Allan Holdsworth i.o.u. Full Album HQ

- I.O.U. is the second studio album by guitarist Allan Holdsworth, released in 1982 through Luna Crack Records/I.O.U. Records and reissued in 1985 through Enigma Records. A previous album, Velvet Darkness, was released in 1976 without Holdsworth's consent, therefore making this (in his view) his first official solo release.

One of the most beautiful complex records ever!
Complex is definitely the perfect word. 👌
I always liked that Allan never got stuck inside that bluesy rock n rolly stuff. He showed the world that guitar can also be played outside of that boring box.
I was 16 when this came out. The store had the black jacket version. I thought I'd found gold. I even played some of the album for my H.S. jazz ensemble teacher. He just stood there, utterly speechless.
And today, are you a pro? Did you take that talent further?
@@sastal Yeah. I've toured and recorded a lot. Nothing huge, just some regional acts. I went further than anyone in my Jazz Class, that's for sure, though that's not particularly impressive.
Allan's playing is a musical puzzle.
The Master Allan Holdsworth! Wow
RIP Paul Williams.
This is awesome and so 80s. I don't think I had ever heard of AH until this popped up unbidden on UA-cam. Thank you for posting it!!
You are very Welcome!
Gracias Allan.
R.I.P dear genius!
The guitar players guitar player. A legend.
RIP Allan Holdsworth. what a genius, technique, phrasing, conception, tone. everything.
@Lothar Lustig yeeeea, i was thinking about that too
This is Timeless Music
God! I will always love Allan Holdswoth!!!
My mom played this all the time when I was a kid! 41 years ago and on still to this day! Same vinyl same turntable!! Crazy
solid state, fer sure ..
interesting to find a woman who likes allan. very rare. i've seen him three times, and the women in the audience were mostly hostages to their nerd boyfriends.
@@jimmythebold589 I have taken 3 women to see Allan, and they were all blown away just as much as the guys I "dragged", and I use the word humorously; no women nor anyone in Allan's audience was a "hostage", and other than liking someone who is relatively unknown to the general public, his male fans were no more nerdy than any other audience, but I get that you were trying to be cute. It just fell flat for me.
Of course I don't deny that Allan's audience was overwhelmingly male, but don't make too much of it; women simply never heard of him for the most part; a ton of the publicity for him was among Guitar Player and other guitar mag readers; overwhelmingly male, more to do with the boys club that most electric guitar music developed into, than any kind of male female difference in hearing and appreciating what they heard. The only place to buy this record when it came out was an order page in Guitar Player magazine, which probably leans as much male as Allan's audience.
Allan himself said that he thought that a lot of women and others who never heard of him, might enjoy his music had they had the chance to learn about it. It's too bad, but in my experience, it is rarer for a woman who hears his music not to like it, than to like it. They just don't know about him, even today, so give them a chance and stop assuming they won't like what they don't know exists.
This Album Changed music forever, nobody wrote like that and the solos are from another dimension... 🙌
Can't believe it. OMG. RIP Dear Allan Holdsworth. All my prayers to his Family and friends. My personal forever thank you Mr. Allan H. LOVE!!!

about 1992 he played a gig in the back of a little mexican restaurant in San Bernardino Ca. His strings probably cost more than he made for the gig. Gary Husband was on drums. They tore it up while we ate chips and salsa. Effing unbelievable
That's crazy.
couch63 I saw him three times. Always 20-60 people max... Crazy. An absolute gift of a musician
Saw him here in Denmark 20 years ago. 30 people in the audience. Amazing he kept up his career in the face of those numbers. So many lovers of stupid music in this world.
More than many bareble in my town. In my country. It's all regretting of regression.
No one deserves.
Couch63 - any chance that gig was in San Marcos and not San Bernandino?
If it was I can explain - that Mexican place was owned by one of Allan's closest personal friends, and he often played there throughout his career. His final gig ended up being there as well (on Apr 10, 2017).
If however the gig was definitely in San Bernandino, then I have no explanation.
I think Holdsworth is the true global Master of Masters. This album is one of the best things I've heard in my life.
I agree. I remember being a young teen and hearing it for the first time - and being totally mesmerised by it
waht are the others?
Holdsworth the greatest guitarist of all time.
that's possible.
Only behind Jimi and Tommy Bolin...
;-) 👍👍
only exhibition without feeling completely.
the music is feeling not exhibition........
@@bernardoiglesias7067 its a differnt kind of emotion. people are not trained to this. i can ear the emotion. im a big fan of satriani, vai, floyd. but this is so unique and awesome. it mental i think
I remember driving 100 miles to see Holdsworth in Boston when this album came out. Blown to bits!!!!!!! RIP glorious player!!!
...the Genius album...first Allan I ever Heard...R.I.P
My brother was Holdsworth guitar tech for two nights in the eighties!!!! Charvels!!!!!
Free-form Al! My fave. Love it.
RIP, Allan. You ripped a hole in the universe, then stepped through.
Cool!Anytime you had that Chance to see Allan Holdsworth,is a GoodlifeTime Life forever!
I bought it when the original album with the black cover came out. On the back it had a telephone number. I called it. When someone with a British accent answered the phone, I asked "who is this?" and I swear he said "the artist". I was blown! I don't know what the hell I said after that! I was a lot younger, needless to say. Holdsworth is really one of the greatest musician/composers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, IMO. I first heard him with UK and then with Bruford. It has really taken years for me to fully digest and appreciate the musical gift that Holdsworth has. Much of the music that he has been a part of has been like a perpetually opening treasure box that grows more fulfilling with the years. How much music in the world can that be said about? Maybe that's really just the mystery of human potential. I'm sure glad Allan has shared some of his with us.
Thanks for your insight!!! See my elderly comment from above! LOL
amazing ! I also bought the black cover in ...oh...1982...1983 or so...Excellent comment that exactly echoes my feelings about A.H. as well...The music has practically been a religion for me and a couple of musician friends of mine for decades. Jimmy Johnson, Gary Husband , Chad Wackerman, all of the TRULY incredible bass players and drummers he has worked with as well...all true genius's...A.H. should be renowned world wide for exactly the reasons you mention. His work with Virgil Donati and the amazing Anthony Crawford is also stunning...Honestly , it is incredibly unobservant of me not to have noticed the phone number...That's an amazing story...Wish my friends and I had called...Just goes to show how accessible a true genius of the ages can be while , ironically ,superficial , comparatively UNtalented disposable pop-culture "icons" reap reward and millions of $$$...Time will widely recognize people like him but it should have been decades ago
Could not agree with you more!
rembeadgc-strength in numbers - the crusade to spread the "good sound" must continue...just kidding...sorta
I feel you. You Tube is the new Public Access Archive for World Culture and Allan Holdsworth's music is absolutely deserving of its place in the history of world culture.
This music is absolutely astounding. Rich melodic speech, harmonies breathtaking orchestration constantly renewed in the use of the stamps of the instruments, in short a babylonian sound architecture erected by humbles and impetuous interpretes-composers🌺
My God! The more I listen to this album over the years, the more I appreciate its brilliance.
***** ABSOLUTELY !!!
Every time I go without listening for a while and then play it, the power of it overwhelms once again! After decades of hearing and seeing many of the greatest players there are, Allan still astounds with how complete his genius musical vision was, like he invented the game, built the stadiums, then created and dominated the global big league for his entire life. There is no substitute, which is why his death, even for those of us that knew only his playing and not the man himself, left such a big void in our lives never to be filled by anyone else.
There is a deep sadness in knowing that some of the greatest musical experiences that are possible as a listener, particularly as a guitar enthusiast, are almost certainly the Holdsworth shows of the past, never to be repeated. Looking forward to the next opportunity to see him live was a defining part of life for many of us; a guaranteed mind blowing, spiritually uplifting to the point of overwhelming, experience.
The only consolation is continuing to listen to the recordings, talk about him with others who appreciate what we had, and taking some solace in seeing his influence continue with new and experienced listeners.
I’m a ‘Velvet Darkness’ type myself. .

There was this maintenance guy where I once worked. He was a braggart. Karate, etc. Then he started talking about shredding. I listened to some of his "shredders." They were fine. But i decided to give him some Holdsworth. Sent him a link to this album. A few minutes later, he walked out of his office to mine. He had this astonished look in his eyes.
He merely said, "holy christ!"
I've always felt lucky to have the gene that lets me appreciate this kind of music. There's such a depth and breadth to it, that makes it thrilling to listen to. Rest in peace Allan. You were a genius.
Never heard it put that way before, but I know what you mean. What's funny is that he always played the chord progression he was about to solo over before he did it, so the listener's ears could connect the lines and "unusual voicings" to the chords! Lol He knew he was different...in a good way :-) Compositionally, he was kind of like Pat Metheny at times, but soloing...completely in his own lane.
Perfectly explained
Bak in 1987 I was at the military service and heard that Allan had to play not far from the barracks where I was serving. Unfortunately I couldn't move from there because of a training period: I seriously thought about deserting for the evening gig...unfortunately I didn't :-( Now I think that a few months in prison might have been worth it to see Allan live.
I like to see Allen in concert every chance I get...
I buy all his albums.
He is still a starving musician, please support the greatest we know of in our era.
Jaysus, 20 seconds in and I know this is going to be an album I remember. What a sound.
I 1st heard about Allan Holdsworth when I was in high school back in the glorious 80's.
One of my fellow musician buddies told me that he read an article where Eddie Van Halen said his favorite guitarist was Allan Holdsworth. Well we had to hear this guy so I got the album Metal Fatigue and it was love at 1st listen. I read an article sometime later where Eddie Van Halen said Allan invited him to play live with him one night. He said that Allan was so good that he felt like a horse's ass trying to play with him. Eddie Van Halen for crying out loud! That's how amazing Allan was and will always be. I can't believe I'm listening to Allan Holdsworth in a world where he is no longer with us.
I went to three of the first concerts during the eighties. Allan: superb. .Paul Williams: mesmerizing! Gary Husband and Jimmy Johnson always had me guessing what they would do next. One of the great recordings of our time. Music to exercise the brain. Not for everyone but, you know what I mean.
LOVE IT! Haven't heard this in a while. I was lucky to meet Allan at the beginning of the IOU tour, I mixed monitors for him in a club in the Bay Area, and ended up mixing for him for a few years on the live shows in the US. Gary Husband on drums, and grand piano, Paul Carmichael on bass, Paul Williams of course singing, then Jeff Berlin came aboard and played unbelievable bass lines and added something special. Then Chad on drums and Jimmie Johnson on bass. I still have so many live recordings from those days and I promised myself tonight I would dig them out and get them to digital. Those days will always be remembered fondly!! Just got off the phone with Allan and he sounds fantastic!! So glad..... One of the nicest guys I've ever worked for.
Like...whoa dude.God loves you deeply
Dude this was four years ago, you gotta get those live recordings out, keep me in the loop bud thx
tvdirectormarcus - I was at his show in the early part of 1982.
At the Keystone Berkeley.
Bought the album, the first pressed ones. (Black one)
He was selling them at the back of the club for $5.
I was walking around outside after the show and some dude saw the album under my arm and said he’s autographing them inside. So I walked into the club and hardly anybody was around and I poked my head in the dressing room and he was the only one in there.
He signed it for me and we talked and he gave me a few of his beers, he loved Coors!
We talked about music and a lady who wrote for some magazine did an interview with him. Allan was a very nice guy.
I still have the album.
Later the same year I saw him again at the same place and he had Jeff Berlin on bass!
anthony felker ...what a beautiful series of events in your life...Bright Moments to you...
I saw him at the Roxy in LA on this tour, bought the black album, recorded it to cassette for the car, I practically lived in this album for a year or so.

An innovator, a truly original voice on guitar (or any instrument for that matter), a compositional master par excellence, genius, terrifyingly beautiful. Celebrate this music! RIP Allan.
totally unique approach to chords. not a single ii I V on this album. love the chordal sound, it's eerie

Rest in heaven ...guitar giant ...thank you so much for your music , it has touched allot of lives ..
I've been so intrigued by this Allan's violin solo on Temporary Fault since the 80's. His choices of the notes and what the tone!
wish he had played it more in his music. then again i really liked his singing, from igginbottom. he had a nice, high, airy voice.
@@jimmythebold589
His vocal on "At The Edge" from the duet album with Gordon Beck "The Things You See" is superb. The song eventually became the part of "The Things You See" we know. His voice was slivery and he was a really really and really good singer with deep emotion.
I like his voice million times more than Clapton's, but Allan was too shy and didn't go through a vocal music path. If he took it and sang his songs by himself, he would have had more financial success, I'm sure..
R.I.P &....thank you.
Che meraviglia.
This album changed my drumming world. Gary Husband is the man. I've met him personally and he sincerely has no idea how good he is. He's a monster! Not just drums, piano too. But I just love his punchy, snappy, unpredictable, high energy drumming style. I always loved drumming along to the Allan Holdsworth albums that Gary played on. So fun to play. So fun. Nobody plays like this guy. And I can only try.
Allan and Gary born to play together.
This is the best album I have ever heard
God must have wanted guitar lessons. RIP Alan.
Honoratus Purpleski Okay, you actually made me smile at the loss. Perhaps you are right. He did know the Secret Chord, after all.

@@Henrydingus01123 It totally sounds like Paul Williams to me.
Ate very diferent
My very amazing friend and pastor played drums with "Big Al"..... what a great musician.
I was in a metal band when this came out. I flipped over it. Listened to it non stop for weeks. First Holdsworth I heard was U.K. so was ready for it.
I was too. Playing early Maiden and our originals that sounded like Maiden. Then this slammed me hard. And one of my friends, with huge hands was learning these songs perfectly by ear. He opened for Holdsworth on his first US tour for this album. A special time.
I was in Cambridge long time ago, watching a Band called Tuna Fish if I recall. Playing Space Invaders was a guy with his guitar as I walked to the loo, I said are you playing tonight, he said "yeah in a sec, just finish this game", when I came out he was still there, I said you still here, "he said, just stopping now" we walked by the side of the stage together. My mates looked at me "Do you know who he is ?" I said no, but he is a really sound guy. He played like a demon I was forever hooked on ALAN HOLDSWORTH.
The first Allan Holdsworth album I've ever listened to and the rest is history....Still listening to him....
I got the vinyl version of "IOU", which was produced by Allan Holdsworth, at the time of its release. In the place called Kichijoji in Tokyo, the label part in the center is plain and printed with AH-100. It's a treasure.
That sounds like a special treasure indeed.
We are so lucky that Allan powered through financial hardships to create and deliver his music to us...with special low budget label as you have. That label says it all!
Musical genius. Difficult to me describe how i feel when i listen to his music...
+Gabriel Landim Uplifting? Goosebumps? Ethereal maybe? As though you're being transported into a higher plain of existence...Muwhahahahahaha
indescribable is good
perfect metaphor for his uniqueness as a composer. His chord progressions are nebulous clusters that color outside, above, below the line. You literally have to find your own •through-line• in your mind’s ear. very special. Not just randomness either. There is shape there, it’s just impressionistic I guess
Unique and genius.rip Allan
R.I.P. Allan Holdsworth. It's heavy shocking news that I've got today.
I still do remember clearly this album gave me great impact when its sound had been played at local imported LP shop where I used to visit there frequently app. 35 years ago. As soon as I've got this sound, quickly I opened my wallet and decided to purchase this copy in spite of my own poor personal financial situation that time...
You're still my HERO and shall be my HERO in future too. Many thanks for remarkable performance !!!
First one for me to, followed by Road games. It brings back a lot of memories listening to this right now!
"The Sixteen Men of Tain" is also excellent works of Allan as well as "Road Games".
'Tain' is a work of art imho - it has set the bar high and may never be reached by us mere mortals.
A worthy tribute.
Wishing a Happy 70th Birthday to Maestro Holdsworth! Thanks for the decades of sublime music making! Wishing him many more.
Allan certainly was a gift from the music God's, and now he rests beside them, after having left his mark for the rest of us mere mortal souls.
Rip genius

This is my favourite music of all time, Yes ,The best guitar player ever! and I must say, Paul Williams vocals fit perfect with this band. this music touches my soul, Godspeed Allan.
I ordered this album thru a local music store in about Sept 1982 after reading an album review in Guitar Player magazine. I never heard of him before but I was always interested in new guitar players, even though I don't even play this style or play this good. But after hearing it, musically speaking, it was a game changer, definitely. So I have an original black version, first release, I'll never get rid of it.
‘Letters of Marque’ is a manifesto to restraint, chordal phrasing, and explosive runs. This group listened to each other, breathed with each other, and communicated like a fine tuned trio and quartet. This album is one of Allan’s finest.
letters also features one of the best drum solos ever, though i think every note gary plays on the drums on this album is pure gold. this album would have not been the same with any other drummer, even the possibly more amazing gary novak. gary's cadences are just so perfect and magical.
A few friends of mine and I went to see I.O.U in Manhattan NYC, when they did their tour after making this album, we had a chance to talk to Alan after the gig, we were big Holdsworth fans from hearing him on the Tony Williams Lifetime records. He was the nicest most humble musician we ever met, he actually did not want to talk about music and said he missed his family in England, One guy asked him how it felt to be the greatest guitar player in the world, he really did not want to hear that, he was a supreme musician a one of a kind and even better person
Gary Husband posted on FB that the fantastic vocalist Paul Williams passed away...a tremendous loss for music...
RIP Paul Williams, I always found his voice (at least in his work with Alan) to be timeless and heroic.
I loved Williams unique approach to the voice Perfect for Holdsworth
I still do not believe it....The best...R.I.P.
The intro to the first track is astonishing - in 5 seconds it sells the entire premise of the album. Beginning to 'fall' for vocalist Paul Williams - so perfect for this - great tone and authority.
You nailed it The openig chords and lead completely grabbed me in that this is what I was 'waiting' for all those years and when Paul starts singing.....well... he completed the formula !
I had to replay the intro 3 times to actually believe it happened. Yes, I was having an imaginary conversation with Allan at the bar (with a pint). My opener was, "You guys were great tonight but how 'bout that Paul Williams?" LOL
I thought the same... It promises I thought.
I agree I felt the same about Pat Matheny’s bright size life first few seconds set it all up
"authority" good way of putting it
Rest in peace, you will be sorely missed.
I had been hipped to the man through UK, Gong, Bruford etc and I remember listening to the things you see in the record store in 1982 thinking, hmm, will I like this? I could only buy one record pr week or maybe two secondhand. Then the smooth opening chords in where is one and i thought, ok. Over the next few days it hit me, every song, all of it. It's the record I've listened to the most over the years. I keep coming back to it and it's that same feeling. God! if only we can have snakes and ladders soon, or whatever it's name is going to be
Yeah, ditto. My guitar teacher played UK for me the first time, in about 1980, along with Velvet Darkness. I actually managed to find a copy a few months later, along with this one.

Thanks Claudio For Your and Our Audio Entertainment,I've been listening to this, since I bought the cassette tape in Jan of 89.Take care,Jcs
I remember seeing him on synthax in Newark NJ at the "Jazz Explosion" with Stanley Clarke in the 90's. Me and my friends all budding musicians ' They played "Pudwud" from Sand I was in awe. I used to walk down the middle of the street in my hometown with Roadgames on my portable until a car would sound the horn to get out of the way. Amazing.
Également vu à Lyon avec Stanley Clark, sûrement la même tournée👌
I bought this when it came out after following his playing for years after Hendrix passed. Still sounds fresh...what a monster.
Holdsworth simple the best, very, very the best.
allan holdsworth is an extrodinary iconic jazz fusion guitarist for the ages.
It's like listening to an alien talking to you... which is nice to hear now and then especially when you have a fatigue from metal music. (pun intended).
The first and still greatest masterpiece in Holdsworth's career. A true milestone of the electric guitar if there ever was one. Gary Husband on drums, Paul Carmichael on bass (hired because he was the only bass player out of the those auditioned who did not copy the style of Jaco Pastorius at the time), Paul Williams vocals.
one of the best albums ever.
on vinyl it sounds even better ;) !
You Sir, owe us Nothing❤️
Holdsworth since the 80 's has been the matriarch of my chosen musical pyramid. Beauty, intrigue, mystery, triumphs, transitions and almost alien. I cant describe well enough how this music has made life more colorful and treasured. All his contributors on all his albums played key parts to make this chemistry phenomenon a top shelf time stamp for those that DO understand human brilliance. Thank you. Darryl Johnson from LedZepplica
I think you meant patriarch.. matriarch is female :)
OMG. Don't tell Allan I'm a confused mega fan. Patriarch. I get it now. Thanks for the heads up.
No worries, just having a bit of fun.. You're half right though - IOU is the mother of all Holdsworth albums, after all :)
I too have enjoyed all of Mr. Holdsworth's music. Another fave is The Sixteen Men of Tain. I find that i like to listen to some of his music daily. The more i listen, the more i understand, the more i understand, the more i want to go a little deeper into what his music says. I feel different after hearing his music.
Couldn't agree more - and 'Tain' is a masterpiece of music imho.
An amazing album. Was saddened to learn today in the morning that Alan is no longer with us. RIP.
Saw him playing this material at the Half Moon Putney circa 1980. Most innovative guitarist & composer in England. Then he had to move to the USA as he couldn't make a living out of music here !
THANK YOU for uploading this piece of history! Humanity will never be able to repay you enough
1985 and it sounds better and fresher than many other things out there. Absolutely amazing. I somehow managed to lose this vinyl back in the day. What a great album, probably one of the best in his output.
aagreed !
Recorded 1979 on The Barge in England.
pleximanic You're right...there was a CD edition in 1985 from Enigma Records... guess I mixed the dates
Saw them play this at the Paradise in early 80s; transcendant. Husband is like that Star Trek creature that attaches to your (or more precisely, Holdsworth's) brain stem and augments perfectly while Carmichael's bass is meanwhile singing praise and commentary. The definitive Holdsworth ensemble work (though I do revere his work with Bruford, as well...)
Antonio Elena i
Il più bel disco del mondo.
This is my first time really delving into Holdsworth, and I'm REALLY loving what I'm hearing.
bill bruford's one of a kind deserves your attention. this is my fav allan album, the bruford one is my second, i think allan's lead playing is more melodious, bluesy and soulful on 'one of a kind' and i like the more guitaristic tone.
The Album that changed my musical world.. :-)
The singer is just so great, and the remaining band members all great, from what I can tell, being an intermediate guitarist and relative noob on the keys. I listened to this album early on when I got into guitar just because I heard so much about Allan Holdsworth's greatness. I appreciate it now a lot more than I did back then. I think it mostly "goes over my head", so to speak, since I'm not intimately familiar with jazz improvisation though I'm pretty well-versed in all music theory fundamentals. But I like that there is a complexity to it that I don't understand. I sometimes get bored with popular music because it's too easy to decipher, and that is not at all the case with this music. I love it.
Claudio Cinieri. SEI ITALIANO? HO VISTO PER PRIMA VOLTA HOLDSWORTH , IN ITALY, WITH WILLIAMS, JON HISEMAN, MARK CLARKE.... COME BANDA: JON HISEMAN'S TEMPEST...
AND AFTER THAT, HE BECAME A GREAT PART OF MY LIFE!!!!! THANK YOU MY FRIEND!!!
Nobody comes close to this - nobody -thanks for posting.
check out Kevin Eubanks - Sundance album 1984
I had a sony walkman, and would ride the bus.. and listen to this.. and my friends also loved this record my band mates especially I miss them . I need band or some kind of way to make music .. or perish.
I loved this album ..... got into the the show at Keystone Palo Alto under age......I begged the doorman....slipped him a couple twenties and he said " let me find you a table".....mean while the person I brought said..."too man notes....my brain hurts...." I laughed in his face.
I shan't ever recover from this album. Gary Husband's drums, the lovely vocal melodies, Allan's singular guitar playing, his jazz solos and composition style (check out his violin solo!). I like Paul Carmichael's bass too. *****
it's just a classy album!~
