    yes after re-watching the video I seem to have over emphasized the leg aspect a bit too much, yes it is a 'hand throw' but to be hones show me a tai otoshi where the leg doesn't hit the opponent. The hands are important and so are the legs. The key is to perfect them both not work on one more than the other. Hope that helps

    I finally understand what my sensei means when he says that we need to drive. the whole time you are doing tai otoshi, you are moving-driving your opponent. I think with your pointers my Tai otoshi will kick ass.
    Tai Otoshi also works of bjj'er who choose to bend over, stretch their arms while pulling back. It can be done at a distance by pulling on the sleeves at the 45 degree angle.
    Thank you

      hey, sorry for the late reply guys! I moved to Japan since my comment. I made my first promotion to yellow before moving. Where I live now, surprisingly, the most convenient place is a BJJ gym, which I train in. I love it a lot, but really miss Judo. I may try to cross-train, as the two styles are very complimentary and Japan is possibly the best place on Earth to learn Judo. Keep up your training! PS, I still suck at this throw, but I also still love it.

    Great Tai O instruction Matt. I play left handed and put a unique touch to the technique when playing lefty righty but your same side instruction was spot on. just wish you showed righty lefty etc. i like to push my hips through uke's when i enter to get them to step before I bow when lefty righty but for same side i enter the same.. too many people split their legs and put even pressure on both feet( that split step you showed is a knee saver) or step to the top of the triangle instead of stepping inside. Also creating a little space for them to trip over is definitely better then right up against their knee. trick is to get them moving and step where they're about to. Ranked #10 in the US for 100kg+ last year and currently #11 in US 100kg+ in 2015 as one of the smaller guys in the division

    Thanks so much for this Matt. I'm currently grading for my 5th Kyu in the BJA and Tai Otoshi is one of the techniques required.
    I think the problem is that people confuse the heck out of what the throw is supposed to actually be! For myself, I didn't really understand what it was all about andI found myself trying to turn it into a hip throw, which I thought was totally legitimate until my instructor pointed it out. Again, thanks for the instructional.

    'Why do we only step in the triangle for tai otoshi but never for any other throw?'
    No, you use that same step to open for: uki goshi, hane goshi, harai goshi, tai otoshi and uchi mata

    The last bit about the pull after the step/plant seems so intuitive but as a visually impaired judoka it is one of the hardest aspects for me to catch/feel just right in full speed randori.

    really interesting to see a) moving away from the triangle we used to be shown and b) we're happy with a gap (space is bad in judo, agreed?). proof that tai toshi is indeed te waza.

    • @kenkongermany7860
      @kenkongermany7860 7 років тому

      Yes it's te waza. And space with enough (but not so much to keep YOU from moving) tension in the others arms is good in those parts of judo. Tai Otoshi imo is kind of the uki otoshi for beginners.

    Many coaches tend to look past the height factor..a tall person fights differently than a short person..I'm.short and I used to fail my hip throws because the coach tells me to step on top of the triangle..1 day I watched the channel teach me grappling and the coach is short, he showed where to step which is near the opponent's lead foot and I was like ho yeahhhh..then I was able to do hip throws properly

    Could you do a video on the "wrong leg tai otoshi"? It's the one in which you attack uke's left leg instead of his more traditional right one. It was mentioned in Neil Adams' " tai otoshi" of the judo masterclass techniques, but i could use some help understanding it.
