The level looked more like brown belt (sankyu) than green. Doesn't hurt that he's got a phenomenal uke. :)
Agreed
Great video, Matt. He's a very good green belt for sure. I'd hate to see your black belts!
I like the fact that he can perform throws on a shorter uke.
I'm embarrassed to say I'm an ikkyu who doesn't know half of those ne-waza, plus I cannot do any of those tachi-waza as well as Michael can.
Something's very, very wrong here.
Anyway- phenomenal stuff as usual. And humbling.
Ive been involved in Kodokan Judo for 39 yrs now and instructing for 22 under the USJF and this isnt a normal go kyu test and I doubt he only has 6 months training. If he does he is a Super Judoka engineered in a lab under the Kodokan lol
I think this a very high level green belt
As a beginner Judoka - watching this is so helpful. I'm having flashbacks of how I've been owned so many times in Newaza over the last few weeks. Watching it from the outside and understanding how I've been caught is very interesting. Thanks Matt
My son did his exam for green belt. It was a big help this video thanks !!!
I have been studying this video since I found it 2 years ago. Great video and very similar to what we have been taught
Holy cow Matt you have very tough grading standards! This guy looks like a brown belt at least, and not just in terms of the number of techniques he knows - he moves extremely well. My guess is he was already in very good shape and a serious recreational athlete in some other sport before starting judo.
+510 Judo yes this guy is a very very technical kickboxer and bjj Giy
He is now a purple belt bjj brown belt judo
Check out his other video on my channel
He is an exception. But he is also the nicest guy and so humble too
This makes my gokyu test look like a joke. Wow! Super extensive. Makes me feel like I don't know shit -- I mean that with envy and respect!
everyone says this about this video, but this guy is also a very high level kickboxer so he is a top level athlete already :)
BeyondGrappling that was incredible. Is your curriculum unique? I want to be a well rounded Judoka
I just tested for nikyu this past Saturday and I am certain that this was a better test than I performed. Very nice and congratulations!
very good technique, I'll have to share some of these at practice tomorrow
BJJ guys going around saying Judo is influenced by BJJ. Oh the irony. As if BJJ didn't come from Judo...
judo is older and came from jujutsu (japanese)if anything bjj owes its tecs to these arts but bjj has a lot of moderations on japanese version😃
Just because BJJ owes more to Judo than Judo owes to BJJ doesn't mean Judo couldn't have been influenced by BJJ as well. I'm sure it goes both ways.
No, bjj does not havea lot of moderations. Check out Oda's videos from the 1930s. Everything bjj claims it invented, including jumping guard, was being done by Oda and his students 80 years ago. You know what they didn't do? Lay in the guard and try to fight off their backs. Do you know why? Because Oda figured out very quickly that doing so against an opponent who knows how to fight will get you ass beat -- which is what bjj mma fighters learned when wrestlers started to stack their hips and beat the shit of them from inside their closed guard -- So 80 years ago, Oda was alread ahead of current day bjj (which still used the guard as a static rather than transitory position).
Oss
to be honest in Judo (other then Kosen Judo) you don't get that much time to work on the ground meaninga guard pass is irrelevant as they will come stand you up if there is not an actual submission being attempted so in the case of these skills yes it is BJJ coming back around to influence Judo.
Great vid, and congrats to Michael! His tai otoshi was wonderfully executed!
he has great legs for it
Awesome!!! Congratulations for the belt!! I'm a green belt too! :) Greetings from Argentina!
I didn't learn all that for my green belt promotion. Holy cow.
we are a bit tough at our club :)
BeyondGrappling
Now I feel like I cheated. Thanks. :(
that's the way Judo should be teached, a green belt can't get his green belt just with a year practicing judo, or blue belt with 2 years...that's happening in a lot of clubs.
@@polinidream45 I am happy to see the reactions here .It remind me when i was younger in a competition i was facing a blue belt while i was orange and my eacher was like you will roast it they don't give belt the way we do.And yess y roasted it ,this is what belt test havec to be ,if you give the belt to easily that lower the level.
Actually you can be brown belt quite fast if you have a huge grappling background, but from scratch that would be ridiculous.
ty for this, it'll help me get my green belt (and now i dominate with thees techniques that nobody else know)
really smooth, great to watch!
Absolutely fantastic video! It'll come to great use!
more toward blue than green for sure......
Damn green belt here. Can’t say my tachiwaza is on that level quite yet. Know all the throws here, but your guy looks sharp!
+Ryan Williams he is a very very good green belt though
Now a brown belt with phenomenal technique
+Ryan Williams here is a very good athlete. Make sure you subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already cos I’ll be uploading new judo and bjj videos every Monday!
I was watching and watching, then the video ended :( it was really really good! Needed more!
Very advance techniques for green belt, like the juji from turtle (the one Neil Adams did to Kase)
Great idea to incorporate guard passes at belt testing. Good job!
It's a fundamental aspect of the art isn't it ?
Great video! extremely helpful
This is Excellent, but a mixture of knowledge items from Blue and Brown belts in my former dojo. Peace Out!!!
No worries
Congrats Mick and great vid.
Nice Ne Waza. But check your Tachiwaza :-) The difference between Hiza Guruma and Sasae tsuri komi ashi is not only the position of the feet (@ 2:30). These are two complete different techniques. In other words, Sasae is executed wrong. Also Harai tsuri komi ashi (@ 3:00) is wrong. What you show us is more kind of a De ashi barai. Nevertheless, nice video. Keep training - for a green belt exzellent :-)
Nice Job Mat. When will you have the blue and brown syllabus ready?
Excellent newaza for a green belt of judo ! , obviously BJJ influence is spreading
he is also a blue belt in BJJ :)
+UniofJudo Matt D'Aquino Glad you mentioned that. I was starting to feel bad for the sorry state of newaza compared to this guy.
cool video....I love judo and find the battles of judo vs bjj interesting!!
Judo looks so effective in hand to hand combat !
It is
Very well presented!
great technique and a cool video
two things:
First: your newaza is really good for a judo green belt. Although your nagewaza needs some more balance... But you'll get that in time, just keep practicing.
Second: What's the background music? :D
//Edit: nevermind, just read it, heheh. Still, keep working on those moves!
Just one question: What is his current belt? I think his level of Judo is higher than most black belts..
+Marcel he is still a green belt
How much time has he trained to reach this belt
@@DestructionBG to me it's like he's been doing judo atleast 18 months regularly 2 or 3 times a week
I saw a UFC fight cant remember who, but this guy performed a slick move in the fight and the commentator called it a osoto gari, after review of this vid it was actually more of a Sasae tsuri komi ashi @ 2:33 it doesn't look all that technical, but it definitely caught the other opponent off guard...Sometimes simple judo moves are like 'where did that come from?
+C D Kennedy Sasae is a very versatile technique
very nice video
Is there a video on UA-cam that teaches you how to safely throw someone in judo without hurting them when they land? Like holding onto their arm as the are thrown etc?
i dunno, but i should make one
Can you do this for all belt level?
Yes please. I would buy your video series if you did something like that
He´s very good but sadly none of those are tested for green belt in my country xD
Hello matt... I have a question: do you have a instructional video of the exam for white to yellow belt? I was lookin for it in your playlist section, but in the beginners basic section I didn't found it. Thank you for your help and keep on your good work!
BJJ blue blets can do this, learn on the 1 and 3 kata.
Man awesome green belt!!
i really love judo and i want to train very bad ( no judo gym at my area) anyway, does judo have that much of ground fights and submissions ?!
Depends where you train. Some rare places will do 50% stand up 50% ground and have sharp ground skills. Many places do 70%+ stand up and have underdeveloped ground techniques.
Congrats nice throws!
This is a high level green belt! Surprised there was no osaekomi and a lot of guard passes.
+CombatLife Soft forgot to add them in :)
Best green belt ever!!
AWESOME!!! This gona help me :) THNX!
Something is wrong here. This is not Kodokan Judo.
Exactly
I miss training!
+Ádám Szilvási me too
nice..hope to see your black belt exam
osu
Juji from turtle is my coach's favorite "trick" he told tu us, if we can execute it in a tournament he will buy an ice-cream for us. :)
So comprehensive :)
Judo green belt test involves guard passing into side control? Hmmmmm is this correct? Interesting that this is included but not much on what to do next. You’d think it’d be kept to falls/throws and follow through, then let someone study BJJ for the passing and submission aspects
Hi.
Which is this federation that requires those techniques in the green belt test?
This pretty standard in Australia!
He does fantastic work! Congrats to him, truly, his technique is exceptional. Also, if you don't mind, what's the name of this music? Thank you for a great video!
thatfishbreeder The music is my friends band: Eversham

Big thank you! From a long time U.S. subscriber.
this is a good job
Hmm....was thinking I'd probably be getting my Green soon......nope......I've got some work to do
Wo, Wo, Wo, this was just for green or was this the next belt up after green? I notice that he is already wearing his green belt. I'm confused, because it seems your standards for just getting a green belt are far higher than my dojo and I attend one of the most well respected dojos in the U.S. I would much rather have all the knowledge that this student here has in order to receive my green, mainly the groundwork. Good job, but I'm really confused.
It goes yellow green blue brown black I'm eleven and I'm the master in my class and capable of getting my black belt at 16 no one has done that in my class in the past or now yet lol
@@rachelcrawford5248 LOL
Could yo umake avideo of the sweeps you can do while the other one is in your guard?
muy bueno! grandioso
Nice! Thanks
very nice.
When did Judo start looking like BJJ?
It always did for the art. But not sport judo
Good to see your level of Judo is as it should be - a lot of these executions were done like you would learn them in BJJ - I've never seen a Judo school teach newaza as broad as this. Do you cross train?
yep im a purple in bjj been doing it 8 years
Better Change this answer to a Brown Belt now Matt! Congratulations!
just wish it was slower
you can slow it down to x0.25
Are there videos like this for other belts?
+BeyondGrappling Matt, at 1.43 the two 'Bucchannon rols'.. Do you have video''s on that? I can't seem to find anything on the internet on that.
You can purchase lots of video's from Matt at Beyond Grappling website and they are Excellent and quite cheap too!
Search "Rolling Bow & Arrow Choke".
Surely remembering all the names in Japanese is the hardest part!
very good 'nice
a lot of that was not on my green belt sylabus
Great video. Is there a way you can drill these solo?
Yep, try a grappling dummy! Great bit of kit!
how to passe from orange
Nice moves. Specially the ne-waza.
Name of the song please?
The music is my friends band: Eversham

Hi Matt, I'm confused of these newasa technics, is it judo or bjj? I am currently having white belt at judo :). is judo better or bjj? Thanks :)
more bjj mate :)
None is better than the other. It's just different. Practice what feels better for you.
couldnt have said it better myself Miguel
Thank you Matt and Miguel :)
they are both good
very good a like his newaza thats me week part but his tachiwaza is very week im yellow belt and im much better ;)
Is this for yonkyu?
Can hadaka be used in competitions ?
Yes it can be
What kyu is green belt down under?
advduc 3級 San kyu mate.
That is literally a jiu jitsu blue belt test. Why these two belts are not linked in the two arts I will never understand. Even the Ribeiros believe the two belts are related. Hmm
Very skilled green belt, well deserved. However, the colour of the belt doesn't mean anything. A good judoka is a good judoka. I remember when I competed and I was a green belt, and I had a lot of opponents in several tournaments that were black belts and I beat more than half of them, it's always nice to get a belt but many people get belts when they are not even on that level. just because someone is a black belt does not mean he is good or a good judoka. Ive met so many black belts that have been horrible and it makes u start to think, how the hell did you get your black belt you are horrible and knowledge wise u r terrible. some schools just throw around black belts like candy. that is wrong.
Very condensed information and hard to use, since there's no room to mentally prepare to study the next technique.
If you head to learnthegokyo.com I have an entire DVD on over 92 judo techniques that will help you

BJJ THE BEST
That uki was ridiculous he was tapping out before he even had a chance to properly finish the techniques
+fionasranndombitsandclips hi there, its because i have very sensitive elbows at the moment from an overuse injury. Sorry for any inconvenience caused
+Time lapsing it is ridiculous that freshmen like you love to cause pain and love to
instruct someone who practiced judo almost all his life and i am sure
that for you properly finished techinique is when you broke somebodys
arm it is sad
+Fiona Murphy Hi Fiona,That Uke is a former Olympian.Matt D'Aquino! And he carries a few injuries from all the years of competing at the top level.
umm, when your practicing or testing out, you don't want your Uki to see stars or to start coughing (coughing is a sign of an air choke, not a blood choke)...The Uki in this video was a good testing partner, and since the Tori properly demonstrated the techniques, Uki tapped once the technique was applied......no need to make your partner pass out
