Bugnet Tarp House And Cheap Amazon Cot Advice

- Опубліковано 13 жов 2024
- When camping bushcrafting or wilderness living, wouldn't it be great to have a tarp shelter that the wind could cool all while keeping bugs out? Well I found a gazebo bug net that came in four panels that zip apart to be made smaller. For the first time, I tried to rig it up on my Tarp shelter hut out in the woods. I also offer some good advice for if you plan on buying one of the cheap backpacker style camp cots from Amazon.
I've been watching your stuff for about two weeks now. By far the most informative, outdoors style videos on UA-cam. You've been at it a long time and are very generous w/ your wealth of wisdoms. Thank you for your time sir.
Some of his older stuff is pure gold also lol Dave is a great guy and I always look forward to the next video!
Fantastic to hear that my friend and I absolutely love filming subjects like this! Thanks for the comments support views and thanks for watching
Thanks brother!
I’ve been watching for years… you should really go back & watch ALL of the vids!… you will be glad you did!
Possible duct tape
The netting to that
Tarp top..
Making it one system..
Could also overlay
Another ..
Tent system
For cooler temperatures
Also .great idea..

I really enjoyed this one today. Anyone who camps in the warmer months understands the need for a bug net. I have a similar cot and klymit insulated V mattress. I recently used it in combination with a sleeping bag with no issue (40°). Anyone using that combo needs to understand that the mattress goes in the bag. Your spot on about flopping down on the mattress, you would think that was common sense. Apparently " That doesn't grow in everyone's garden" 😂
Thanks,I'm glad you liked it. I use my Klymit Static V in the winter. I noticed a cheap uninsulated air mattress actually keeps you cooler in the summer. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching my friend!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 I agree. I'm also making a shop tripod stretcher bed to use with a sleeve. I love those things. I still haven't tried the rope one you did years ago.
That looks like a comfy camp. I hope you are healing well. Some of these ideas could come in handy as an old high school friend and I are thinking a bit of hiking The Florida Trail in January 2025. I imagine the bugs are waaay different down south, lol. Looked so nice for you to have so much room with that setup. Thanks for all your great, fun videos! Take care, Dave!
Oh very comfy and very roomy! In the summer time bugs are horrible. I'm finally feeling a lot better. Take care and thanks for watching my friend
Man I can't help but think as I watch this that the guy I am watching is a super nice guy that I would be glad to be friends with.
Thanks for the advice. I've been thinking of something like this, perhaps a bit stronger tho, to use to escape winter and camp in Florida on the cheap.
Although, at 70 I might have a bit of a problem getting in and out of that cot! lol
Thanks! I'm a nice guy in real but a little weird. Lol. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching
@@Javaman92 oh it's not easy getting on it carefully!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 ALL the best people are a little weird. ;-)
Very nice setup David. This will add a great deal of comfort all around. And down here in North West Florida, you better have something to keep the mosquitoes, the noseeums, the rattlers, the moccasins, the alligators and of course the pythons away from you. They can ruin a good camping trip,in no time. LOL Good video brother!
Thanks Randy and I'm glad you liked it! Same here except alligators are rarer here. Take care and thanks for watching
The unimaginative may dismiss this set up.
SUMMER is known as ‘digging season’ for
Archaeologists and several other scientific disciplines. School is out, warm weather, students getting field experience.
And in many parts of the country it’s mosquitos, no see ums, blackflies snd idiots
‘ find any dinosaurs? This is an archaeological dig. I know that, find any?’
This would be so cool to set up as a field lab, or on a frame to set up over the excavation.
Chris
Very well said Chris! Im thinking this really could be a free standing set up with some telescoping tent poles as a frame! Thanks for watching Brother
Hi Dave, great idea for the shelter. If you can get the top and bottom sealed off, that would be pretty awesome. Can't wait to see you mod it out to work better. Take care brother.👍👌
Hello Jeff and I'm glad you liked it! I may just use my fourth panel to deal up that top. Thanks for watching and see ya in the next one
Sew and then seam seal a flap extending down inside the outer edge where you want to fasten the walls to , and arrange your fastening to that flap. The ideaa is no gap for bugs at the top. Perhaps tabs sticking down with cord run through that and the loops on the netting..
Very good idea!
Fun in the woods. Bet you were glad it wasn't mosquito season yet!! 🤣
Absolutely! Oh man I hate mosquitoes! Thanks for watching
No hotel but looks good Dave. Thanks for filming buddy. 😁👍🏼
Lol, its a five start to me! Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Thank you for the inspiration, and I hope you get well very soon. I appreciate that you cared about us enough to film even when you are sick

Dave pondering…..you know this is going to be good. Those jungle blankets are brilliant.

Thank you Jan! I'm glad you liked it and I'm definitely feeling a lot better!
My daughter is sick too. Summer flu going around. Hope ya feel better. What a cool set up. It almost looks like an event tent. Could sell goods out of it.🐸🍺🔪🔥

Great Skeeder Beater The Cot = Sketchy, Thanks Davey For Sharing Had A Coffee For Ya Hay Nick ! ATB T God Bless
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. That cot is what I call lightweight or as some might call cheap junk. Lol. Thanks for watching and may god bless you too Terry!
Your shelter idea is awesome..easy and looked very homey n comfortable. The air mattress looked comfy..the cot would be great...FOR MY DOG!!! too much trouble for this old one to get in n out. Hope your feeling better soon and those pesky sniffles go away!! Hope Nick is well. Another enjoyable video. Thank you
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. That cot is good if you dont mind babying it. Its definitely lightweight. Thanks for watching
Well well well, aren’t we getting all fancy and stuff……😘🤪 I’m surprised there aren’t any grommets on the mesh walls so you can stake it out. Have an awesome weekend, Dave. ✌️🇺🇸
Lol! Fancy and comfortable! No gromments I guess because it was meant for a gazebo. With a little sewing Ill cure that. Thanks for watching
Thanks, David, for another inventive and fun video. Keeping the mossies away is important. I figured you were going to lay that tent footprint as a floor, but I guess you really do not need it. Have fun in the woods!
You are very welcome David and I'm glad you liked it! I always bring a footprint or tarp for a floor but if the ground is dry I'll usually just skip that step. Take care and thanks for watching
Those gazebo nets are really useful. We use them all the time for a variety of things. Lots of mosquitos in Alaska, they come in handy. They also make good shade, and surprisingly, keep a good amount of rain out.
Oh I agree! and its amazing how they catch and divert away rain. Thanks for watching
Great video! The bug netting will be very useful and versatile. I look forward to seeing what else you do with it and how you modify it.
Thanks Mark, Im glad you liked it. Lots more mods in store! Thanks for watching
Good Afternoon David ! Neat set up. TAKE CARE..
Good afternoon and Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Brilliant Dave as always. Thank you for sharing. Maybe an idea to use some simple lightweight clips at the top, such as sowing clips??
I wondered whether it would be possible to bring a beach trolley into the woods to load up a heavy load for a luxury 5 star camping adventure.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it and sewing clips would definitely work. I like that beach trolley idea. Especially when pulled behind a bicycle
Another outstanding video! Glad you are feeling better
Thanks William, Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Dave, Aluminum, "uh-loom-in-um", try it, there is a test on it in the next video...😆🤣Great video!
Lol. Will do! I'm glad you liked it and thanks for watching
That thick layer of pine straw on the ground looks good enough for my bed. A tarp, air mattress, sleeping bag or quilt, and another tarp over head and I'm good to go. I've already broken a few of those man-made fancy conveniences just by laying or sitting my 220lb, 6 ft frame on them. I do like the skeeter proof room. Thanks for another useful and fun video.
Id just lay on that pine straw during the colder times of year. Once it warms up and the bugs are active? I gotta have a cot hammock or raised bed of some kind. Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching Barry
That setup is necessary in my area . Skeeters are no joke .
Oh I hear ya!
Now that's an awesome setup right there Dave! Very clever indeed! It definitely looks like it'll keep the critters out for sure... while still providing 360 degree views of the woods. Can't beat that man 👍 And with that cot and side table, you definitely have 5 star outdoor accommodations. Be well my Brother!
Thanks brother, I'm glad you liked it! It's pretty nice like it is but I'm definitely going to be doing some improvements. Take care and thanks for watching John!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 My pleasure buddy! Looking forward to seeing what modifications you come up with 👍 Take the best of care my Brother!
Great video and thanks for saying not to. It this cot. I would break it. What is the bargain bin
Dave the only guy I know that takes 15 miles of rope with him to the woods 🤣, if you did want to use a sleeping bag with that cot perhaps you could tie a string to the closing zipper by your feet then once youre in you can pull the string to close it. That would be kind of a pain tho and potentially hazardous but it would probably work lol, as always thanks for showing and I cant wait till the next one! Also I just put up a video on the new Grayl Geopress Titanium that just came out!
Lol, man rope can do anything. I guess if you're careful you can use a bag but a blanket seems easier for me. Thanks for watching brother
@@Reallybigmonkey1 oh no doubt lol just ribbing you a little 🤣 have a great weekend 👍
I can see this being a good thing for the snake island camp. To bad you cannot get a few more of the cots. I would use the tubes on 2 sides of the top of the bug net. give it a flat top so that the tarp will set snug on it. As you said they are very light weight and would not add much weight. the bottom do your rods with the finger hole for easy removal. I still can't see how you have come up with so many different types of shelters over the years
Absolutely a good set up for Snake Island and I love your idea for the bug net! You made me think I can actually just use telescoping tent poles! Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching
You're pretty spry for an old guy! 🤣🤣🤣 Watching you climb in and out of that cot reminded me of my camping trip last weekend. I usually use a hammock but last weekend tried out a new sleeping pad and small surplus bugnet thing on the ground. Climbing out of it was a workout! I am so used to reaching up and grabbing the ridgeline I may be too old to sleep on the ground, or a short cot, anymore! 😂 You make the best videos!
Lol! Ah well even in my older years Im trying to stay active and flexible if possible. I do love a hammock! Im glad you like the videos and Thanks for watching
@@Reallybigmonkey1 I'm 61, not too far ahead of you but yeah, gotta keep active! Love your work!!! Say hey to Nick!

Thanks, Im glad you liked it and the other stuff I do! Thanks for watching
good spot to set up when you are with other people to hang out in if its too hot to sit around the fire to keep bugs away.
Absolutely! Smoke keeps bugs away but sometimes it's too hot for a fire
Thats the biz Dave...once again compulsive viewing...your videos are so relaxing, just a perfect escape..
Thank you Brian!
Hi Dave! A fun work in progress. One of the things I like most about your content is the experimental outings to the woods. Unlike some channels, which cut out the goofs and only show what are more or less a product unboxings, your projects are real and always open to the great "I wonder if that would work" factor. Best to you and Nick!
Hello Terry and Im glad you liked it! Id hate to be delegated to unboxing reviews. Id much rather do as you say, lets see if this works! Thanks for watching
Awesome video. That is a really good idea with that bug net. Thank you for shareing that !
Thanks Robert , Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Pretty slick setup I've got a cot kinda like that goes together the same but it's way older cotton and steel poles and legs. Easier for this old guy to roll off a airmatress and get up lol
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. Yours sounds way better quality. Mine Id call light duty. Thanks for watching
Once again, thanks for providing practical bushcraft ideas for the South. It is hot and buggy down here. This reminds me of a "sleeping porch". Back before AC, people down South would sleep on a screened in porch. It might get a little cold, even in August. You would need a sheet or light blanket.
You are very welcome and I'm glad you liked it. Ive seen folks sleep like that years ago!
Room with a view! I like it a lot. I wonder about a hammock...👍😎🇨🇦
Thanks Marian, Im glad you liked it. I do think this can be modified easily for hammock use. Thanks for watching
Pretty darn spiffy Dave. That was a nice looking setup. That was brilliant the way you ran the cordage underneath the tarp to attach the bug netting. I just came in this morning for what was to be a three night, four day, truck camping trip in our National Forest. I managed two nights and started breaking camp at 6:00 this morning. The mornings were awesome and so were the evenings....down in the mid sixties but mid-day was brutal. I had a digital thermometer with me, the inside of a well ventilated tent got up to 105. I had an inverter, lithium battery and two fans. About all I could do was strip down to scivvies and lay of the cot under the fans. It was actually only 86 outside but stiffling. Of course, there was zero shade where I was setup. At any rate, I still enjoyed the heck out of it. I had a pack of what sounded like 10 or so coyotes running something for about an hour, round and round my spot. Your videos and others have inspired me to gear up and get out there. Now, to look for some shade.
Thanks Wayne, Im glad you liked it. Ah man! A tent in the open sun is brutal! with a full bug net under the shade of some trees is the way to go in summer times. Thanks for watching
That backpack is like a clown car 😂 Glad to see another video! My boys are 17 and 21 now and we've been watching since they were little guys. Have a beautiful day!

The price for the cot and air matress is good but, watchin' ya get in and out of it...for my old body..it would hurt lol. I love the bugnet set up! Ty Dave
Lol! It's a chore being careful with that cot. I'm glad you liked it and thanks for watching John!
Hey, Dave. Nice set up, mosquito net was a great find.
I'll have to pass on the cot. Tried similar long ago, now the knees and back, won't do that anymore. Normal size cot no problem , but like you say, way too big and heavy for backpacking .
The bug net would be much better with grommets or tie outs, you know you're going to have wind at some point. All great ideas, now that you will have used it, you'll better know what is needed to make it perfect.
God bless y'all. Tell Nick howdy. Y'all stay saf out there.
Hello Brian and Im glad you liked it. That cot definitely aint for everyone. For me if I baby it Im ok with it. Thanks for watching and may God bless you too brother
I swear I don’t how you do it. You have the most constructive imagination of anyone I have ever seen. Thanks Dave for another one your informative videos.
Lol, James my mind is turning 24 hours a day thinking of stuff! Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Another vid with some good info. I had one of those cots. Wasn't the cheapest or the most expensive. The problem I had is that I move around a lot while sleeping. The cot legs don't take much movement to pop off the side tubes and you fall flat on the ground. I gave it away. I also sometimes set up a lean-to with 4 poles, giving me a more-or-less 3 or 4 foot flat roof over me, then use a bug net designed for a twin size bed. The net has a top and loops at each corner. Just attach the corner loops to the 4 poles with a bit of cord, and your covered.
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. Im wondering if using an air pad would distribute that moving around and not pop the legs off? I like the sound of your set up! Thanks for watching
You found treasure when you found that bug net. I love your eye for useful stuff.
Absolutely! I like to look at everything and think "What can I do with that"? Thanks for watching Maureen!
If you can't find one, Dutch (hammock) makes one like this except comes with a top netting
Very similar to 4wd camping here in Australia in the warmer months. Standard for us at least is tarp over head, bug net, canvas swag and i like to use a cheap tarp as a ground sheet (Just helps to keep thing clean). Its definitely not light weight.
Usually being well equipped isn't lightweight! Lol. I plan on another bugnet sealing the top. Thanks for watching Brett
That's all good if you don't have any mobility issues lol as far as that non user friendly "sleeping cot" goes, but still a fun and informative video to watch! Love your stuff bro, keep on keep'n!!
Lol, thats a good way of putting it. Its not user friendly. Ill have to baby it to make it last. Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching

Hey men, here from Argentina. Together with my father we watched you from the beginning of the channel. Now life keeps me busy with work, but from time to time I watch a video of yours. I want to congratulate you for your passion and sense of humor, as well as for having been one of the few who did this before the pandemic. I don't know if it's in your plans, but I suggest you open a Twitch or something, since for example there those of us who have Amazon Prime can give away a donation per month, and well, at least for me it would be a very economical way to contribute to the good times you give and the time you take. Greetings to you and your family, and don't give up and I kept bringing fabulous inventions.

Hey, Dave. A few years ago, I was rapidly approaching 60. I've been an avid camper my whole life, sleeping mainly on the ground or raised beds I built in my shelter. I've gotten tired of sleeping on the ground and like cots ... just something about being able to swing your legs off the bed and actually sit up ...
No, hammocks are not for me, they've been tried and have not been adopted. I've also become less interested in building a bed every time I go out, so in August of 2020, I bought one of these cots. Mine seems to be bulkier 5gan yours, but the same item overall.
I certainly don't go out of my way to "test my gear to failure," I don't baby it, either. I'm 230 lbs, and I sit on the cot to get in. I live in Canada, northern Canada, so ranger blankets can be used about 6 weeks a year, and the rest of the time is in varying grades of multiple sleeping bags. I have had ZERO issues with any of that and my cot. I love my little cot!
Thanks for the video, I'll be looking into the bug net for sure.
If yours is similar to mine I bet its a slightly heavier version. Mine was ripped with bent poles. And the way it was done were the tell tale signs of too much weight on it. Im glad you liked it and Thanks for watching
Great idea Dave! That would be really nice in Minnesota with all of the mosquitoes and bugs and we have. I wonder if there's a way to do that with a hammock inside? That would be cool too and even more light weight. Not sure there's a way to do that but I bet if anyone could figure out a way you can. I hope you're doing well. Keep on having fun in the woods!🙂
Thanks Marty, Im glad you liked it. Yep, I think it can work with a hammock. Just align the zippers, zip part of the way up then fold over and seal with a tarp clip or two! Thanks for watching

i like that bug net set up
Thanks, Im glad you liked it Phyllis!
That looked indecently comfortable for camping despite how you have to get on or off.
You could absolutely use a sleeping bag with that, just completely unzipped as a blanket with a hard cold contour to it...
I'd try tarp magnets to get the bug net to conform to the tarp, else packing tape glued to the underside of the tarp with the sticky side facing out behind the top of the net. Acts as fly tape at the same time...
Oh once youre in the cot its very comfortable! Another commenter said to take that fourth bug net panel and just enclose the top. I love that idea. Thanks for watching

I like to see how your gear selection has changed over the years. Actually trial and error, and really using your stuff.
It's always evolving with my age! Lol
Absolutely great way to shelter in the warm Southern woods Dave. All the elements of a patio screen house in a backpack. I have that same air mattress and so far it has been good for me and I’m a lot heavier than you. I use it with a GO-KOT portable cot but it is sturdier than the one you used and packs into a bag about the size of your food bag. You could use this setup with a hammock but I guess the panels would have to be upside down so the zippers would leave a gap for the straps. $1.00 table? Fantastic! Keep these great ideas coming Dave!
Thanks, Im glad you liked it Steve and oh yes, this is perfect for around here! I looked up that Go Kot and its 200 dollars! Probably worth it but I paid 4 bucks for mine and repaired it. I think I can modify this net for hammock use. Thanks for watching
@@Reallybigmonkey1 I got my GO-KOT for substantially less a couple of years ago but yeah they are expensive. They're made here in Alabama and have a 3 year warranty. Besides a tent it's probably the most expensive camping item I own. Let me know if you're interested in one to try out.

Dave, OneWind makes a screen room that goes over a 3x3 meter tarp. It uses elastic that goes over the top of the tarp about a foot all the way around. I bought one last year about $57 dollars. Not quite as intriquet as yours but gets the job done. Everybody got sick this year but finally getting back to normal with the warmer temperatures.
I need to look at that and maybe modify mine like theirs. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching Randy

Ha ha ha 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂!
I wouldn't ever call this set up light weight, but I love Dave's content and character. (Even better when he is sharing time with Nick.)
It's really amazing how much good stuff you manage to carry in a backpack that doesn't seem to have a bottom... What a fun project you made there!! Very exiting idea to use a gazebo bugnet! That cod packs pretty small though, you're right to use an airmatrass to devide the weight. Like you set it up does look comfortable! Thanks again Dave for a fun and interesting video. Glad you feel better ♥
Yep, amazing what can fit in one ruck. I'm glad you liked it and thanks for watching
Cool shelter!
Thank you!
Good stuff as always
Thanks!
Waiting for the future tweaked version. Always enjoy watching you innovate as you go.
Thanks George, Im glad you liked it and lots more tweaks in store! Thanks for watching
Entertaining, as always. Using a gazebo net enclosure to make a net wall for camping is an interesting use. VERY light weight. I've a A frame net with bathtub floor I plan to use with my tarp instead of carrying a tent, to cut down some weight. It doesn't have that much room and certainly can't stand in it, but it's totally enclosed.
Looking at your netting, can't you shorten the wall height and pull maybe a foot or so from the top, use some rope to pull those edges close together to keep bugs from flying in those sag gap areas on top? Like a closure on a bag? You do have all of those handy loops on the upper edge.
For a discounted cot, that's not bad at all. Myself, I'd probably bend/break it because I'm just not that careful when I wake up
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it and I like your idea! I may just try that. Thanks for watching

good stuff David. i went camping with my dog last night. i have some hammocks under tarps set up and i just carried a large comforter.

see ya again soon.
Thanks David and I'm glad you liked it. Just have a tarp roof. Attach them panels with clips, glue, gorilla tape or velcro. No telling how many ways of doing that. Take care and thanks for watching brother
That's a pretty neat tarp setup, and the cot advice is something I've never even thought about, that would increase the longevity of the cots out there both cheaper and more expensive. Thank you!
I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful!
Great show, Dave. Thank you. That is awesome. I like how you combine different gear and things to make functional equipment.
Also, I was thinking that if you got into an area that had some recent Sasquatch activity, you wouldn't need those ghosts books. 😂
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Oh I think I'd actually love some sasquatch activity! Thanks for watching
The sleeping pad should last a while provided you don’t sleep with a machete on your hip😂. Great use of the bug net for sure.
Lol! Ah that sheath didnt have any sharp edges or points. I double checked. Thanks for watching
Definitely need something like this in Scotland. Midges are absolute gits. They are blood sucking insects but not related to mosquitos. Also unlike mosquitos you don't get ten of them or even a hundreds you get thousands. One time they got in my clothes and akk sorts to the point I needed hospital treatment. Over 400 bites on my right lower leg alone.
Really? That's horrible! We have nothing like that here. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching Gordon
I grew up with northern Minnesota mosquitos, experienced Alaskan mosquitos but, pacific northwest coastal midges (no see um's) are nasty. I feel your pain brother.
I thought it said " Trap House " 😂 ....Another Great Video David !
Lol! It kinda looks that way. Thanks for watching
