Saying the Eastern Orthodox church started in 1054 AD isnt the most accurate and I am saying that as a maronite catholic. It would probably be more accurate to say both the catholic and eastern orthodox church started in the first century and were united until 1054.
Yeah...

Shouldn't the Catholic and Orthodox churches start at the same time, whether that's 30AD or 1054AD? Even though they only split officially in the 11th century, they grew parallel to one another, and it's misleading to imply that the Roman Catholic Church has a thousand year head start on the Eastern Orthodox.
Good work explaining

I am Orthodox, my dear
There's no reason to lie about something like that
Mainly because our Lord Jesus Christ did not specify a specific denomination
He gave us his name. We are called Christians because we are followers of Christ
This is why I have no motive or difference between sects, no matter how different their rituals are. I have nothing but Christ, and the Church is my house of angels. As for distinguishing between sects and following the rituals of sects, it is not in my vocabulary in life.
I just follow Christ
It is true that I am Orthodox, but I do not distinguish between churches
I do not accept a picture or statue
And I do not like that the glory of Christ when healing a person or a miracle be given to anyone else, even the saints, because there is no salvation in anyone else except through Jesus Christ.

Both of them go against the Bible. the Mormons added to scripture and believe in 3 distinct, separate Gods. The Jehovah's witnesses deny the trinity, and are therefore in heresy.

Our eastern orthodox brothers are not gonna like that you refer to them as splitting from the Roman Catholics when it is the Roman Catholics who split from them(in their view)
Well when you originally had 5 main seats of the church and 5 equal patriarchs but one of them decides he is above the others and starts implementing new dogma, I would say it is that one that has split from the others. And the orthodox church has existed well before 1054 AD. Just for reference the Bulgarian orthodox church was founded in 870 AD and received patriarchal status in 919 AD and those of Antioch, Alexandria, Jerusalem and Konstantinopol are way way older and were never under the patriarch of Rome (the pope) authority.
@@s.y.s6030 I believe the Eastern Orthodox church to be the one true catholic church as well, I'm just trying to provide a neutral view unlike the video.
@@X_mano Sorry, missed the sarcasm 😀
technically if you look back to the good ol' days you'll see that when they changed that part of the creed they were like "under whos authority did ya'll do that" and the response was "the pope's" and they didnt like that (historically the church would hold an ecumenical council over changes such as these)
also ya'll changed the name ("orthodox")
plus Catholicism has the bigger population (by 1 billion💀) and is basically universally accepted as the OG church
@@e-1074 Just because something has a bigger following, doesn't make it any truthful. The orthodox church was able to preserve its original dogmas and traditions while being under Muslim rule for over 5 centuries while the catholic church despite having the resources and access to the colonies of the Western powers has changed its views with every new pope. I would like to ask how does the pope's infallibility work when there are popes who blatantly contradict their predecessors and even condemn some to be heretics when under this central to the catholic church dogma every pope should be right. And also it was the pope who made the changes with the Filioque.

Technically, Catholicism also has appeared in 1054. Before - it was simply Christianity, having two main centers, with some differences in theology, but still undivided and common. Moreover, if one of them continues the original tradition, is much more Orthodox Christianity, than Catholicism, being closer to the first Christian believers...
Yes, Catholicism is the true successor to OG Christianity, how did you know?
@@lain7758 Catholicism is quite far from what the first Christians believe. F.e. St. Paul stated in his 1st Epistle to Timothy, that bishops and diacons should be, among other, a husband of one wife, because how could anyone care about the God's Church, if he can not take care of his own home and family. How many Catholic priests do have wifes and families?
@@avtandil Matthew 19:12.
@@lain7758 yes, some are uncapable, but they shouldn't become priests. Anyway, Catholicism has changed so much during millenia, that it has not much common with the Christ's teaching. The Eastern and Orthodox Churches are much closer to it.
@@avtandil the recommendations in 1 Timothy 3:2 are pretty much omissive in nature. God has spoken, it's up to us to interpret His teachings correctly.
Catholic here, and I disagree that you listed the Eastern Orthodox Church founding at 1054, while listing Roman Catholic at 33 AD... If you ask me, both churches only existed in 1054, if not the exact reverse of what you listed, since before they split in that year, both the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches were one, single church, called the Imperial Church of Rome, or more simply, just "the Church"...
They originally have 3 major patriarchates and each patriarchate celebrate using different rites, the Latin/Roman Rite used by the Patriarchate of Rome, the Syriac/Antiochene Rite used by the Patriarchate of Antioch, and the Coptic/Alexandrian Rite used by the Patriarchate of Alexandria... The Patriarchate of Constantinople was later added using the Greek/Byzantine Rite, and later, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem using the same rite... However, there were other rites used, such as the Armenian rite used by the Armenian Apostolic Church, and although this church participated in the early councils of the Imperial Church (despite Armenia being an independent kingdom), later on, they stopped participating... However, their authority and legitimacy was still recognized by the patriarchs of the Imperial Church...
Later, the Patriarchate of Alexandria was the first of the 5 patriarchates to experience schism, splitting into the newly-formed Coptic Orthodox Church, and the Church of Alexandria that remained in communion with the other 4 patriarchates of the Imperial Church... Then later, it was the Patriarchate of Antioch, splitting into the newly-formed Syriac Orthodox Church, and the Church of Antioch that remained in communion with the other 4 patriarchates of the Imperial Church...
Then later, the biggest schism of all happened in 1054, called the "Great Schism", where the Patriarchate of Rome and Patriarchate of Constantinople excommunicated each other... The 3 other patriarchates of the Imperial Church, the Church of Alexandria, the Church of Antioch, and the Patriarchate of Jerusalem all supported the Patriarch of Constatinople, essentially isolating the Patriarch of Rome... This was due to the arrogance of the Roman patriarch into thinking that they can just single-handedly change a church doctrine and impose it upon the other patriarchates without calling an ecumenical council... Soo, basically, it was actually the Church of Rome that separated from the Imperial Church, and not the other way around... The 4 churches/patriarchates of the Imperial Church that remained in communion with each other later on became the Holy Orthodox Catholic Church, or more commonly known as the Eastern Orthodox Church, while the Church of Rome would later become the Roman Catholic Church... Soo basically, if there's one of the 2 churches that closer to being the "successor" to the Imperial Church, it would be the Eastern Orthodox, and not the Roman Catholic Church... And again, I'm saying this as a Roman Catholic...
The thing about the Roman Catholic Church is that numerous changes and reforms were implemented... Many of the ancient practices of the early Imperial Church were lost and changed due to the Catholic reforms, which is just unfortunate... One such large reform that changed alot from the church was the Counter-Reformation campaign... Practices that were removed/added to the Church during this time included was the added use of the musical instrument "organ" to the liturgy, something that was never used before... Another is the removal of the use of local languages, and enforcing the use of Latin in every single liturgical service, even when the congregation doesn't even understand Latin... Another is enforcing the use of shape of "Latin cross" on every church building, and disapproving the use of the earlier-used "Greek cross-shaped" church buildings, which was used all throughout the Roman Empire during the ancient times... Another is the removal of the use of "rood screens", which is a screen barrier that separates the nave/congregation from the sanctuary/altar in order to preserve the sanctity of the altar... It was something that was, again, used all throughout the Roman Empire during the ancient times, but its use was disapproved during the counter-reformation campaigns... The counterpart of these "rood screens" in the Eastern Orthodox Church is the "iconostasis", which served a similar purpose... And then, another such large reforms was the introduction of the "Novus Ordo" during the 2nd Vatican Council during the 20th Century... This remove basically removed all sense or "ancientness" from the church... Meanwhile, the Eastern Orthodox Church never had a single large reform since the Schism, preserving all ancient traditions and rituals in the liturgy...
Same could be said about oriental orthodox churches
Haven't heard about Old Believers? Or Old Calendarists?
@@stevenmora0017 The thing with Old Believers is that they refused to drop some rituals whose origins can be traced back to Russian pagan rituals of old, and refused to adapt to the "integration" of the Russian church with the rest of the Eastern Orthodoxy... This disparity in rituals between the Russian church and the rest of Eastern Orthodoxy can be traced back to the formation of the Moscow Patriarchate itself, because the patriarchate in Moscow was established independently, without approval or guidance from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople... Because of this, the Moscow Patriarchate was misled and therefore, became a Christian church with Russian pagan elements, as opposed to the purely Christian practices of the rest of Eastern Orthodoxy... Along with this syncretization, came the mistranslation of scriptures and misinterpretation of doctrines...
So to fix this, and to further integrate the Russian church with the rest of Eastern Orthodoxy, a council of bishops was called by the Patriarch of Moscow and Tsar of Russia, and along with the Russian bishops, they also invited delegations not just from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, but also from the Patriarchate of Jerusalem and Patriarchate of Alexandria, to guide the Russian church to the right path... However, the changes and resolutions that came out of the councils were rejected by the so-called "Old Believers", or the conservative minority who wants to preserve the old Russian traditions, even if they're not purely Christian... Thus, the Moscow Patriarchate continued to be in communion with the rest of Eastern Orthodoxy, except for those so-called Old Believers who continued some of their pagan-origin practices, and continued to use their mistranslated and misinterpreted doctrines and scriptures, as opposed to the ones revised by the council to match those used by the rest of Eastern Orthodoxy... So technically, the Old Believers are not legitimate, and therefore heretics, in the eyes of the Eastern Orthodox Church...
The Old Calendarist however, along with the so-called "True Orthodox", were born mainly out of socio-political, and not religious or theological issues... The Old Calendarists, as seen from their name, split from mainstream Eastern Orthodoxy because they refused to adapt the Gregorian calendar, or the Revised Julian calendar, which are updated calendars and therefore more accurate, as opposed to the Old Julian calendar used by the so-called Old Calendarists... Meanwhile, the "True Orthodox" was formed mainly by the anti-communist clergy, who opposed all forms of socialism and views the ideology as anti-Christian... Most True Orthodox factions splitted from the Russian Orthodox Church after the Moscow Patriarchate supported the formation of the Soviet Union, however, True Orthodox factions also emerged from other communist countries outside of the ROC sphere... Most True Orthodox are also Old Calendarists by nature, meaning, they also dont accept the Gregorian calendar or the revised version of the Julian calendar... So these Old Calendarists and True Orthodox are considered by mainstream Eastern Orthodoxy as schismatics, and therefore, heretics, just like the Old Believers...
the orthodox and catholic churches were united together until 1054 AD, the schism divided them, a better start date for them both would be ~33 AD, on this day actually June 4th, Holy Pentecost

With this, I am really wondering what kind of Christianity practiced in Greece before 1054 if it was not Orthodoxy back then
You can definitely look to the Early Eastern Church Father's, like St. Chrysostom, St. Basil, and many others for this! While the Early Church appears to go either way on the subject of Papal Supremacy, we can definitely say that there were local bishops under Patriarchs that all met in Councils to define dogma and settle theological, sacramental, and practical disputes. The Bishop of Rome was typically present and given authority during these meetings. The Eastern Church was thus highly structured and emphasized ritual, which more often than not remains today!

They were Early Christians. Neither ortodox nor catholic. But, as far as they admit the pope (for example, in the Orthodox church there are some canonised popes before 1054, as I know), in 1054 the east Christians had broken away from the church that after that situation was named catholic.

The older your church is, it's more likely to be a true church since all of the old heretic churches went extinct over time and new heresies started to pop up in modern times.
But that's not the exact date of catholic church btw. Before great schism church in Rome was not the same as it is after the great schism, filioque, non leavened bread, cardinals, papal supremacy, etc.
Some webs says they came from 33 because they have a list of bishops in Rome (that every Orthodox, oriental Orthodox, Anglican, Assyrian, etc. Also have) and mostly because they state that doctrine in that way.
Btw I'm not saying catholic church came from nowhere, but definitely is not more old that other churches, but it's a development of the latin church in Rome through centuries, as Orthodox is a development in Constantinople and Greek world, and Lutheran in Germany, and anglicans in England
@@matiasgamalieltolmosuarez790 The Roman Church and the Greek church were two separate churches with different cultures that were in communion before the Great Schism. Logically, the truth is one, so if something is supposed to be true, everything else is not true, therefore is false. Thus it would be absurd to exclude religions for this. Also, consider that every religion can say "I have the truth, but I recognize that other religions have pieces of truth, they are less true than me, but sometimes there is something that we agree on, thus all religions have some truth in the search for God but only mine has all truth", which is a logical and sensible thought.
