Hi Dan and Qiang 👋… so my bf and I are visiting Antigua & Lake Atitlan in December.. can’t wait 💚… so excited!! If you both are there, would be awesome to meet you in person.
Dan, you hit on most of the Mexican cities on our possible retirement city list. We’ll be starting in Queretaro, living for a year or two in our daughters house, which sits empty….stay there until our senior dogs pass away probably. But then we hope to check out Oaxaca, Guanajuato, San Cristobal, Morelia, and Puebla. Then make our way down to Antigua and Lake Atitlan. We’ll be in the US for another 6-18 months….counting the days !

Thank you for all the great information. I am looking to move abroad within the next 6 months and this report really helps. As far as Costa Rica goes, I totally agree with you that it is too expensive. I love CR but it's become cost prohibitive.
Argentina wasn't even on my personal list precisely because of the severely devalued Peso. I was there in 2005 when it had only devalued to about 1USD=3ARS. It is so much worse now, considering that when it was unpegged from 1=1 the Argentine economy was already on a downward spiral. I'm still cautious of that spiral today -- but I hadn't fully considered that I wouldn't be going there as a worker - but as a retiree with my fiscal source securely anchored in the US still. It was refreshing to see your photos and that things were still largely kept up, though there is some deterioration I can see. I do hope things can improve. Bs As would not be my choice of places to live, as it is a huge country with a lot of climates to offer.
By far the best report for slow traveling and considering retirement in Latin America. Thanks Dan I know that was the result of a lot of work and effort but you made it simple and easy plus interesting and fun. I have moved to Turkey for retirement because I like the climate on the Aegean sea, it's also safe and I have found the people to be quiet kind and genuine if one takes the time to get to know them. Once again thanks and all the best 🙏
Aren't you worried about the drug cartels and the cops? Last time I was in Playa Del Carmen two drunk cops in their truck called me over. I was jogging - shorts and tee-shirt. I could smell the alcohol on them from the sidewalk. Their first question was, "Do you have cocaine?" and then the passenger started to get out. I knew he was going to palm drugs into the pocket of my shorts, so I ran away. They were too surprised and drunk to chase me. Last time I will ever visit Mexico. BTW, I was 58 years old at the time.
Today 11.08.2021 in Granada, a couple on a budget can expect to pay about $1,500 a month, which includes everything. A single person can do it on about $1,200 a month. Not my words just a Google search. For what that's worth. lol
Thanks Dan. Could you provide a good comparison between Colombia and Peru? I am leaning towards Peru at this point but need more clarification. Thanks again!
I agree with you about Costa Rica. It has many beautiful places (NOT San Jose) but the prices are much like being in America. Plus the traffic and congestion is really horrible!
Puerto Morelos? It's the most boring place on the entire Riveria Maya! The only thing to do there is catch a collectivo to either Cancun or Playa Del Carmen! You can only sit on the beach doing nothing for a few hours a year before losing your mind. You can't even go to a movie in Puerto Morelos. I agree with you about Playa Del Carmen - it's become a slum the past 10 years, and is getting worse. The seaweed smell along the entire Riveria Maya is unbearable, and has been for several years now. Nobody should retire to the Riveria Maya.
Nothing in Brazil or Chile? Outside of Sao Paulo and Rio, Brazil has many nice places that are less expensice than similar places in Ecuador. Chile, outside of Santiago, also has some nice affordable coastal cities, and Chile is the safest country in South America.
I only share about countries I have been to. I haven't been to Chile but really loved Ecuador, Peru, and Columbia. Brazil was a great place to visit but not really my cup of tea for living.
Puerto Viejo and Cahuita in Costa Rica are fun, beautiful and interesting to visit. You can take a small boat from Cahuita to Bocas del Toro Panama. PV and Cahuita is a beautiful 5 hour drive from San Jose.

Great Information. I’m going to soon be 54 y/0 and retired military. Single and planning to travel to see if I’d be happy retiring on the Caribbean. Thank you so much!!! I’m planning on taking a trip to the Riviera Maya area as I’d like to find a property close to the beach. It sure seems like properties there are going up unrealistically high like here in the USA. I wonder about our economy and especially regarding a possible real estate bubble. I wonder if I should buy now or wait a little there in the Riviera Maya area. Hi Dan, just like you, I traveled the world. I was not on a back packers budget but I also did not splurge and managed my money quite well. I have a basic question for you that is significant for all retirees that want to live and spend time abroad and that's the question of health insurance. Is it possible to get temporarily in countries that you are staying? Is there some kind of a universal health coverage that one can buy and be covered for periods of stay abroad, without necessarily becoming a resident of a country? Hope to have your answer soon.
Belize should be on the list, world class diving and drive golf carts everywhere. Also San Juan del Sur in Nicarauga is like Costa Rica 20 years ago, nature at its finest
Interesting information but a bit of a redundant description at the end of every city "and a couple could live here for a few hundred dollars more a month". Could have said it once at the beginning and saved the repetition.
Wonderful and informative as usual, thank you. Can you consider maybe a separate subject or just a mention as we go, what is happening with Covid now? Have you found your own own vaccine level to provide enough protection? Are some places more aware (masking vaccine use etc) than others? I retired in 2020 and went to Cozumel to scuba dive and found the area had changed drastically since the ten years I had last been there …so tourist driven and not a lot of health care available. I suspect the less touristy places take better care of their population????
Most of the world is comfortable getting vaccines and wearing masks during a pandemic. We have our vaccines and we wear masks and do whatever the doctors recommend in each country. It is just life for now. We don't give it any thought when we are outside the USA.
The fact is, I want to settle down in one place. I always have. I’m in Lisbon on vacation now and I’m checking it out for a possible retirement destination. It’s very nice here and like so much about it, but it’s not what I’m looking for. I’d love to make the Philippines my home, but don’t like the fickle government and slanted laws in the Philippines, so they’re out. I’m seriously leaning towards Panamá. 🤔

I heard of safety problems in Argentina. I heard from friend in Costa Rica and it's probably more expensive and many more expats than 9 or 10 yrs ago. Any information about Paraguay and Uruguay?
Dan, The ease of cheap $300 flights from your favorite place in Mexico to the U.S., versus settling in Buenos Aires makes it a tough choice? However your excellent healthcare rating in Argentina leans me in that direction.
Thank you Chris R! Thanks for watching and commenting. You raise a great point. So it depends on your budget and how often you fly home to see family and friends. :-) Dan

I notice you say single frugal person or couple. Is it safe to say if I double the amounts you mentioned, you could live a nice lifestyle with a good amount of restaurant eating and some activities/entertainment?
It will give you a rough estimate. But you would need to do an exploratory visit and pick a place to live and the kinds of restaurants you want to eat in and activities before you will have a more accurate figure. I explain more here: vagabondbuddha.com/how-to-retire-overseas/

I was a bit surprised too, but pleasantly so, and mostly because I haven't seen Dan make any videos about it! It's my favorite place in all of Latin America (and I've been to most of the places he mentions).
I haven't been to the whole country, just Granada and Little Corn Island. For other places I suggest joining a Nicaragua FB expat group and asking people that live in other places.

I hear you fellow Canadian. I am almost 51, but I will start slow traveling around the world in matter of few months. Early maximized RRSP savings were key for me.
Great video but the governments of most of these S American countries are too untrustworthy and corrupt for my tastes. Everything may seem fine on a Monday and by Wednesday the government falls and you are stuck. I love the idea of slow traveling since you can always fly out of a trouble zone, IF you can get to the airport that is. Well done Dan and Qiang!

@@lreeher "we" don't need you? Well, you certainly don't speak for me, and most likely for many others.
Most of the world is comfortable getting vaccines and wearing masks during a pandemic. We have our vaccines and we wear masks and do whatever the doctors recommend in each country. It is just life for now. We don't give it any thought when we are outside the USA.
Medellin #1!!! All of these other places… HOC TUEY!!! 😛😜🥸
Thanks for your thoughts Courtenay.
We love Portugal. But it is a little more expensive than our other retire cheap in paradise places. Check out Porto while you are there. Stay tuned for our Panama reviews over the next few weeks.
@@VagabondAwake My two friends (who have relocated to Lisbon and who put me up while I was there) and I, did not make it to Porto. We had planned to go up there, but life got in the way.No doubt I t’s probably a nice place to visit, but I hear it gets cold in winter. Energy is expensive over there and I couldn’t afford to keep warm. I hear that it’s often colder inside the homes than it is outside. 😐
“Cobblestone streets and horse drawn carriages to show people the city center”. Shows coffin being loaded into horse drawn hearse adorned with floral arrangements!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂
True. But most of the horse drawn carriages are for two people to ride around seeing the city.
Very nice
Thank you Francis.
Hi guys. I see that DR is not on your list. Latin America has still a lot to offer although I want to see the Philippines.
Bruh, the Philippines is heaven on earth as compared to the DR. Cheaper. Better food and connected (especially in the NCR, Cebu and Davao areas.
@@dekayjones but the vlog is about Latin America
The DR was beautiful but is not in our top 15. Yes, the Philippines is lovely. But it is in SE Asia not Latin America. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hi Dan, i watched your vlog about Buenos Aires so far is your top city down the south, we are thinking about going down to Buenos Aires for long stay, can we buy one way to Argentina ? is there any short cut ? you are expert, please let me know, also do Argentina need covid test & quarantine ? THANK YOU ! 謝謝 !
That sort of information changes quickly so check before you go.
Latin america best place to retire in my honest opion since I know spainish more than tagalog that why I will never retire in fillippines but plan to visit all of major islands over there jesus permits it
I bet bolivia one of top and colombia and chile
I hope to visit both soon!
Where's the best places in Mexico to live? We r Canadian couple, we like the dry weather, low humidity n best English speaking. We r starting to practice Spanish, getting ready to check out central America to get out of this winter CANADIAN CLIMATE! We would like to buy property after we check out where we wana b, for at least 6 mnths a yr. We got excellent pensions n 7 didgets in Canadian money.
Here are my thoughts on that: vagabondbuddha.com/top-10-places-to-live-or-retire-early-in-mexico/
Dan, Have you ever visited Uruguay?
Thank you cabowabo78727! Thanks for watching and commenting. I have not been yet. But it is on the list. :-) Dan
Thx for the video Dan and Qiang. I found at least 6 studio and 1 bedroom furnished Apts in San Cristobal for 90 to 125 USD bet I can live on way under 1000😆 if I get the 90 USD 1 I'll pay her 6 months in advance and keep it even when I'm not there. Secret on how I apt searched without being there yet. After I get an apt there I'll share on how to find cheap Apts. My channel will have a series called EL Cheapo in Chiapas play on words 👌
Thank you Philip Janek! We will interview you on my channel and refer people to your channel to give you a boost. Thanks for watching and commenting. :-) Dan
I'm looking forward to it. Please update us.
I respect you an envy you all nations you visited that is cool
But like I say come visit my town city of champions massillon ohio you will not regret it see why I love my town
It might be a while. Need to finish outside the USA first. :-)
Oh I forgot I got a flight from Chicago to Chiapas for 112.32 crazy cheap 😆
Smoking hot deal Philip. I am going to have to interview you once you are down there and have some cost of living numbers. Dan
@@VagabondAwake you can review my El Cheapo in Chiapas series 😆

I heard of safety problems in Argentina. I heard from friend in Costa Rica and it's probably more expensive and many more expats than 9 or 10 yrs ago. Any information about Paraguay and Uruguay?
Costa Rica is super expensive for a central american country. Did you see my interview with Gil on Monday? He talks about Uruguay.
:-) Dan
@@VagabondAwake if you are 62 it does not give you time to experiment the single retirement life. It is better to settle down with someone that can help you in old age
HI Dan, Do you think it's safe to drive through latin america from north america? Thanks
Nothing is 100% safe anywhere. There are other UA-camrs that do it though.
I notice you say single frugal person or couple. Is it safe to say if I double the amounts you mentioned, you could live a nice lifestyle with a good amount of restaurant eating and some activities/entertainment?
Dan considers frugal as someone who eats in restaurants 2 or 3 times per week.... if I remember well from his other VBLOG s.
It will give you a rough estimate. But you would need to do an exploratory visit and pick a place to live and the kinds of restaurants you want to eat in and activities before you will have a more accurate figure. I explain more here: vagabondbuddha.com/how-to-retire-overseas/
The impression I have of Latin America is that it is dangerous for Americans. Surprised you didn’t mention the safety factor of each place.
The USA is a very dangerous place for "unitedstaters' (aka 'americans'). Many people carry guns and the news frequently mention incidents of shootouts.
Here are my thoughts on safety that apply everywhere in the world including the USA: vagabondbuddha.com/how-to-travel-the-world-safely/
You never mention the health care which is very important to the retirees...

Brazil is an expensive country but living in the south of the country is similar to living in europe or USA .Believe it or not.
Really??? I never heard of that. Mind to elaborate?
@@prika2000 Beautiful and modern cities, good infraestructure, good healthcare, european colonization mainly germans and italians. You really dont feel like being in third world country
Just google Florianopolis, the capital of the state of Santa Catarina and Gramado, the most beautiful town in the south of Brazil and you will understand what I mean.
There are millions of german and italian descents in this part of Brazil who are doing a great job in terms of first world life here.
@@sergiomildner7903 Thanks Sergio. I will do my own research of those 2 cities. How much would be a cost if living for single individual, and how much for a couple, monthly?
Mind Boggling !!! LOL !!!
Thank you Master G!
I’m surprised about Buenos Aires being number one.
Thank you Larry Picard! Thanks for watching and commenting. Have you been there? It is beautiful. :-) Dan
I was a bit surprised too, but pleasantly so, and mostly because I haven't seen Dan make any videos about it! It's my favorite place in all of Latin America (and I've been to most of the places he mentions).
Is Guatemala safe for travel?
We were fine in Antigua and Lake Atitlan. But some people say other parts are not safe.
Very very gorgous town oaxaca
Totally. Have you been there?
How is Nicaragua safety country wide ??
I haven't been to the whole country, just Granada and Little Corn Island. For other places I suggest joining a Nicaragua FB expat group and asking people that live in other places.
Dan, I admire you .. I live in Canada, winters are long in here around 7 months .. what can I do to retire early? What type of business? I don't have much of a pension , I am 50 years old, with my wife .
I hear you fellow Canadian. I am almost 51, but I will start slow traveling around the world in matter of few months. Early maximized RRSP savings were key for me.
Sorry to hear that Elbert. Here is how we pay for our travels life. vagabondbuddha.com/courses/the-hobby-income-course/
You did not say bolivia or ecaudor or chile?
Why?
Cuenca Ecuador is listed 11th. I haven't been to Chile or Bolivia yet.

Hi I love to travel with you my friend
Thanks Arfan.
