I'm horrified about your experiences at Lush and Starbucks. I could really relate to this video as I have faced a different kind of discrimination. I'm hearing, but am autistic. I applied for Lush on at least two occasions. On one occasion, I managed to make it through a trial but got feedback about not being loud or enthusiastic enough. The second time round, I asked for feedback by email afterwards. I got radio silence because I mentioned autism. It's interesting that you mentioned that it's better to leave out being deaf on your CV or application form. I've been told to not mention autism too, and a lot of companies reject you when you mention being deaf ot disabled anyway. I'll stop there for now, but can tell you I'm currently working and am very lucky. I've been picking up little bits of BSL but I certainly can't have a conversation in it. When I lost the hearing in one of my ears they told me it wasn't "safe" for me to work there anymore. I said I wasn't going to quit so they made me do all of the tests possible hoping I would fail one so they could boot me. When I passed all of them they slowly reduced my hours, pushed them all to the middle of the night, and pushed me out. 😔 I was only 16 so I didn't feel like I could speak out about it
That really sucks! Fortunately, I can't relate fekm experience but that js a horrible way ti treat somebody! You are a fully- functioning human with FEELINGS and a right to work there! People just don't understand- it's your ear(s) that don't work, not your brain.
Sounds does get overwhelmed with me all the times and it is very hard to listened to supervisor or managers. That why most of deaf people gets laid off
It's so true. Sometimes hearing people called us "lazy" but it's not true... Deaf is harder than hearing and always try do their best if possible. I am lucky to born in Malta because all Deaf people got jobs in Malta the most... but it's not easy anyway.
She got a job in a card shop then left after 1 day because of 3-4 different excuses. she got a job in a pub cleaning dishes, she left after 3 days because she didnt want to be out the back (comparing it to slavery). The best you can say is "hearing people call us "lazy" but its not true *in most cases*
Why discriminate against someone because of something they were born with? It cant be helped so who are you to make someone feel bad about their race, sexuality, disorder etc.

I am profoundly deaf and have both cochlear implants. I exactly know how you would feel of applying jobs. I remember when I applied my jobs and I said “I know I’m not gonna get this job because I’m deaf and nobody won’t understand although I have so much experience”. Luckily I got accepted to work on the retail with my best friend and moved on to the bigger job where I’ve always dreamed of. Now I work in the hospital as HCA for the past two and half years and I absolutely love it. I am going to university to start my nurse training in September. My dream is real and felt much happier than I am listening to my brain telling me I’m deaf. YOU GO GIRL!! ENJOY YOUR NEW JOB 💞
I can so relate it!!!! I faced with discrimination and rejected during I was looking for jobs for almost two years! A lady said to me that I can’t work for 24 hours just because I can’t talk to clients. It made me angry so much but then I became depressed. I wanted to give up and my mum encouraged me to look for jobs. I was volunteering which is very good and it’s great for my CV. I finally got a job with Remark last February this year after volunteering for them for one year. Also I might become a support worker. Unfortunately I can’t start working cos of the coronavirus. My heart goes out to you lovely. I’ve had so much trouble finding, not just work, but appropriate work for me. I’m autistic and hard of hearing, and I really struggle to present who I am and what I’m like to employers because it’s so different every day depending on so many factors. Also I’m transgender which has unfortunately been an issue with lots of the jobs I’ve applied for. It shouldn’t be this way. I finished school in 2011. It’s 2020 now. I’ve had various casual jobs for bits of time, but nothing meaningful or that’s stuck. I’ve mostly volunteered in the last 5 years. I really want to work, but I need a job that is flexible, aware, and willing to work with me to find ways to adapt.
What has, and is, happening to you and the Deaf community is grossly unfair and discriminatory. Being deaf is a part of you, it does not define who you are or your ability to do a job. I admire your persistence and your strength to keep moving forward and not allow anyone to hold you back from contributing to the workforce. You are an amazing, hard working, intelligent person. I remember once I applied to A&W (fast food) and pretty much as soon as I met the manager she was like 'yeah no sorry you're too short to reach anything in the kitchen' which was the weirdest thing I've ever heard at a job. If employers are willing to be bad about that I can't imagine how it feels for someone who is deaf. Also unrelated but I absolutely love the sweater you're wearing in this video :)
I’m 16 and too young to start applying for jobs as a deaf person according to my mother (I’m moderately/severely deaf) but I’ve experienced this kind of discrimination another way. When being a customer. I’ve tried ordering in pen and paper and being called a retard and an idiot (I lip read very bloody well) and it hit me. I’m different. I’m deaf. Then I was in a cycle of self hatred and hated my hearing loss refusing to wear hearing aids and cut off all my hearing friends. I was miserable because I thought I was the token disabled friend that made their cis white straight group look better. That was four years ago it happened when I was 12 YEARS OLD. That is how young I was when I was verbally assaulted by a middle aged whit guy who’s fat mouth ruined my first few years of secondary school. Since then I’ve gained a few friends who have supported me through my hearing worsening and I’m doing better but the avoids and being turned away at the counter still happens. I’ve been contemplating wearing a sunflower lanyard for a while and just OWNING my disability and being a better person that any bigoted person could hope to be
I remember getting rejected for a long time until I put that I am deaf on my application. All of the sudden, I got calls for interviews from everywhere. But for all the wrong reasons. These companies wanted to hire a disabled person to make themselves look good, while treating that person like crap. I was treated horribly like I was lazy and stupid at just about every job I've had. The last time I worked at Walgreens, my boss wasn't too bad as she allowed me some free range around the store in different departments and let me do different jobs. But then she left and a new manager came in. I was the only disabled person working on my shifts and immediately after the new boss came in, I was put on the register and not allowed to do anything. No working in different departments, no helping in the back, nothing. There was supposed to be a rotation on the register between every employee every few hours, but that stopped and I was the only one working the register at all times. When I complained, the boss basically told me that I was not capable of doing anything else in the store. She even told me that I was barely capable of running the register. I was infuriated. Even more so when she and her little assistant manager that came with her, knew that I was deaf, and yet forced me to answer the phone; only to get mad and chew me out because I had no idea what anybody said on the line. It's been a wild ride before I started putting my foot down and looking for jobs that I actually want and will treat me right. So far I am working at an Amazon facility and I have gotten the best treatment I have ever had at any of my jobs. Amazon does not require interviews. You just apply, accept the job offer, do a drug test, and you're in. I love my two bosses and three-four supervisors that are over me or at least know me. They do everything they can to accommodate me and one is even trying to learn sign language so she can communicate with me. Sometimes though, I do run into a supervisor from another area and they refuse to accommodate me, or like today, I had one talk really slowly with simplified words to me like I was stupid. This does piss me off, but these incidents are far and few between. I even just got my vest that says "Deaf/HH Employee" on it which will help me tremendously especially when someone who as not met me before comes up behind me.
Man, 2 years is a long time. I'm glad you finally got a job in the end. We still have a LOT of work to do to fight for accessibility and spread deaf awareness in the business world. Back in 2005, I graduated with a degree in Graphic Design. I did a long job search for 5 months and was rejected a lot. I didn't have deaf on my resume at that time. I almost got a job 2 times but they said "we'd have loved to hire you but we cannot afford to hire anyone else at that time." At the end, I applied for one company and they contacted me for an interview. I didn't request an interpreter because I was desperate and didn't want them to know I was deaf until I was in front of them at the interview. They were actually surprised but was willing to improvise because I already had my foot in the door. We had a projector in the interview room that has a wireless keyboard connected to the projector machine that shows computer screen at the wall. Interviewer and I used text to read on the wall with keyboard back and forth for communication. I showed lady my portfolio. A bit later, the CEO's wife heard about me (gossip) and came rushing over to help interpreter for me because she knew some ASL. I was like "Oh, okay. Sure!" The interview went well. One week later, I got the job. I still have that job for 14 years but right now, I'm sorely in need to move on to my next job because I still have been hitting the ceiling at my current job. No advancements and no further training. I recently found someone who may help me improve my resume and update my portfolio so I can meet my career goal and find a new job, hopefully. We'll see!
I totally relate Jasmine! Thank you for sharing as it will make some deaf people feel like they are not alone. I did not get a job until I was 23. It was a zero hour contract and a good start for me to start somewhere. Prior to that, I did volunteering in 10 different roles. I needed a more stable job with regular income. I somehow got a part time job because my friend was going on maternity leave and I got a contract for 11 months because the manager knew me (I did volunteering work for the organisation). This was luck and I managed to get a new part time job (got the job offer on the last day of my old job). I''ve been employed in the new job since 2018. The barriers I have faced up to now has made me grateful for the jobs I managed to get eventually. As a deaf person, I've learnt that it is challenging to overcome barriers but it has made me adapt to new situations easily in a calm way. I have seen some incredible deaf people work so hard to get where they want to be. I never mentioned my deafness when I applied for my current job. When I got shortlisted, I told the manager that I'm deaf and needed an interpreter for the interview. He agreed. I found out later that they actually wanted more deaf clients to be aware of the service. It worked out well. I helped them to be more deaf aware etc. I now work with hearing and deaf clients.
This is terrible, just pure ableist! Thank you for sharing it was really insightful. If I’m ever in a position to hire in the future I’ll be taking these hints on board. I just hate they didn’t even give you a chance I can’t imagine what that would do to your confidence being rejected like that to your face. You’re amazing I love watching your videos x

This is so disgusting you were treated this way. I am hard of hearing and even without needing an interpreter and I have grown up oral and wear hearing aids I have found that any jobs where I added my disability to my CV I didn’t get an interview, the two Jobs I’ve had I only said I was deaf after getting the job. Even then both places were not deaf aware and I often felt anxious at work.
Thanks for sharing this jazzy, it’s really important for hearing people to learn about challenges deaf people face. I’ve been learning ASL for about 2 years and as I’ve gotten to know more deaf people I’m better able to see discrimination and lack of accessibility. You have so much energy and enthusiasm, it’s crazy that people weren’t giving you a chance (and it’s their loss)! I hope more deaf businesses can grow, they seem amazing for their employees and can help the public learn to be more understanding.

I've heard quite a few say Lush is terrible when coming to hiring disabled people. ☹ I only got a job when I stopped mentioning my disability. 🙄 Sadly my condition now requires way to many adjustments so I'm unlikely to work for a long time. lol I was also told to make sure employers know about Access to Work as they fund most things. lol Being on benefits isn't wrong if you're entitled. Sadly many of us end up stuck as finding a job with a disability that needs adaptations is hard but nothing wrong in having the help.

It’s frustrating and hard especially deaf people but hearing people don’t realise how hard is it for us as deaf people!💖

Jazzy, I'm so sorry to hear that you had that experience while looking for work i think that behaviour is unacceptable and if I was working in a company that did that to you I would quit my job in that moment. I think that all companies should be learning sign language as apart of thier work i feel so awful, saddened and disrespectful when I have a deaf customer come into my workplace and I'm not able to communicate with that person. I am now learning sign language in my own time as my company doesn't think this is important enough to have. I wish you all the best x

I never had a lot of friends I’m in high school some boys just testing me seeing if I understand stand them I always nodded cus I never understand them so one of them tested me and he looks like he’s saying “are you wldjwldjekdn?” I nodded and he laugh saying “hahaha he can’t understand me” and that got me I caught what he’s saying I got really upset.....
I get it that deaf people have a much harder time looking for work, but you shouldn't think that every time you get rejected it's just because you're deaf. I get rejected all the time and I'm not deaf. Sometimes you might get rejected because you're not what they're looking for or you haven't got the right qualifications/experience, or theres other people haver applied that tick more boxes
Ngl it's so disappointing how unsurprising this is, i feel like in retail especially there is already so much discrimination in terms of appearance, race, gender and age that it's just not even shocking to see the horrid experience a deaf person would have trying to look for a job in that (or any) field. I have had interview for jobs I felt perfect for and seen the the first moments that they really aren't going to give me the job because of their internal biases. I also think people forget that deaf customers are a thing, in so many of my jobs I've been the only person who is even willing to attempt to serve or engage with a deaf customer because others are too intimidated by the concept. All in all I just wish that things improve in terms of workplace discrimination❤️

Oh we have the same issues here in America too. It’s sad but thankfully I have many different experiences myself. Right now I am thinking of becoming a CNA for the deaf group group and perhaps this may work for me. Shall wait and see! Sooo happy for you to finally have a job where there are BSL everywhere!
I have been looking for apprenticeships since I left college in 2018 and no luck yet. Apprenticeships might be not suitable enough for deaf people just because we can’t hear?!! That’s rubbish. I am still looking for IT jobs and no luck neither. This gets harder and harder for me to find IT jobs. Does someone know about it??
Oof, retail jobs are the worst for deaf people because it’s about talking with customers all day and making them happy. I had 2 retail jobs and it was overwhelming and frustrating so I had to quit. The pay is not worth the headaches.
The very first job I got I had for a few weeks then I can’t remember why I mentioned it but I said that I was actually deaf and used a cochlear implant to hear and the next day I got a resignation letter. Since I was on probation, I didn’t have a say and they didn’t have to explain why they fired me. Smh
Hiya Jazzy I rarely comment on videos but I just wanted to say I love your channel you and your family are so beautiful and inspiring, I think sign language is a beautiful language my grandmother's father went deaf from childhood measles so she knew how to sign on her fingers so she taught me as a little girl and I loved it, my late best friend did her level one of BSL and I used to love her coming back and teaching us. Ive also used it myself to help with my son as he wasnt talking so it helped us communicate so sign language is apart of my life its something desperately needed in the muslim community where I am from, so people arent left out of talks and events I hope to learn one when my children are a little older. Also what disgusting people, it made me so angry for people to treat you like this you should tag Starbucks and Lush on this video! I really do think it should be introduced into the U.K national curriculum for all children to learn sign language even if its just the basics so we can break this barrier. My father’s had a hard time trying to get a job for a long time so it’s been a real struggle for our family to scrape by. I wish more people cared enough to actually give fair opportunities for deaf people, but to the big corporate CEOs of the world, It’s probably not a popular thing that would financially benefit them. I’m sorry to see that you’ve been struggling the same way, but I still enjoyed hearing your story. Also, getting off-topic, I really need to learn the new sign words for things because I’m more used to PSE the way my mom and my dad taught me. It’s very fascinating!
14:50 That should be “four times!” Seriously, that’s how I feel being autistic working. I was even driven out of the best job I ever had because a fuckhead of a manager came in and made my life hell. Guess what, he left after I did AND the dress code was loosened to allow t-shirts and jeans. Of course. I’ve been trying to recover since. At least being furloughed from my current job got me unemployment benefits
I personally feel that the Deaf Community is unrecognized and buried in the UA-cam Community. There should be categories on award shows for you all, or award shows for the Deaf. I had a terrible experience at Starbucks too! My mom was the one that answered the phone and spoke to the manager when she called for an interview as I am also deaf and can’t hear on the phone. Once my mom told her I can’t hear on the phone, I’m deaf, she no longer wanted to interview me. My mom convinced her to interview me and give me a chance and so she did interview me but I think she had already made up her mind prior to the interview so that really made me lose hope for finding a job as I had never had one before at the time. Discrimination sucks. Businesses need to do better!
I can't fully understand ASL, BSL, or PSE. But I am working on learning. However, I find that even without me understanding the words, Jazzy still puts out a story. I can see and feel her emoemotions.
I use ASL not BSL, but it's nice to see you on videos especially about discrimination and to know there are others hard to find jobs breaks my heart. I still don't understand why Starbucks won't hire the deaf when they say they hire them. I hated being on any disability. I wanted my independence to have a career and not looked at being Lazy. Why is it so hard to find a job when the community keeps displaying that we can do anything. I think if they knew they would get tax breaks and benefits for hiring the deaf, they would make it a bigger opportunity to hire, but at the same time that is wrong. There are those that are self motivated and eager to work. You are absolutely right give us a chance. We should have the equal rights without discimination, without feeling lost in this world. Just tell them to get lost cause they don't know what in the wold they are talking about being deaf does not define you, deafness is a part of you, you have talent that helps you communicate with people if that does make them fall in love with you Jazzy I don't know what will, I can definitely say that I love your talent and I would never reject someone like you I would hire you any day in fact if I had a business I make it that majority of my employees were deaf and I would hire one interpreter so that we could all understand each other
We as deaf people have the most of social skills. Who make the most of our effort to communicate with the hearing society. Not only they are discriminating, but also are not educated and do not understand the barriers they place up against the disabled, any disabled person. In my life long experience, it an impression of their effort that they cannot admit it not worth their time.
Hello, I am curtis and I been through 6 years college but two different places like 3 years college in Brighton and 3 years college in tonbridge kent. So, I been looking for jobs nearly 7 months also been before 6 times interview and most say no that it.

Been discrimination by job centre today! Saying I'm likes you when we are not likes each other at all. Every deaf got different EQ sounds adjustments for the hearing aids also depend on what theirs knowledges is for that jobs! In the most of the jobs deaf people's are very vulnerable due to health and safety working with machine or dangerous environment . That because the laws is ignorant
Unfortunately hearing people don’t know what they think or how they look at deaf people, they think that they are not able to do anything, sad reality what happened is that they lack the empathy to meet deaf people who are able to do anything whether they are engineers, doctors, secretaries, etc. I wanted to say stop the discrimination!
i am not deaf but have mobility issues and chronic pain as well as tourette's and luckily my tourette's isn't very noticeable since its' mostly motor. but i can't just stand up or barely move for a long time, i can sit down and do things, or if i am moving quickly like a fast paced moving job i can do. but what is so annoying is that even if i were to apply to be a cashier i would be allowed to have a stool, legally i should be allowed but it's not like employers follow the law *eyeroll* i could very easily do the job of a cashier at any place if i was able to sit down. but no not going to happen. so i'm just trying to make my own job.
Honestly it’s good that you didn’t get hired at Starbucks. I’m hearing but have issues focusing on what people are saying sometimes, so my brain just puts the pieces together after someone speaks and sometimes it’s wrong. The amount of times I heard “toffee nut” instead of “chestnut” or misheard what kind of milk they wanted.... well, I’ve gotten coffee thrown at me in the early morning shift before. People can be brutal, especially entitled expensive coffee people. Also, when working at Starbucks you don’t really get to chose whether you’re making the coffees, cleaning, or on the register (at my location at least). There should be a “barista only” position, or “cashier only” for people who can’t easily do both.
It breaks my heart when people discriminate against other people without making any attempt at understanding just how difficult it is, just please don’t stop being your awesome inspirational self 🙏💙
Great video! May I just ask (I’m sorry if this sounds like a daft question, I’m a Level 1 BSL learner) - when reading the English captions it seems that a lot of your words/sentences match perfectly to the ‘spoken English’ sentence structure, I suppose like SSE. But then some of the signs and captions don’t match up, like traditional BSL sentence structure. Just curious as to why that might be? Are you signing some parts as SSE, or do the captions just happen to match the BSL structure? Thank you!
Hey! I might be wrong as I am a BSL and deaf individual. She is signing mostly BSL and SSE in some ways. I presume that she is using SSE captions to make more sense rather than using BSL captions as it flows more confusing. So, for example, if she signed completely BSL, the captions would be back to front and not make sense. I think shes using the captions to make more sense for hearing viewers where the can pick up possibly signs then flow within SSE/BSL. She should really put the captions in BSL structure but again would be a lot more confusing. She is using SSE which makes it the video more 'accessible' for hearing people. Hope that makes sense :)
I think she might keep switching a little between BSL and SSE - I noticed this too, I think she’s maybe very kindly trying to make it more accessible to hearing people, but of course being a BSL user, often falls back into using the BSL structure. I do sometimes wonder who does the captions though, if she does them herself she’s really good at writing using English structure (which can be really difficult for some BSL users, they will often still write in BSL structure) By the way, I’m deaf (I’m a lip reader) but learning BSL too (level 2)
This actually made me cry. I used to work with a deaf woman, we communicated through the notes app and she taught me some simple sign language. It's not that hard.

When I lost the hearing in one of my ears they told me it wasn't "safe" for me to work there anymore. I said I wasn't going to quit so they made me do all of the tests possible hoping I would fail one so they could boot me. When I passed all of them they slowly reduced my hours, pushed them all to the middle of the night, and pushed me out. 😔
I was only 16 so I didn't feel like I could speak out about it

I am lucky to born in Malta because all Deaf people got jobs in Malta the most... but it's not easy anyway.
She got a job in a card shop then left after 1 day because of 3-4 different excuses.
she got a job in a pub cleaning dishes, she left after 3 days because she didnt want to be out the back (comparing it to slavery).

I am profoundly deaf and have both cochlear implants. I exactly know how you would feel of applying jobs. I remember when I applied my jobs and I said “I know I’m not gonna get this job because I’m deaf and nobody won’t understand although I have so much experience”. Luckily I got accepted to work on the retail with my best friend and moved on to the bigger job where I’ve always dreamed of. Now I work in the hospital as HCA for the past two and half years and I absolutely love it. I am going to university to start my nurse training in September. My dream is real and felt much happier than I am listening to my brain telling me I’m deaf. YOU GO GIRL!! ENJOY YOUR NEW JOB 💞
I can so relate it!!!! I faced with discrimination and rejected during I was looking for jobs for almost two years! A lady said to me that I can’t work for 24 hours just because I can’t talk to clients. It made me angry so much but then I became depressed. I wanted to give up and my mum encouraged me to look for jobs. I was volunteering which is very good and it’s great for my CV. I finally got a job with Remark last February this year after volunteering for them for one year. Also I might become a support worker. Unfortunately I can’t start working cos of the coronavirus. I hope I’ll work again!

My heart goes out to you lovely. I’ve had so much trouble finding, not just work, but appropriate work for me. I’m autistic and hard of hearing, and I really struggle to present who I am and what I’m like to employers because it’s so different every day depending on so many factors. Also I’m transgender which has unfortunately been an issue with lots of the jobs I’ve applied for. It shouldn’t be this way. I finished school in 2011. It’s 2020 now. I’ve had various casual jobs for bits of time, but nothing meaningful or that’s stuck. I’ve mostly volunteered in the last 5 years. I really want to work, but I need a job that is flexible, aware, and willing to work with me to find ways to adapt.
What has, and is, happening to you and the Deaf community is grossly unfair and discriminatory. Being deaf is a part of you, it does not define who you are or your ability to do a job. I admire your persistence and your strength to keep moving forward and not allow anyone to hold you back from contributing to the workforce. You are an amazing, hard working, intelligent person. You will be where you are meant to be, sooner than later.

I remember once I applied to A&W (fast food) and pretty much as soon as I met the manager she was like 'yeah no sorry you're too short to reach anything in the kitchen' which was the weirdest thing I've ever heard at a job. If employers are willing to be bad about that I can't imagine how it feels for someone who is deaf. Also unrelated but I absolutely love the sweater you're wearing in this video :)

I’m 16 and too young to start applying for jobs as a deaf person according to my mother (I’m moderately/severely deaf) but I’ve experienced this kind of discrimination another way. When being a customer. I’ve tried ordering in pen and paper and being called a retard and an idiot (I lip read very bloody well) and it hit me. I’m different. I’m deaf. Then I was in a cycle of self hatred and hated my hearing loss refusing to wear hearing aids and cut off all my hearing friends. I was miserable because I thought I was the token disabled friend that made their cis white straight group look better. That was four years ago it happened when I was 12 YEARS OLD. That is how young I was when I was verbally assaulted by a middle aged whit guy who’s fat mouth ruined my first few years of secondary school. Since then I’ve gained a few friends who have supported me through my hearing worsening and I’m doing better but the avoids and being turned away at the counter still happens. I’ve been contemplating wearing a sunflower lanyard for a while and just OWNING my disability and being a better person that any bigoted person could hope to be

I remember getting rejected for a long time until I put that I am deaf on my application. All of the sudden, I got calls for interviews from everywhere. But for all the wrong reasons. These companies wanted to hire a disabled person to make themselves look good, while treating that person like crap. I was treated horribly like I was lazy and stupid at just about every job I've had. The last time I worked at Walgreens, my boss wasn't too bad as she allowed me some free range around the store in different departments and let me do different jobs. But then she left and a new manager came in. I was the only disabled person working on my shifts and immediately after the new boss came in, I was put on the register and not allowed to do anything. No working in different departments, no helping in the back, nothing. There was supposed to be a rotation on the register between every employee every few hours, but that stopped and I was the only one working the register at all times. When I complained, the boss basically told me that I was not capable of doing anything else in the store. She even told me that I was barely capable of running the register. I was infuriated. Even more so when she and her little assistant manager that came with her, knew that I was deaf, and yet forced me to answer the phone; only to get mad and chew me out because I had no idea what anybody said on the line.
It's been a wild ride before I started putting my foot down and looking for jobs that I actually want and will treat me right. So far I am working at an Amazon facility and I have gotten the best treatment I have ever had at any of my jobs. Amazon does not require interviews. You just apply, accept the job offer, do a drug test, and you're in. I love my two bosses and three-four supervisors that are over me or at least know me. They do everything they can to accommodate me and one is even trying to learn sign language so she can communicate with me. Sometimes though, I do run into a supervisor from another area and they refuse to accommodate me, or like today, I had one talk really slowly with simplified words to me like I was stupid. This does piss me off, but these incidents are far and few between. I even just got my vest that says "Deaf/HH Employee" on it which will help me tremendously especially when someone who as not met me before comes up behind me.
Man, 2 years is a long time. I'm glad you finally got a job in the end. We still have a LOT of work to do to fight for accessibility and spread deaf awareness in the business world. Back in 2005, I graduated with a degree in Graphic Design. I did a long job search for 5 months and was rejected a lot. I didn't have deaf on my resume at that time. I almost got a job 2 times but they said "we'd have loved to hire you but we cannot afford to hire anyone else at that time." At the end, I applied for one company and they contacted me for an interview. I didn't request an interpreter because I was desperate and didn't want them to know I was deaf until I was in front of them at the interview. They were actually surprised but was willing to improvise because I already had my foot in the door. We had a projector in the interview room that has a wireless keyboard connected to the projector machine that shows computer screen at the wall. Interviewer and I used text to read on the wall with keyboard back and forth for communication. I showed lady my portfolio. A bit later, the CEO's wife heard about me (gossip) and came rushing over to help interpreter for me because she knew some ASL. I was like "Oh, okay. Sure!" The interview went well. One week later, I got the job. I still have that job for 14 years but right now, I'm sorely in need to move on to my next job because I still have been hitting the ceiling at my current job. No advancements and no further training. I recently found someone who may help me improve my resume and update my portfolio so I can meet my career goal and find a new job, hopefully. We'll see!
I totally relate Jasmine! Thank you for sharing as it will make some deaf people feel like they are not alone. I did not get a job until I was 23. It was a zero hour contract and a good start for me to start somewhere. Prior to that, I did volunteering in 10 different roles. I needed a more stable job with regular income. I somehow got a part time job because my friend was going on maternity leave and I got a contract for 11 months because the manager knew me (I did volunteering work for the organisation). This was luck and I managed to get a new part time job (got the job offer on the last day of my old job). I''ve been employed in the new job since 2018. The barriers I have faced up to now has made me grateful for the jobs I managed to get eventually. As a deaf person, I've learnt that it is challenging to overcome barriers but it has made me adapt to new situations easily in a calm way. I have seen some incredible deaf people work so hard to get where they want to be.
I never mentioned my deafness when I applied for my current job. When I got shortlisted, I told the manager that I'm deaf and needed an interpreter for the interview. He agreed. I found out later that they actually wanted more deaf clients to be aware of the service. It worked out well. I helped them to be more deaf aware etc. I now work with hearing and deaf clients.
This is terrible, just pure ableist! Thank you for sharing it was really insightful. If I’m ever in a position to hire in the future I’ll be taking these hints on board. I just hate they didn’t even give you a chance I can’t imagine what that would do to your confidence being rejected like that to your face. You’re amazing I love watching your videos x

This is so disgusting you were treated this way. I am hard of hearing and even without needing an interpreter and I have grown up oral and wear hearing aids I have found that any jobs where I added my disability to my CV I didn’t get an interview, the two Jobs I’ve had I only said I was deaf after getting the job. Even then both places were not deaf aware and I often felt anxious at work.
Thanks for sharing this jazzy, it’s really important for hearing people to learn about challenges deaf people face. I’ve been learning ASL for about 2 years and as I’ve gotten to know more deaf people I’m better able to see discrimination and lack of accessibility. You have so much energy and enthusiasm, it’s crazy that people weren’t giving you a chance (and it’s their loss)! I hope more deaf businesses can grow, they seem amazing for their employees and can help the public learn to be more understanding.

I only got a job when I stopped mentioning my disability. 🙄 Sadly my condition now requires way to many adjustments so I'm unlikely to work for a long time. lol
I was also told to make sure employers know about Access to Work as they fund most things. lol
Being on benefits isn't wrong if you're entitled. Sadly many of us end up stuck as finding a job with a disability that needs adaptations is hard but nothing wrong in having the help.

Jazzy, I'm so sorry to hear that you had that experience while looking for work i think that behaviour is unacceptable and if I was working in a company that did that to you I would quit my job in that moment. I think that all companies should be learning sign language as apart of thier work i feel so awful, saddened and disrespectful when I have a deaf customer come into my workplace and I'm not able to communicate with that person. I am now learning sign language in my own time as my company doesn't think this is important enough to have. I wish you all the best x

I never had a lot of friends I’m in high school some boys just testing me seeing if I understand stand them I always nodded cus I never understand them so one of them tested me and he looks like he’s saying “are you wldjwldjekdn?” I nodded and he laugh saying “hahaha he can’t understand me” and that got me I caught what he’s saying I got really upset.....

I get it that deaf people have a much harder time looking for work, but you shouldn't think that every time you get rejected it's just because you're deaf. I get rejected all the time and I'm not deaf. Sometimes you might get rejected because you're not what they're looking for or you haven't got the right qualifications/experience, or theres other people haver applied that tick more boxes

Ngl it's so disappointing how unsurprising this is, i feel like in retail especially there is already so much discrimination in terms of appearance, race, gender and age that it's just not even shocking to see the horrid experience a deaf person would have trying to look for a job in that (or any) field. I have had interview for jobs I felt perfect for and seen the the first moments that they really aren't going to give me the job because of their internal biases. I also think people forget that deaf customers are a thing, in so many of my jobs I've been the only person who is even willing to attempt to serve or engage with a deaf customer because others are too intimidated by the concept. All in all I just wish that things improve in terms of workplace discrimination❤️

Oh we have the same issues here in America too. It’s sad but thankfully I have many different experiences myself. Right now I am thinking of becoming a CNA for the deaf group group and perhaps this may work for me. Shall wait and see! Sooo happy for you to finally have a job where there are BSL everywhere!
I have been looking for apprenticeships since I left college in 2018 and no luck yet. Apprenticeships might be not suitable enough for deaf people just because we can’t hear?!! That’s rubbish. I am still looking for IT jobs and no luck neither. This gets harder and harder for me to find IT jobs. Does someone know about it??
Oof, retail jobs are the worst for deaf people because it’s about talking with customers all day and making them happy. I had 2 retail jobs and it was overwhelming and frustrating so I had to quit. The pay is not worth the headaches.
The very first job I got I had for a few weeks then I can’t remember why I mentioned it but I said that I was actually deaf and used a cochlear implant to hear and the next day I got a resignation letter. Since I was on probation, I didn’t have a say and they didn’t have to explain why they fired me. Smh
Hiya Jazzy I rarely comment on videos but I just wanted to say I love your channel you and your family are so beautiful and inspiring, I think sign language is a beautiful language my grandmother's father went deaf from childhood measles so she knew how to sign on her fingers so she taught me as a little girl and I loved it, my late best friend did her level one of BSL and I used to love her coming back and teaching us.
Ive also used it myself to help with my son as he wasnt talking so it helped us communicate so sign language is apart of my life
its something desperately needed in the muslim community where I am from, so people arent left out of talks and events I hope to learn one when my children are a little older.
Also what disgusting people, it made me so angry for people to treat you like this you should tag Starbucks and Lush on this video!
I really do think it should be introduced into the U.K national curriculum for all children to learn sign language even if its just the basics so we can break this barrier.

My father’s had a hard time trying to get a job for a long time so it’s been a real struggle for our family to scrape by. I wish more people cared enough to actually give fair opportunities for deaf people, but to the big corporate CEOs of the world, It’s probably not a popular thing that would financially benefit them.

Guess what, he left after I did AND the dress code was loosened to allow t-shirts and jeans. Of course. I’ve been trying to recover since. At least being furloughed from my current job got me unemployment benefits
Volunteering is very rewarding so it’s absolutely worth it. I encourage people to do it.
I personally feel that the Deaf Community is unrecognized and buried in the UA-cam Community. There should be categories on award shows for you all, or award shows for the Deaf. I had a terrible experience at Starbucks too! My mom was the one that answered the phone and spoke to the manager when she called for an interview as I am also deaf and can’t hear on the phone. Once my mom told her I can’t hear on the phone, I’m deaf, she no longer wanted to interview me. My mom convinced her to interview me and give me a chance and so she did interview me but I think she had already made up her mind prior to the interview so that really made me lose hope for finding a job as I had never had one before at the time. Discrimination sucks. Businesses need to do better!

I can't fully understand ASL, BSL, or PSE. But I am working on learning. However, I find that even without me understanding the words, Jazzy still puts out a story. I can see and feel her emoemotions.

I use ASL not BSL, but it's nice to see you on videos especially about discrimination and to know there are others hard to find jobs breaks my heart. I still don't understand why Starbucks won't hire the deaf when they say they hire them. I hated being on any disability. I wanted my independence to have a career and not looked at being Lazy. Why is it so hard to find a job when the community keeps displaying that we can do anything. I think if they knew they would get tax breaks and benefits for hiring the deaf, they would make it a bigger opportunity to hire, but at the same time that is wrong. There are those that are self motivated and eager to work. You are absolutely right give us a chance. We should have the equal rights without discimination, without feeling lost in this world. We as deaf people have the most of social skills. Who make the most of our effort to communicate with the hearing society. Not only they are discriminating, but also are not educated and do not understand the barriers they place up against the disabled, any disabled person. In my life long experience, it an impression of their effort that they cannot admit it not worth their time.

So, I been looking for jobs nearly 7 months also been before 6 times interview and most say no that it.

Been discrimination by job centre today! Saying I'm likes you when we are not likes each other at all. Every deaf got different EQ sounds adjustments for the hearing aids also depend on what theirs knowledges is for that jobs! In the most of the jobs deaf people's are very vulnerable due to health and safety working with machine or dangerous environment . That because the laws is ignorant

Unfortunately hearing people don’t know what they think or how they look at deaf people, they think that they are not able to do anything, sad reality what happened is that they lack the empathy to meet deaf people who are able to do anything whether they are engineers, doctors, secretaries, etc. I wanted to say stop the discrimination!
i am not deaf but have mobility issues and chronic pain as well as tourette's and luckily my tourette's isn't very noticeable since its' mostly motor. but i can't just stand up or barely move for a long time, i can sit down and do things, or if i am moving quickly like a fast paced moving job i can do. but what is so annoying is that even if i were to apply to be a cashier i would be allowed to have a stool, legally i should be allowed but it's not like employers follow the law *eyeroll* i could very easily do the job of a cashier at any place if i was able to sit down. but no not going to happen. so i'm just trying to make my own job.

Honestly it’s good that you didn’t get hired at Starbucks. I’m hearing but have issues focusing on what people are saying sometimes, so my brain just puts the pieces together after someone speaks and sometimes it’s wrong. The amount of times I heard “toffee nut” instead of “chestnut” or misheard what kind of milk they wanted.... well, I’ve gotten coffee thrown at me in the early morning shift before. People can be brutal, especially entitled expensive coffee people. Also, when working at Starbucks you don’t really get to chose whether you’re making the coffees, cleaning, or on the register (at my location at least). There should be a “barista only” position, or “cashier only” for people who can’t easily do both.

Great video! May I just ask (I’m sorry if this sounds like a daft question, I’m a Level 1 BSL learner) - when reading the English captions it seems that a lot of your words/sentences match perfectly to the ‘spoken English’ sentence structure, I suppose like SSE. But then some of the signs and captions don’t match up, like traditional BSL sentence structure.
Just curious as to why that might be? Are you signing some parts as SSE, or do the captions just happen to match the BSL structure?

I might be wrong as I am a BSL and deaf individual. She is signing mostly BSL and SSE in some ways. I presume that she is using SSE captions to make more sense rather than using BSL captions as it flows more confusing. So, for example, if she signed completely BSL, the captions would be back to front and not make sense.
I think shes using the captions to make more sense for hearing viewers where the can pick up possibly signs then flow within SSE/BSL.
She should really put the captions in BSL structure but again would be a lot more confusing. She is using SSE which makes it the video more 'accessible' for hearing people.

I think she might keep switching a little between BSL and SSE - I noticed this too, I think she’s maybe very kindly trying to make it more accessible to hearing people, but of course being a BSL user, often falls back into using the BSL structure.
I do sometimes wonder who does the captions though, if she does them herself she’s really good at writing using English structure (which can be really difficult for some BSL users, they will often still write in BSL structure)
By the way, I’m deaf (I’m a lip reader) but learning BSL too (level 2)
I’m deaf as well but mostly read captions coz I’m not bsl user. Auslan is a bit similar to bsl
This actually made me cry. I used to work with a deaf woman, we communicated through the notes app and she taught me some simple sign language. It's not that hard.
