Well done, Dan. This is one of your best interview videos ever! Gil is a fascinating and articulate guy. Perhaps you could do another interview with him that focuses more on Southeast Asia. Also, maybe even a "European tour" interview, if he's willing. Just a suggestion. I think they would be great videos! As someone who has been in more than 25 countries, I highly value well-informed opinions from other travelers with extensive experience. They are few and far between.

Women are beautiful and extremely approachable. Very friendly people. Beautiful scenery. Great culture. Low cost of living.

You can live quite well in Medellin Colombia on 1500 Canadian Dollars per month including renting a 2 or 3 bedroom apt. As a Canadian retiree im doing just that !

Dan you should make a video for the best elevation for weather in Latin America. When you get up around 5000’ it gets cool or cold at night. Below 2000’ it stays hot all the time. I’m sure you know the best elevation for comfort and the best places to live or visit.✌️
If you are not concerned with comfort, lots of countries qualify for the 1000 bucks a month income. In reality, to live like a human being, you need about 2500 USD a month.

Yes. travelers are interesting people. They know life can be lived one hundred different ways so they don't get upset or even bother to correct people much when other people tell them there is only one way. It is a very laid back international view of the world.
Great interview! I was in Boquete when Covid hit March 2020. They gave tourists 48 hours to get out before they shut down the airports for the next six months. Panama had one of the strictest lockdowns in the world. I tried to get my pensionada visa but my fingerprints are worn off so it was impossible. It was very easy to get permanent residency in Mexico. I would love to visit Columbia, Argentina, and Uruguay!
Surprised he didn’t mention Bolivia, definitely the most indigenous country with the most varied original cultures, also probably the cheapest too imo! Also Guatemala is very varied also, lots of historical sites to see and the beautiful Lake Atitlan. I’ve been to Africa too, Gambia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Morocco and the island of Madagascar, all very different and unique!

I took a drive from Panama City to Boquete in 1989 when an Army civilian. I found it very pretty and the people nice, but if you do not like rain and mountain mists I woulld not advise living there, visit and check it out first. There is a reason it is the land of rainbows, good video.
After reading your comment, I Googled the annual rainfall of Panama and was astonished to find it was 12 "FEET" per year. Not for me. Let me be more specific the annual precipitation ranged from 70 inches on the coast to 200 inches (16 feet) in Boquette.

No mention of Cambodia and Thailand, both are a lot cheaper to live than any of the countries he mentioned. My apartment in Thailand had air con and it was 3,000 baht per month. My hotel in Siem Reap, Cambodia was $9/night. It was very nice!

This man is knowledgeable and interesting... this should be a part 1. I think he has so much more to add... please do some more interviewing with him Dan... he didn't recommend Mexico, why? He still wants to see 20 more countries, what are they? Any travel regrets? Any countries he wouldn't visit again? What are some of his best travel memories? What do expats do that is wrong when they go into a new country? This guy is a walking encyclopedia, I want to hear more.

By the way, I noticed transportation cost can be something to take notice while living the retirement lifestyle. Wow! What an interesting guy. Lots of great information. I only know Boquete from hearing of all the people who has been murdered and or gone missing. Was wondering if you had any conversation about that with him to get his valuable input? The 2 dutch girls from 2014 is a famous case there.
That case is the only one I know about. Yes, Qiang asked Gil about it because she read it online. Turns out women were murdered in other countries in 2014 also. Here is what I told Qiang. @@VagabondAwake i certainly would agree with that statistic. The case of those 2 missing girls have always captivated me and more and more evidence has come forward that foul play was involved. Im not saying Panama is not safe place to visit or retire too but if you are a young woman travelling alone i would be very cautious
1000 dollars or euros every month, but it has to be enough to pay the rent. 30,000 pesos for cold rent is not enough. Electricity and drinking water also cost money. In Germany this high rent is in pesos, including drinking water.

@@VagabondAwake it’s possible far away from the beaches and not that nice neighborhood. Otherwise rent is about $30.000 pesos for an small 1 bedroom Apartments. In Uruguay you also need 6 months deposit in advanced to rent. Food price is same as USA. Electronics, accessories, shoes clothing double the price compared to USA. Owning a car very expensive (plates, taxes, insurance) and price of gas is 4x more than USA. Can you live with $1000 a month? yes, but you are not going to be able to afford a lot of things, just the basics. I have an old friend, we went to college together she was working for the government and making 2k a month and left the country on 2020 because money wasn't enough, she and her daughters had a simple life, no car no expensive housing.
Each to their own. Not a single mention of Ecuador and one of the most popular Expat destinations in South America, Cuenca, which is also an Internationally acclaimed Colonial City. Very affordable! Also not mentioned is the most prosperous country in Latin America, Chile. Santiago may be right up there with Buenos Aires and Rio for being most cosmopolitan. I can understand why no mention of Brazil. Columbia and especially Argentina are not safe places to live, but they are affordable. Lots of petty crime! Places in Medellin centro might be good, plus Medellin has the best hospitals in Latin America. Good that you're talking up the wonderful people of Latin America who work to live, whereas in the U.S. you live to work. It's nice to live where people know how to live life. I was thinking about Ecuador as well. Montañita, Ecuador is a nice little beach town. Viña Del Mar, Chile is a costal town with a Mediterranean climate. Very beautiful.
I'm Filipino and came from the Philippines the province of Negro's Oriental. Valencia and San Jose a lot of foreigners lived there and it's not expensive just a saying.

WOW!, WOW!, WOW! GREAT video! I loved it. I love Philippines! and I love Colombia and am an Expat in Colombia, but it is a difficult place to live not being able to speak Spanish...I think Panama is my next home.
There is a little more English spoken in Panama than Colombia, but it will be a more interesting life if you start picking up some Spanish. :-) Nothing you didn't know already since you live there. :-)
Nothing is more rewarding then learning the language to some degree in the country you're traveling to and speaking to locals. I did it in France and the people were much more open once I did it.
Then, why is there more than 1.5 million US citizens retired in Mexico? Could it be because of the gastronomy, culture, beaches, magic towns, inexpensive, nearness? Yes I know that many think it’s dangerous, and it is for the people that don’t mind their own business, it’s no more dangerous than Houston or Detroit, or New York, Chicago, St. Louis or LA . Many will attest to that.

Argentina can be today cheap tomorrow very expensive. Also you will have issues TT money, security, etc. It should be a reason why wealthy Argentinias are getting away from his own country to Uruguay, even if it is very expensive in comparison with Argentina.
How about Ecuador, he said nothing about it, and I would like to hear what he thinks, as a world traveler, about the mountain towns and the coastal cities.

But that doesn't mean that every 2nd Filipino has a job and everybody gets 20,000 pesos a month. He doesn't get a pension so much that he can live from it.
I love Cuenca. But everyone that has traveled as much as Gil has their favorites. If they speak Spanish well like Gil, their favorites are less likely to be dependent on being around a bunch of other expats.

Yes. travelers are interesting people. They know life can be lived one hundred different ways so they don't get upset or even bother to correct people much when other people tell them there is only one way. It is a very laid back international view of the world.

Great interview! I was in Boquete when Covid hit March 2020. They gave tourists 48 hours to get out before they shut down the airports for the next six months. Panama had one of the strictest lockdowns in the world. I tried to get my pensionada visa but my fingerprints are worn off so it was impossible.
It was very easy to get permanent residency in Mexico. I would love to visit Columbia, Argentina, and Uruguay!
That's an important factor for some of us who are interested in having less government intrusion rather than more, thank you for the information.
If you live in the USA you can easily visit Columbia, the capital of the state of South Carolina.

Surprised he didn’t mention Bolivia, definitely the most indigenous country with the most varied original cultures, also probably the cheapest too imo! Also Guatemala is very varied also, lots of historical sites to see and the beautiful Lake Atitlan. I’ve been to Africa too, Gambia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Morocco and the island of Madagascar, all very different and unique!

I took a drive from Panama City to Boquete in 1989 when an Army civilian. I found it very pretty and the people nice, but if you do not like rain and mountain mists I woulld not advise living there, visit and check it out first. There is a reason it is the land of rainbows, good video.
After reading your comment, I Googled the annual rainfall of Panama and was astonished to find it was 12 "FEET" per year. Not for me. Let me be more specific the annual precipitation ranged from 70 inches on the coast to 200 inches (16 feet) in Boquette.

No mention of Cambodia and Thailand, both are a lot cheaper to live than any of the countries he mentioned. My apartment in Thailand had air con and it was 3,000 baht per month. My hotel in Siem Reap, Cambodia was $9/night. It was very nice!

This man is knowledgeable and interesting... this should be a part 1. I think he has so much more to add... please do some more interviewing with him Dan... he didn't recommend Mexico, why? He still wants to see 20 more countries, what are they? Any travel regrets? Any countries he wouldn't visit again? What are some of his best travel memories? What do expats do that is wrong when they go into a new country? This guy is a walking encyclopedia, I want to hear more.

Wow! What an interesting guy. Lots of great information. I only know Boquete from hearing of all the people who has been murdered and or gone missing. Was wondering if you had any conversation about that with him to get his valuable input? The 2 dutch girls from 2014 is a famous case there.
That case is the only one I know about. Yes, Qiang asked Gil about it because she read it online. Turns out women were murdered in other countries in 2014 also. Here is what I told Qiang. @@VagabondAwake i certainly would agree with that statistic. The case of those 2 missing girls have always captivated me and more and more evidence has come forward that foul play was involved. Im not saying Panama is not safe place to visit or retire too but if you are a young woman travelling alone i would be very cautious

In Germany this high rent is in pesos, including drinking water.

@@VagabondAwake it’s possible far away from the beaches and not that nice neighborhood. Otherwise rent is about $30.000 pesos for an small 1 bedroom Apartments. In Uruguay you also need 6 months deposit in advanced to rent. Food price is same as USA. Electronics, accessories, shoes clothing double the price compared to USA. Owning a car very expensive (plates, taxes, insurance) and price of gas is 4x more than USA. Can you live with $1000 a month? yes, but you are not going to be able to afford a lot of things, just the basics. I have an old friend, we went to college together she was working for the government and making 2k a month and left the country on 2020 because money wasn't enough, she and her daughters had a simple life, no car no expensive housing.

Each to their own. Not a single mention of Ecuador and one of the most popular Expat destinations in South America, Cuenca, which is also an Internationally acclaimed Colonial City. Very affordable! Also not mentioned is the most prosperous country in Latin America, Chile. Santiago may be right up there with Buenos Aires and Rio for being most cosmopolitan. I can understand why no mention of Brazil. Columbia and especially Argentina are not safe places to live, but they are affordable. Lots of petty crime! Places in Medellin centro might be good, plus Medellin has the best hospitals in Latin America. Good that you're talking up the wonderful people of Latin America who work to live, whereas in the U.S. you live to work. It's nice to live where people know how to live life. Viña Del Mar, Chile is a costal town with a Mediterranean climate. Very beautiful.

WOW!, WOW!, WOW! GREAT video! I loved it. I love Philippines! and I love Colombia and am an Expat in Colombia, but it is a difficult place to live not being able to speak Spanish...I think Panama is my next home.

There is a little more English spoken in Panama than Colombia, but it will be a more interesting life if you start picking up some Spanish. :-) Nothing you didn't know already since you live there. :-)
Nothing is more rewarding then learning the language to some degree in the country you're traveling to and speaking to locals. I did it in France and the people were much more open once I did it.
Then, why is there more than 1.5 million US citizens retired in Mexico? Could it be because of the gastronomy, culture, beaches, magic towns, inexpensive, nearness? Yes I know that many think it’s dangerous, and it is for the people that don’t mind their own business, it’s no more dangerous than Houston or Detroit, or New York, Chicago, St. Louis or LA . Many will attest to that.

Argentina can be today cheap tomorrow very expensive. Also you will have issues TT money, security, etc. It should be a reason why wealthy Argentinias are getting away from his own country to Uruguay, even if it is very expensive in comparison with Argentina.

I love Cuenca. But everyone that has traveled as much as Gil has their favorites. If they speak Spanish well like Gil, their favorites are less likely to be dependent on being around a bunch of other expats.

Does Panama have any quarantine for incoming foreigners, I’ve been looking around in case Philippines put USA on the red lists in the next 2 1/2 weeks it would be a disaster for us since we pretty much have sold everything house and everything in it , my wife’s last day at her job is today, would Panama be a country to switch to on the fly ?
You could do dominican republic or Mexico temporarily at least. I don't think they care much about covid and don't do quarantine
