I’m Buddhist. If you say Buddhism is not a religion, I’m good with that. If you say it is a religion, I’m good with that too. It all depends on your definition of religion. To me, religion is a guideline of what I should behave. It doesn’t matter whether you declare your as Buddhist or not. What matter is if you are a good son/daughter to your parents, if you are a good neighbor to your neighbourhood, if you are a good citizen to your country, most importantly if you are a good human to another being. If everyone is good, we can live in a world with less suffering.

I'm hindu but I think philosophy of budhha will make real internal peace in person. “Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.” This is the pseudonymous libertarian author John Galt in his Dreams Come Due: Government and economic, altering the Buddha’s words to suit his prejudice. An English translation of the Pali Kalama Sutta would go like this: don’t go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, ‘This contemplative [man] is our teacher.’ When you know for yourselves that, ‘These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness’ - then you should enter & remain in them.
The Buddha didn't actually say this. What he said was: "So, as I said, Kalamas: 'Don't go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, "This contemplative is our teacher." When you know for yourselves that, "These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness" - then you should enter & remain in them." -Kalama Sutta, AN 3.65
@Skeptical Cosmonaut They are not. The former says "go by your own reason and common sense" while the latter says the opposite " _don't_ go by conjecture or logical inference," and the Buddha goes on to say that you should keep in mimd things "praised by the wise". For the former, the threshold is how well a doctrine agrees with your personal faculty of reason, while in the latter the threshhold is whether or not a doctrine leads to "wellfare and happiness" when carried out.
I've been practicing buddhist philosophies for over a month now and I've officially converted today. It's really helped me to let go of my painful past, focus on today, and become a more peaceful and less angry individual overall day by day.

I honestly like the way how Buddhism thinks. It's filled with truths and isn't unrealistic. Buddhism is kinda like philosophy and I like it. Will definetely research more about it!!
For me, the way it coincides so accurately with scientific discovery is totally unique. The explanation of suffering originating from desire for more of what you've previously had is just how dopamine is handled by the brain; the pleasure of the spike and the pain of the subsequent desire is just what neuroscientists talk about in a very similar, more verbose fashion, and both understand the importance of the contrast of both; Buddhism in an intuitive and ontological way, and science in the epistemological, yet both conveying the same message. Very rare amongst belief systems, and there's many examples of this amongst the branches of this single tree of ideology. I would dare to say it is the healthiest "faith" to engage with, in many respects.
Another truth many have been deceived of: When you trust in God and cast your cares (worries, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts) upon him, they will be NO MORE! Know that there is power in the name Jesus Christ! His name casts out demons and heals! The world is wicked, evil, and of the devil. I too, was a wicked sinner of the world before I opened my heart to God. I am living proof of God's work and fruitfulness! He is an active God who hears the prayers of his! God's children are set apart (holy) and righteous. The devil is a liar that comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy; that includes your relationship with God. Open your heart to God, repent of your sins (he will forgive you), and let him direct your path. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands and purify your heart, lest you walk with the devil and follow him to hell.

I like that Buddhism doesn't feel narcissistic in the way other religions worship one/several beings and take their word as final and the whole truth (despite a lot of it being manipulated over centuries of religious warfare and just general Chinese whispers-esque oral tradition), but instead focuses mainly on how to better yourself and be a good person. As a Buddhist in training, I am hoping to improve my studies in the Buddhist teachings. I had recently renounce the Christian faith. I still respect my family for being Christian and vice versa but truth be told I sort of never agreed upon the tactic the church uses (not saying all Christians act this tactic but there were many who did straight up say this to me and to my face) “You’re a sinner who will go to hell, if you don’t go to Church, Don’t ask questions that goes against God, and Don’t be a gay” This was what I was taught when growing up, hence why I converted to Buddhism once I moved away from the country life and moved to the city. Thankfully my mum is very supportive of my life choices and she said to me “whatever makes you happy, I will be happy” and she even quoted that to me before once I came out as Gay.

As a theravadi buddist this is pretty accurate except that we do belive that anyone can achive enlightenment eventho ur not a monk.. other than that spot on!
Vihara Kossinna From what I understand traditional Theravada teachings say that VERY VERY FEW people will reach enlightenment. That's why it's the "lesser" vehicle. But luckily there are so many types of Buddhism that you can take bits from each to make what works for you!
Well, in the time of the Buddha many of his disciples reached Nibbana or at least the sotapanna state, the fist stage of enlightement. If we train our mind in the way that the Buddha taught, we can enter to the noble path. This is a process, it takes time. "He who sees Dhamma, Vakkali, sees me; he who sees me sees Dhamma. Truly seeing Dhamma, one sees me; seeing me one sees Dhamma." Vakkali Sutta. SN.22.87
The Dharmic attire is only for creating a separate identity, so people would'nt bother you while you meditate. NOT VERY VERY BUT PUT Hundread more VERY is the actual number of people getting enlighten even 70% , i don't think anyone can achieve it fully in this ending time of kaliyuga.
Yeah totally true you can achieve enlightenment without being a monk but it's not practical. In day to day life we clash with many things it's not the peaceful life a monk leads so it's not practical
"I keep coming back to these teachings whenever life gets chaotic. Each time, I find new layers of understanding and tranquility. Truly transformative."
I'm not religious but if I was, I'd probably pick this one. Seems like the most moral and loving one. Although I find it to be a bit over the top in some categories, it's still the most appealing one when it comes to logic and morals.
Byron Hardie Yeah, that’s completely fine with me. No call for genocide, slavery or anything- it’s genuinely a pretty moral code. I still think some are a bit too ott tho. Sometimes u have to hit back u know? We do need to put ourselves above animals. Again, I might be getting these guidelines totally wrong but overall- I would probs adopt near enough all of these myself- unless I was in a very tough situation where there was no other option, I would see myself sometimes having to do the bad thing for the greater good. I.e. shooting a terrorist to save a bunch of other lives
Actually Buddhism doesn't have a god, I mean atheist means you don't believe in god. It's a moral guideline for people, you don't worship anyone, it's always you. There's no rule you must become a Buddhist to like their teachings. It's basically a teacher who guides you, you can choose to ignore the spiritual stuffs, I'm an atheist btw.
Of course, ever heard of a hypothetical? I'm an atheist because I am not convinced of any gods existing. I'm simply stating that if I had to choose a religion I'd pick this one- perhaps because in my eyes it already adopts a lot of my beliefs already.
I'm athiest too but the thing is, Buddhism is not a religion, it's a "way of life", a philosophy. It works entirely different. You can disagree with certain ideas and still be buddhist, Philosophical ideas always evolve aswell, so some ideas maybe be outdated or obsolete. Like people here are saying it's just guidelines, it's not telling you that you must do it a certain way to achieve nirvana, it's just telling you what things you could do to achieve nirvana just being a good person overall could help you achieve nirvana. There's no need to give up meat, meditate, become pacifist. Just be positive in life and don't cause harm to others. Philosophy and religion don't work the same. You can actually choose what you believe in Buddhism/Hinduism/Sikhism
here’s something that might interest you: in Theravada Buddhism (at least as practiced in Thailand, but I believe also in Sri Lanka and India), the oldest sacred texts are written in the ancient language of Pali, which is somewhat akin to the use of Latin in the Roman Catholic Church. In Thailand, all males are generally expected to spend at least some time as a monk. Unlike Christian monks, one is not expected to spend one’s entire life as a monk. What is most important is that the person obeys all the rules and does his best while serving as a monk. This is especially important because laypeople gain merit by giving food and donating to temples. For these acts to bee of the greatest positive good, it is important for the monks to be pure. At one point when the King of Siam (now Thailand) found the Sangha (the group of all monks) to have been corrupted, he dismissed almost all of them and sent a small group of monks to Sri Lanka to bring back pure Theravada monks from which to recreate the Sangha. Even the King of Thailand is expected to serve as a monk at some time. There is a period in the spring that is somewhat akin to the Christian Lenten period during which many males choose to serve an abbreviated period as monks.
A small pedantic point Theravada Buddhists do not believe that only monks can gain enlightenment, but the sanga is available to those who think it gives them the best environment to practice.
My friends and I were ordained together when we were 12 years old. It was like summer camp. We caused a lot of trouble lol. We would order pizza's and have people drop us off food. Light up fire works and all that teen stuff. We got punished by our parents and the monks, but it was great times. This was in the late 90's at a Theravada Temple in California.

@@samaradashwood1491 In theory, slavery in Islamic law does not have a racial or color component, although this has not always been the case in practice.[7] Slaves played various social and economic roles, from domestic worker to highest-ranking positions in the government like Sultan. They created some great empires in history including the Ghaznavid Empire, Khwarazmian Empire, Delhi Sultanate, Mamluk Sultanate of Iraq and Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt and Levant. Moreover, slaves were widely employed in irrigation, mining, pastoralism, and the army. Some rulers even relied on military and administrative slaves to such a degree that they were considered above from the general public and sometimes they seized power.[8] In some cases, the treatment of slaves was so harsh that it led to uprisings, such as the Zanj Rebellion.[9] However, this was an exception rather than the norm, as the vast majority of labor in the medieval Islamic world consisted of paid labour by free persons.[10] For a variety of reasons, internal growth of the slave population was not enough to fulfill the demand in Muslim society. This resulted in massive importation, which involved enormous suffering and loss of life from the capture and transportation of slaves from non-Muslim lands.[11] Bernard Lewis maintains that though slaves often suffered on the way before reaching their destination, they received good treatment and some degree of acceptance as members of their owners' households.[12]

One cannot extinguish all desires. It's concepts that one has to eliminate because words cannot describe enlightenment - it has to be experienced. Buddhism is middle path. It' s craving (like addiction) that has to be eliminated. Desire is OK as long as it does not harm others. The Sanskrit word Tanha is wrongly translated as desire - when it should be craving.
Desire quite naturally fades away, just like all thoughts, feelings, sensations, forms and perceptions. When we cease clinging to these things, we free ourselves from the suffering craving causes and experience the world as it is without preconception nor bias.
That might be true if not clinging to desire was an easy thing to do. Not clinging to desire does not mean desire and the objects of desire cease to arise, one just allows them to arise without craving their continued existence and then allowing them to naturally fade away. Very simple, but very difficult. One must commit to a life working one's way through all those things; dreams, goals, ambition, victory, failure, gain, loss, sickness, pain, death and so on, and do so honestly to the best of one's ability. Try it, you might like it. @@ramaraksha01

I love them both and I hope I instilled in them the capacity to produce happiness for themselves by creating happiness for others, independently of circumstance. Did you not read my post? It is very difficult for human beings to not be owned by their desires, whether their nature is to seek one's ambitious desire for wealth and fame, or less ambitious desire for quiet comfort and simplicity. When one is so possessed by one's desires (or fears) one is not free. When one desires to be free, one is not free. It is only when one lets go of both the desire to be free and the fear of letting go of those things of which one is in possession, does one begin to be liberated from suffering. It's a long difficult process that requires deep and abiding commitment. So, no, it is nothing like the rocks. Namaste.@@ramaraksha01
@@jeffcowdrey1578 Sorry to butt in all of a sudden but Ramaraksha made a good point saying that if we have nothing to keep us driven, then we will simply be content with settling for nothing. Since the climb for something never guarantees happiness, Buddhists choose not to climb, but instead to be happy just being. While this belief seems very comforting and makes life much more purposeful, I have the belief that life shouldn't be about running from what scares or hurts you. I believe that although the climb is rough and scary towards a certain point, and at many points it's likely you'll fall, happiness isn't the point or the goal in any of it. For the time being, I believe that the meaning of life is simply a tool that we give ourselves from what we feel from life in order to help the human race. Some believe the meaning of life is development, due to us being here we should develop cleaner and more efficient machines in order to help each other live in comfort. Some believe the meaning of life is torment itself, and without torment comes a lack of emotion. I myself believe that the meaning of life is expression, and we need the undisturbed ability of not only absorbing all emotion we feel but also then expressing that which we feel for other's to learn and feel what we have. It is important to learn other's emotions, because the more emotions we've felt is more of life we've had. We can also then understand each other not only on a personal level but also as a species, on the mental/intellectual level. Therefore, to me, believing in something which is designed to take away some experiences of life; i.e. suffering and pain; is to put a blindfold over life itself, to run away from which we can feel, and like Ramaraksha said, to be more like the rocks. Rocks are incapable of pain since they cannot climb. I'm only commenting not to attack your belief but to see if my mind can be changed, because I honestly would LOVE to be a buddhist! I've wanted to believe in Rastafari, in old Celtic paganism, and even in some old religious stuff I made up as a kid, or even a combination of all the spiritualisties I've come across over the years, as it seems like such a comforting and much more meaningful way to live! However, for the time being, I've come to the conclusion that any ideology which seeks to comfort the believer is one that shields you from life, comfort being the absence of life. Perhaps not death exactly, since death is the absence of all, but as a simpler, less complex form of being.
@@ramaraksha01 That's exactly what Buddhism is about. "you won't have the pain but you won't get anything either" to get rid of suffering we must get rid of the good things. everything in neutral, the middle way. Suffering can only exist with pleasure.

Very nice work 👍🏾 As a newer practicing student of Theravada Buddhism, I believe this video would be most effective in answering the title’s question if it started at 4:53
As a Buddhist, this is the "Vajrayana" sect which sees Buddha as a preacher. But in the "Mahayana" sect, he is treated as a god and there are many demi gods such as Chenrezig, Guru Padmasambhava and more. The more complex version of Buddhism is also called Tibetan Buddhism so you can search that.
You are Right. Buddhism is MOSTLY Philosophical. Why ? Coz Buddha was Fundamentally a Philosopher and a Psychologist. Only some PARTS of Buddhism are Religious. Most are Not. That's why, Buddhism is the Least Religious of all the so called 'Religious' Traditions ...
No. Confucianism and Taoism are just Philosophical in Nature. Buddhism is BETTER, because it has Psychology within it. Buddha Understood the Root Cause of Mental Suffering. His Description of the Whole Process is Completely Scientific in Nature. He Realised that Humans Suffer Mentally because they Cling to the 5 Aggregates. When they Cling to it, Suffering Arises DEPENDENTLY. Having Realised this, he Came Up with a Solution ! His Solution is often called 'The Noble Eightfold Path'. So, Buddha Described the Problem and Prescribed a Solution, making him One of the Most Original Empiricists on this Planet ...
Here's an interesting fact related to Buddhism. This has been told to me by a Chinese Malaysian friend who was Buddhist. She was not practicing "hard" but her mother was. Well, she said that Buddhists do not eat starfruits because the tree Buddha sat under and meditated was a starfruit tree. So, the fruit of that tree is supposed to be sacred and thus, should not be eaten.
i've never heard of that, but there are many traditional cultural aspects mixed in, sometimes they're benign beneficial or harmful but they're not part of the teaching
The tree is a Bodhi tree, not a star fruit tree. I’m a Chinese Malaysian as well. Usually Buddhism is mixed with elements of local culture when being spread to other regions or countries.
I'm sorry that I couldn't find the passage, but the Buddha said that one should not teach that "life is suffering, that's only suffering in life" because that would be incorrect.

“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.”
This is the pseudonymous libertarian author John Galt in his Dreams Come Due: Government and economic, altering the Buddha’s words to suit his prejudice. An English translation of the Pali Kalama Sutta would go like this:
don’t go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, ‘This contemplative [man] is our teacher.’
When you know for yourselves that, ‘These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness’ - then you should enter & remain in them.
The Buddha didn't actually say this. What he said was:
"So, as I said, Kalamas: 'Don't go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, "This contemplative is our teacher." When you know for yourselves that, "These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness" - then you should enter & remain in them."
-Kalama Sutta, AN 3.65
@Skeptical Cosmonaut They are not.

It's more than just philosophy
@Jagruti Nag oof
Another truth many have been deceived of:
When you trust in God and cast your cares (worries, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts) upon him, they will be NO MORE!
It is indeed a philosophy and a great way to chose as its teachings doesnt contain supernatural, mythical things like other religions (no offense) but life itself. This was what I was taught when growing up, hence why I converted to Buddhism once I moved away from the country life and moved to the city. Thankfully my mum is very supportive of my life choices and she said to me “whatever makes you happy, I will be happy” and she even quoted that to me before once I came out as Gay.

have you ever heard of Hinduism?
GiarkReleos no it’s a religion as well
Monocle you dont have to believe in god to be religious, religion just answers the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe. The higher self takes the place of God in Busshism
You are blessed with a very nice religion.
Yeah totally true you can achieve enlightenment without being a monk but it's not practical. In day to day life we clash with many things it's not the peaceful life a monk leads so it's not practical
its so logical i think ive been following without realizing
Really ahead of it's time considering how old it is!

To think that it is from 600 bc
What a logic.. Seriously what a logical religion Lol
Fear it 😐
"I keep coming back to these teachings whenever life gets chaotic. Each time, I find new layers of understanding and tranquility. Truly transformative."
I'm not religious but if I was, I'd probably pick this one. Seems like the most moral and loving one. Although I find it to be a bit over the top in some categories, it's still the most appealing one when it comes to logic and morals.
Osama BinLaden a lot of people don’t count this as a religion necessarily, more so guidelines to live by
Byron Hardie Yeah, that’s completely fine with me.

Buddhism is not only for Buddhists. It is universal and relevant to all human beings those who really suffer. Though everyone suffers, none can realise as it is suffering .Buddha has enlightened us how to eradicate all roots of suffering. But every body is not wise to grasp it.

Great video and very informative! Despite being an agnostic atheist myself, I always regarded Buddhism as the purest and most moral of all religions. And who knows? Maybe ol' Siddhartha was onto something! :-)
Buddha was agnostic as well. There is no mention of GOD in Buddhism. You don't need to pray to Go to attain nirvana. Buddhism is classified as atheist religion, you don't need to believe in God to be a Buddhist. Another atheist religion in India is Jainism.
+sanketpardhi002 In fact, even Hinduism is atheistic in a sense. As there are 300million + gods, there is no way one can describe the nature of each one. This means that each God is representing a physics concept, for example a Hindu god could be an energy like Light, Sound or electricity.
He was onto something and discovered the truth!
Also agnostic atheist but regardless of any supernatural elements, Buddhism's focus on living the right way feels like something anyone could benefit from.

Kid B has no particular ambition of his own and gladly just followed in his Dad's footsteps. He's kind, easy-going and generous way beyond anything I could claim credit for.
"you won't have the pain but you won't get anything either"
to get rid of suffering we must get rid of the good things. everything in neutral, the middle way. Suffering can only exist with pleasure.

@@DipayanPyne94 right. Like Confucianism and Taoism
Lies.
The tree is a Bodhi tree, not a star fruit tree. I’m a Chinese Malaysian as well. Usually Buddhism is mixed with elements of local culture when being spread to other regions or countries.
