I never signed in my life... I think I learned how to sign "Coronavirus", "need", "hospital" and "mask" today. I don't know for how long I will remember them but hopefully for a long long while.
My mom is deaf and doesn’t know sign language so she relies solely on lip reading which is obviously very difficult during this time. It’s cool to see another perspective from a deaf individual on how to navigate such limited interaction that they’re normally used to having in order to communicate.
I know ASL and am really good at reading lips and was able to have right sided cochlear implant surgery on September 6, 2019 and hoping soon to know about having left sided cochlear implant surgery.
Amy Westbeld how did the implant impact you initially? My mom has looked into it but she’s been deaf all her life so I think it’s quite daunting to think about how life changing that would be to her because she only knows how to function as a deaf woman.
In the early 1990s, when I was learning to interpret, I was taught that 2 “i”s together meant “talk to yourself.” It is funny to me that THAT particular sign helped make the sign for quarantine. 🤣 Thanks for the video!

About the accessible news, here in the Netherlands they have an interpreter who's standing behind the prime minister during important speeches, which I think is really good, because not only can deaf people understand but also the interest in Dutch sign language has increased sooooo much! Like the registers for next year's signing classes have already doubled
That’s really cool! I was going to chime in and say that I’ve seen on TV that a major Texas city near me has been using interpreters for speeches too which is awesome. Watching someone interpret public announcements like that with all the legal vocab can be hard for me to understand haha but I like trying to watch. Great to hear that people have become more interested!
Here in the US the camera people aren't really Intune and often crop out the interpreter and only focus on the person speaking. It is awful, but I have seen it so many times.
Here in Australia, the news have the speaker on the center screen where gameplay would be for lets players here on yt and then the interpreter would be on their own screen in the corner. Nice clear view for anyone deaf! Edited: I typed this before watching the video i didnt realise what its called until after. Picture-in-picture

I also realised while watching the news(press conference) that the picture-in-picture thing is better because when the interpreter was standing next to the speaker, the camera people would zoom out a lot or even show the audience when the speaker was talking. There’s a local organization in my community that makes special masks for current workers (doctors, supermarket employees, police officers) that are cloth everywhere and there’s a plastic piece where the mouth area of the mask is supposed to be (made of like face shield material) so that deaf and hard of hard of hearing people can still read lips in public spaces :)
I really love Sign Duo. They’re so REAL and through this channel I became more aware of the deaf community. I’m trying to learn ASL and when you guys post it’s one of the highlights of my day! Watching you guys from Tokyo!! 🥰

You guys are amazing. I was originally a Deaf Education Teacher. I then became a Doctor of Audiology and practiced for 10 years before I became a stay at home dad for a few years. I now teach Middle School Sign Language and before the Shelter in Place for Corona virus happened I showed my students your "Threw my Food away in the Drive Thru" video. My students were shocked that this kind of discrimination could happen in today's society. We had a long talk about that type of problem. During my online teaching I plan on showing this video so they can get first hand knowledge about y'alls experience during quarantine. Thank y'all...stay safe. :-)
I’m hard of hearing and I am having a hell of a time communicating with people rn. Because of the masks and plexi glass It is so difficult to hear people that usually I just leave or buy something I wasn’t looking for because I can’t hear what the guy said. Another problem is people yelling across the street to me a greeting or neighbours trying to have a conversation and I am only catching small parts of the conversation. I can’t even imagine what it’s like for people who are deaf
Hey I'm in the same boat right now as a hard of hearing person and it's especially hard for me at work but my co workers are generally nice about it and will repeat for me or point to what they need or pull down their mask for a minute if they can but it has been a real struggle. Limiting.
Both my parents were Deaf and my boyfriend is extremely hard of hearing and refuses to get hearing aids. I find it to be ridiculous that he doesn't he can afford them however, just refuses. I don't get it I don't understand and it's causing problems in our relationship.

Ps THANKS SOooo MUCH for the 2 months free!! B/c of your guys generalities, I can learn sign the right way, and learn its history. So much love to you both, and the pup! 🥰❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏😁
I really liked that you taught us some new signs that are useful during this time! I'd love to see more of that in future videos - like when you go somewhere and get treats, could you teach us some signs that relate to where you are? I really like learning from you guys - Ryan especially makes it so easy to learn how the signs should look (from different angles and things). I really appreciate that!
I’m almost done with that ASL beginner course on Skillshare thanks you you both!! I signed up last time and I’ve been loving it..thank you both for inspiring me every day to learn and love that you guys are still uploading during this crazy time..stay safe 🤟🏼
I’m in California. The gov, and the mayor of Los Angeles have interpreters as well as the health dept. they are in Orange County, not sure on their mayor.
Hey! You both are so inspiring and have inspired me and probably many others to learn sign language. I wish they taught us in school... keep inspiring and stay safe 💖
One of the kids in my kindergarten class has Cp so we all learned asl until grade 2. I wish it continued! Even at my uni I wanted to learn asl but they didn’t offer it!
I am currently nearing the end of my first year ASL class and I LOVE it. I now want to become an ASL interpreter when I graduate high school. You two are very inspiring for me. Thank you so much!!❤
Yay for skill share!!! Also I love how welcoming Ryan is to people learning sign language. When I had my son back in 2012, I taught him tons of baby signs. I remember dirty looks because my son would sign food and then say something like “snack” I would reply with the sign OK or say okay. People were not nice about it. Times have changed. My son and I still use sign language back and fourth. I think it’s an amazing thing to be able to maybe see someone trying to talk to someone who is deaf and running up and be able to be that Interpreter when they need it. Even just know the abcs can get you far. Thank you guys!!!
15:00 this is a bit issue with the visually impaired community too. I get ppl waiving at me and I can’t see them or people with king I’m rolling my eyes at them even tho I didn’t even see them. People need to just be more understanding and accept that you can’t always be seen and heard.
I loved this video so much because both Ryan and Ellen seemed more relaxed and happy!!! I love them so much and this is by far my favorite video, I loved it, especially when Ryan was laughing at Ellen’s sign😂😂
I love to see how you go through days together. Shopping, cooking, doing work around the house and garage, playing with Java. We are here to support the two of you while you entertain us with your sweet world you live in. Thank you both for sharing your lives with us.
whoah, what an eye-opener. I realize I judge people at the store for being rude and in my way all the time! They could just be unable to hear me! I didn't even think about that, thanks for the different perspective!
you all mentined how having to wear masks is really hard for D/deaf people and how they communicate with other D/deaf people as well as with hearing people. check out this story! Ashley Lawrence, Deaf Education major at Eastern Kentucky University designed a deaf-friendly mask! here is the link: www.accessandmobilityprofessional.com/student-creates-face-masks-for-hearing-impaired-and-shares-design-online/
Yep, another product made by the hearing. They have been making masks with a clear spot for years, the proper ones that can be worn in surgery, by a deaf company.
Thank you guys! This video is so helpful. I'm not Deaf personally, but j love Sign Language. It's such a beautiful language. I feel like people could even use sign language in a time like this to limit contact and needs to be verbal. I'm actually in my second year of sign language atm!
There’s just some things people don’t understand about deaf people. I have a deaf sister and it took me a while to learn sign language because she can’t hear me. And just like Ryan, she chooses not to talk. And it’s not just like your simple ABC’s, because it takes way more letters and sounds.
Over a year ago and just watching it right now, I guess you could say I'm catching up on your vlogs slowly but surely. You guys rock and always make me feel like I'm there with you.
Brooklynn Thomas one of their last videos show them going to a fast food restaurant and them refusing to take his order or serve him because they think he is faking it.
I respect and value what you two are doing in bringing awareness to the deaf and hearing community. It is a gift to communicate so well together and be willing to answer honestly difficult questions to us your audience. Keep it up! I am learning ASL during quarantine and enjoy reading the sign language interactions. I don’t know the “how you knew he/she was the one? story, and would like to see how this relationship matures with the years together, involving other deaf, hard-hearing and hearing community to be involved in the conversations. This is not a class, but sharing real life experiences and adjustments with one and another in today’s world and how we can better invest/communicate in relationships with the deaf. Thank you!
Just signed up with skill shared to learn Sign !! I’m soo very excited as this will become soo useful for me, and others on the receiving end who are deaf/hearing impaired to be able to communicate. I myself can only hear good out of one ear not able to afford a hearing aide, so I feel I can benifit from this greatly, and can get my partner onboard as well. This is also another service I can offer as a Nail Technician. Do you know how many deaf/hearing impaired are discouraged to get their nails done/need nail maintenance service in fear of the communication barrier?
In Germany every official news about the current situation (governmental) have an interpreter. There is also one channel that always has an interpreter for their news. I remember seeing it as kid and thinking it was really cool that they had this kind of Accessibility
I have learned for signing for Quarantine . “Stay home” hand with a “Y” under your hand for stay similar to isolated sign but just with a “Y” and then sign language home. Two sign for quarantine . I just saw this on UA-cam . I can’t find in you tube that have a good Point of view in sign language for quarantine. If I find it I will update this.
It doesn't matter which hand you are using. Some deafies are left handed too. If you are learning some signs from the right handed person, you can do the opposite since your left hand is dominant. It's not that hard. 😀
This video was very helpful, thank you! I have a few questions not related to corona virus. I know all the good parts about your relationship but I want to know that bad/difficult parts about it also. For Ellen: what is the hardest part for you about Ryan being deaf? I’m sure there was a language barrier in the beginning but what about now that you know sign language? And what is your favorite and least favorite part about being hearing? For Ryan: what is the hardest part about Ellen being hearing? And what is you favorite and least favorite part about being deaf?
My mom had a friend that husband was deaf but she sadly passed away due to medical issues and if it wasn’t for her and her husband we would not know asl but we are still learning 😁 STAY SAFE
Im so glad i came across your channel. You guys remind me of my parents. My dad is deaf and mom is a hearing person. Just like ellen, my mom learned signed language after she met my dad. You guys make me happy. Love from Nepal.
The way he speaks is so clever, his understanding and his overtake on lots of stuffs are just so ♥️ would be so lovely to have long, deep convos with him.
Have either of you heard of the masks made out of clear plastic? I've never seen one in real life I just think it would be so awesome if they were real ans available for anyone to buy. They'd be so helpful! ❤️
Question! When Ryan does the hand signs, he usually mouthed? the word he's signing, right? (Or at least it seems like it...) was this done out of habit or is it a way for you to keep on remembering what sign is for what word? Or is it for the lips reading people? Thanks a bunch. Hope the questions makes sense♡
Sometime one sign has few meanings. To avoid misunderstanding it's better to mouth those words. It's helpful not only for hearing people but also deaf people to understand each other.
@@01Natalcia01 Yup or subtle differences between signs (like wish, hungry, and horny - same hand shape on the same area of the body, but the frequency or emphasis of the motion are different)
Its awesome that you're learning to weld! I'm a welder. And in trade school there were quite a few deaf people in the program. That's actually one of the big reasons I started learning ASL
Haha. I was showing my parnter the quarentine vs isolation sign and i like isolation, quarentine is hard. Haha Thank you both for another good video to watch during this tough time. Hope you are staying healthy.
I watch videos on UA-cam all the time and often get bored and go for the next one, however when I watch yours I never get bored and always watch til the end! Proves so much that even without a lot of sound the world can still be interesting and fun, it just depends on the people. :)
ironic that a lot of signs related to COVID involve your hands touching/being close to your face when that’s one of the most important things not to do lol
Eh, a lot of signs involve touching the face. All these signs existed before COVID except for COVID (obvs) and quarantine. It's obviously not a big deal when you're at home in isolation, only an issue when you go outside.
As far as the 2nd question- if anyone wants to know there is a channel on UA-cam Calle the Daily Moth and he signs his new stories, lately he's of course been really focusing on Covid-19. It's a really great resource both for the Deaf community and for people like myself learning ASL
Listening to 1 person sign and speak and watching the other just sign I catch myself picking up on Ryan's signs SO much more after having started watching your videos only about 2 weeks ago! It's really cool to be able to see myself learning! I find it easier that trying to guess which of Ryans sign mean what lining it up with the CC. Being able to match what Ellen is saying to what she's signing is helping me learn so fast and then I can practice by watching Ryan. It's really cool. 😊
I saw on the news that some nurses at a hospital somewhere were customizing their mask by cutting big wholes in them and putting the clear plastic shielding there so people who are deaf or hard of hearing could understand them and read there lips if they have too. I taught that was a great idea they had came up with to solve that problem and make it easier for everyone to understand each other and still being safe.
Also, I'm a manager in food service and if I catch one of my employees needing to wash their hands, instead of yelling I do the hand motion to them and while it makes so much sense, I had no idea that was actual sign language, so cool!!
First of all, I really enjoy watching your videos. Asl has always intrigued me and I've been off and on learning it since I was young. My asl is not very good though because I dont know anyone deaf. But my lip reading is pretty spot on. Haha. Anyways I love seeing y'all signing and I've been practicing again.
You guys are a cute couple, every time I see you guys post a new video I smile watching you guys talking, laughing, and smiling. Also,When I watch your guys video I can understand sign language and I can understand what my friends sister is saying because she’s deaf as well❤️Love you guys❤️
Okay I have questions: 1) what is it like working deaf? How do you get a job and do you think people treat you differently as an employee? 2) What would happen if you were home alone and someone broke in? How would you know where they are to protect yourself? 3) how long have you guys been dating and when did you first start dating each other That’s all for now ....
I love watching you guys!! My boyfriends parents are deaf so I am learning more and more about it and I think everyone should at least learn the basics of it! You guys are so inspiring and its amazing to know how big the deaf community really is. It’s fascinating to see how you guys communicate compared to my boyfriends parents. 😊❤️
I just started to watch this channel and I’m already in love with this channel because I love sign language and I want to learn it some day I also used to have a friend that had deaf parents and he knew a little sign language and he decided to teach me a little and after he moved I wanted to learn more and then I found y’all’s channel so thank you I support y’all a lot 😊
I think it would be awesome learning sign from you two. The signs you showed us this video were very informative and also I think a young couple in general can have a big influence on being able to retain that knowledge, you guys have fun with it but it still feels like a lesson. Love from Maryland, stay safe everyone!
You guys are absolutely amazing. UA-cam suggested one of your videos to me, and you have quickly become one of my favorite channels. You both are so informative and inspirational. Thank you for shining light on such an important topic...I am grateful to have learned so much!
OMG Ryan's face when you offered him the cupcake 🤣🤣. Priceless. Guys I want to say that I enjoy your videos so much and thank you for giving out the 2 free months with Skill Share. I already started it few days ago and it's helping me at lot to learn ASL. God bless you and the people form Skill Share.
I'm so happy to see that you and Ellen are doing well. I love you both so much. It's like you are my family. Please take care of yourselves. Lots of love from South Africa 💜

i was wondering this too
Foxxa Chan Productions sometimes that could be hard if you are tapping your face fast it could move too fast and hit your face
I just sign lower on my body and try to not touch my face ☺️

I’m in California. The gov, and the mayor of Los Angeles have interpreters as well as the health dept. they are in Orange County, not sure on their mayor.
Thanks so much for sharing your perspective and helpful information. Java is the cutest.
Hey! You both are so inspiring and have inspired me and probably many others to learn sign language. I wish they taught us in school... keep inspiring and stay safe 💖
Audrey Jette
I know right, I am trying to convince one of the staff at my school to have an asl class
Thank you so much!!❤
My goal is to not turn on closed captions 👍🏼
Yay for skill share!!! Also I love how welcoming Ryan is to people learning sign language. When I had my son back in 2012, I taught him tons of baby signs. I remember dirty looks because my son would sign food and then say something like “snack” I would reply with the sign OK or say okay. People were not nice about it. Times have changed. My son and I still use sign language back and fourth. I think it’s an amazing thing to be able to maybe see someone trying to talk to someone who is deaf and running up and be able to be that Interpreter when they need it. Even just know the abcs can get you far. Thank you guys!!!
Omg I love y’all. I took an ASL class a couple semesters ago & ever since I’ve been so fascinated. Stumbled across y’alls channel! God bless :)
15:00 this is a bit issue with the visually impaired community too. I get ppl waiving at me and I can’t see them or people with king I’m rolling my eyes at them even tho I didn’t even see them. People need to just be more understanding and accept that you can’t always be seen and heard.
No one!
Me when I see the puppy in the intro: PUPPY
I love you guys so much it was so cute when Ellen was trying to sign quarantine and looked at Ryan and he nodded to let her know it was right❤️
I loved this video so much because both Ryan and Ellen seemed more relaxed and happy!!!
Thank you both for sharing your lives with us.

me: watching without subtitles
whoah, what an eye-opener.
Ashley Lawrence, Deaf Education major at Eastern Kentucky University designed a deaf-friendly mask! here is the link:
www.accessandmobilityprofessional.com/student-creates-face-masks-for-hearing-impaired-and-shares-design-online/
Y'all are so great together ❤️❤️
Who else loves there intro 💕
Awesome content, you deserve more views. Keep it up
Ryan trying to catch that bug was hilarious. Deaf people have really sharp eyes. Meanwhile Ellen's just like...
Love you guys!
Over a year ago and just watching it right now, I guess you could say I'm catching up on your vlogs slowly but surely. You guys rock and always make me feel like I'm there with you.
When you tell people that he’s deaf do they always believe you( #huge fan ❤️❤️)
Brooklynn Thomas one of their last videos show them going to a fast food restaurant and them refusing to take his order or serve him because they think he is faking it.
Ramsey Fitzsimmons thank u I’m knew to there Channel so I didn’t get to it
I respect and value what you two are doing in bringing awareness to the deaf and hearing community.
“i had one today already”
i wish i had that much self control
I love you guys
In Germany every official news about the current situation (governmental) have an interpreter.
There is also one channel that always has an interpreter for their news. I remember seeing it as kid and thinking it was really cool that they had this kind of Accessibility
NZ live news always has a person who signs. Sign language is our national language as well as Te reo.
I love seeing you guys in your home environment. It feels really natural and like you guys are much more comfortable and you!
I love how you added Java to the intro!
I have a question. I am left handed. I have a tendency to try signs with my left hand since it is dominant-does it matter which hand you use to sign?
Ramsey Fitzsimmons you would use your dominant hand!
It doesn't matter which hand you are using. Some deafies are left handed too. If you are learning some signs from the right handed person, you can do the opposite since your left hand is dominant. It's not that hard. 😀
It doesn't matter what hand you use!
I can write more with my right hand, but I sign left, because I have an injury in my right hand.
Sign Duo: *Sign Coronovirus*
Australians: THAT'S THE SIGN FOR ECHIDNA!!!!
Echidnas are cute, why you do them like that! D:
Annika W in Melbourne Vic we are taught this sign as Covid !
Jordan John I think they have forgotten the sign for echidna 😭
@@annikaw3506 mfw there's a sign for echina...
My mom had a friend that husband was deaf but she sadly passed away due to medical issues and if it wasn’t for her and her husband we would not know asl but we are still learning 😁 STAY SAFE
Can we get more Java content please? Dogs are a great mood booster :P
Yaaay!! Very excited to watch a new video!! Love you guys xx
Can you do a video on who knows me best between your best friend and Ryan, btw I LOVE YOUR VIDEOSSS❤️🥰🥳😇

Unfortunately a lot of them fog up
I've been seeing so many interpreters on TV. I watch them instead of the speaker. Great video!
Glad to see that!
My closed captions are not working, my sign skills are being put to the test. Did not understand what happened. But still watched it all. Oh well!
Hey Aubrey, that's because this video isn't public yet. How did you get the link to this video?
@@SignDuoChannel my bday is April 9th
@@SignDuoChannel I don't know either
@@SignDuoChannel and I wonder how they did too
Sign Duo oh maybe that is why? I just saw it on your page 😅
You guys are absolutely the kind of positivity we all need right now❤️
Haha
Thank you both for another good video to watch during this tough time.
I'm dying over the ninja fly grab over here, lmao
only auto generated CCs are working 😔
HI Marina, we haven't published this video, because Ryan and I were working on the closed captions. How did you get the link to this video?
How did you do this 3 hours ago? It was posted 3 minutes ago!
@@SignDuoChannel it was up on your UA-cam page
@@mjcoteco7781 weird..
I'm do confused how did you get here 2 hours ago
I’m so glad you taught terms and touched bases on the difficulties for the deaf community. Thank you for sharing. 🤗❤️
As far as the 2nd question- if anyone wants to know there is a channel on UA-cam Calle the Daily Moth and he signs his new stories, lately he's of course been really focusing on Covid-19. It's a really great resource both for the Deaf community and for people like myself learning ASL
By deaf brother moved out last year and I saw myself forgetting sign but watching your videos help so much!
When Ryan took the piece of cupcake despite not really liking it and ate it...🥺🥺🥺❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I loved the beginning mostly his silly impersonation of hearing people. What a lovely couple! ❤️
You two are so amazing together, makes me so happy to see two people who have truly found their person in life
Also, I'm a manager in food service and if I catch one of my employees needing to wash their hands, instead of yelling I do the hand motion to them and while it makes so much sense, I had no idea that was actual sign language, so cool!!
Okay I have questions:
1) what is it like working deaf? How do you get a job and do you think people treat you differently as an employee?
2) What would happen if you were home alone and someone broke in? How would you know where they are to protect yourself?
3) how long have you guys been dating and when did you first start dating each other
That’s all for now ....
Thank you!! Glad to see you are well too! Please stay safe. Love from California!
I love your videos! I am teaching my baby girl simple signs but it has gotten me interested in learning ASL. It really helps me to see it used in dialogue that I find interesting.
YAY A NEW VIDEOOOO!! I’m new and I have been watching all your videos!! Also those cupcakes look delicious!
