Great video Scott. I’m closing in on 3 years of doing Wim Hof. A cold shower every day followed by the breathing. Then I take what my wife calls ‘a cold walk’. I’m 67 and can honestly say this has changed my life. I have you to thank for it.
@@oneiros458 I take the whole shower cold. 5 -6 minutes most days. Occasionally I’ll take an afternoon shower which I go cold- hot-cold. I very rarely take just a hot shower. Maybe once a month.
Been Hofing for 5 years. Your experiences mirror mine! So you explained a lot of things that now make more sense. I do not do the breathing exercises as much. Just a couple of times a month. But I do the cold exposure just about every day. Mostly long cold showers and ice bath. Hard to find to do both with my busy life. The breathing exercises needs to be done with an empty stomach. And it is difficult to find the time. I am always glad when I do the breathing exercise. But I have choices to make and I want to accomplish some things in life and need time. My kids are grown and with a life of their own and I spent rewarding time raising them. Now I need to accomplish some things. Looking forward to retirement when I'm more willing and able to slow down and focus on more of my mental and physical self. I do the cold exposure on an empty stomach about 95% of the time. But you have explained also a noticeable change in the business side (if you will.) It's too bad. When money and business enter the picture; that is when things decay. I am grateful for having this in my life! And Thank You Mr. Carney for your honesty, candor and communicating your observations.
Your book is one of the things that inspired me to get started with Wim Hoff, and I've been at it semi-consistently... And I've been at it since, for...at least two years now, maybe 3 or 4? I haven't noticed any miraculous benefits, but I still like to do it. I definitely feel more chilled out and calm on days I do an ice bath. And breathwork is part of my daily routine... Workout, meditation, breathwork. But your book really explains why I do it even though when asked what I get out of it, I'm like, uh...I dunno. I just can't take the stifling comfort of modernity. Maybe it's ADD...I never feel alive unless I'm pushing or challenging myself. Some of the most fun I've had with Wim Hoff stuff is going on walks/jogs on the beach, in winter, in a bathing suit. Climbing on fallen trees, slogging through freezing water up to my waist. Especially when there's a bit of bad weather. I have a warm home a few miles away, but I have to keep pushing forward to get myself there, or I'd be screwed. Even if the tide came in and there's no beach and the water's freezing freezing and the fallen trees and chunks of clay make it a teeny bit treacherous. I'm not really thrill seeker, don't need to do BASE jumping or free soloing or anything like that...but I think I kind of understand the people who do. I don't need a lot of danger, but at least a little. And or to push myself to my limits physically or mentally, ideally both... I also absolutely love VR games that demand both intense cardio endurance and precise, accurate fast reflexes at the same time. Getting my own ice bath that I keep filled all the time was a game-changer, so I'd recommend that to anyone who is into this. You can get started pretty cheap. Get a tub for $60-100 (or even a large trash can...but that might not actually be cheaper)...I recently upgraded to a Cold Pod when it was on sale, and it's nice to have insulation and a cover. Put in a fish tank filter, fill it with bath salts and hydrogen peroxide to keep it clean... If you live in a place with seasons, you don't even need a chiller half the year. Might get one by June. It's so much easier to do it consistently when it's just sitting there waiting for you to hop in any time you want. So much better than having to go to the store, spend $40, and haul back a bunch of ice... Or even jumping in a body of water if you're lucky enough to have one. Was living with my parents for a while in their house by the bay, and I went in it almost every day from like October to March my first year of Hoffing. But often it's either too shallow so I have to almost lie down unless I walk out half a mile, or I'm getting pounded by waves. Which is a real encounter with the hostile forces of nature and cool to do sometimes... But almost freezing water is enough to contend with, and being able to just sit in a tub makes it a more tranquil meditative experience. Plus it's easy to fit in your schedule...you can be in and out in under 10 min. For breathwork, I like Dan Val...dinez? Can't remember. Breathwork Beats, great UA-cam channel. It makes it super accessible. Lots of cool videos with nice visual backgrounds, music, easy to follow along with, and it has a nice variety of breathing styles.
That verified some thoughts I've been having for a while. I read What Doesn't Kill Us and The Wedge. The first book started me on the path that I credit with ending my Grover's Disease. That means you get credit for saving me from that ordeal. For about five years now I have done the breathing every day first thing and a cold shower after I work out. I've tried to sell it to lots of people because it has power to make our lives better. But I was wondering about the "organization." Wim always seemed happy to give it away, more or less, so he could make the world better. I believed him. I don't mind him making some money from it. I think I spent $50 on an online course, but could not understand what I could get from spending more. Now I know that the answer is probably nothing. One part of all this that I really like is that you had the idea that he was a charlatan, but you were strong enough and smart enough to change your mind. Thanks!
Just an fyi, doing it after a workout is scientifically speaking the worst possible time to do it. It inhibits the recovery process. Best to do it 4 or 5 hours after a workout or like an hour before so you are warmed up again but can still enjoy the boost it gives. Other than that great job! Been at it for 5 years myself and now 2 years of baths outside. And it's been an amazing help in recovering from many many issues.
Wim Hof is real Crazy Wisdom! A good man with real values, with a crazy attitude about life! It's a shame his son can't seem to develop his same attitude of basic of kindness and generosity.
Thank you for this video and writing, "What Doesn't Kill Us." I looked everywhere I could and I still have not found any disparaging remarks, to this day, about Wim Hof and his method. You were the sceptic that I thought would find the flaw. You did not and that has great significance. I've been doing the Wim Hof method for many years now, cold showers and breathing everyday, and it has been the best thing for me. I am so grateful for Wim Hof.
Oh that’s so sad about Wim, although I have noticed in the last few years how the business side of things is now corporate, such a shame. But I will definitely carry on with my daily Wim Hof methodology, and thank you for sharing more breathwork practitioners 🙏🏻
nICE! I’m in my 6th year and became an instructor this year. It has been great for me with helping to reduce anxiety, overthinking, helping with performance. I have been doing more meditation in the morning to improve my focus and keeping the Breathwork for times of high stress or before performing I. Front of people. I think that helps aswell to still have a high effect when I do it.
@@albertb4460 Yes for sure. At the moment i am using the App headspace. I find it helpful to have someone guiding the meditation and there is also a daily streak on there, which i don't want to break! The main meditation i like is focusing on the breath, when the mind goes wandering into thoughts, which happens often, then i gently bring it back to the breath. This helps with focus, compassion for the mind, being more present and less anxiety and stress.
Great content as always mate! Got into the breathing and the other types of cold exposure thanks to you, read Wims book first and started the breath, and after What doesn't kill us, i started running al year round in only shorts. And its amazing! Will keep reading most of your work and supporting the way i can. You help people change to the better. Into the cold we all go together❄🌨
If someone honestly thinks they can do one method and never push themselves in any other way, they're missing out on so much. WHM is a great gateway but there is so much more to explore in order to become your best self and there always will be. Great video!
@@maxidigital anything and everything that challenges you. If eating brussel sprouts makes you gag. Learn to gently coerce yourself into eating them with out gagging. You can even push yourself without doing anything. Next time someone cooks you something tell them to make it the way they do. Don't add salt or anything and eat it as is. Allow yourself to just let what is be. If your searching for an "answer" sorry friend there's not one... And that is the greatest challenge of all.
@@RustyGamesMC beautifuly Saíd my friend,There Is not some big plan or So on Is JUST realy thé chalenge great respond ... Have nice moment in your life
One more comment. A person can push themselves as much as they want, and I did at first. I was pretty proud of myself and secretly, I think I was showing off. I knew I might have been. I have been humbled many times by the cold, it never gets any easier. It is the most powerful force and I will never conquer it. It has taught me, and I'm grateful for it. I do 5 min. cold showers every day, after I have done the breathing and stretching. When I can, I go and lay in the snow. There is so much science behind the Method. I want to mention the work of Andrew Huberman and Rhonda Patrick. They lay out the science. I think for me, I know that only 2 minutes per exposure is fine, and that is what I've heard is adequate. I tend to try and push more than that, but I know I get the benefits with only 2 minutes. I rarely get cold sores, anymore. One thing I have also noticed is when I take a day off, much like when working out, it does help me. I think that gives my body a little break and time to heal from the exposure. I will look forward to reading your new book. Thank you again for your work, it really was a strong catalyst for me doing this journey.
Dear Scott, I appreciate your words. This reminds me of Bruce Lee’s philosophy of Jeet Kune Do: The way is that there is no way… Thanks for your honesty…it never ceases to amaze me how greed can find its way into ANYTHING! Be well.🙏🏼
I had done qigong breathwork from a few martial arts styles for 20 years prior to finding Wim Hof (and Stig Severinsen) and adding their breath technique to my practice. I had also trained some Yoga Pranayama. I agree that there are synergistic benefits to training more than one technique. Stig and Wim's technique allowed me to slow down certain qigong practices and do more repetitions comfortably, whereas before at some point the practice was uncomfortable or even caused a feeling of suffocating.
Ja, i definitely believe in the potential of combining a mindfulness practice, with cold water exposure and qi gong. A little bit of everything. Every body is different.
Thanks for this honest reflection video, Scott! The Wim Hof Method was, as some have described, one of the gateway drugs for me on a journey of improving my life and overall health. Like you, I continue to see the positive health benefits, and therefore, continue the practice. However, I have also discovered so much more! Though I can often think whatever I am very much into at the moment is THE ANSWER, I remind myself that there is no ONE ANSWER, and anyone who thinks in such a way, I am weary of. I have read and enjoyed several of your books, and I appreciate your humble and co-practitioner-like attitude in your work. Please keep it up and best of luck to you!
Scott so good to find you again. I have been following you from the start with Wim. And I stopped doing his breath work because of the diminished responses. I will start again after listening to you talk about the same adaptations. Thank you.
Wow! Thank you for your pristine honesty! I have experienced being a part of organizations which were awesome at the ground floor, with their original (usually slightly off-the-wall) creators, but became less honest as subsequent “disciples” gained control, and moved the whole philosophy towards mass marketing. You described it perfectly. Thank you!
Thanks Scott, I have enjoyed your books a lot. In another video you comment on Andrew Huberman's recommendation to shiver, after ice baths. I have few years of experience of ice baths/ cold water swimming and a few times I have started shivering severely and also probably experienced after drop (once) and I must say that I definitely prefer to avoid that experience. i don't want to get that cold. The impression I get from Andrew Huberman is that he is generally very cautious in his recommendations and advice, but when he is recommending shivering after ice baths (for weight loss) he may be, inadvertently, encouraging people to practise unsafe ice baths that exceed what they are ready to handle. Love your comment on Wim's writing by the way! Regarding breath work, I like the Wim Hof style because it is so simple and still powerful. Never before I've been able to go on practicing any type of breath work /yoga / meditation. Badass!!!
Great job! I have been doing the 3 round breathing exercises, to warm up for the 5 round session. And I have my own cold plunge for 2 years. So I have been doing this daily for 2 years, and agree with you. I didn’t pay to join the Wim Hof organization. You can’t patent breathing and going into cold water. I am 63, and when I’m done swimming laps and sauna at the gym, I just take a cold shower with soap. I don’t need hot water anymore. Wim Hof the man, is an amazing man. But I guess the son is trying to cash in on his dads name? People don’t waste money in this. Just search it all on UA-cam and go for it. And on that happy note I will begin my 30 minutes of breathing exercises. Then go in the cold plunge. Then warm up. This is the part rarely talked about. The most painful part, warming up ! The horse stance and such. Then I will drive to the gym with the car heat on full blast. Because who wants to get in a pool again for 45 minutes to swim in water that is a little cool, unless you are warm. Then sauna and enjoy life! I was addicted after 2 weeks. The cold water is nature’s antidepressant and Valium rolled in one. Peace!
@@sgcarney thank for having the courage to stand up to his son’s organization. People need thier money for groceries and consumer goods. I was a big fan of Wim I got his book. And you can tell how much he enjoys seeing this help people. I found everything I needed, free on you tube. The breathing exercises, how to build a chest freezer cold plunge economically. And I could have afforded the $10 k one. But the electric bill for the expensive one is crazy high. I live in phoenix and we already have super high electric bills. My grandma used to be a carney before she got married. From Minnesota, Irish and danish. I know it’s a common Irish name. I was plunging twice daily our 4 summer months. 34 degrees for 9-12 minutes. But it’s 100-120 degrees outside, so no shivering when getting out. Now it’s just once a day for 9-12 minutes. Because trying to get warm after sitting in that cold water for that long, is not easy. That by far is the most difficult part of cold plunge. Avoiding the shivering with warm clothes and the horse stance excercise. Do you have any other suggestions on warming up? Thanks
In phoenix I would say the trick to warming up is just to hang out outside. That city is basically a free sauna. Thanks for the response. I don't think I have relations from Minnesota.
Scott, love your videos. I graduated from journalism school (U of Maryland) years ago and your style is exactly what grabs me. I’ve been on-and-off “Wim Hof-ing” since 2016 and am now diving in with a vengeance. Autoimmune disease is the impetus this time. I’d like to throw some lab results at you once I get them back and keep you in the loop as I stick to daily cold exposure and breathing. My partner is a doctor (a slightly skeptical one) and my fingers are crossed that her mind can be changed by watching me get better. Keep up the great work!
Hi Scott! Just wanted to say I agree 100% with what you said in this video. Great stuff and interesting insights - especially the part about diminishing returns. Haven't thought about WHM in this way earlier, but it definitely makes a lot of sense. I feel like people on the internet easily forget WHM is not the only way for breathwork and improving your health, and people should be encouraged more to explore and discover other ways of breathing. Like you would not go to a gym to only do bench press. I am currently reading James Nestor's book and have found it fascinating.
Thanks for this brilliantly informative video. Your presentation reveals a depth of understanding of the gifts of Wim Hof's method, while being honest about having reservations regarding the certification process, marketing and commercialization within the organization. I appreciation your work to encourage others to self-educate and find the information for themselves in the great resources you mention.
Wow, 12 years that's amazing.. Thanks for the insight. I'm going on 1 year and I've experienced some of the things you talk about. So I foud a video that starts with 2 minute holding breath after exhaling and goes up to like 7 minutes and I do it 5 or 6 times reaching my 3 minutes and 40 seconds and it's doing the trick. Been doing this video for 6 months and I get what I need. I Do it twice a day and it's transformed my life. I'm wondering how Wim, after doing his breathing for 40 years can voluntarily influence his immune system and fight off endotoxins if what you've experienced is correct that the effects of his method begin reversing? Not trying to be confrontational, just that I suffer from MS and I'm slowly becoming healthier and wondering if I'm going to return to being incapacitated. I know that the mind is our true God & know that I will not be incapacitated for much longer but for people that have not reached a level of self belief and certainty, what would your response be to why Wim can do the things he does after practicing his method for so long and is supposed to actually start working against you? I too don't do the WHM because I felt I was getting so much without have to join. I'm literally becoming healthier so I don't need it. I know some peope need the extra motivation and or push so to each his or her own. I don't begrudge anyone for having a business; the point of a business is to make money so if you need the service, pay for it. Wim transformed my life, he gave me real hope and a path to a life and it's working. If I could say just one thing to someone that may be looking for an answer: do Wim's method & read Joseph Murphy's "The Power Of the Subconscious Mind" It'll change your life!! I'm also buying your books. They look to be super interesting and thank you for your insight.
Ive been doing inner engineering by studying many methods and gotta be honest I was avoiding this video because I thought it was just a guy saying how good his life is going (and that's dumb) but this was really insightful I've been having doubts about exactly this. You got a new sub sir!
Scott is the worst of his kind. Not an investigative journalist at all. These are his questions to me about deaths by Wim Hof Method. He continues spreading lies and untruths. He has some issues. Not doing the practice at all! > > Dear Enahm, > > As you know I've been working on a story about the rise of the Wim Hof method and Innerfire for the better part of four months for Men's Health and I'm reaching out to you now to seek an official comment from you on several points. > Question: I have seen multiple videos of Wim teaching various hyperventilation techniques in water. I have since located 12 cases of people dying while performing the WHM in water. Why does Wim continue to teach hyperventilation in water despite warnings on your website? > Awnser: Wim Hof doesn't teach hyperventilation techniques. Within the Wim Hof Method we never teach people to do our specific breathing exercises, before submerging in water. Would you be so kind to send me the links in where you see my dad teaching this? We are very careful and protective in teaching the people the Wim Hof Method so they practice in a save environment, on a save way. As you know I am very protective about this and would appreciate you being specific here. > Question: Innerfire BV and Wim Hof were recently named in a lawsuit alleging negligence, fraud and false advertising in a $50 Million lawsuit in California after the drowning death of Madelyn Rose Metzger. Though the suit has been in the process for several months Innerfire has yet to respond in any way. Can you explain why that is? > Answer: I have heard nothing about this and can not give you a reply on the matter. > Question: Recently on Facebook you said that “last year” you officially gave shares of the company to Wim and plan to do so with your sisters soon. Why did it take so long? What does that agreement look like in terms of control of the company? Please share those details as I have seen no changes to any official filings at KVK. > Answer: I build the company Innerfir around my dad. As you know my dad never has done this for the money. He is a pioneer and wants to help this world to become a better place, for people to take back control over their lives. To be healthy, strong and happy. I am the business man behind and created the company around my dad, gave him a voice to help 1000's of people. I am the CEO and stakeholder. I donated 50% of the shares to my dad. We are in the process of donating shares to my brother and sisters, whom also have a share in growing this company and helping my dad giving him a voice. Just family values. > Question: In 2018 you claimed that a group of bare-chested people that were rescued off of Mt Snezka by Polish search and rescue were definitely not Wim Hof method instructors and instead provided me with a link to a different group of people who you said were rescued. This turned out not to be true. The truth was that 38 instructors were rescued off the mountain and two had serious cases of hypothermia. Several witnesses who were on the expedition have told me that you instructed them to lie to the press. Can you comment on this? > Answer: I did not lie. You state here that "our" group has been rescued off the mountain. But this is not true. You are mistaken the group with the one I sent you a link from. When it concerns "our" group; Isabelle Hof was on the mountain and followed safety protocols. She initiated a return of three people that had hypothermia, and made sure these three people where taken down save. A little bit of context. The Wim Hof Method Academy takes people through a harsh training to become the best instructors possible. Not like the thousand of breathwork and ice teacher trainings that popped out since my dad and I started this. You also know that the weather on Mt Sniezka can change instantly. We do not controle the weather. We are an experienced and responsible organisation that made sure that the group in it's whole, made a save return. Best, Enahm
Great video and thanks for the open minded approach. WHM is brilliant, but has its limits (won't birng permanent happiness). One of the most valuable things I got out of WHM is that cold is your teacher. It doesn't make sense before experience, but after, it opens up some mind doors and helps to see what's beyond the mind.
Fantastic video and sharing of insights. And quite interesting, that you started out with the intention of seeing what the "scam" was with Wim, and now you have revealed that Wim is actually the real deal, and it's his sons' organisation, that is "scammy".
I’ve reversed autoimmune disease as well. Dropped 40% of my insulin dose as a type I diabetic and have my thyroid antibodies go from over 500 to under 100. Hoping to lower my meds for my Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. I would suggest low dose naltrexone which I am using to further help my autoimmune issues. It blocks the opioid receptors and then your body produces more endorphins similar to what your body does when taking cold showers or ice baths. Both combined are amazing.
Very interesting review of the method. I do a method called the condensing set from Gary Clyman in Chicago (student of Waysun Liao) - (gong on 27 years straight now) and I can honestly say it has changed my life as well. It is amazing.
I'm a certified WHM instructor and appreciate your thoughts here. One thing I will say is that I've been doing the breath work and cold exposure consistently for 5 years and have zero colds. That alone is pretty amazing considering I averaged about two a year. Thanks for the video!
I love the balance the Wim Hof method gives me. The high can be great, but, to me, the real benefit comes from the steady outcome I get from a regular practice. There is the basic breath work and the few variations you learn from the online courses, and am set. Results are there. And the cold water really stabilizes me (mood, mind chatter…). And yes, Win’s son is the business man his father never was, and never wanted to be. Thank you for your book, much appreciated.
Nice info. Winter is setting in and I'm about to buy a stock tub for plunges in the back yard. I'm terrified and excited. The cold showers arent enough.
Just a beginner here, really love Wim Hof. Interesting what you say about the organization, because I was very off put by the app; I figured it must be run by one of his sons or something and was wondering if Wim was even aware, really unfortunate, but everything I need is here on the net. Thanks for the explanations, I'm a big fan and will keep up the journey!
As an instructor I can tell you that the training sessions and webinars from the academy are highly informative and educational and are NOT focused on marketing at all. Perhaps this has changed since you were involved Scott but ive been an Instructor for about 6yrs and I can tell you that my experience is not the same as yours. Did you train as an instructor?
I never trained as an instructor, but I have trained instructors at their level 3 workshops. I also wrote a good amount of the original training literature and workbooks.
Scott I really love your book and some of your videos but what you say about the academy is factual not right. You state that the master module as it is called is purely marketing. How do you know this if you haven’t been there yourself? Also you state that instructors have to pay thousands of dollars per year? Again if you are not an instructor yourself how can you claim that. Again love your books but I would advice to do some further research and rectify these statements.
Working on a followup vid now and will clarify some of those points as I wasn't working on a script. I have taught at two level 2 workshops and saw the trainings. Things could have changed since I was there--but the emphasis was very much marketing centric. The final project/output was crafting an elevator pitch for the WHM that you would share on socials. I was slightly off on the price of the training and have spoken to some instructors to clarify that it's roughly 3500 euros for LV 1 training, 700 euros for level 2 and 500 euros for the yearly renewal. On top of that it's a 10% tithe for instructor earnings and, and I understand it, instructors are required to work the Poland retreat without any compensation. I will do a better job of communicating these details in the future, and there is a lot more to say about the organizational structure and how people close to the method get burned that I had been hesitant to talk publicly about, but perhaps it's time.
@@sgcarney you knew this would happen when speaking off the cuff, people would eventually highlight the cons, should take Dr Hubermans approach and cover all your bases as to avoid followup vids. Love the point of the vid, I'm 6 months in on WH methods and it's working great for me, ice bath once a week, cold showers & saunas 4 times per week, and then follow Hubermans protocols on exercise and health, i.e resistance work, endurance, and HIIT. I find doing the WH methods less frequent allows the body to maintain the stressor effect, although your experience suggest that will change, ty.
I have been doing wim hof breathing for a year, on and off. A while ago I got that tinnitus thingie couple of times, and it got me really scared to push further. Watching this video gave me hope to continue doing these breathing things. Thanks!
I had tinnitus all my life and just realizing it. I think the work amplified it. There's a wavering come and go now with pressure in my skull as well. I've realized hot flow during the work as well. I take this as a good sign because I combined this work with some other intense work and who every healed from their serious conditions using this method reported a hot fluid like flow in their damaged organs before they healed. I don't want to give the name because I believe these things are finding us and not everything is for everyone before their time comes. But regardless of my tinnitus sparkled after Wims method I'll keep doing it, luring the spinal fluid to my scalp to heal myself. Nothing is incurable. And things get worse before they get better that's the law of entropy 🎉
Interesting vid. I got into Wim via WDKU. Getting more and more into cold dunks now that we have an outdoor tub here at the house. Anyway the vid seemed well balanced. 3 sides to every story, good to hear your take.
Great story and review! Wim Hof Method helped me a lot and it's useful to this day but I also needed a change after a while. I see it as a great introduction for getting inspired about alternative healing and transfornative practices. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the video. Saw it on Reddit. I was just reading the feedbacks from their app and i didn't like what people reporting recently. Something's was off and now i know.
The daughters as well. I and several others went through similar experiences as you. It’s so disheartening that his kids have that much power and control and he has no say or control over his own company. Scary. I love Wim. His kids need discipline, hopefully he makes changes before it’s too late.
What I found in dealing with auto immune issues that present intense joint pain and other things I deal with, when I practice the breathing and ice daily the effects wain, almost like the body gets acclimated to the process so as I have good months I'll reduce the intensity and then when things flare up I have the ability to turn up the practice to keep it there as medicine ,much of this I learned by adding the language of breath for a more intimate relationship with what's going on inside,a couple months ago I got another tick bite that presented with the red rings associated with Lyme ,which is part of how I found this, but,I'm looking forward to turning up the practice to whatever intensity I need to keep that at bay
Interesting! I started my wh breath work and cold morning shower spring 2020. And I instinctively stayed away from the org or cultish worship. Like you take on WH and probably will read your books. 💗
I've always been scared of roller coasters, but after a year or so of doing Wim Hof (and other breathwork), I finally went on one. I was able to control my flight-or-fight just fine. Trouble was, I forgot I'm also high susceptible to motion-sickness. I conquered the fear, but the vomiting conquered me :)
Thank you so much for being honest. i love that you compare ice baths to psychedelics (i came from PSY to Ice but i get the similarities) when you talk about the effects tapering of, i was thinking of opiates where those who are able to use some without the body getting used to at higher amount of opiates; they use a on-off-on-off methode.. and this might be an option for not reaching homeostasis !? i´m a noob in the ice baths: i feel that even tho being in the cold has great mental benefits, if you are no longer shocking the body, then you get less physical benefits !? when i see people using cold (10-15c) but not ice-cold water, and staying perfectly still in there for extended amounts of time, my hypothesis is that most of what they are doing is slowly cooling the body.. with less of a shock to the sanses.. i feel that ones you know the cold (when you can sit still in 2C water for 10 min.) then you should challenge the Body.. Using very cold water, and move your body (use the mussels) and then stay in for a shorter amount of time. and finally experiment with the on-off-on-off methode, everyday might not be the most efficient in the long run..
I do sauna sessions that incorporate sporadic plunges into the ocean, off the northern coast of norway. I can attest to the sense of community i encountered there, and i have definitely met some great people who seem drawn to this. This has been life changing, as symptoms of mild depression and bodily aches and pains have subsided. Just try it. Kudos to scott for calling out the predatory money makers within organizations seeking to proffit off of a profoundly human need for connection and healing.
Great you mentioned the organization. I once wanted to become certified instructor but the fee they wanted was rediculous, they also want yearly fee so that you can do business under their trade mark. This makes the workshops expensive for the common people. I heard about Einham too that he bans people. All in all I still do cold exposure from time to time but now I do more pineal gland breathing from dr Joe dispenza and I am much more into his meditations.
Yeah, His son has kind of corporatized his fathers name (with his fathers permision; no doubt). A bit sinister the way he has done it. Everyone whats to make some money but the corporate way is often the closed sinister way: trademarks, copyrights, patents etc...
Hope you're still reading comments on this video! Your comments and experience on Wim Hof method are as good a recommendation as I need to dip in to it but one question: the benefits you received are due to the breathing technique only (~10min per day) and/or the ice water? I hope my question makes sense, total beginner here but when I heard what you had to say about it, I'd be dumb to NOT give it a try.
I’m 68 and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s last year. That got me into the Wim Hoff method. I started with the cold showers year ago this Dec. started the breathing off and on for several months now. Las month I came down with COVID which wasn’t much, more like a head cold for two weeks. I started the breathing everyday this month and my last breath hold session longest was 3:02. I’ve been doing the breathing in the evening but maybe I should do it in the morning. As for ringing in the ears, as a former airline pilot that’s been around jet engines for forty years I’ve had that for years. The cold showers and Forced Exercise has diminished my symptoms immensely.
It is irrelevant whether there is or is not a marketing piece within the Wim Hof business. Wim Hof method will Live on and if through marketing his teachings get across the World then his work is definitely not in vain 🔥 breath of fire is good in all aspects
Danke für's mittteilen. Sehr interessant. Ich habe "What doesen't kill us" (my favourite book, reading it for the 4. or 5. time now) und die beiden letzten Wim Hof Bücher gelesen. Es funktioniert trotzdem (sagt Wim ja selbst auch: "Breathe M**F) Sometimes I combine the breathing with e.g. Eckhart Tolle Meditations or so. Keep on with the good work. Maybe a future Book about your experiences with Wim Hof and the brand WHM?
True, I live in Amsterdam, where the organisation is based and I can only say that you point the finger to where the situation is going bad. As you might know already the Dutch TV described Wim as a crazy man in the past, but the son maybe wants to grow out of the stigma, embracing what the worst of the Dutch culture can heal your childhood with, which is: money. Totally different from the father. The daughter is now starting to teach too, but she is also very shy and careful in the approach, and did not show the same love for money that her brother has. Maybe not all is lost and there is a possibility for them to get better.
Thanks for your frankness and integrity. I have the WHM app on my phone, which I pay for; is this the son's thing, too? Love your books, BTW. I'm 56 and I've read a LOT. They're two of my faves I keep returning to.
Thanks. I probably would have been more successful if I bent a little on the whole integrity business, but I am what I am. Anything branded "Wim Hod Method" with those hexagons on it or that looks overly official is Enahm's influence. In general I don't think it's useful to time yourself doing the method, anyway, so after you've gotten the basics there isn't really any reason to use the app anymore. It only ends up getting in the way.
Longer than half an hour at 34 or 32 Fahrenheit you start to not be fine why because you start shivering a lot?! I have the coldest ice pack sold by the coldest water that's 53 inches by 13 inches size. 2 of them. They are 27.5 Fahrenheit. Going to start using them today. 😱😱😱😱😱
Hi Scott, thanks for your video and for your books. I have been doing the breathing technique of Wima Hof for a year now. In your book, you describe additional practice that differs from the practice of breathing described by Wim Hof in his book. I mean the exhalation of the remaining air after holding the breath and tension of the muscles of the body before the control breath. You can tell why this method does not describe Wim Hof himself in his videos and how it differs. Thank you and have a nice new year!
I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to, can you send me the page number reference? I describe many breathing techniques in the book. It sounds like you're referencing something sort of like DMT breathing (done with full lungs) but also talking about the recovery breath (after WHM rounds) and also an extension technique that is not the WHM method, but releasing CO2 on a long hold to go a bit more time.
@@sgcarney This is not my publication in English. In my edition, this is page 23. Head of Power Breath. Chapter before Visualization Meditation.Thank you for your reply!
PS: About the diminishing returns... I found that disappointing too, I really liked the feelings at first, especially...there were times when I felt like my brain was rebooting, and for just a moment I didn't know who or where I was. It reminded me of when I huffed I balloon full of nitrous at a music festival as a teenager. Even the T-rex hands, which some people find unpleasant...I actually like it. Only thing that can consistently sort of get me there now was... Until recently, the WHM app had a section with alternate breathing styles... One was for hangovers, one was for sleep... I really like the one... I think it was called Power Breathing, where there wasn't really a retention, just 3 increasing speeds, then you contract your body as you hold for like 15 seconds. Seems to have disappeared from the app, and I'm disappointed that I can't find a guided video of it anywhere. But anyway... It's basically another way of getting high. There's nothing wrong with feeling good and wanting to feel good if you can do it safely... But Buddhism has a lot to teach about this... People think amazing experiences are the point of spiritual practices, or evidence of spiritual attainment or something... But they are not the point, at least not from the POV of Buddhism, nor do I think they should be for someone who just wants to be happier and healthier. As Buddhist teachings warn, the pleasurable side-effects of meditative practices are not the point of meditation, and craving them can become yet another trap, no different from lusting after food or wealth or sex or fame.
while pilosophically i agree with your end message... i dont feel motivated to try another breathing method now. i felt the website and pay to access content of WHM also not very likeable. the freely available content is amazing and what i am sticking to and sharing. i am not sure when i started but i have been doing WHM for like 3 years 2-5 times a week, mostly in the morning, cold showers 1-5 times a week. it is sad the tingly stuff got less but i am noticably more resilient to cold and whenever i do get somewhat sick i am motivated again to do it more regularly xD the routines just get too much, 5 min warmup, 15 minutes stretching, 15 breathing, 15-30 minutes workout, cold shower i avoid before or after eating, but is no extra effort. i just wish i find someone to do this together with, cause alone it takes a bothering amount of time, and as i am young and healhty i just do it for staying that way.
You have a misunderstanding of "plateauing" 11:15. "reaching Greater Heights" 'ascending' is probably what you mean. Plateauing is what happens when you CANNOT reach greater Heights or continue to ascend.
what do you do for the mediation/ mindset part, do you just focus internally on your heartbeat and blood or something else? I've found that I can really feel the inner workings of my body, but I just want to hear what your process is and if I can kick It up to the next level. I really enjoyed your video
Great video. Thank you for sharing your insights here. I agree with you that we can choose what breathing method works for us. I myself started swimming in cold water with my own breathing style and movements afterwards, because I knew it was good for immune system 3 years ago. At that time I did not even know who Wim Hof was. The health benefits from swimming in cold water were amaizing. It helped me cure burnout, depression and I do not need my asthma medication anymore. So it has been amaizing. Then I tried Wim hof breathwork and it was intense and due to 2 burnouts it felt really bad for me. However when I changed the pace and adapted to my body I could feel some benefits. So I do agree that we should not follow anything blindly, but adapt it to our bodies. Thank you for sharing! With love, Diana 💖
great video scott! i`m not a big fan of innerfire company either. i also liked your book and the whole kilimanjaro experience, where it seemed like wim was very record driven. it`s kind of a more realistic look at the whm thing. how about you be our guru!? hähä. cheers from austria
I don't see it that the lack of tingling in your body during the breath hold means the Method is any less effective. One is feeling the effects of the respiratory alkalosis with the tingling, and I think after several months of doing this, your body just becomes acclimated to this. I believe you are still getting the benefits of the "hormetic stress" that the alkalosis and the controlled hypoxia induces, including release of growth hormone and improved immune response. Occasionally when doing this, and as my practice of this method improves, I stick an O2 saturation meter on my finger, and I still can get my saturation down into the 50-60% range during the extended breath holds. But the bottom line is, you aren't going to become superhuman from this alone. You still have to get some exercise, and you still have to have a good diet. The WHM is simply another tool to induce the biochemical changes we can use to improve our lives and our health. I love this method. And "What Doesn't Kill Us" was a great followup read to The WHM book.
Hi - Wrapping up year 1 with WHM and I've enoyed it a lot. As someone with over a decade of experience, interested in your thoughts on the breathwork, specifically the retentions. Do you prefer holding 'as long as you can' or 'as long as it's comfortable'? I've seen lots of assertions both ways, and I doubt anything scientific has been done on pros and cons, so I'm curious how you approach it after 12 years. I personally go close to as long as possible on all of 3 retentions even though it's stressful at the end - just feels wrong to breathe in earlier than needed. Thanks!
In starting, for me it took 30 breaths used to get that sensation after doing for 2 years now continuously now it 90-120 breaths in first round for getting that sensations.
i introduced hubby to the wim hoff method after doing a free online course of wim's .... i was more into the breathwork ... i live with chronic pain so getting really cold causes my pain levels to rise so i avoid that. But hubby has been doing the cold showers ever since.
Thank you for the video. And if it made me a prospective buyer of that book, no worries. I got into the method via Wim Hof's Book and WDKU about 2 months ago. In a mood of pseudo-commitment, I booked the fundamentals video course at the WHM platform - only to almost instantly regret it. I can hardly get myself to sit down and watch even a bit of it.😅 I really wish I would've just bought "The Wedge" instead. If not for anything else, then for an informative and entertaining read.
Scott, thanks so much for this clear and down to earth video! I feel similar about the organization, although I would like to go on one of their trips to Poland to experience a full week of ice and moderate height. Also, Wim is still part of those trips, even though hundreds of people attend them by now. Would you also advise against that or do you think it might still be worth it? Again, thanks so much!
I haven't been on a retreat in Poland since 2011, so I can't tell you how they've changed since I've been there. That said meeting Wim the first time changed the trajectory of my life. I don't have an opinion on whether it's "worth the money" or not. I think it has the potential to be an amazing experience. My criticisms are not so much about the trips, but the organizational structure.
I don't want to give specific advice without seeing things directly myself. But you would want to go slow, do a lot of breathwork and don't just start with ice.
When you talk about diminishing returns, it makes me wonder if you could quit doing it for 3 months or a year or some length of time to start de-acclimating your body to it, then pick it up again and get something closer to the original benefit. I'm sure you could, but you'd probably re-acclimate a lot faster than you did the first time, I'd bet.
I have a quick question about cold showers: I've done them on and off for years - currently doing 3mins fully cold after a warm shower in the morning. Years ago I used to get a strong parasympathetic response from it and felt deeply calm and grounded for a few hours. I took a break but started cold showering again a year ago however now I don't get this parasympathetic response at all - does anyone have any suggestions on how to get it back? Thanks for your help!
Scott Great content on wim hoff I'll have to check out your other related video's great presentation I like audible listening to books like yours ( I drive long distances) so much energy in your videos. I wonder if it would neutralize the "Rona", I just love to see that study ?, Yes theory episode Superhuman on Wim Hoff better than most expos'e. Vice is ok but once you get it .The "Organization" has a reputation sadly Wim has given it over to His son and he has total control of the " family" business. I personally follow other practitioners that go beyond Hoff method .
I did a piece on the corna virus and the WHM right at the beginning of the outbreak. There hasn't been systematic research on it, but I believe the WHM is helpful. That said we should all still get our vaccines because those are helpful, too.
Great video Scott. I’m closing in on 3 years of doing Wim Hof. A cold shower every day followed by the breathing. Then I take what my wife calls ‘a cold walk’. I’m 67 and can honestly say this has changed my life. I have you to thank for it.
Love this so much. Thanks for being on the journey with me!
Do you take the whole shower cold? Or turn it cold for the last minute or so?
@@oneiros458 I take the whole shower cold. 5 -6 minutes most days. Occasionally I’ll take an afternoon shower which I go cold- hot-cold. I very rarely take just a hot shower. Maybe once a month.
You should do the breathing before the cols though
@@SuperChadiboy I’ve tried it both ways. Breathe Work after the shower seems to work better for me.
Carney for your honesty, candor and communicating your observations.
best video on the topic I've seen so far, as a somewhat regular practitioner I rly appreciated your insight especially on the wim hoff method TM stuff
That's a common sentiment among people who've been doing this for a while.
His son that he abandoned in a squat, you mean?
Thanks Scott for opening my eyes about breathing and cold exposure. I am on the journey for over 2 years now. Greeting from Poland!
Thank you for your story. Wim Hof inspired me to start our Breath Power channel. Lets spread the word and the power of the breath! ❤
Could you tell us a bit about the meditations that worked for you please?

Love this. Thanks a ton. Keep on getting out there.
That rambling was awesome. Thank you❤

If someone honestly thinks they can do one method and never push themselves in any other way, they're missing out on so much. WHM is a great gateway but there is so much more to explore in order to become your best self and there always will be.

Can you please mention some of those other ways?
I can mention two: Ayahuasca and fasting
@@maxidigital anything and everything that challenges you.
If eating brussel sprouts makes you gag. Learn to gently coerce yourself into eating them with out gagging.
You can even push yourself without doing anything. Next time someone cooks you something tell them to make it the way they do. Don't add salt or anything and eat it as is. Allow yourself to just let what is be.

This reminds me of Bruce Lee’s philosophy of Jeet Kune Do:
The way is that there is no way…
Thanks for your honesty…it never ceases to amaze me how greed can find its way into ANYTHING! Be well.🙏🏼
I had done qigong breathwork from a few martial arts styles for 20 years prior to finding Wim Hof (and Stig Severinsen) and adding their breath technique to my practice.
Thanks for your response. It's been a long time coming and there's nothing wrong at all with looking for the exact practices that speak best to you.
Badass!!!
Yeah, I think Andrew was wrong about shivering for weight loss. He was too focused on pathways and forgot all about sensations.
Peace!
Sounds like a pretty great life!
@@sgcarney that works June - September, but shivering occurs the rest of the year.
Thanks!
Beautiful and useful observations! Thank you! Greetings from Belgrade.

Thanks! I appreciate this a lot.
This is the 2nd video of yours that I’ve watched. Wow! Thank you!
Ive been doing inner engineering by studying many methods and gotta be honest I was avoiding this video because I thought it was just a guy saying how good his life is going (and that's dumb) but this was really insightful I've been having doubts about exactly this. You got a new sub sir!
Love the Wim Hof Method , that much I became an WHM instructor and purchased both your books great reads 🌬️❄️🌊
Thanks a ton! I rather like it myself.
@@sgcarney do have a new book coming in the near future?
I am working on a book about napping right now. I also had a book about climate change and war come out a few months ago.
Scott is the worst of his kind. Not an investigative journalist at all. These are his questions to me about deaths by Wim Hof Method. He continues spreading lies and untruths. He has some issues. Not doing the practice at all!

> Dear Enahm,
>
> As you know I've been working on a story about the rise of the Wim Hof method and Innerfire for the better part of four months for Men's Health and I'm reaching out to you now to seek an official comment from you on several points.
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
Best,
Enahm
100%. I love the practices. And wim is a great guy.

And things get worse before they get better that's the law of entropy 🎉
great video Scott, thank you for brining up these points
I'm about midway through following the WHM ten week course (didn't pay for it) and lots of what you say rings true. I really appreciate your honesty 👍
Thanks!
How’d you get it for free?
Love the community aspect of Wim too❤
....thank goodness for straight talking ... honest words...thank goodness for Wim the man himself 🙏🙏🙏❤
Agreed!
Interesting vid. I got into Wim via WDKU. Getting more and more into cold dunks now that we have an outdoor tub here at the house. Anyway the vid seemed well balanced. 3 sides to every story, good to hear your take.
Love hearing this. Thanks!
Great talk Scott Thank you for all you have brought to the world
Great story and review! Wim Hof Method helped me a lot and it's useful to this day but I also needed a change after a while. I see it as a great introduction for getting inspired about alternative healing and transfornative practices. Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely. There's nothing wrong with seeing the good in something and also seeking out other things as your needs change.
Thanks for the video. Saw it on Reddit. I was just reading the feedbacks from their app and i didn't like what people reporting recently. Something's was off and now i know.

Great life Brother, love your honesty and there is passion in your speech! Is there also a book in Lithuanian?
The daughters as well. I and several others went through similar experiences as you. It’s so disheartening that his kids have that much power and control and he has no say or control over his own company. Scary. I love Wim. His kids need discipline, hopefully he makes changes before it’s too late.
They filed a trademark on the name "Wim Hof" that was approved in July 2022. It seems Wim doesn't even own his own name anymore.

Hah! I guess that is a thing that can happen.
Thank you so much for being honest.
i love that you compare ice baths to psychedelics (i came from PSY to Ice but i get the similarities)
when you talk about the effects tapering of, i was thinking of opiates where those who are able to use some without the body getting used to at higher amount of opiates; they use a on-off-on-off methode..
and this might be an option for not reaching homeostasis !?
i´m a noob in the ice baths: i feel that even tho being in the cold has great mental benefits, if you are no longer shocking the body, then you get less physical benefits !?
when i see people using cold (10-15c) but not ice-cold water, and staying perfectly still in there for extended amounts of time, my hypothesis is that most of what they are doing is slowly cooling the body.. with less of a shock to the sanses..
i feel that ones you know the cold (when you can sit still in 2C water for 10 min.) then you should challenge the Body..
Kudos to scott for calling out the predatory money makers within organizations seeking to proffit off of a profoundly human need for connection and healing.
a little rambly and very insightful. thanks for the video
Glad for you, man!
That is amazing to hear!
No rambling at all… great content and insights.
This analysis of the hofs checks out. Thanks.
Thank you sir!
@@sgcarney thanks for your reply. I get you...on all counts 😊

@@sgcarneyMore precisely, this is chapter 4. Section after power push-ups and before meditation with visualization.
5 Tibetan Rites + water fasting + breathing exercises + Calesthenics + Wim hof method + reading books + saunas/hammams + Vegan diet + meditations/Breathing exercsies + semen retention = Superhuman!
while pilosophically i agree with your end message... i dont feel motivated to try another breathing method now.
i felt the website and pay to access content of WHM also not very likeable. the freely available content is amazing and what i am sticking to and sharing.
i am not sure when i started but i have been doing WHM for like 3 years 2-5 times a week, mostly in the morning, cold showers 1-5 times a week. it is sad the tingly stuff got less but i am noticably more resilient to cold and whenever i do get somewhat sick i am motivated again to do it more regularly xD the routines just get too much, 5 min warmup, 15 minutes stretching, 15 breathing, 15-30 minutes workout, cold shower i avoid before or after eating, but is no extra effort. i just wish i find someone to do this together with, cause alone it takes a bothering amount of time, and as i am young and healhty i just do it for staying that way.
Nothing wrong with that!
Honest and insightful- thanks!
Thanks for showing up
The Wim hof method (the cold) teaches you mental strength and stability to achieve anything you set your mind to.
I am just happy to see Jesse Pinkman is finally making better choices for himself.

I'll leave the Guru game to other people. I prefer writing about them and poking holes in the veneer. Cheers from Denver.
Thanks!
I alternate between long holds and shorter ones. I focus only on sensations and don't worry about timing anymore.
Great to hear.
40 min? been doing WH method for 3 years and I do now 150 - 150 -150 and get the whole sensations. using the same WH guided breathing.
Cool.
To be healthy physically and mentally it is best to do aerobic exercise, lets say 5-7 hours weekly. You can switch disciplines.
I can hardly get myself to sit down and watch even a bit of it.😅
I really wish I would've just bought "The Wedge" instead.

Hey Scott! Great video and I have been trying on and off the WHM, but I’m struggling with Raynaud syndrome and find it tough to continue. Any advise?
I don't want to give specific advice without seeing things directly myself. But you would want to go slow, do a lot of breathwork and don't just start with ice.
Water cardio and cold showers the key to life
When you talk about diminishing returns, it makes me wonder if you could quit doing it for 3 months or a year or some length of time to start de-acclimating your body to it, then pick it up again and get something closer to the original benefit. I'm sure you could, but you'd probably re-acclimate a lot faster than you did the first time, I'd bet.
I would like to know how to try to adopt this method if the person suffers from Raynaud's disease.
