As a physician and a rotator cuff patient myself motion should have been restricted to passive movement during the first 6 weeks. Excessive range of motion during this time is usually not a good sign.
I did have the same surgery a month ago and I started my therapy on Monday and kind of hurt,I'll be fine I hope that I can bring back my shoulder to be like it used to be,I will be praying for your full recovery.
Holy cow! I'm in the middle of my 5th week post op and my surgeon would have my head if I did anything but passive therapy until at least week 6. Haven't taken any meds except Tylenol, and no meds or ice since week 2. I think you may reinjure your rotator cuff if you start using weighted exercises too soon.
I agree with overdoing it. This injury likely occurred from overexercising, so why would anybody think overexercising will cure it? One has to go slow to allow for healing, not redamaging. My rehab post-shoulder replacement is fabulous-slow and steady.
@@BlackieTunes Agreed. Also her level of damage may be smaller than others. My surgeon has me do essentially no movement for the first 12 weeks! Further the stats on people that retear within 6 months is shockingly high, probably as is evidenced by this video.
Actually it is indeed 5 weeks post-op! The tenacity of a former professional dancer turned physical therapist and the great work of an excellent surgeon along with faith, make for amazing outcomes.
Pulleys work great; I used mine a lot. So sorry to hear that you are still on strong meds for pain and not sleeping. My meds made me sick, gave me hallucinations and made food taste weird so I stopped the narcotics and only used Tylenol at bedtime. Ice packs took care of any daytime discomfort. I stopped the Tylenol about two months after surgery. I was given permission to drive at six weeks but continued to sleep in the recliner for another month, because I wanted to be well-healed before sleeping in bed . Hubby is a restless sleeper and I didn't want to get elbowed or rolled over! 😏
Hysterical about the hubby-Just a reminder that this was in 2015 so all is well now thank goodness. Now my opposite shoulder is not as strong as my operated side! Must keep up!
My gosh.... I'm 33 seconds into this video and had to pause it. I too am 5 weeks post op for my rotator cuff surgery and EVERYTHING you talked about is EXACTLY what I'M going through !!
Im in week 5/6 doing only passive still. Cant sleep well but mainly due to sling. Pain went away during 1st week. Had a full thickness tear and tore all tendons.
I had rotator cuff surgery, 5 days after surgery I started PT. Yesterday I was 3 weeks post OP. PT 3xs a week plus stretches at home. Sleeping in bed, but have horrible neck issues cause the strap of my sling rubs where I had a neck fusion done. I have also added in acupuncture sessions.
Full thickness tear, 5 weeks post-op in 2 days & still in the sling full time. I was told not to do anything but passive stretches until 6 weeks. My neck & shoulders are knots!! Doing well other than that!
Absolutely follow your doctor's advice. Everyone's injury, even the same injury can manifest differently in people due to many factors like age, tissue resilience, etc. I have a history as a professional dancer and am a licensed PT. My recovery will manifest differently than others. My main point in sharing my video is showing that I can address the other areas of my body, like neck, forward shoulders , core and lower body so everything doesn't disintegrate in the process of recovery.
Before having surgery, what modifications or exercises did you do or totally avoid in your Pilates classes? I have a client who can't comfortably lie down her shoulder tear is so painful but she wants to keep moving her body, if possible.
I am awaiting consult with a surgeon for multiple supraspinatus tears and questionable stuff under the scapula. As a dancer and an athlete, this is soooooo frustrating. Dealing with chronic pain, cannot find a sleep position that works at all, and a little worried about how much OTC meds I need to take to control the pain. Icing helps but is a short term solution until I can see a surgeon. Hoping they will consider me for surgery but at 64 I am told they may not even though I am in good shape. Help!
Wow if you could do all that without major pains... amazing. Guess people have different levels of rc and bicep surgery.. and different recovery experiences.
Absolutely, everyone is different so it's not good to compare. I just wanted to share my journey and how you can "work around" your injury to still keep the rest of you intact!
Full rupture. Don't be so quick to judge. Everyone's body is different and the shape the muscles are in before surgery also impacts outcome. This is indeed 5 weeks post.
BoneSmart Pilates® That's great! I was with the Wpg Contempory Dancers. It started with, the majority, modern dance. My love was classical ballet. Rachel Brown ran the company and was very much in touch with Martha! I eventually went over to the RWB. I did have rotator cuff surgery done about 5 weeks ago. It's been quite difficult. I feel like a fossil. Like my shoulder is fused. The way you went up to 5th.....! I can't even lift my arm past my waist. I have been doing the prescribed excersises but that side motion is STUCK!
That's amazing! Do you still dance? If you re-check the video, my operated arm only makes it to 2nd actively and that's difficult. Passively with the pulley it gets higher but I can even see in the video that I'm compensating with flaring ribs, to get it up there! When I'm doing work standing at the barre, that's my unaffected arm that's moving freely so don't be fooled. As a dancer, I know you have the unique determination and focus to get through this. The one thing you can't rush is the physiologic tissue healing. That just requires time. That's why I included in my rehab, addressing the whole body and not just the shoulder. This has the positive effect of keeping you strong, keeping the muscles surrounding the shoulder (scapular muscles) intact and mobile, and it will lift your spirits! Best of luck-keep me posted on your progress!
This is a fake video to get attention and get money!!!!! She had a sling on her lower are not her shoulder. Where are the scars. This is going to hurt people. The nerve !!!!!!
For those who are knowledgeable, you'll know this is a standard RTC (rotator cuff) sling. You'll see no links to purchase anything. Why look for something negative to say. I'm sorry that's your viewpoint. I choose authenticity and positivity.
Day 6 for me. Horrible discomfort. No sleeping. Very sore. Hate sling.
As a physician and a rotator cuff patient myself motion should have been restricted to passive movement during the first 6 weeks. Excessive range of motion during this time is usually not a good sign.
As a physical therapist myself, I worked with my surgeons oversight and approval. I recovered remarkably well. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing.
Happy your healing, well.
I did have the same surgery a month ago and I started my therapy on Monday and kind of hurt,I'll be fine I hope that I can bring back my shoulder to be like it used to be,I will be praying for your full recovery.
I just had shoulder surgery...i was so happy to see you incorporate some dancing thank you

Recovered wonderfully, my surgeon was on board and impressed.

No way this is all at 5 wks post-op. Believe me. I know.
Actually it is indeed 5 weeks post-op! The tenacity of a former professional dancer turned physical therapist and the great work of an excellent surgeon along with faith, make for amazing outcomes.
I’m three weeks in and I’m doing more than this..active 43 year old . FYI working out and diet helps a lot

Wow-sounds like you can really identify. I hope the info I shared was helpful to you!
Same here.

Chris I'm sorry you had such difficulty with your neck. I hope things have resolved for you.

How long did it take for you to heal. Did you feel tightness in your shoulder blade aswell.

Sorry I'm just seeing this now. I'm assuming you had your surgery? If so how did it go?
The neck pain is no fun. I wake up with it every morning

5 weeks my ass. She must have had some very minor surgery.
Very possible! Had 4 procedures Labrum.RC,Bursa,Bicep tendon, and I’m doing this and more 3weeks out!
Full rupture. Don't be so quick to judge. Everyone's body is different and the shape the muscles are in before surgery also impacts outcome. This is indeed 5 weeks post.
Full Supraspinatus rupture and tear of the long head of the biceps from falling down icy steps while helping elderly parents.
You're a ballet dancer like I was! I CANNOT put my arm even near 5th!!!!!
Did you have surgery as well? If so, how long ago? I'm actually a modern dancer! (performed with the Martha Graham Dance Co. for a decade)
