Hillside Swamp Shelter Revisions And The Gear Cradle

- Everyone remember my swamp shelter? Well this is the updated version! Its great for off the ground camping in wetlands, swamps, muddy, rainy of snow covered areas. Also perfect for hillsides and areas where the ground is all uneven. In the original set up I weaved a web of rope. For a more simple approach, I made a fixed web out of one inch wide polyprolene webbing and I made a dedicated triangular tarp for this set up.
I've decided your the mad scientist bushcraft gear inventor. 😊
Lol, sounds good to me Steve!
Great New Swamp Set Up Fellas Seeing As You Davey & Nick Never Had Coffee I Had 1 For Ya Both Buds ! ATB T God Bless
Thanks Terry! We are glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and may God bless you too brother
I need a nap now after watching this. Plum tuckered me out. 😂
Lol, this stuff is like work
The Mad Scientist of Camping, and Woodsmen has struck again...!!
Thats me! Thanks for watching Todd
I watched another you tuber that practiced Mors Kohanski teachings and thought of you. My gf knows its Dave Day when I say Hey Everybody😅. Glad Nick is back on the camera.
I think a lot more people should be practicing what Mors taught. He really knew his stuff. I'm glad you liked it and thanks for watching Sam!
Just use a hammock LOL. I love watching yawls videos though!!!! Never gets old
Thanks for watching Clinton
Really Big Ingenuity Monkey.
Dave, you are surely gifted by God with incredible ingenuity.
And as always, it's even greater to see Nick joining in with all the fun in the woods.
Great stuff 👍
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it and the things I do!
LOL Houdini had nothing on you, Dave!! And Nick, your old man won't be losing this subscriber but his tent fire video still holds the record!! 😅 Stay awesome, guys. 👍😎🇨🇦⭐💫
Thank you Marian! And we are glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Just what I needed after a long week of re-inventing applied physics: Engineer Dave re-inventing outdoor shelters. Looked like a sideways Pterodactyl from a few steps up the hill, LOL!
Lol, Thanks
Awesome updated version of your Swamp Shelter buddy! 👍
It's always great seeing you and Nick out there together man... the relationship that you two have is a joy to witness 🙂 I'm blessed that my kids enjoy spending time with me in the great outdoors as well. It truly doesn't get any better 👍 Be well my Brother!
Thanks brother John! I'm glad you liked it. The best part of outdoors is sharing it with our kids. We are lucky they like it. Take care and thanks for stopping by brother!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 My pleasure brother Dave! I couldn't agree with you more man... we're definitely very fortunate indeed that they like it. Take good care brother!
Any time I see you and Nick together, I know it’s going to be a great.video,no matter what it’s about. And y’all certainly didn’t disappoint on this one. As usual David you came up with some very cool ideas.Hope y’all have a great week and I’ll see you in the next one.
P.S. I just turned 79 on Feb 28,BUT “I’m still not letting the old man in”.
Thank you Randy and a happy birthday to you Brother! Have a great weekend and thanks for watching
You did really good with nothing touching the ground until you threw the rope on the ground lol. I love your ideas and the fact that you and nick are so entertaining. Nick always giving you crap and you not getting upset with him or whatever thing may be giving you a problem. I can tell right now this shelter will not work for me with all the troubles it’s giving you just because of the fact that I only have use of one arm and hand due to a farming accident 13 years ago. It is amazing how well a person can figure out how to do things one handed. Like starting a fire with a ferro rod deploying a ridge line tying knots and all sorts of things I have often thought that I should start a channel of my own showing how I have adapted ideas of others or have came up with my own ways of doing bushcraft and just everyday ways of doing things one handed. If you have ideas of how a person might do some things to help others like me please share. I would much appreciate it and I’m sure others would as well. Thanks Dave and Nick. Keep up the good work. I can’t wait for you next video. From way up here in the north west corner Antrim county Michigan lower peninsula 35 miles north of traverse city a mile inland from Lake Michigan God bless you both
I definitely think you should start a UA-cam channel. Not only can you share skills learned by using one hand but I know for a fact you'll get ideas from peoples comments. UA-cam videos comments section are always a gold mine of information. Thanks for watching and may God bless you too
Y'all are hilarious together! Thank you!!!
Thanks! We always have fun together
Mornin'Dave and Nick. Yes I remember! Nice to see you both back there again! Btw. very nice rope, love the sharkclips. We don't have swamps here but at the speed of the rising waters who knows I might need a setup like this (hope not!) in this small watercountry. As always I'm amazed by the amount of heavy gear you're willing to schlep around for us! Thanks aLOT 😘
No telling where or when this could be useful. It's not for just one person so several could carry the components
Dave, your always givin me ideas , my wife also loves your videos but hates when I try to make my own gear cause that means she has to sew my ideas on her sewing machine,( she won't let me touch it) , amazing, I can drive a submarine, was a firefighter, use power tools, but she seems to think ill blow up her sewing machine😂. I do hand sew sometimes but, looks like someone did it one handed with three fingers tied together lol but hey they hold together! Like you always say " we ain't tryin' to win no beauty contest " that is my favorite saying along with the saying " the handyman's secret weapon...ductape " 😂 thanks for the video you two. Nick, I love your sense of humor my friend! We love it when your behind the camera. By the way, I'm takin' my nephew out for his first bushcraft day hike!! I'm more excited than he is I think!
I like the way you focus on creating instead of selling. Practical knowledge is always useful.
,
Thanks Lynda! We figured UA-cam is ate up with people selling stuff. Homemade gear is cheaper and way more interesting
I totally enjoy your videos. I really feel bad for the local Spiders though. They must be sooooo confused by now. lol
Lol, they're used to us. Thanks for watching
Camping, bushcrafting, fishing and other outdoor activities have been a great bonding experience for me and my wife and daughter. I cherish the days we can go into the wilderness together. ❤👍
Fantastic to hear that!
Hello you two handsome men! Y’all crack me up. You can’t be losing subs-your genius inventions and hacks, along with your sense of humor HAS to ATTRACT subs, not lose them. My 11 yo grandson is now a big fan since I showed your channel to him. He lives in NW Georgia and wants to meet you both! Keep on being YOU! Your genuine love for nature and all things outdoors is very contagious. We love you!!❤TN Nana
Thank you Nana! And that's fantastic your grandson likes watching!
Fun and wholesome like nothing else! Westernkind is amazing and nature loving!
Thanks!
Super cool one, Dave! I love how you figure these things out. You are so blessed with enthusiasm and creativity. In turn you are such blessing to others. Have a great day Dave and Nick🤠 It's fun to watch you two together.
Thanks! I love figuring out odd set ups and making them! Thanks for watching and you have a good weekend!
Love watching your videos!
Wonderful to hear that!
Hahahah I'm dying. Nick "What a wonderful video this is"😅
Lol, hes a riot
Dave Nick great video
Thank you Dean!
instead of ratchet straps.....tie a rope onto the corner you want to stretch, then do a truckers hitch on the tree behind your anker tree. then you have free hands to make what adjustments are needed. then take truckers hitch down and repeat the process on other corners. great video, can't wait for the next one.
Good idea, thanks for watching
My suggestion would be is to mark the ends of your webbing. Maybe you could sew some brown cloth on the ends. Don't forget, someone is going to have to carry the bar-be-que grill too. Hahaha.
Good thinking
Like old times. ❤
Absolutely!
And Dave gives all new meaning to a bight of rope ~~~
Thanks and always a great video.
Lol! Thanks Mark, I'm glad you liked it
hey David, nice to see a video. its raining over here in SC.
so its a tri-hammock.
i say get a 20x24 tarp, have one side drop over one side of the triangle, then the other side of the tarp connect to the tree in its middle leaving two corners dropping as sides for the other sides of the triangle. like a 3 side taco.
as you say, clear as mud. maybe i should make one and send you a video. (say no, you understand my description)
Lol, I understand your description! I might actually get more of this green fabric and make hanging walls on each side of the tarp roof
I have a duffel bag that I should be able to adapt to a gear cradle. Thanks for the idea. You might want to try a trucker's hitch on each side of the tree to tighten up each side of the webbing. Starting with the webbing and the tarp higher on the trees would help a lot. Using a couple carabiners on each tightening webbing strap and using them as pulleys would help also. I'm being paged for dinner now. More comments after I watch the last of the video. Always interesting videos, new and different concepts and good advice. All in all a great video.
Thanks for the comments and Im glad you liked it George!
Love the gear cradle! Great ideas, as always, thanks for sharing!❤🧡💛
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!
Outstanding video
Thank you Hiram!
Tag the ends of your webbing with a different colors....make it easier to find ends. You could also make the ends with a buckle included, like a climbing belt. Then you could adjust or tighten the strap . Not sure if im explaining right.
I understand what you're saying and good thinking!
With every spin Nick makes with the camera, another subscriber leaves to Alabama. 🤣 I could see using this setup, we definitely have some states with swamp land. Have an awesome weekend. ✌️🇺🇸
Lol! Any wet muddy areas would love this set up. Thanks for watching and have a good weekend
Happy March!have fun you two wild men!😂❤
Thank you Brenda!
You guys Crack me up. Your crazy ideas are always fun to watch. And inspiring.
Thank you Terry!
Great ideas for the gear cradle and raised shelter. Looks like a lot less work using the webbing instead of all that rope on your older shelter. Take care guys, great video. 👍🏻
Thanks Jeff, Im glad you liked it. Yep, this webbing is a lot faster than all the rope. Thanks for watching
This was indeed a very strong set up,from the moment nick crawled in,I was thinking, this is going to stretch or snap any moment hahaha.
Lol, man I was afraid it would rip too! It held perfectly! Thanks for watching Steve
Another fun video Dave. It's nice to see you. Nick having a good time. I enjoyed watching it
Thanks Terrill! We are glad you liked it
Thanks Dave for the thread tip. Love the concept, was thinking to simplify set up, if the webbing was sewed to the fabric and just have 3 heavy d-rings on each corner. You could even sew the top to the bottom and have a triangular tent hammock by sewing loops a few feet inside the edge of the top and paracording those higher up the trees. Great ingenuity again!
That's a good thought! I may make an entire new one all one piece
Hello, and Thanks for another swamp-related video, my friend... - I look forward to watching it very shortly, and I somewhat recently watched that video when you walked in to that really muddy swamp, and you were sinking a bit, and it is one of my favorite videos of yours. Especially when you discuss your hopes of being able find your way back the way that you waled in.
I have experienced many types of mud when hiking, and it can be very unpredictable in some areas at some times. I should mention that I found it to be very helpful to have a hiking staff, especially in very remote areas. Even in places less than a mile from my home, over the decades I found that in some situations there is mud that can be very difficult to remove your feet from, depending on your weight, even without a pack (that can be removed), as there is nothing in some cases to grab onto to pull yourself out.
I have never experienced sinking when even temporarily a bit "stuck in the mod", but I was parked near a small lake or pond with someone back in my late teens, and we heard an occasional strange and very brief bubbling type sound a few times. When we were about to drive off, I noticed that my car would not move for some reason.
I decided it was best to go outside to take a look at what was going on. Well, much to my surprise, the car door would not open, and that sure raised the level of surprise to say the least. My girlfriend at the time was unable to open the passenger side door either. I rolled down the window, and found that the car had sunk enough that the bottom of the doors were in the mud.
This was not a very secluded area by the way, just off of a road close to the water line. This was a long time before cellphones, and I had no CB radio at that time either. Within an hour or so, a Jeep Renegade was passing by, and I beeped the horn, and waved to flag them down. They began to laugh as they noticed what had transpired, and somewhat easily pulled the car out of the mud and we were on our way.
Anyway, a "thumbs up" would be appreciated if you lied reading this, and it will be helpful when I check back to gauge the interest level among this somewhat unique community. It has been quite a while since I posted in the comment section to these videos. Thank You, _John_
Thanks for sharing that John and I can relate! I've seen mud before that I barely got out of!
Thank you for bringing Nick along. The younger viewers like my 16 year old nephew watches your videos too.
You are very welcome my friend. He always makes it more fun!
Almost a commercial grade product! Great stuff!
Thanks! It's definitely heavy duty enough!
My to favourites on UA-cam 😊in action
Thank you Gunter!
It's always cool watching a smart dude trying a unique shelter! I think I would try cam buckles for simplicity and then only resort to using a single ratchet strap if that didn't work. You're only going to get so much stretch out of a tarp. If it doesn't work with one ratchet strap I would guess it's probably not going to work regardless of tensile load.
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. Thanks for the ideas!
Good video as usual Brother Dave! I remember years ago, my son sitting in my lap and us watching y'all's video's. He looked up at and said "Daddy they talk like we do"! Man that was forever ago, he's 22 now and following my old path.
Yall have a great day my Brother.
Thumbs up ~John
That's awesome man! I never knew y'all watched together. Thanks for sharing that and thanks for watching Brother John!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 yep, he was just a little fella, heck John and Jillian both would set here and watch with me. I wish I could squish them both back down little like that again. Take care my Friend~ John
Marvelous video Dave, you never fail in your projects, they always work out!
Thank you Brian! They often don't work out exactly as planned but they do eventually work! Thanks for watching brother
Good to hear you Nick....Don't pick on the old guy too much...
Love all your videos.
Lol, well said. We are glad you liked it and thanks for watching Jerome!
Looked nice and spacious for sure. Thanks for the video brother
Thanks Brother, I'm glad you liked it. There's a lot of room on this set up!
I was going to recommend a ratchet strap but you mentioned it first. Nice idea. It holds promise.
Thanks James, Im glad you liked it.
Nick was right......we needed coffee! Anywho yea, the webbing underneath was a great idea. All the best.
Coffee is always needed! I'm glad you liked it Chris and thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video guys. I was sleepy while watching this it’s like shopping while you’re hungry 😂
Lol, we are glad you liked it Adam!
Cold weather Alice ! Awesome
Thanks Brother!
Fun in the wood's!
👊💀
Absolutely brother!
It’s awesome but so technical. I don’t think I could negotiate set up😆🐸🍺🔪🔥
Lol, ah it's not too bad
tyvm to you and Nick. Great content that really helps me focus on the good things. i have a pair of gnomex flight gloves bought years ago after you rec them. still going strong.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it and that's great you've had such luck out of those gloves!
I know what your going for... very creative. Maybe some type of rope/pulley system with a lever lock to sinch it all up? I dunno, Just a weird thought. Great video you guys! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, we are glad you liked it. Everyone mentioned ratchet straps but I think I like that pulley idea the best! That way I can still use carabiners. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching
I like the flubbs and not quite Rights. Keeps everything real. Nor is he afraid to appear Human.🎉😊
Thanks! I keep it as realistic as possible
Good Deal,It's Friday & Dave and Nick. TAKE CARE..
We are glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
🤠 J'adore !! ! ❤ You show you can do more with less and less,
until eventually you can make everything with nothing. Innovative shelter!
Thank you guys, for the time you spend with us! You make teaching very entertaining.
Stay lifted & enjoy your Weeks end!
Thanks! I like to think I can make anything out of nothing! Lol. Thanks for watching my friend!
Great video
Thanks!
I enjoy your videos more than I can express. Please keep them coming.
Fantastic to hear that my friend!
Fun brilliant video and it looked awesome 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you Michelle!
Brother Dave and brother ick, nice to see you fellers didn't crumble that tarp rig. Neat setup, enjoy the woods
Thanks Paul! It worked better than I'd hoped for. Thanks for watching brother
Good video Dave and Nick , this is a cool idea , thanks for sharing YAH bless brother !

Good video. God bless. From Glenn CATT. In Massachusetts.
Thanks Glenn, I'm glad you liked it and may God bless you too brother
Hay just too let you know that the video channel grunt proof called to out and said you had the very best ranger roll he had ever see. Great job
Really? That's awesome! Thanks for telling me that brother!
For super light weight and zero stretch look into mule tape! It's what I use for my hammock set up. Love you guys!
I have a lot of muletape. That stuff sews horrible. Thanks for watching my friend
@@Reallybigmonkey1 I hadn’t considered how it sewed but since you make all your gear that makes perfect sense. You’re a genius, love you guys!
@@asmith7876 I wished it would sew well, it almost always tears at the edges.
Great show Dave and Nick. Thank you.
This is a great idea. I dont know how many times we expected or started with a dry camp area and mother nature said nāy-nāy. A tarp over the top is always nice, but being elevated like you show here is way nicer.
Dry sleeping bag = happy camper. 🙂
Thanks! We are glad you liked it! Certain areas can flood overnight. This set up cures that! Thanks for watching
Thanks
Thanks for watching
Great video!!!!
Thank you!
Hi Dave and Nick!
Hello Terry!
👍👍. Thanks Dave and God bless y’all 🙏✌️
Thanks for watching and may God bless you too!
Fun Video Dave, But I have a question for Nick. Nick I wanted to ask how many times in your life have you heard
" Nick you need to pay attention"???🤣
Lol, who knows. Thanks for watching Josh
Looks like a great idea :)
Thanks!
Man, I absolutely LOVE that set-up. Refreshing idea and ya got my wheels turning again. Where's it gonna go in my saddlebag? Oh man ! Love it
Fantastic to hear that!
Hey Dave and nick, luv you guys. I carry a small lightweight hammock to use as a gear cradle slash chair. I set it up near my shelter. Also an added benefit is because I camp alone if someone stumbles on my sight it seems there are two people because of the hammock and tarp. It's like a decoy setup, they see that and I see them before they see me.
I have a net hammock that sometimes I use as a catch all but, that's a very good idea to make it look like it's more than one person there! Thanks for sharing that and thanks for watching
It always makes my day when I see that you posted a new video. I make sure that I watch it ASAP and have never been disappointed. I love your inventive mind and manufacturing skills. Entertaining and informative at the same time. Ratchet straps sound like a good idea with/without the daisy chain straps. Also good to see Nick back out with you.
Fantastic to hear that Mark! I figure most of UA-cam is tents, hammocks and tarp shelters. That's why we love showing one of a kind homemade shelters. We are glad you liked it and thanks for watching brother
its good to see your alice back in couple of video😇 good video imfo👍
I love my ALICE! Thanks for watching
@@Reallybigmonkey1 amen
Man, that is a cool shelter. Well done guys

Oh, my goodness!
What an amount of ropes, bungees, daisy chain, tapes, net, knots and carabiners,
just to create this triangle thing..!
Happy eastern, boys!

Nice! I'm looking at this thinking it makes things easier on the back.
Thanks, it is quite comfortable
Awesome video
Thank you Dave!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 my pleasure
I always enjoy the videos where you have created a new, elaborate piece of gear, or set up. I have gotten a few good ideas from you over the years. that being said, I got a real chuckle out of you talking about how big that tree is. I live about 300 miles north of San Francisco , very near the redwoods forest. I used to live down in the forest. it is not uncommon to see trees with a 15'+ diameter, so nearly 50 feet in circumference. tell Nick your kinda rambling videos with genuine banter and odd camera angles are not costing viewers, they are part of why we are here . Watching this does remind me of the years I was in the ARMY, I spent some time on Ft Benning with a lot of time in the woods. some of the hardest, but best time out of the 10 years I was in.
Thanks! I'm glad you like the videos and have picked up some tips from them. That's a reasonably big tree for down south because almost every area around here has been logged at least once. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching
Hey Dave and Nick! Another great video. Super ideas. I think you guys "balance" each other LOL. Ya'll are the best! Hope you're doing well down south. Have a wonderful day! Marty from MinneSNOWta.🙂
Thanks Marty! We are glad you liked it and all is well round here! Thanks for watching my friend
Since you asked for advice, I will suggest that you add more cross webbing straps to reduce the large spaces giving more rigidity to the supporting structure, which will give much better support for multiple people.
Good thinking, I'll probably do that since I know it works now. Thanks for watching Michele
You remind me of MacGyver. So handy.
Thanks!
Hi Dave and Nick, thanks for sharing, and let us enjoy live and outdoors. All the best, Michael
Hello Michael and we are glad you liked it Brother!
Thank you. I have a webbed triangle I needed to reinforce and cut a tarp for. You got me in gear.
Fantastic to hear that my friend
Great idea Dave! Great video Nick! Thank you! 😁👍🏼😁👍🏼
Thanks! We are glad you liked it my friend!
Dave = master builder of removable mansions out in the woods. Awesome video
Thank you Jeffrey!
That's really cool!
Thank you John!
The gear cradle is nice.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it
Hey Dave hope you guys are doing well. Wanted to update you on the big cat population in our area. I dont care what wildlife management says i know what I saw! I was on lookout mountain on 35 close to the Geordia line last night and I saw a deer about to shoot across the road in front of my vehicle so I slowed down not to hit it. But when it got in the road in front of my truck it wasnt a deer. It was a black panther that i guess was at least 200 pound cat! Ive never seen a cat that large in my whole life. That changes things for me when it comes to camping and tromping. I wont be alone from now on!
Wow! Thanks for sharing that! Most of us know black bears fear us and avoid us. Big cat behavior is totally different!
I love it when you two are together! Good job!!
Thanks Dianna! It's definitely more fun with Nick along. Thanks for watching
Killer set up Dave. Thanks for sharing. Sorry so late.
Thanks Brother! I'm glad you liked it
Like the gear cradle, cool idea.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked that
Hi Dave, just a thought but could you colour-code the eebbing straps so they're easier to find and deploy much quicker? If you tarp isn't and equilateral triangle you could match the webbing by also coding the tarp ends. I really like how this project has developed. The gear sling, too, is a really good idea.
Thats a good idea Paul. Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Great Idea David & Nick !
Thanks! We are glad you liked it
@Reallybigmonkey1 Definitely ! Great setup and we'll explained ! Cheers my friend !
Hehehe Riveting!! ~~~Ramboo 🦆(everyone seems to be leaving a heart, so to be different I’m going to entertain yous with a duck! Enjoy!) Fun vid guys! Thanks!
