’s so information and lighthearted at times

    love it. i can 100% agree, just the last part, learn sign language, is a bit of a stretch... i don't think a deaf person would wait until his server learns sign language, so pen amd paper may be preferable.

      The older you are, the more difficult it can be to pick up a new language, and I had a hard enough time with spoken/written English when I was younger. Thankfully, with the ubiquity of phones, it's easy enough to type it out.

    So literally just two weeks ago we had a deaf person start working for us, and I had no idea that saying “hearing impaired” was considered inappropriate these days! Why is that??

    • @diablotry5154
      @diablotry5154 10 місяців тому

      It is not. I don't know where you're getting that from but deaf, hard of hearing, hearing impaired etc are all acceptable terms to use

    . I'm sorry if this question is offensive in any way, But I'm genuinely curious. Why do deaf people sound different from people who can hear. Is it because there is a lack of auditory feedback or something of that sort?

    • @MarleneHen

      Yes. You are correct. I'm a Deaf person who had speech therapy in elementary school from age 4 to age 11. Even though I had good hearing aids, it was still a lot of work. I talk most of the time now due to my family makeup. I'm 46 and even though my husband occasionally helps me spot words I mispronounce, at my request, people STILL sometimes know that I'm Deaf due to my speech. It's a lot of work. And Deaf people are all over the board with what they can hear, whether they want to speak, whether their parents wanted them to speak, etc.
