Oh my God! I am just now learning who Gary Moore is because of this video. Thank you. I don't know how it is possible I never heard of him. It is like waking up and finding out you never heard of SRV. What a player, what feel he had. I'm watching some of his performances here and I just can't believe what an amazing player he was.
That's because he's more known in Europe for his modern Blues guitar solos and playing, he started out playing rock, and later got back to his roots being influenced by blues guitarist in America, but in the US only those who love blues guitar and music know of him, therefore, only a handful of people ever heard of him. Anybody that plays blues guitar or listens to blues music will tell you they know his music, if you know Joe Bonomassa you'll hear Gary Moores influence on his guitar playing.
"If 100 guys play this, this first bit, this melody, they're all gonna sound different. Some will sound really good, really emotive, and like right on the money, and you'll get a feeling from it. And other guys will just sound like a dying cat, ya know? Because it just not happening, they'll be sharp they'll be flat, whatever." Really wish I could say I am apart of the former, but sadly I'm apart of the latter, haha. Great tutorial and playing as always.
Andy’s money shot on this tutorial is 7:55 - 12:10. The whole tutorial is worth watching because, well, it’s Andy; his wealth of knowledge and his presentations are beautiful. But I’ve watched this video so many dang times you’d think I could play that speed lick already; but NOOOooo! My arthritic old hands remind me they suck every time I try to do that portion of the solo. The crazy part is - it’s Box 1.....A minor Pentatonic! How many times have we practiced that bloody box to warm up or or dropped into it because we think of anything else to improvise and here Andy lays it out so plainly for us?! Thank you, Andy. God bless you, mate!
I got into a rut a few years ago and hung the strat on the wall. After hearing you on utibe ive got right back into it polishing up my technique basically relearning a few old standards from you ive now gone on and got back playing live with a new band. Shut up and play saved my musical life your an awsome guitarist. Thankyou i owe you big time.
Man, your description on Gary’s solo is perfect, you have the perfect tone, exactly as Gary and man, you teaching of the solo , is a user friendly and I really do like it. You did a perfect job of breaking it up for slow learners like myself. Thank you 😊
I ran across you about a year ago. I watched about a dozen of your videos. I can say with great confidence,YOU have the BEST "Ear" of all on UA-cam. As we used to say when we heard an exceptional talent ,like yourself ( We hardly ever "saw" Those great players back then ) YOU'VE GOT IT ! YOU are the best copy cat player I have ever had the pleasure of watching work. YOU are doing a great service to the kids who also have GOT IT . Thank you for being so generous. :-) oh yes, I Subscribed .
This guy's lessons are fantastic. Not too slow, and not too fast. He covers all aspects of getting "the sound" the original artist left for us. Kudos. One simple question: what gauge strings are you using? Your bends are flawless. We all need to take note! Many thanks!!
This is AWESOME! I actually learned the majority of this tune from one or two other UA-camrs, and came across your video only now, and I am using this vid to focus on (as you said) the fast part of the first, shorter solo. Most of the guitar teachers don't do "old school" lessons like you, where they talk you through the entire song and solos, breaking it down verbally into small, more digestible chunks. Now I am kind of wishing I found this video before already getting the second solo down. lol I have become accustomed to what a lot of the other teachers on here do, which is to SLOW the song down a lot, to make it easier to self-learn, and they also accompany it with real-time tab. To be honest, I am really digging your more "in-person guitar teacher" approach, because it actually makes the harder parts much easier to learn. I also understand why some of the teachers do it the other way, and in some ways it is easier, but for my style of playing and learning, I won't lie; I prefer your way. If you respond, and want to talk about it more, I will explain why. Although, I do understand why some teachers go the Slo-mo teaching with tabs, and no audio commentary. I think that a lot of them know that a huge chunk of their audiences don't speak their native language, and so their way, for them, makes it much easier for a lot of students. One guy in particular I learned the Lukather version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps from, and he is from Italy, and speaks broken English, so his way worked probably better for me than if he had done it your way. Sorry for such a long post, but I wanted to THANK YOU in detail, and not just fire off some one-line, off handed response to the AMAZING job you did.
I remember the first time I heard this song on a dvd I got with a guitar magazine, at the time I was all over guns and roses with slash but Gary Moore took my breath away! He is/was and will be the best guitarist of all time in my opinion, he was so gifted and like you say, he plays with soul... A lot like Prince does who's another great guitarist....... Jesus imagine a mash up of still got the blues and purple rain... 🤔
@@andre.1984 I don't think he's overrated I think he's just been made into a cash making machine... Cause he knows his shit on the guitar no doubt about that! But it's like Ronaldo... He's a great footballer but he's just used to sell the games, merchandise and shirts etc, a money making machineand there is other big personalities you can do the same thing for and I think slash is the same... Even his name is like a brand than someone you actually think is a great guitarist.
I'm a guitarist that has instilled myself with using all 4 fingers. I see a lot of blues players, especially Clapton neglect his pinky. One of my influences is Steve Howe. I can stretch pretty good. I was watching a Michael Schenker improvised bunch of solos done on the spot during an interview. At times in a pentatonic position he uses his index finger and middle finger a whole step apart. And as he moves to the B and E string. He'll use his third finger 2 whole steps apart or if you like? I can say 4 frets apart. I can see what it does when applying a fast hard attack. But I'm getting back into the swing of things and from what I recall, I can get the same results with my pinky. But I will try both and if I think the Schenker attack comes across with more ferocity? Than I will try implementing that technique at certain times as long as I keep using my pinky like I said before. In other words, I still want to apply my pinky as in using all of my fingers as a general rule. When I was jamming with a progressive bass player one night way back when. Just me on guitar and him on bass. We improvised some Jazz type fusion. I didn't know he had a metronome on and after about 5 minutes of us playing, we stopped. And he's heard me shred with the right player's before. He said "That's pretty good. "You averaged around 160 notes a minute. I was like, WHOA! THAT'S 2 AND A HALF NOTES A SECOND! But not everything is about speed.
Oh get the frock out 😢 Dang it thank you for being such a big enormous hearted individual to grace us with your incomparable and amazing tutorial prop's and kudos to you.
you are a stellar teacher. in addition to teaching well, you instill the fact that note for note reproduction is not necessarily the best idea. much more important to get the feel and the theory behind the solo or song. thanks yet again.
Just discovered this. I love the fact that you actually explain the music behind it as opposed to just doing another useless put your finger there tutorial. Keep rocking dude, you're awesome!
Hey I just wanna let you know that you are the best guitar teacher I've ever came across on UA-cam. You are absolutely phenomenal. You're videos sound EXACTLY like the song. You taught me how to play a ton of the songs I love. I honestly don't understand why anyone would dislike your videos. They are amazing. Thank you for teaching me how to play great songs
Just saw Moore's playing this at 1997 Montreux Festival and my first thought was I bet Andy could play and teach this. That would be fun with the bending and vibrato techniques that create such feel. Lo and behold, starting the day off well. New project...Saying thanks to you is getting repetitive but you really are appreciated. Great teaching.
This was one of the enabling lessons I've ever experienced. Thank you for that. Your rendition and explanation for Black Magic Woman & Hotel California were equally helpful.
This song has always reminded me of Santana's Europa, in tone and feel. Both great songs with great playing. Prime examples it's not the notes you play but how you play them.
EclecticHillbilly Yeah the two songs have a very similar chord progression. You nailed it, it's HOW you play the notes that's more important than the notes themselves. cheers
FINALLY...Someone who can play this tune and get the tone right all at the same time. In an interview Gary Moore said one of the reasons he chose to play the guitar was that it allowed him to express in a style that an instrument like the keyboard would not allow. Shut up and play pointed out by showing how "Still Got The Blues" would sound on an instrument without the advantage of bends, vibrato, etc. Really great job. One question..What did you do to get that great tone? Joe B.
Outstanding tutorial - your description of Gary being so emotive - melodic and yet blistering is spot on. I have always thought of him as being a mixture of the melodic beauty of Carlos Santana and shred of early Eddie Van Halen. Blister he can - on some of his earlier albums, I am not sure I have ever heard such astounding speed.
Great lesson! Gary moore is a truly legend. It looks like all the legends die early though. But an another great song of him is reach for the sky..There are no any lessons or covers from it. Mabey you can make a lesson of it? That would be great ;)
AWESOME tutorial, as usual ! WOW I never knew Gary Moore often used only 2 fingers. Due to an old injury in which nerves in my pinky and ring finger were damaged causing them to cramp up when stressed, although I always wished I could, I never thought I'd be able to learn how to play guitar. The pinky is real bad and practically useless. The ring finger is a little bit better depending on the angle and intensity. 8 years ago, when I turned 50, after seeing a very inspiring Django Reinhardt documentary, I decided to try and see how far I could get with my handicap and started following You Tube beginners lessons. Any time I'd cross chords, riffs or other techniques that caused me problems I'd try and figure out mostly 2 finger solutions and/or other ways that spare my, pinky and ring finger. For example can't play barre chords so I developed a variation of Hendrix style chords in which I fret 2 strings (A and D ) both with my ring finger. Hardly ever use the low E but if necessary I'll play it with my thumb. When I show my chord technique to other guitarists they always look at me as if I escaped from area 51 lol. But it works for me ! I would never dare say I'm a great guitar player but after many many hours of practice I started to be able to manage pretty well, even to the degree that I could join a band, which is a lot of fun. And a few years ( and hundreds of hours practice ) after that I even started my own Santana Tribute band in which I play lead. So I'm playing Carlos's solo's mostly with 2 fingers lol. The moral of the story is : if you REALLY REALLY want to learn how to play, just DO IT ! Practice hard and never give up ! And like Andy here says, don't worry if you develop you're own personal techniques, hacks and shortcuts. IF IT WORKS IT WORKS. You may not become a Steve Vai 2.0.......but you still can have great fun !
Your lessons are just brilliant and your tone and ability...wow! I think part of Gary Moore`s uniqueness comes partly from the fact he was left-handed and yet taught himself to play right-handed.
I enjoy your tutorials, and the fact that you sometimes can't "put it in words"... *feel* is always the biggest part, rather than technicality. Keep up the good work. I've often found that watching the original guitar player gives me more insights that any "TAB" or explanations, and I try to inhabit the way that the original was expressed. Whilst it can be fun, or a challenge, to exactly reproduce a part, sometimes mimicking the groove is more honest and communicative. But I'm not going left-handed to play Jimi .... ;-)
+Gary Kurzer Thanks Gary, It's all about feel really. After I learn the notes, I spend a lot of time time trying to cop the feel of the part. The timing and the groove are always the hardest things to get down. You make great points here. cheers
Great Lesson shutup. Love the chit chat. I find it actually helps the lesson process and its great to hear your thoughts on players and their technique. I always like it when you say "some people play it like this but I hear it like that!" You know what I wish you would do is a clip showing you learning a song you don't know and your approach to breaking down a solo you don't know yet. Maybe a clip showing where the vids are made and your actual phsyical equipment set up, etc. You are in San Diego, right? You are simply the best at doing this stuff on UA-cam.
Another great lesson there from you, by a guitar hero of mine , Gary Moore R.I.P , but i was completely distracted by your broken pickup surround on your Les Paul. It was playing havoc with my OCD hahahahaha . Great job bro! Gary Moore's style is by no means easy to emulate but you did a good job breaking it down. Keep up the great work budd!
Compliments on your playing. Some of the best, most articulate and accurate renditions of any on the net. Seriously. I have a request (challenge). Could you get around to providing a lesson for The Doors 'Spanish Caravan' - with all all the parts? Would really like to learn this and you are probably one of the few players that could do this justice. BTW, saw the doors live once. One of the best bands to ever hit a stage. Thanks for all your great lessons. I am sure others would agree that we learn a lot from your playing. Keep Rockin'...
Benj Coltrane Thanks Benj. I know I'm always going to get some thumbs down, but I have to tell you that every one hurts a little! Thanks for watching bro. cheersr
I love this tune and guitar work. And playing it right indeed is a matter of bendings - up bendings, down bendings, full, half, 3 half etc - and vibrato use. Gary was a very master of these techniques, and he had a very own style of this techniques. Also, I never saw a guitar player making such heavy use of the middle finger, stretching it very vary. On contrary, ,most players primarily use first and ring finger.
Thanks so much for offering patience and great techniques. I'm an old 60s-70s musician starting over again--a bit long in the tooth. Appreciate your help. Wanted to post to my FB 'musicians corner #2' for others to see and hear... AGAIN THANK YOU!
Gary had an incredible touch when he played he put 100% of his heart and soul into ieach Note the listner was always left in awe.every time. You know we he got to heaven first thing saId was ....Well done Gary..
great lesson! just starting a couplet months on guitar and getting the hang of my bends (on pitch +half and whole step) and vibrato. would like to learn this song as a kind of measuring tool to see how wel it's going my progress (and because this song is frigging awesome). just wondering what kind of set up you used and or pedals. thanks in advanve
Very nice and fairly easy to follow. I have the same exact wine color LP it's a pro 11 standard 2012. Definitely my favorite ax next to my '77 custom. Ok now I'm showing off lol thanks!
Nice tutorial wow! I couldn't believe I could play it but I did and it sounded great, I Hooked up my Jazzmaster and I cranked up my line six amp about half way with a ton of Delay and tap echo then turned the volume lower on my JM and it sounds freakin awesome ! Thanks for the Lesson.
I saw this vid I I was like "damn, didn't hear that in a long time". And then I heard your presentation and like the first 5 notes and got the rest (except the fast part) from memory. And it really isn't hard to play if you how its supposed to sound. I'm never like "i need to get a D out of this bending", I'm like "just a little higher, aaaah, thats perfect". I play in a way it sounds right to me and dont really care if its 100% accurate.
And I thought that I would mention the people who were and still influence my playing. Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson, Michael Schenker, Al Di Meola, Rik Emmett, Trevor Rabin, ? Guitarists that didn't usually use vibrato bars. Oh and I like Randy Rhoads and Zakk Wylde. They didn't really use vibrato bars either. I don't think they've used them at all. On the song "Over the Mountain. Rhoads is playing his Les Paul and pulling off the string and with his right hand reaching behind his left and pulling up and down on the string while he's doing the pull off with his left. Now that's what I'm talking about!
I have a pair of Doug Aldrich pickups and I notice they have such a low output compare to the JB Seymour Duncan's I had on before. Thinking of switching back to my JB!s.
Man I'm speechless. Your'e so talented. The dislikes are just jealous comments....or I "don't like it 'cos I can't do it." Love the lessons...love GM but I'll never get my fingers to move that fast unless I play the track on quarter speed... lol.
Awesome lesson (& playing). I just spent the last couple weeks watching (& learning) your video lessons on the intro and main solos of the Scorps "No One Like You" and the last part of this intro solo to "Still Got the Blues" is actually very similar to the intro solo of NOLY. And thus it made picking up this SGTB intro solo much easier. ;-) Anyway, thanks for taking the time to do this... I absolutely love Gary Moore and the guitar work on SGTB is some of my favorite of his. Hope you get a chance to do a lesson for the main/ending solo some day. :)
As many Gary Moore songs that you can do would be awesome. His version of "The Messiah will come again" is awesome. And "The Loner" is a masterpiece. Anything Gary Moore.
Dude ( I don't know ur name) ur the real deal and if I ever get it together it will b cuz of ur accurate and well instructed postz thank u so much Dedicated subscriber
Clapton does a lot of two finger stuff. Jango Rhinehart did a lot of 2 fingered stuff. It's not how you get there, just "Shut Up and Play!". Thanks for another great lesson.
Sir this is premium level content. Really appreciated. Im really not comfortable with understanding how the solo fits in the chords like in rhythm in 12/8. Do u by any chance give online lessons??
You got GM down, bro. Love it. Main solo to come in the future hopefully. I know there are tutorials out there for it (I actually learned it at some point myself even), but you do GM well, I'd love to see it. The main solo also have a couple of nice licks with some interesting timing going on, I remember having a very hard time with one of them =)
Great lesson! Kind of funny how you go on talking about things but it’s called shut up and play! 😁 that being said I think it’s really helpful as a teacher that you take a moment to counsel students not just what to play but how to approach playing in general. I appreciate that
I like your style very much and I like your way how you teach. Should have seen you years ago. Tell me please, what guitar Modell are you playing? Is that a Gibson?

I think you’re from the former because you have self awareness and listen to what you do! All the best in your practice!
The tone is all in the fingers. And you're going to be bending it further than you think you are. It should hurt a little.

The moral of the story is :
if you REALLY REALLY want to learn how to play, just DO IT !
Phil Porter Thanks so much Phil! I never knew GM was left handed! Crazy. cheers
You make great points here. cheers

Shutup & Play - guitar tutorial
✌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
You are the best. You know their sound, equipment they use the total package. Thank you.
In my opinion your tutorials are the best on the net
Great Lesson shutup. Love the chit chat. I find it actually helps the lesson process and its great to hear your thoughts on players and their technique. I always like it when you say "some people play it like this but I hear it like that!" You know what I wish you would do is a clip showing you learning a song you don't know and your approach to breaking down a solo you don't know yet. Maybe a clip showing where the vids are made and your actual phsyical equipment set up, etc. You are in San Diego, right? You are simply the best at doing this stuff on UA-cam.
No, SU&P is a Canadian
A million thanks for the lessons and turning me on to Gary Moore, absolutely love it!!!
thank you sir i was struggling my whole life to get that last bit and now i got it may the universe bless you
man you have hands down the best guitar tutorials out here. really enjoyed your stuff
Jeff Downey Thanks Jeff
Another great lesson there from you, by a guitar hero of mine , Gary Moore R.I.P , but i was completely distracted by your broken pickup surround on your Les Paul. It was playing havoc with my OCD hahahahaha . Great job bro! Gary Moore's style is by no means easy to emulate but you did a good job breaking it down. Keep up the great work budd!
Absolutely the best guitar teacher on you tube!!!!
You have a beautiful tone here and really play this tune fantastic. Thank you very much for the lesson.
Thumb down on a video like this is beyond me...
Great job as always, and way to give us the keys to try and make it sound good!
On contrary, ,most players primarily use first and ring finger.
carlolf Thanks for watching Carloff.
One of my favorites teacher..is you sir Thanks a lot .i am only a beginner but i really enjoy it.
Thanks so much for offering patience and great techniques. I'm an old 60s-70s musician starting over again--a bit long in the tooth. Appreciate your help. Wanted to post to my FB 'musicians corner #2' for others to see and hear... AGAIN THANK YOU!
JR Cyberpastor Thanks JR. Good luck with your guitar playing bud. cheers
Great lesson and probably my favorite Gary Moore song......you do it justice and I (like many others) really appreciate your time and effort.
My neighbors are leaving out bowls of milk...lol
Hahahahaha :)
Great lesson. You sound just like Gary. Too bad he is in rock heaven!
Gary had an incredible touch when he played he put 100% of his heart and soul into ieach Note the listner was always left in awe.every time. You know we he got to heaven first thing saId was ....Well done Gary..
As usual Fantastic, playing and teaching........... Thanks for your help
Lovely player - and a lovely attitude - thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Your video landed on my feed. Love it. Wow such great tone and thanks for the Tutorial.
Thanks as always Andy. Sweet.
PEACE from Philadelphia
great lesson!
just starting a couplet months on guitar and getting the hang of my bends (on pitch +half and whole step) and vibrato.
would like to learn this song as a kind of measuring tool to see how wel it's going my progress (and because this song is frigging awesome).
just wondering what kind of set up you used and or pedals.
thanks in advanve
excellent lesson again.you my friend are a great teacher.im learning a lot.thank you
you make great musical observations in your vids. hard to find a great player and great teacher in one package...glad i found you...
***** Thanks Slim. cheers
Very nice and fairly easy to follow. I have the same exact wine color LP it's a pro 11 standard 2012. Definitely my favorite ax next to my '77 custom. Ok now I'm showing off lol thanks!
Best lessons and performance out there! Thanks.
Excellent lesson, can't wait to give it a go!
my favorite guitar teacher on you tube
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you....for all your great licks and learning. Heaven to let go of all scales-vids out there :-D
Thanks for sharing this!! I'd really like to see your take on Parisienne Walkways....... Your vibrato and tone are great!
Edgemo Yeah, that's next on my GM list of songs so stay tuned. cheers
Love your tone and vibrato, I would love to see you cover “Parisienne Walkways” thanks for this stuff!
Great lesson and he was definitely a unique player. Thank you.
Now that's what I'm talking about!
awesome lesson. thanks!
Man you re lessons are awesome ...
I have a pair of Doug Aldrich pickups and I notice they have such a low output compare to the JB Seymour Duncan's I had on before. Thinking of switching back to my JB!s.
Just noticed your neck pickup's beige bezel is cracked...just saying.
Fact - You are one terrific guitarist, and for that I thank you.
Could u do story of The Blues plz? Would be helpful
Thank you for a great tutorial, great playing, love your les Paul, regards Sydney😊
Man I'm speechless. Your'e so talented. The dislikes are just jealous comments....or I "don't like it 'cos I can't do it." Love the lessons...love GM but I'll never get my fingers to move that fast unless I play the track on quarter speed... lol.
eagle52 Thanks a lot! GM was incredibly fast! But he could also play one note and make it cry. cheers
Anything Gary Moore.
....Greenpeace knocking on my door... Great lesson! Thanks!!
You certainly hit these sweet notes, great playing !.
Fantastic as usual! Thank you very much.
Dude ( I don't know ur name) ur the real deal and if I ever get it together it will b cuz of ur accurate and well instructed postz thank u so much
Dedicated subscriber
Rick Hadden Thanks so much Rick!
Clapton does a lot of two finger stuff. Jango Rhinehart did a lot of 2 fingered stuff. It's not how you get there, just "Shut Up and Play!". Thanks for another great lesson.
I think i just broke 4 fingers and twisted the other 6 with that solo!!! Nice lesson though you're a very good teacher ^-^
Sir this is premium level content. Really appreciated. Im really not comfortable with understanding how the solo fits in the chords like in rhythm in 12/8. Do u by any chance give online lessons??
Great job, thanks for sharing your video with us!
You got GM down, bro. Love it. Main solo to come in the future hopefully. I know there are tutorials out there for it (I actually learned it at some point myself even), but you do GM well, I'd love to see it. The main solo also have a couple of nice licks with some interesting timing going on, I remember having a very hard time with one of them =)
Drkayb Thanks bud. Yeah I may get to that sometime, but my list is getting pretty long! cheers
I like that style of lead guitar that's what I play a lot blues thanks for sharing that
Great lesson! Kind of funny how you go on talking about things but it’s called shut up and play! 😁 that being said I think it’s really helpful as a teacher that you take a moment to counsel students not just what to play but how to approach playing in general. I appreciate that
Me encantan sus videos tutoriales. Excelente video
A very high-usage tutorial. thank you
I like your style very much and I like your way how you teach. Should have seen you years ago. Tell me please, what guitar Modell are you playing? Is that a Gibson?
Gary's power blues CD of that period are must haves.
Hello sir , i really love and respect what you do ! can you please do parisianne walkay ?
Thanks,
