- Amtrak Auto Train. This is the longest passenger train in America and at times is the worlds longest. Amtrak runs the daily Auto Train from Sanford Florida to Lorton Virginia. Count the cars as it crosses the level railway crossing in DeLand Florida. Amtrak has auto racks on this train and you can actually put your car or truck on the train and travel with it between these 2 cities. This is the only train like this in America. Listen in on 160.590 and if you are in Sanford Florida you can listen to them switching and building the train on 161.550 megahertz. The Ghan in Australia has this train covered, it runs 44 passanger coaches regularly from Adelaide to Darwin, a distance of 3,000 kilometres. It is the longest passenger train in the world.........
It was 37 cars but I think in India they are even longer.

India has 28 approx only passenger coaches.. here it is mixed with cargos

but that's not the world's longest train. trains in India are much longer.
I didn’t count the passenger cars but when I worked on the CNR in Canada on the Super Continental we ran anywhere from 22-28 passenger cars in the summer out west. I do like the auto carriers on the tail end of Amtrak. A great way to go to Florida and have your car while you are there!

Technically ..... this doesn't qualify as a passenger train.
Out here the regular express / mail passenger trains run with 24 carriages/coaches/bogies/compartments. I just love the ALCO locomotives WDM,WDG & WDP series in the Indian Railways, their sheer power, design and performance is unmatched and very dependable. More than all this I simply cannot get enough of their "chugging" and smoking. No wonder they're referred to as the work-horse of the Indian Railways - they really are.
They're slowly but surely getting phased out with the entry of EMD's but it will take some time before they're retired for good.

In the Netherlands there was a passenger train with 60 cars. It was 1.6 kilometers long and had a weight of 2.6 million kilo. So I think this was the longest passenger train.(in 1989)

The worlds longest passenger train is actually the Indian Pacific referencing its route the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The train is owned by Great Southern Rail Australia and the route is owned by Pacific Southern Railways located in Australia. The train travels on a route from Sydney, NSW, AUS on the Pacific Ocean via Melbourne, VIC, AUS on the Southern Ocean via Adelaide, SA, AUS on the Southern Ocean to its final destination Perth, WA, AUS on the Indian Ocean. The train is one of two of Australia’s Transcontinental railways with the Indian Pacific operating East to West and the Ghan operating North to South. However on to the train it’s self, it has a total of 2-3 Locomotives and 37 Cars including 30 passenger cars, 2 motor rail cars, 4 freighter cars and 1 crew car totalling at a length of 774m (846yd).

I see myself there in this video a few times on this particular day taking video with my iPhone 6S plus of the auto train blasting thru there at deland Florida. So cool. I sure enjoyed my vacation to Florida this year on the auto train. Glad to have met you Jaw Tooth and millennium force there at the Amtrak depot that day for a bit of Train action. Be sure to check out my UA-cam channel as I will be adding a few of the other neat videos I took of the auto train passing thru there and also the silver meteor when it ran non stop as an officers special with extra cars. Hopefully I will be back in Florida again sometime in the years to come.

Although it's the world's lognest normal passenger train (Australia's The Ghan can be up to 35 to 40 passenger cars long with two auto carriers), there was a Beligan test train in April 1991 with 70 coaches!
As those have known of the auto rack train running between Virginia and Florida giving motorists the chance to let someone else take them and their vehicle along to avoid the congestion on the eastern seaboard interstate.

I like this autotrain concept. A handful of folks out there hang on to the silly dream of the U.S. having passenger rail like they have in Europe. But that just ain't gonna ever happen again. We LOVE our cars WAY to much. No way in hell i'm gonna want to take a freakin' train everywhere after I just bought a brand new BMW or a brand new chevy Tahoe. But this autotrain blends the two concepts of rail and love of autos. Perfect.

The Ghan train in Australia has run 2 locos and 44 carriages a total length of 3600ft.or 0.7 miles long.this was a record breaking run though connecting Adelaide in Sth Australia to Darwin in the top in Northern Territory.2nd longest train is the Indian Pacific Train running from Sydney (east coast) to Perth West Australia train length 2540ft

It is a long train, but by no means the longest ever. That record goes to the dutch railways who ran a 60 car train with a total lenght of 1608m (1 mile for you americans out there) on febuary 21 1989
I’ve seen videos of trains in India. They’re pretty long with about 30 passenger cars and 1-2 locomotives, weather they’re electric, or diesel. I’d say they’re just about the same as the Auto-Train.

Mom & Dad (now both deceased) took the Auto-Train once, quite a few years ago. (Dad passed in 1999.) and they both swore never again. No issues with the car, other than some really off-the-wall times to get to Lorton. However, the train ride really turned 'em off. (They snow-birded for quite a few years.)

If you consider only passenger coaches then the longest passenger train in the world is prayagraj express of India. This train contains many non passenger coaches too.

Sorry to disappoint all of you, but the longest passenger train in the world is 'The Ghan'. It runs from Adelaide South Australia to Darwin in the Northern Territory. At full length it is 1096 meters long, with 2 locos, 1 car transporter and 40 passenger cars.
This train has more cars than that counting the auto racks on it
That’s certainly a long passenger train but in terms of total number of passenger cars, nothing beats The Ghan between Adelaide and Darwin in Australia with up to 48 passenger cars in peak season. That’s 1.1 kilometres long.
More auto racks than passenger cars. I can imagine how the train could be really long!

So you were the one with Milenniumforce that I saw there. I hadnt recognized you. Im one of the drivers who load the auto train.
I wanted to film the cars being loaded into the train but when we returned it was too late. That is cool that you were there when we were! The intro to this video with the Dash 8 ( I think that's what it is ) switching the train was shot last year in April but the rest of the video including in the station was shot on the 15th. My goal is to put my truck on the train and film the ride along with the vehicles being loaded and unloaded. I saw a special price a few months back. Thanks for watching my video!

I have quite a lot of video from the AutoTrain facility myself. Including them loading the cars into the autorack cars. Was very cool to watch then load them in. However, I have not posted any of my train videos online.
