  • This time on American Viscountess, Julie visits the magnificent Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire. It’s everything you want a medieval castle to be - a fortress, with the keep, the oldest surviving part of the castle, at its heart. Berkeley Castle has been home to the same family for nearly 900 years - and within its walls, a King of England was imprisoned and murdered in 1327. Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, will will be delving into the archives, meeting the Berkeley family and exploring the restoration and redevelopment projects out on the Berkeley estate.
From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

You have an American here who would love to bring all her cats and move to the UK country side. My grandfather actually immigrated from Scotland. We heard so many wonderful stories. I'm 79, but perhaps a visit still is worth dreaming. For now I shall enjoy through you. God Bless. 🌹🇺🇸

As an American, history love both US and UK, it is so refreshing to see how much you love and care for your adopted country. I love the enthusiasm you have - the American in you shines through - you can take the girl out of the US but you can’t take the US out of the girl. 😅This was a fantastic episode. Such a treasure. Happy holidays from Alexandria, VA.

I’m really enjoying this! The Viscountess is so charming and affable. As someone who has studied the monarchy for many years, when I think of Berkeley Castle, I think mainly of Edward II. But this place has so much more history than the death of a king, and the urban legend that surrounds it. There’s also more Tudor history than I expected. I’d love to see more like this!

She just needs to stop bringing up her husband’s family as it were her bloodline. The videos are amazing and very informative, but I wish she would just listen, educate and bring the history to us as she is doing. Please just stop saying “my family”

I just had to leave a comment (I normally don’t)….
I could actually FEEL the emotions as he described what it was like growing up with his brother in the castle..”jumping out when visitors were going through “ and “his mother ringing the bell for lunch “ and 2 young children running after playing “soldiers” on the roof….
    Magical! Absolutely magical!!
I’m still smiling thinking about these little boys having a blast playing ❤️.
Just didn’t expect to connect on such an emotional level when watching.
Thank you for making my day a little brighter. I’m so grateful I watched as having my coffee as I’ll think of them throughout my day and my heart will be happy 💕

A wonderful tour of a wonderful place! The video title caught my attention as, having a long time interest in English history, I knew the king was Edward II. So I was so interested to see the room where his story happened. But the castle and the estate is so much more than just that one story. The whole visit was fascinating! I was especially excited to see the muniments room and was thrilled to see the historic documents. If I had access to that room, that is where I would definitely spend most of my time! 🏰

As I watch, it's never been more obvious to me that my family are engaged in mafia crime. We are related to the Royal family. We used to live in castles. We had Carew Castle in Wales, on my mother's side. My grandfather John Boulton was a judge at Boulton Grange in Quebec, Canada. We live in the most horrid little house now. My father goes through and ruins everything. He throws first all over, smashes paint off the walls, drips goop on the carpets and crams garbage in every corner. My Dad is trying to force me to commit a felony. He ruins everything I do. When confronted, he lies. His father is from the German Royals. There's no honest excuse for the way we live now.

Edward 111 would not have allowed the murder of his father .It was a set up and Berclay did leave castle but sent letter to King saying his father was dead. I think it was the sign his father had sailed as King placed a Silver ship of the tomb of his father .Suggests to me it was his way of saying his father was already in France

I have found out that I have a very long line of Berkeleys in my ancestries, they are one of the three families that being powerful in the Anglo-Saxon kingdom remained poweful after the Norman Conquest, the curious part of this family when they made a study of the direct study of DNA of the Lords that fighted
in the battle of Bannockburn they found that the oldest Berkeley went from Spain and that person went
from South to North ??? ? about this are many hypothesis

Fascinating episode - the archives are amazing. The history of it all. Though Charles's wife seems very resistant to becoming part of it. They surely would not be the first owners of a country home or castle who have pets and animals living with them. I mean, it's fine not to want that life, it's a huge commitment. But she was noticeably the one who had a lot of reasons to keep a physical, professional and probably emotional distance to the place.

So, I have to ask as I am very much wanting to know was he REALLY the last Earl or is the man (son) we met early in the video still an Earl? You see, I don't understand how that works. You would think his mother and he would still have some kind of title, but of course, I am American and only 4th generation from Czechoslovakia. One part of the family came over in the early 1800s and Great Grandpa Bartunek fought for the North in the Civil War because he spoke in a foreign language or he would have to sit in prison until the war was over as no one knew if he was a spy or not so he agreed to serve for the North Army and then settled in Nebraska with a large ground for a homestead farm. My mother's mother was his daughter. Last born to his family. But I do want to share with you that he must have had some money as this was his second time overseas to the Americans. He came before, younger, and was not so keen on the place, but decided later to come back. I suppose it was due to the fact that Nebraska was selling homesteads with large parcels of land and that interested him into trying America once more. His wife was in the South and she and a brother came with Great Grandpa to Nebraska. Great Grandpa Bartunek first came over in the area of New York and then the second time came from New Orleans Bay and then up into the continent. His trunk is still in the family. It made it across the seas twice. One of my aunts has it, my mother's sister.
