Call me crazy but this actually the 1st time I've seen nothing but positive comments on anyone's video. Almost everything that was said on here crossed my mind one way or another. This is the 1st outdoor video I've seen with positive attitude despite setbacks, all for the love of nature. I'm Loving the vibe of everyone.

I love watching your videos (ASMR) and highly instructional. I have a Fishing tip for you all (especially Xander). When you're ready to fish with either live bait or with lures, it's always smart to wash your hands with Lake water, then; you need to rub your hands in any grass, dirt, mud, or seaweed you can find (just like you did with the dirt at the 21:10 mark in this video. When you're handling a lot of different things, it's important to realize that fish are all about Sight, Sound, and Scent. It is your scent on the lures that can easily dissuade the fish from being attracted. Great Video !!!

As a suggestion you should always carry a handline setup in your pack. If your pole breaks you always have a backup. It weighs basically nothing and doesn't take up any space bro.

I noticed you said, "ever since I quit drugs and alcohol"-firstly, well done ! Secondly, I am watching this just finishing off my taper on subutex (an opiate substitute like methadone) and it is really helping me pull through. I am three years without booze now and the opiates are the final thing to stop. I love the outdoors so much and cannot wait to get back out there. All the best from the UK.

I'm really glad to see you advancing into hunting content. It's definitely a crucial skill in the quest to become a well-rounded outdoors man. The appeal of traditional bow hunting over other forms of hunting to me is the fact that you need to become one with the land in order to find success. You're not just sitting in a tree shooting at animals 50-100 yards away, or blasting away into the air with a shotgun until you hit something. No disrespect to those forms of hunting, which still require great skill in their own right, but the ceiling for personal growth is so much higher with traditional forms of hunting.

Love the video! It’s refreshing to see someone be so authentic in their learning and growth. Idk what your skill level and experience is so this may be advice, or it might be something you already know.. the telescoping poles are a great option, slide a rubber boot over the eyes and you’re protected. Also, when cooking trout, you can make a small rock channel for the smoke flow over the trout. It takes a lil bit longer but you will garner more nutrients and a significant increase in fatty acids. Not a judgement, I bet it was nice and tasty the way you did it, I just want to see people like you master the craft and inspire others.

That fuzzy little mushroom is a Hedgehog and they're actually quite yummy. I think the 1st ones you found were false chanterelles - you can tell that by them growing in singles or very small groupings and also when the ridges don't go down the majority of the stem. Glad you didn't eat them because you might have gotten sick! I appreciate your innovation and perseverance because that was a beautiful fish! Thanks for the content, Xander. It never disappoints!

I just know the false ones often grow by themselves or in very small groupings and don't have the ridges all the way down the stipe. I had a mom and daughter who came into my ER who had eaten several of them and both ended up in ICU; mom for 2 nights, daughter just one.

Yeah definitely winter chanterelle - it's the mushroom I pick the most myself. And they're honestly hard to mistake for something else except other edible mushrooms. I've read about people mistaking it for deadly webcap (!) but I'm note sure how. Carelessness I guess.
Also the false chanterelle is reminiscent of the regular chanterelle, but not winter chanterelle which has a distinctively different look.

Definitely right to dump the orange jacket. It spooked those fishies. I kept fancy fish and bought them a fake orange tree for the tank. The fish were so upset they stopped feeding and hid from it.

Just some helpful tips for people watching. In a survival situation you want to conserve as many calories as possible. Wearing a backpack while fishing is useless calorie expenditure and increases your chances of getting injured which can easily be fatal when you’re alone.
Another thing to be careful of is when you’re sleeping in caves or under rocks and you want a fire, you NEED to slowly heat the rock before you create a large fire. If you make your fire too fast the rocks can crack and kill you in your sleep!
Finally. If you managed to get some of your socks wet (or any smaller clothing items) if you put the wet socks in your sleeping bag your body heat will dry them out overnight. A water bottle with warm water will also help keep you warm in a sleeping bag when it gets super cold!

You know wearing bright orange is fine when you're hunting because I've heard that deer can't see the orange. Fish can though. Fish see bright orange. They hear you move and drop stuff on the rocks. You actually have to sneak up on fish unless you're in a noisy river with limited visibility range. Fish in a quiet clear lake are the hardest to catch. If you can't move in quietly, stoop down in the brush or amongst the rocks and wait five minutes before casting because fish have the attention span of a cat. They'll forget they saw you come up. Also, lures aren't always effective.

Xander keep up the great work. I’m a new subscriber and really enjoy your uploads. I used to be a follower of Joe Robinet, for years, but he has lost his way on bushcraft, basic survival etc content. Now I see him camping in trailers, using quads etc. Not what I’m after. Your content is exactly what I’m looking for. Thank you.

Really enjoying your videos. I just came across your channel recently after being a big Joe Robinet fan for years. I appreciate the authenticity and the fact you're really out there doing it for all of us to see, successes and failures alike. Some channels out there stage stuff and half their advice would get someone killed in a real survival situation.

You need to start investing in a folding net. They fit in a bag easily, can extend 5ft or so, and will save you a lot of lost fish and stop you from slipping off edges all the time and make fish retrieval much safer and less traumatic for the fish.

Xander, the fish you caught was a very nice sized Brook Trout in Fall spawning dress. The only other fish with ruby red spots with blue rings is the related Dolly Varden Char, but I don't believe they are stocked in Ontario. That was a fine fish with beautiful markings. A trophy Brookie is any fish longer than 23 inches. Congrats!

Wow that was an incredible haul on what looked like lingonberries. On the cabin wall joints I would have made some calipers, to trace the shape onto the following log.
But you definitely did well especially with a nice sharp axe. Couple of times you stopped looked around said nothing but look was wtf am I doing, in total a great effort well done.
