Replacing A Stone: Why you NEED to have your ring inspected!

  • If you don't get your ring inspected annually, you run the risk of needing big repairs down the road. In this case the tips on this 14KT yellow gold ring had worn down completely and the stone fell out. Here is this video I show the process of retipping the ring and replacing the missing stone.

    Interesting to see this video. A little story...2 weeks before Christmas last year (2020) I decorated my Christmas tree. The next morning I noticed the diamond from my engagement ring was missing! 😳 I searched the bed, checked the U-bends in all the sinks, vacuumed all the floors, but nothing. Then one night I remembered that I had decorated the Christmas tree the night before I had lost it and maybe, just maybe, the diamond got caught in the tree! I couldn’t wait to dismantle the tree and see if it was there, so as soon as New Year’s celebrations were over on New Year’s Day 2021 I dismantled the tree and shook it and shook it but nothing. I was sooo disappointed. I was just about to give up so I gave the tree one last massive shake and just like magic the diamond fell out!! I couldn’t believe my eyes!!! I’ve now had the diamond set back into my engagement ring and it looks brand new as the jeweller gave it a lovely clean and polish too💍👍🏼

    After I inherited two platinum rings from the late aunt of my boyfriend we had them revised and repaired. Some of the stones were missing on one of them and it was bend. The other one just needed a good clean and maintenance. We have already decided that one of them is going to be my engagement ring whenever the bf is ready to pop the question😂💍😉❤️

    How many rings do you find that the customer thinks has a diamond, but the stone is really something different (like Moissanite, CZ, etc)? Also, how do you feel about emeralds? I used to live in the Caribbean, and there emeralds are considered a real investment because they never lose their value - and, people even use them as currency for major purchases (usually those 'under the table' kind of purchases)... Lastly, how do you feel about opals? I've always taken great care of mine and had worn them only infrequently and for mere hours at a time, but all of them have wound up cracking.

    ...and if you do happen to lose your stone, make sure that BEFORE you lose it you INSURE it! Insurance is a very small price to pay (maybe $10-13 per month). I lost a large pink sapphire and it was replaced immediately. The replacement cost was over $3,000 just for the stone. So when I looked down and saw a huge hole where the stone should have been, I didn't panic. Just called the insurance company.

    Hi I saw that your open to some questions. I’m on here looking for a answer to a ring I just bought. It has a very delicate setting and I noticed it has jeweler’s glue all around the stone just below the girdle and under it’s prongs. I’m not mush for getting out to the jewelry repair place and I sure don’t want to pay extra just after buying the ring online. Can you tell me how I can remove the glue? I gather a fine topped craft craft knife? And possibly nail polish remover is safe for sapphires? And 18k gold. Thanks for being open to answer questions and being a down to earth guy that I can feel comfortable asking. 😁👍🏻

    • @moderngoldsmith
      @moderngoldsmith  3 роки тому +1

      Hi! I would not do anything to the ring without contacting the place you bought it from...jewelers "glue" should never be used to set a stone properly unless it is a piece of costume jewelry. But to answer your question, yes I usually use something like acetone to dissolve glue. Of course you want to make sure the materials you are applying the acetone to can handle it first!

    • @gigisdiamonds
      @gigisdiamonds 3 роки тому +1

      Modern Goldsmith Thank you for the sound advice. I bought it on eBay where I’ve always done pretty well considering it’s a gamble. I have asked the seller and while she/ he has been very well spoken and courteous. It’s obviously something they didn’t want to address. I asked about the his of the ring and my guess is they came by this ring as possibly a estate sell. It’s a very delicate setting of 18k and nothing but a simple cage like head. I bought it because the person selling seems straight forward enough and I know I have a way out of it isn’t what it’s claimed to be. But I do like it as is. But there’s no way I could live with the glue holding it like it is. I saw last night a man testing stone to see if they were real by soaking them in acetone. 😳🤯😱 Draining color out within a hour and soaking them over night on top of it. They were real rubies. But treated with coloring. I would never be so foolish as to do any drastic like that. I’m going to see what I can do myself with a craft knife and a little Super glue remover. And if I can stop by the jewelry repair shop I go to. To see what they would do to remover it. But I might just be the best. Because it’s mine and I will go gentle at it. Till I know what it is I won’t use it in a ultrasonic cleaner either. Thanks for your prompt reply. I wish I could post a pic here but it’s not FB. 😉

    This ring is very similar to those Soviet ones with lab sapphires.

      He did a video about this topic about how he became a goldsmith and I think he mentioned in a comment he made this song with a friend. It says in the credits Trembley/Mantzke
