I’m a few weeks into my first ASL class and I’m absolutely blown away by how much there is to learn. Not just the signs, but which expression goes with a sign, nodding or shaking your head, and how easy it is to get so confused and accidentally curse. Today in class i couldn’t stop laughing because I literally could not coordinate shaking my head no with a verb and it reminded me of when you’re a kid and try to rub your stomach with one hand and pat your head with the other...our teacher couldn’t stop laughing either. I think i looked like i was having a stroke.

Captions or subtitles are useful for anyone who just can't hear the video clearly. In a loud environment, in a need-to-be-quiet environment, with bad headphones, whatever. The uploader and the audience usually have different hardwares which play the "same" audio with different fidelities, regardless of their hearing abilities.

    • @ghyslainabel
      @ghyslainabel 4 роки тому +13

@@rikkipoynter I hate pointing that out but... for many people, UA-cam is a business. That means that if, after captioning for a couple of months, the incomes did not increase enough to pay the captions, captioning is not worth it.
However (in the United States at least), adding Spanish captions may increase more the audience than English captions. An actuary could tell which audience can bring the most revenues: the general Latino population, or the underemployed English deaf and hard-of-hearing. This is the American hyper-capitalism for you.

Hey Chrissy - Three year ASL student here, taught by a profoundly deaf professor. I think your video is spot on and I'm so glad to have stumbled onto your channel. Subscribed!! I took ASL instead of another language because my biggest fear (at the time) was having a child who was deaf. I turned out pregnant in my third year and my wonderful, amazing professor had, by then, showed me that deafness wasn't something to be afraid about. Ironically, my child was born with a rare genetic disorder and tumors on the brain, and a MASSIVE speech delay. He's seven now and still can barely speak a full sentence. We've used sign language with him since the delay presented itself - for better or for worse, not sure, but at least I knew when he needed Mommy.

I just stumbled across both parts of this series and watched them. Before the pandemic, I used to work at a bar in Northeast DC that was blocks away from Gallaudet University and have wanted to pursue ASL more ever since. As a hearing person trying to learn, I felt like I was better able to communicate with Deaf/HoH patrons after I learned how to sign the phrases "Please be patient, I am still learning how to sign" and "sorry, can you please slow down?" when the notepad or my HoH cook weren't around. I know that not everyone will be as kind as my favorite patron, who took the time to teach me how to sign those phrases during a slow day at my request, but that act of kindness alone helped me understand how important it was for hearing people to be able to interact with the community. Thank you so much for breaking it down further and helping me understand more about what to look out for when starting to learn more about ASL online

I'm HOH and going deaf, so I started learning ASL on UA-cam. When my Grandson was born I started signing to him and he responded with a lot of enthusiasm. It soon became obvious he had a problem with his ears, which was able to be corrected with surgery.

I could literally stare into those eyes for eons. My captions did a weird vocal interpretation at first, so I listened once; then watched again just reading. Then watched thrice more, just following the signs. 👀🎨📚

This is perfect! I'm going to share it with friends on Pinterest. I grew up Hard of Hearing but when I reached my 30s my hearing ability was declining so much I had to adapt. It wasn't easy but I did it. I'm 71 now. I have used different labels. With the non-Deaf it can be so hard to get them to understand. I often refer to myself now as Deafish because I relate to nearly all the experiences. ↘️
UA-cam has been making access harder. Someone told me that the person posting the video decides whether to allow auto-generated captions. So, when they're not on for videos I want to see, I tell them.

I've found that many of my favorite channels have exceptional captions. Critical role, primitive technology, etc. I frequently need to watch without sound so I don't bother my wife so I pretty much know there are channels I can't watch because they don't put up proper captions.

Your advice at 1:28 made me think of that final scene in _Sound of Metal._ That scene alone will keep me from _ever_ expecting a deaf person to use a cochlear implant or hearing aid. In addition to showing how overwhelming it can be to hear _every_ sound in the environment, it also helped me to really understand _that_ sound is _not the same_ as what Hearing People hear.

Basically, supporting d/Deaf culture and community by being aware of and contributing to the success of those within it. I, too, am HoH (since birth) and sometimes being raised and immersed within the mainsteam it feels like the culture can be elusive. My unsolicited advice is to remain patient and persistent. I enjoyed both part one and part two. My church just combined with a deaf church and it is sometimes a little confusing trying to not only follow the signing during the service but then to interact with the deaf members of the church. It is especially hard with the mask mandate as there are several who read lips but with the masks it's difficult. So learning some do's and don't is a good thing.

Most of those things apply to ANY disabled person.
    Not JUST deaf
I have a movement disability. It's hard for me to walk, and outside my small house I usually use two canes.
I hear a lot of the same shit.
My disability will get progressively worse as well.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't always see writing as a viable alternative.
In my early years I moved around a lot.
Went to 4 elementary schools in 5 buildings in 4 states in 6 years. So I had to catch a lot of the writing sort of on my own
I have dropped the cursive entirely
I have often been told "Your handwriting could stop a moose at 40 paces!"
    Never actually tried it!
In no hurry to do so!!!
I try to do as much writing on the computer and as little on paper as feasible

Thank you so much for these videos. I use ASL periodically for my ADD. I realized after picking up more and more words that, in times of becoming overwhelmed, I reached for ASL first to express myself rather than trying to put together words (I'm not sure why, but other people with ADD/ADHD have expressed the same sentiment that they prefer using ASL when it becomes seemingly difficult to talk). While I'm nowhere near conversational (I tend to use it to express opinions on what I want/don't want or ask for simple things) I adore it more and more each time I use it, especially just learning all the nuances to this and any language. I know I'm a visitor into this community and I don't ever want to cause issues, though I know my reasons are a little more selfish than most (I do have a hard of hearing brother-in-law but he's able to use lip reading to supplement what he doesn't hear, so ASL or other forms of non-verbal communication has never been required. I did, accidentally, once forget while I was eating. I covered my mouth while I said something because I was always told to do so with food in your mouth, and it took both of us a second to realize what had happened because, to him, I hadn't said anything, so in both of our minds we were just staring at each other waiting for the other to respond). Anyway, all this is to say that I'm really appreciative to have tools under my belt to stay respectful in any instance of interacting with the deaf community.

Would I be incorrect in thinking, for example, that while a hearing American and Brit could understand one another, a deaf American and Brit would not be able to converse as easily in their respective sign languages?

Anyways, i'm curious, feel free not to awnser if this is dumb or insensitive. in the signing community, say your at a party or a get together, convention, whatever where their are a decent ammount of people signing or maybe just people signing you dont even know. is it rude to watch what they are signing from a distance. also should you let them know that you know signs language upfront so they dont say anything embarrassing or sensitive in nature, they may think they are having a private conversation. also the hearing just whisper if they want to tell a secret. do the deaf just block their signs with one hand and finger spell a secret. like i said these are probally dumb to ask, i'm just ignorant to how things work and it interest me.

Love your videos! This might be a stupid question, but when you CC something, if there is music, are you supposed to subtitle the lyrics as well?

    • @MultiMarvelGeek
      @MultiMarvelGeek 4 роки тому +6

Yes, please. Watching music videos is such a pain when you have to read the comments or description for lyrics. Hate it when movies have all the dialogue subtitled and then just stop at sung parts of the films.

Hi! I just recently starting taking free online classes for ASL. I know I have A LOT more to learn so these videos are super helpful! Just for clarification, is it rude to ask what method of communication someone deaf or hard of hearing uses? Thanks for these vids they’re super helpful for beginners like me!

I just commented this on the old video but I want to make sure I get an answer...I was told to simcom (maybe at first) since you don’t know how much they can hear. Would that be a way of letting the person decide?

like you said be4 some ppl aren't going to like you. but when i was having a hard time signing with someone i just met i am slow as i have to spell everything out .lol so i figured ah she can read it would just be faster to write it down. she got upset and said...i'm not a baby why do we have to right? I explained its just faster and i said i think me being slow might be annoying to you?... she said no this conversation is you can't spell of sign...i spelled one word wrong? "converstation" . so did i do something wrong? maybe jumping to writing after like 3 sentences?

Question! What's the best way to get the attention of someone who is deaf who isn't looking at you? (Like in your example, if I was going to turn out the lights but a deaf friend wasn't looking my direction.) It seems silly to shout out and more startling to suddenly touch them or rudely wave in their face or something.

I went through my list of content creators I'm subscribed to thinking, "I'm going to unsub from any bigger channels who don't have captions or who only have auto generated captions." Then I realized that all but maybe 3 (SHOUT OUT TO ANNE REARDON FROM HOW TO COOK THAT FOR HAVING CAPTIONS THAT ARE HUMAN MADE!) only had auto generated captions or none at all... I was very disappointed. The auto generated captions are slow and unreliable. It's the same technology as TTS, which is notoriously bad. Content creators need to do better.

I have a question. Is it better to just write things out or other comm methods if you only have limited sign experience? Like would that be more frustrating for the deaf/hoh person to commminicate with someone slow /not know a-lot of signs?

Maybe this is just me, but I find that some text doesn't stay on the screen for long enough for me to read it completely.
I'm not sure I watched part one. If I haven't, I will shortly.

The only one that I feel is a bit alienating is the don't stare one, I personally watch to try and understand and if anyone's learning asl they may be having a hard time assigning meaning to what's being said I myself try to watch how and what signs are being used so I don't misspeak if I ever need to use asl but don't stare feels a bit far reaching because if someones curious then acting as if it's something people shouldn't do is just rude in return.

i have a question if i may any advice to someone who is losing their hearing ? on how to adapt and overcome communications barriers and good resources for learning ASL for the general public. I'm losing my hearing and sadly the only thing ive gotten thus far in my local community is here is a copy of your hearing results and you need hearing aids (which i CANT afford at the moment) so ANY advice you can give or even suggest a direction would be amazing because honestly im totally lost.

Re 2:38 - do you have a Patreon? Because I'd like to sign up for it, if you do. Couldn't find one in the description here or in your latest video (The Village), but... if you've got one, and/or ever decide to create one, please drop a reply here, and... hopefully I'll see it, and surely I'll sign up. :)
Either way, kudos and thanks for this channel!

Too many people lack basic communication skills even when able to hear and speak clearly.
Listen to what they say if you want to understand. Speak to them in their own language if you want to be understood.
New languages are always fascinating. But random people using the language aren't obligated to teach every stranger they meet.

if a deaf person sees this, id like to ask question, to help me be more "polite" and im not sure if its appropriate. okay here goes. is it rude to not make eye contact when you sign? i tend to focus on peoples hands even when speaking vocally because i mimic hand behaviors. i just don't want to be rude when i talk to some who is deaf. i actually really like signing, because if give me something to do with my hands. i really like your hair and chocker btw :)

Kind of worried to invite my friends and family online to share my asl journey with me after seeing how I may lose respect online for sharing (teaching). I dont beg for help but it seems now i shouldnt ask for help in public so much. Doesnt seem to be alot of respect if you learn online as opposed to a university. I watch for hand movements and now found out it may be mistaken for starring. Im becoming discouraged to seek help in the deaf commuinty. Good content tho.
