Hello Donna, I started following you this year around a month before my shoulder surgery on June 30th 2021 (my birthday) ugh ! and I must say you took a lot of the worry and fear away for me. I tore the supraspinato and infraspinato tendons and I couldn't have imagined without watching your videos just how painful this was going to be, oh boy it's been tough to say the least but you gave me the courage and will to not give up. I'm now at approx. 14 weeks post op and my physio prepared some exercises for me to do whilst on vacation and the warm Meditteranean sea has helped enormously not only physically but mentally (no way was I going to forego my holiday) ....PS I live in Italy so it wasn't difficult to get there ! Onwards and upwards, and you're so right, don't compare your progress to others or it could set you back. Have faith in your body's ability to heal because with care and attention it will. GRAZIE !!
Donna, I can't compliment you enough on your informative recovery videos! Every body, surgery and situation are different. My journey has been much the same as yours (even though I'm a bit older). I'm at about 12 weeks and was getting discouraged. Thank you for reminding it is a process...
Much appreciate your rotator cuff surgery videos! I'm only 3 weeks out, but watching your progress keeps me grounded (and helps with the boredom, too! 😉)
Your videos have been so helpful in what to expect. I’m 4 weeks from surgery and just started physical therapy besides doing my own passive range of motion exercises. Thank you for reminding everyone that we all heal differently especially dependent on what was done surgically.
Thank you, Donna, for these videos that you've made. They are really helping me get through the ups and downs. I watched all your videos right before and right after my rotator cuff surgery and now I'm re-watching them. I'm right at 4 months now and have been feeling so discouraged at how little progress I feel I've made but re-watching your 16-week video has reminded me that I'm right about where you were at the same point. So it's helped me to take a deep breathe and keep going. Thank you, again, so much for the encouragement you've provided with your videos.
Thanks for the video. I tore 2 sections of my rotator cuff and been feeling frustrated at my perceived progress. Watching your video has helped me realize that I am on track and that this will take a good year to get as close to 100% as I will get. Thanks again!!!
These videos are so so helpful to watch. I’m only 11 days post surgery, but getting an honest big picture of my summer/ fall recovery is so very informative. I love how you discussed related service providers you are utilizing. Thanks for the gift of time in sharing your experience. You are paying it forward with your kindness and generosity. Thank you!!!
Hi Donna, I'm so glad I found your videos! I'm almost 6 weeks out from having repair surgery of an 80% cuff tear, labrum tear and also decompression on the collar bone . I went through this on my right shoulder but the tear was not as big. Today was a really hard day at PT and I kept thinking I should be farther along. I shouldn't be in this much pain off and on. Then watching your videos made me feel so much better, after crying a bit because it put things into perspective. My PT people say "everyone is different with healing" and "your doing great" but then I have a really painful session and I doubt myself. I just want to thank you so much for your series of videos. So many videos out there say all these things people can do, which is much farther along than me, leaving me feeling like I'm a wimp cause I'm still so uncomfortable. I'm usually such an upbeat and optimistic person but this shoulder surgery has beat me up a bit. So thank you again. Your video's have helped me to put things back into realistic expectations. ☺️
Mandie, you are so welcome! I always talked to people during PT that were having shoulder issues and asked how far along they were and it really helped see how true it is about how everyone heals so differently. No two shoulders are alike!!! Hang in there! It will get better. It truly is 1 step forward and 2 steps back some weeks.
@@funmakingmoneyify same here on week 11-1/2 now. lot of pain from last 3 days. i had 98% supra, 100% subscapularis and they have to cut bicep tendon and attach it to humerus bone. some work at Labrum. i am not allowed to do any strenthning exercises yet, but i hurt myself doing things at home.
Donna once again your videos are on point. I am almost 13 weeks and a few steps behind you. Thank you for all your encouragement and support during my journey. I am ready for 16 weeks now and looking forward to seeing where you are at 20 weeks. thanks again
Thank you for another informative video, Donna. I start my journey tomorrow morning. You've given so many helpful hints and recommendations that I feel very well prepared for the post-op period....and beyond! Since I am single and live alone, I have overnight coverage for the first four nights/five days and hoping after that I will figure it out. Lucky to have four sisters and many friends to continue to pop in on me and help after that. Thank you again!
I'm so glad you did this series. I'm about to have this surgery next week. I've learned a lot about adjusting my expectations from watching your videos. Some of the things you cover - I had no idea! Thanks so much for sharing this!
Susie, I will pray that all goes well tomorrow! That's great that you have hospital coverage to stay overnight a few days! My best advice is to stay on the nurses to give you your pain meds on time. If they say you can have something every 4 hours, set alarms on your phone so you can call and tell them you're ready! Pain management is key and don't let them tell you they won't give it to you unless you're at a level 6 on the pain scale because by that time, you are already behind on being comfortable. It's really the first 1 to 3 days that you need to be diligent. Good luck!
Thank you Donna! Your videos have been helpful and reassuring, especially during the days when I don't feel like I am making much progress. It's a lengthy recovery for sure!
hi donna. It's been years since you had your surgery but i wanted to say how much i appreciated your videos! Hope you are fully functional by now and giving others hope! I'm 6 weeks post op and doing well for the most part.
Hello Donna. I’m at the 16 week stage and it’s so interesting to compare where you are to where I am. I’m really struggling with abduction and adduction, just about getting to horizontal. And yes, all the knots and tightness in the lats! Like you say, keep going, don’t give up! A third of the way through!
I can't express my Thanks enough for your videos! I'm at 10 weeks and come to you for reassurance, comfort and inspiration. Your information is very helpful. I've been rolling around on a tennis ball for my supraspinatus (thanks for mentioning the tennis ball) that I had repaired and it feels great!
Thank you so much for your videos, they have helped me so much. I’m at my 16th week post surgery and my rom is great but I’m so surprised at how heavy and achy I still feel. Good to hear you talk about the up and downs of recovery. Sometimes I wonder if I will progress from here but you have just lifted my spirits. I just started playing golf again and the follow thru stretch on my right surgical shoulder is painful after only 9 holes, bummer. Now after listening to you I’m feeling hopeful. I appreciate you helping us through.
Bonnie, I am glad you are feeling hopeful. Trust me, some weeks it seems like nothing is happening and then all of a sudden there is big improvement. This is how it happens, slowly but surely! Hang in there!
Hi donna Thank you, im 13 weeks post op suprspinatus myotendenous junction tear repair, , pain is much better it occurs with certain movements, I rehabbing okay, my ROM is where about same as yours, thank you again for doing these.
My first surgery at age 66 on 6-4-19! The hospital part was totally professional and a non issue. I found these videos very informative and helpful so Thank you and hope your recovery is successful.
I'm 16 weeks post surgery this week. Your videos have been so helpful. I go to physical therapy 3 days a week. I started PT November 15th. I'm scheduled through the first two weeks of March. It's easy for me to get discouraged so watching your videos gives me a better perspective that this is an up and down process and longer than I anticipated.
Hello Donna, let me just say that I love your videos. I am 12 weeks post op rotator cuff and bicep tear surgery. I too am always concerned with my lack of range of motion and strength. I see my doctor next week for my 12 week follow up. My surgeon was concerned with my stiffness and range of motion and said I may need an additional procedure to remove scar tissue from my shoulder joint. Watching your videos give me hope that I am not that bad off after all. Thanks again
Well good Steve! I am glad you are encouraged, and hopefully with continued PT, you can work through it. You may want to try cold laser therapy that can help with scar tissue. A number of PT offices have them.
Hi again Donna. Tomorrow makes 17 weeks out for me. My supraspinatus massive tear couldn't be repaired so all I am getting is 50* side lift so far with a lot of stiffness. My infraspinatus massive tear had minimal repair done due to damage, I'm at 75* on the front lift. also subscapularis and labrum tears and bicep tenodesis. They did other stuff inside the capsule. I can't do any of the lifts you're doing. Still in pain. It is a long process. Thanks again for your uplifting videos. You're a warm, pleasant video natural. I'm sure you are rolling along with your post healing now.
Hi Donna :) Thankyou so much for posting this! This gal was teary eyed watching, not sadness, but with relief and pure joy! I am 59 years old and at 16 weeks post-op and you have given me hope! EVERYTHING you shared about where you are at, is where I am at also! PT, home stretching, range of motion and soreness is getting better s l o w l y. PT help with stretching is a plus and I am greatfull to go twice a week. Cupping and short massage really helps too. I have less fear and worry now because of your video :) I am following you now also. A very grateful follower. THANK YOU!!!
Donna, Thank you for your videos and advice on recovery. I have surgery today and am so ready to get the process started. I am a bit concerned because I am 67 and the first doctor said he did not operate on anyone in their 60's and above. It seems our tissues get thinner with age and we do not always have enough to make the repair. I am in really good shape and work out three days a week. I am prying I do as well as you. I know I will review your videos to follow my healing process. Thanks again!
Hi Donna I find your videos very helpful 1 am having my rotator cuff surgery on Monday 14 October 2019 Yes I am anxious But you have put my mind at peace Donna thank you so much
@@funmakingmoneyify Hi Donna Thank you for asking Actually it 12 weeks today Monday 6 January 2020 since I had the surgery Its getting less painful thank god But I have a very long way to The surgery went well I has a massive tear on one of my rotator cuff muscles Where it completely tore off because of a fall I had I feel off indoor steps hitting my left shoulder very hard to the ground I have started physiotherapy I have had 4 session the surgeon gave me 8 sessions But I know I will need a lot more I am having the sessions once a week And exercises to do at home Donna once thank so much And I hope that you recovered completely
I have the same issue. Surgery on right foot, right elbow and now right shoulder... left has golfers elbow! Agony. Just finished a round of methylprednisone still no better! It to balance back spasms can't be done. 😣
Saundra Kielborn Saundra try Acupucture, it works great for tendinitis, swelling and should help with your issues. Ps I-had my shoulder fixed 12 weeks ago and I’m feeling better each day.
I am at my 16 week and I never went to the physical therapist so I was nervous that I wasn't making the progress that maybe I could have but after seeing your video I am probably a little bit further along certainly not behind but the clothes and that made me feel great thank you for the Post
You have been the second person that I watched recover from this surgery. It has been very informative...I have my surgery tomorrow morning and I am a bit nervous.
Tim, I know it is scary, but you will be fine. Keep me posted on how you are doing. Ice, ice, ice, and stay on top of the pain medicine the first 3 days.
Well, I am at day 13 and all I am going to say is I HATE THIS SLING! And, what most people had not complained about was the nerve block. I am sure it was a great thing to have done, but post op was awful. Not being able to feel my entire arm, especially my hand, drove me completely nutts. When the block had completely worn off, the pain was a warm welcome...lol. My Dr. had to use 5 anchors and I have 5 incisions with 17 staples. In addition to the rotator cuff repair, he also had to repair my bicep tendon, I was pretty messed up...my supraspenadis was almost detached! I really do not have ANY pain except at the incision sites. I have been off all pain meds for about 5 days. My first post op appt is in two days and I cannot wait.
Tim, you really had a mess in there didn't you! I'm glad to hear that you do not have much pain. Now you just have to be patient and let your body heal!
Well...update: I had my second surgery on the same shoulder 9/12/19. I went back to work 4.5 months post surgery the first time 1/03/18...ya, I know! One thing I have to say is that this time, two weeks post op, I have zero pain and only took the pain meds for two days. It is like the surgery never happened besides not being able to move my arm. Taking it sloooow this time, there will not be a 3rd surgery!!!
Donna, I am grateful for your videos as I prepare for my own surgery, probably in December. I had a left hip replacement back in February and while reaching to stuff a pillow behind me in bed, I think I did the tears in my left shoulder. I had neck surgery 10years ago, and have a rod in my neck and thought that the anesthesiologist for my hip manipulated me and hurt the neck surgery somehow. Instead, I tore my rotator cuff. I have also had both knees replaced3 3 and 4 years ago, and might have had smaller tears started while using walkers. I had fallen a couple of times, too, which I am sure didn’t help the shoulder. I am no stranger to long recoveries or pain...but, during all my PT, I’d chant, “It’s only pain, it’s only pain!” In rhythm with my exercises, and managed to not notice the pain very much...till after. I feel reassured that I will get through this surgery too, now that I have viewed your videos. I am 68,but trim, and able to exercise, now that ¾ of my major joints have been replaced! Thanks for your can-do attitude. I have researched every surgery, and listened to testimonies for each, and your single-person testimony is very thorough, and combined the equivalent information of several separate patients I had listened to into one concise informational sequence made by one person. I am presently only 7 months post hip surgery, and am at a place most people want to be at a year. I expect, due to your wonderful information, to be able to be ahead of the game with my shoulder. I dread the neck pain, as I have a good deal of it now, and expect to be in a recliner as you were for a couple of months...I did that when I had my neck surgery, so it won’t be new. However, presently, I find sleeping in my bed more comfortable, and am really hoping I will be able to continue there after the shoulder is done. I can more easily relax my neck there. With a rod in it, sleeping in a reclined sitting position is not a possibility. The sleeping is my major concern, but, at least your video has given me an idea of what I might be facing, and I have time to devise a way to sleep, even in the recliner. Anyway, thanks for all the time you took to do the videos. I looked for the 20 week one, but, I guess you haven’t made it, so, God bless you to reach your goal of full recovery by one year. You’re determined and positive, and I am certain you will succeed. God bless you.
Mammyduck, well you have certainly had your share of surgeries! I hope that you continue to improve and the you shoulder surgery goes well in December.
I’m really thankful for your info Donna. Just came from my post surgery dr. appointment and was discouraged to hear that I had to wear the sling for another 3 weeks.(ugh!) this has been just over 2 weeks since my surgery. He says since they had to install a couple of screw anchors it would take a while. Your video is therapeutic for me at this stage. I will hang in there and not give up.
Peter Vargas how are you going with your shoulder now? I'm at the same stage as you and I still have pain and am still on pain meds. 7 weeks in and it's still real painful to move and I get the odd stabbing pain. Have you experienced anything like that?
These are great videos! I will be having surgery in a couple more months so I'm taking in all the info I can now so I'll be prepared. Your videos are super encouraging and informative. You keep it real, which I really appreciate.
Lots of sensible advice. I had my surgery January 16. I now go to physio once a week, but do physio twice a day at home. It is a long journey and you can't rush the healing process.
thanks so much for your video it has been encouraging thru the journey to repair. I also had a rotator cuff repair 3 anchors and bicep tear Doc says severe tear each time I go in.... My surgery was 6 months ago this end of month . This surgery came at an unexpected time my shoulder just plain wore out. I have been a hair dresser since 21 yrs and am active 68 year old. I went back to work 5 weeks ago working part time 3 days. Still do exercise at gym and home ..... again paying it forward sharing your video ...........You are a ROCK STAR will check back to see how you are doing girl power hey!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the video, I'm at three months and have some pain in my forearm and lats. I'm glad to know that it's normal. I'm considering getting a message and seeing a chiropractor. I was discourage that I am still having some pain, but I realize people heal at different rates and one has to be patient.
Thanks for all of this. I'm at 14 weeks and I'm so relating to the roller coaster comment. I was making great progress and then a couple of weeks ago I started getting a really bad knot in the muscle behind my scapula every time I try to push the range of motion, so now I have to back off and let that subside. Grrrr.
I'm at 16 weeks and have the same ROM as you. I use smart relief Tens unit and haven't taken any pain meds for about 6 weeks. I think I experience weather pains but its ok. Lifted weights before surgery and second lifting exercise I could do 80lbs for 3 sets x 10. Traps are still tight though. Thanks for the video👍
I’m at 16 weeks and doing great. No pain and almost 100% range of motion. I suggest lots of the best ‘food quality’ multiple vitamins, as well as humic liquid minerals. I’m a firm believer in supplements that zero in on repairing muscle and bone. Do some research and find out what works for that. I also recommend’ ‘light’ weights with high repetitions. Done slowly. This is what has worked for me. Good luck!
Hi thanks for the honesty in your video. I'm 47 male. in construction. do have very good range at this time. i really appreciated your comment about being a roller coaster on recovery. about two weeks ago felt really good. low pain. but in last two weeks with getting into weighted pt, i have been in a lot more pain, pretty constant. has discouraged me a lot.im trying to keep my mind set on the long term of this.
Allen, it sounds like you are doing too heavy of weights. I was always told that if I had pain the next day that I over did it with my therapy and to back down. Talk to your doctor about it, or your therapist. You may want a second opinion with another therapist. Good luck to you!
I going through major shoulder problems and most likely going to have to get rotator cuff surgery, and Im very nervous but these videos do help! still waiting on second MRI and most days I can't even move my shoulder and in constant pain, hoping for relieve some day soon!!
got results today, I have a chronic labrum tear, as of right now I don't need surgery, just lots of pt and if I still have pain after a year of pt then surgery would be reconsidered
Oh wow! So did they tell you that tears never heal? I'm guessing that they want to strengthen all the muscles that support your shoulder to see if it can provide stability. If you find that you dislocate your shoulder ofter or continue to have pain (especially while sleeping), that they will recommend surgery. Good luck to you!
I have always been able to pop my shoulder in and out of place, sleeping is the worse! I get between 2-6 hours every night, can't sleep flat, no range of motion, they said if it continues for more than a year then surgery will be consider
I have to have both of mine done. Got to have reconstructive knee surgery done first sometime this year. Then the rotator cuff surgery. Not looking forward to it.
I appreciate your videos. I’m on my second shoulder in 6 years. Both shoulders had different damage and both recovered differently. Im at 13 weeks now and sleeping normal is not so great.
Hi Donna, I wasn’t able to finish my comment on your 1st video. It’s so great to hear your progress and understand the steps. My original question is about my husband’s upcoming surgery. He thinks he will be able to attend a public city council meeting the day after his surgery. From listening to other’s videos - and yours - it sounds like that will be impossible. How soon after surgery until you were able to leave the house and go for a ride in the car?
Brenda Conyn Brenda I had surgery 12 weeks ago. The day after my surgery I was happy just to sit and rest. Did your husband make it to that city counsel meeting or did he rest too.
I’m only 2 weeks into recovery.. did your bicep hurt often.. I had a bruise after surgery... now my bicep gets very sore occasionally. Any info? Thank you
Samuel Mayers, I don’t recall my bicep hurting, but my arm was also immobile for the first 6 weeks. After that I remember my forearm being really sore. Ask your doctor if you are worried. Good luck!
I'm at 12 weeks post-op right now. I love your comment about a "rollercoaster" of progression - I can really relate. This is really where patience comes into play! Harder to see improvement at this point...but trying to stay positive!
Glad your surgery went well. I had my surgery in February. I had complications due to being on blood thinners. My shoulder blew like a shoulder pad. I was in extreme pain for 8days. I couldn't move in the least without pain on a scale of 8_10. Very little sleep. Miserable to say the least. They tried to drain it with a needle. They couldn't get hardly any blood out. Even with pushing the area around the needle. Major pain. What came out was like syrup. All this and they couldn't repair my rotator cuff tear. Too.much damage. Just my luck!
i am at 16 weeks...and boy what a difference. i have almost full range of motion...still can't reach behind myself very well. i had a painful rubberband like difficulty going up and down a wall with the exercises. it was a barrier to push through. that has disappeared. i am almost pain free. sleeping better. i have been out of my working job almost 6 months. we are working on strengthening now. still no more that 5 pounds. they still won't ok me to mow the lawn. i threw a football once the other day. but alas was not okayed for that either. that's frowned upon because it uses multiple movements. you know how when you go on vacation for a week you don't want to go back to work??? well i've been out for 6 months and am dreading going back. again thanx for all your input. you have been a joy. i have waited til i was at your week number to listen to your videos. i have passed the time binge watching entire tv shows and karaoking 3 times a week.
Bob, I'm so glad to here your progress is going well! Karaoke?! Why don't you post a little of your singing on UA-cam?! And yes, being out of work for 6 months would make it very difficult to return!
I tried to lift a 28 lbs suitcase. With the help of my other arm of course. This happened on Aug 18 2019. Today is Aug 23 and I still have pain. So yeah don’t do that.
I'm at 14 weeks now and have full range of motion back but the stiffness is still brutal. i thought it would have been all better by now. Some days the stiffness is much better than others but its always there. Its crazy.
16 weeks for me post op and feel like I've got pretty decent range of movement back (like many others here who have posted, the behind the back reach is the most challenging of all), but I have been pretty darn discouraged about the the upper arm pain levels I still experience when doing my therapy exercises and in regular reaching for items in the course of a day. I am keeping my physical therapy exercises at home about 15-20 minutes a couple times per day...which is the direction I got from the PT after sending me out on my own at 8 weeks post op. Wondering if I was to up the time and number of times i exercise, that i might make more progress with pain. i am very jealous of those of you reporting you are pain free at 16 months!
Donna Westermeier : thanks for the positive vibes! Feel much better knowing I am in good company! Thanks for taking the time to continually scan and answer responses to your older videos!!!
Lance Clark Lance I’m hitting week 12. Here’s one for you, I can fully reach behind my back but have a hard time raising my arm up. My therapist says it’s lack of muscle in my arm leftover from the sling. This operation is so frustrating. I am still sleeping in the recliner, still to painful for the bed. How are you doing? All your pain gone?
Does it just feel tight, or hurt to try and get the range. I tore two cuffs and my bicep tendon, complete tear on all three, Ihave full range of motion three weeks after my injury. I'm so tempted to not get my surgery this Wednesday. Im so stuck of not knowing what to do now.
It is both after surgery. You may have the range but do you have the strength? I was told that if I do nothing that I could tear all of the tendons and then need a complete shoulder replacement.
@@funmakingmoneyify certain positions I don't have full strength because it still hurts at that halfway point in certain positions. I'm going for surgery tomorrow morning, I need to just get it over with. Its hard for me because I live by myself in the mountains with no help except 8f someone comes by from 45 min away to help. It's weird, because I already had two partial tears in both shoulders from some years ago and this one hurts less with 3 full tears.
I just had an MRI after a fall and the MRI read that I had a full-thickness tear of my supraspinatus tendon with a 9mm gap in the muscle. I have found it easier to sleep with my arm extended behind me while laying on the couch. Is this a normal sympton? I see an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow.
Donna, I'm loving the videos! I was a very active 45-year-old and rotator cuff surgery has bummed me out for sure. I'm at 12 weeks and my therapist is trying to break up scar tissue so the doc doesn't have to go back in. After watching your videos, it seems like we are on the same track, so I'm relieved. SLEEP is terrible!!! I'm tempted to get back in my recliner once a week just so I can get a solid night's sleep! At what point could you lift weight? Doc has taken away anything heavier than my coffee cup for now. Thanks again & happy healing!
Lisa, I think by 6 months I was incorporating some weights but I am not positive. My videos should say. I so relate to your comment about sleeping on a recliner to get better sleep. I am two years out now and have full range and 85% strength. It is my non-dominant arm so that arm was never as strong as my right. I can sleep on my back no problem but still cannot sleep on my surgery side - it's so strange.
What I didn't mention in the video is that sleeping is better when lying on my back. I no longer use a pillow between my arm and body, but I cannot sleep on my left or right side yet without is being uncomfortable and aching.
Hi Donna: Thanks you again for your videos....you have no idea how much support they have given me..feels like no one really understands the ups and downs of this recovery...I tell myself to be patient ...this is curable and I don't have a horrible disease ...my shoulder was feeling pretty good last week and I decided to do some resistant exercise with a personal trainer. I am a pretty active person and I was itching to work out or do something other than working out on my stepper. My physio gave the ok to start exercising but of course I over did it😞 Had my 14 week appointment with my orthopedic surgeon and he was not too impressed ! He asked me what possessed me to start doing resistance training !, felt like an idiot. I did not do any permanent damage but I think I set myself back weeks ....no stretching for a week and back to the ice and pain meds. I was so upset with myself and trusted this new trainer who I had given all my medical history on my shoulder and exercises I could do. Anyways I felt like crying because my bicep and shoulder was stiff /sore and crackling (fluid) I felt like I had just undone 12 weeks of healing I am starting to acceptance that this is going to be a long journey and I can not rush the healing process.
Hi Donna, I'm having my 2nd surgery 17 years later at Stanford University this coming May. I have a cadaver graft this time since my tissue is soooo bay. Thanks for the videos as a good reminder of what I did and what I can expect. Best wishes to you. BTW, my rotator tore again 5 years ago just doing normal things and I tried to live with it which made it worse over time. Be careful and best wishes to you.
Great video, im at 16 weeks,my PT said I'm making really good progress and range of motion is really good, but some days I get aching and soreness and my strength is really not there, they have me working only with 2 proud weights, I'm hoping by 6 months the soreness and aching will subside
I am 10 weeks past my rotator cuff surgery but i am still in severe pain. Am I the only person needing something stronger than a tylenol?? Could something be wrong?
Another question I am 11post..I fell like 2 weeks ago..and not it still hurts...also I do alot of overhead work stretching as well as lift wood and other lifting what is normal protocol for being able to do this..also I can lift my arm straight up..thanks so much
I think that is a question for your therapist as we all heal at different rates and it also depends on what you actually had to have repaired. Good luck to you!
I've been struggling with my shoulder for about 10 years now... it keeps popping out about once a year for various reasons and doesn't seem to be getting better. I'm considering getting surgery and was wondering if you think surgery will lower the chances of it dislocating again? Or is it mainly for range or motion and less pain? Because if it doesn't actually reduce the chance of dislocation at all then I rather focus on rotator cuff exercises to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles as much as I can and avoiding most activities.
Viet, that is a question for your doctor, but most of the time a repair stops the shoulder from that continued dislocation. I know it did for my son. Mine never dislocated on me. Struggling for 10 years sounds like it's time to get something done!
Howard, yes, it is perfectly normal what you are experiencing! I would encourage you to see a chiropractor and you will absolutely love getting a message!
Hey Donna, first of all, I just want to let you know your posts are always up building and encouraging. I'm approaching 16 weeks next Thursday and I am no where near where you are. I know you say not to compare, but man!...I'm still wondering when this pain is going to subside! Makes me feel like there's a whole different problem going on with me. I've had my Dr order another MRI on my neck and upper trap areas and he took Xrays too, but all normal, thankfully. But I can't figure out why my neck, upper traps, and sometimes the shoulder itself are still in pain. It's not a sharp pain, but a very VERY deep achy sore pain. I get massages monthly and they help a little. I'm even at the point of going to see a pain management specialist because I am at my wits end! Ugh! I'm going to soon be seeing a Dr who does spinal decompression and laser therapy to see if I'm a candidate for that because I'm still in so much pain. Sorry to vent on your video, just a bit frustrated. 😣 Were you experiencing anything like this at 16 weeks?
Rachel, I'm so sorry to hear this! I still had a lot of tension in my neck, pec's, lats, and traps at 16 weeks. It took a very long time for that to subside. Would you consider acupuncture?
Thanks Donna. Well, I feel somewhat relieved that I am not the only one that has all this tension and pain in my neck and traps. They cause me headaches too. I am hoping this pain, tension, and stiffness goes away soon! I tried acupuncture and boy oh boy, it did not go well. I started hurting even more later that day, my husband had to take me to the ER. They gave me Naproxen and a Valium shot. Did nothing! I have other intestinal gut issues which is why my body does not work with prescribed and OTC pain meds, especially N-Saids. Good news is I think I finally found a different doctor (Chiropractor/Physical Medicine Dr) who knows what's going on with my particular situation. It's called Upper Cross Syndrome aka Cervicobrachial syndrome, Cervicalgia, among other things like pain in the thoracic spine. I'm sure you're like, "What?" I was too. It's a mouthful. Before my surgery and before the fall I had that led to the surgery, I was working in a stressful banking environment for approx 14 years, in which I definitely created bad posture issues and would either have to stand or sit for about 9 hours a day, 5 days a week, sometimes 6. Anyhow, that along with the fall and the surgery has put great tension on my neck which radiates up to my head and I get very bad headaches, my traps, back, and shoulder areas are very tense and hard. So I'm getting treated for this now. This is a very expensive and intensive therapy, so I am hoping and praying this is what is going to get me out of pain and give me my life back. I guess I'm one of the "lucky" few who did not have such success after this surgery so hopefully if anyone reads my reply and is having similar issues, I recommend going to a Physical Medicine place who will help you get out of pain. It's gotta get better... Donna, I apologize for putting such a lengthy reply to your post. Just wanted to fill ya in. I am so glad yours did not go this way. :)
i'm in my 7 month also, but i don't feel like i will ever be able to do what i use to! but i also have nerve damage in my two fingers and the palm of my hand. not sure how bad yours was, i had a full thickness tear.
@DonnaWestermeier I had my surgery 5-21-19. I go to physical therapy 3 times a week. I see the progress from when I first got it done but now I feel like I hit a plateau. I still can't fasten my bra either. I am where you are in this video. I have not returned to work yet either. My job is extremely physical. I'm kind of getting discouraged because I thought 3-4 months I would be back to full duty, but I'm not.
@@jaerich02 , well what is your definition of normal? LOL! It really took almost 2 years before I didn't even think about my shoulder. I would have to say that the more physical your job, the more you are going to see that it takes more time to resume. Boy what we take for granted when our body works the way it supposed to!
@@funmakingmoneyify lol to being able to snap your own bra in back normal. I work with lifting heavy luggage all day for a living. The end of this month will make 4 months since my surgery and eventhough I've been doing physical therapy 3 times a week, there's no way I'll be ready for lifting by October yet.
omg I was SO glad to see your video! I am exactly where you are at 16wks and getting very discouraged! And I see people who did so much better like you said. Sleeping in bed is still very uncomfortable, and excercise is difficult and I cant figure it out . I went to the mall for 3 hours and was so wiped out after and my legs even hurt! I think it's from all the sitting I've done to ice , etc. My whole arm hurts like you said too. btw - I found a wooden back scrathcher to help itches! :) I have one of those massage "GUNS" That actually helps if someone is around to do my back for loosening up knots. I am just so frustrated. I didnt expect pain this late on .
Donna, I’m at 4months post op, surgery date was December 13, 2019, and I keep wondering if there’s something wrong as my recovery is not as good as I was expecting, no full ROM, started strengthening and is not improving, although COVID situation closed all clinics in second week of March, so no RMT and pressure point therapies from my physio, started telehealth physio April 1, feeling my recovery is plateaued, and I watched your 5 and 6 month videos and saw you had a setback. I work in a grocery store and am not back to work yet, feeling this is going to take longer than usual given the world situation 😫
vivian leggett, unfortunately it probably will take longer than expected. Having the therapist be able to physically manipulate the shoulder is a big help and unfortunately you’re not able to do that with the current state of affairs.😢
Hello everyone. I am 14 weeks post op Rotator cuff repair. I have great range of motion but have popping and grinding on elevation with elbow away and external rotation. Any chance it's not repaired or is it normal? Can I try to keep rehabbing through it or should I stop for a while?
Talk to your doctor about the sharp pain. Maybe there is an exercise that you are doing that is too much for you. Also remember that everyone's experience is so different.
I am 8 weeks out and having same issue. Physical therapist said I should get a TEMS machine and that has made a world of difference. I found a good one on Amazon for about $160.
i'm in my 7 month also, but i don't feel like i will ever be able to do what i use to! but i also have nerve damage in my two fingers and the palm of my hand. not sure how bad yours was, i had a full thickness tear.
I am at 9 weeks i had rotator cuff full tear Labrum surgery and bicep full tear surgery and one more thing pain is up there at times hope i get there one day
Thanks Donna you videos have help me so much my surgeon and there team wouldn't return any calls only talk to pa and his assistant the pa said she didn't understand what was going on with me so I was like okay can I talk to my doctor she said pretty much that she's the best I am going to get so anyone looking for a surgeon if u think you might want to ask them a ? Make sure there willing to give you time I couldn't even get thirty seconds on the phone or in person this is after being given the wrong exercises to do I did first excerise three reps in with nerve block I couldn't feel my arm or shoulder but the third rep I got the most wicked paini have ever had the past call three hours after I call to tell her and she said we don't want you to do those ask why said I had good R O M first appt still hurting which is normal ask again why I wasn't doing excesices they said my injury was really bad didn't want me to move it three weeks later ask said I have had two different answers about the exercises I was told to do and caused me so much pain what he reason this week he told me they don't do those exercises anymore for like a year with all the money he makes hes the sports orthopedic surgeon or a pro team which I learned doesn't mean anything you couldn't print new papers or put a line thru why couldn't you call me back was never told which I thought was bull shit or he wasn't told because they were told not to bother him if you lasted this long thank you Donna sorry I don't use puncuation and my spelling sucks am on treadmill nine weeks out I am doing therapy once a week and bottom line I hope he did a good job
I am contemplating rotator cuff surgery in the very near future. I have really benefitted from your videos. I know what to expect week by week, good grief, I am no watching your 16 week video. I had hoped to be good as new by then but guess not. I am 68 will be turning 69 about the time of my surgery so hope my recovery is not slowed by age. I dread the thought of it but cannot keep hurting like this forever. Thank you for your information and sunny personality.
Gives me hope. I am only 12 weeks after surgery and I will say I am very discouraged. So much pain all the time, sleeping is horrible and I hurt even more after physical therapy. I am very depressed
Robin, don't be discouraged, it will get better! It took a very long time for me to be comfortable sleeping in my bed. Honestly, it really took 2 years before I felt perfect! 12 weeks is still very early in the process even if it doesn't feel that way to you.
I hope you've had great success since this post. I'm at 13 weeks now and these videos gave me encouragement. I think you turn a corner around this time and it is a roller coaster not an even ride!
GRAZIE !!
Donna, thank you for sharing your journey with us. We are grateful for you.
Donna, I can't compliment you enough on your informative recovery videos!
Every body, surgery and situation are different. My journey has been much the same as yours (even though I'm a bit older).
I'm at about 12 weeks and was getting discouraged. Thank you for reminding it is a process...
You are welcome Vicki! Hang in there! The worst is behind you!
You are so welcome Christina!
Jane, thank you for your post, and you are most welcome! Good luck to you in your healing process.
Thanks so much! Am at the 16 week mark, after total reverse shoulder reconstruction. Will " hang in there" after your encouragement!
I am 8 weeks post op and 5 weeks of therapy. You are further than I am. I am using you as encouragement
Mandie DeFazio was t
I really appreciate your videos. They give me hope.
You are welcome! That is exactly why I made these videos - to help others learn what to expect and how they can prepare.
Hang in there Laura!
Jessie Kaufman, you are welcome! I wish you continued success in your recovery!
I’m so glad the videos have helped you! Hang in there!
I am 16 weeks and am doing great. Played golf three times since well 13 with no issues. Gets better every day. Use of bands is really helpful.
Having my surgery in 2 weeks....your videos inspire me. Thank you.
Dee Reed, good luck to you!
@@funmakingmoneyify thank you so much... The 9th is my big day... any other last minute advice😊
Dee Reed, just have everything set up for where you will recover and pre- make meals!
@@funmakingmoneyify will do thank you... You are such a blessing to us!
Thanks again Donna for these videos! I have just reached 16 week mark and your videos are very helpful :)
Thank you it’s discouraging when you feel like you should be further along. I needed to hear that. I seem to be progressing at a similar pace
Oh man, all those "moves" that we took for granted!!!
Mykal Tee, I am sorry to hear that everything could not be repaired!
You are right about it being a long process! Hang in there!
Hi Donna :)
Thankyou so much for posting this!
I have less fear and worry now because of your video :)
I am following you now also.
A very grateful follower.
THANK YOU!!!
..... only a third of the way?!?!...
Joyce, I am so happy to hear that these videos have helped you! It is definitely a marathon and not a sprint in the healing process. Hang in there!
Marty, I’m sure you will do fantastic. It pays off to have taken good care of yourself!
Hi Donna
I find your videos very helpful
1 am having my rotator cuff surgery on Monday 14 October 2019
Yes I am anxious
But you have put my mind at peace
Donna thank you so much
Mary Lynch, you are welcome! How did the surgery go?
@@funmakingmoneyify Hi Donna
Thank you for asking
Actually it 12 weeks today Monday 6 January 2020 since I had the surgery
Its getting less painful thank god
But I have a very long way to
The surgery went well I has a massive tear on one of my rotator cuff muscles
Where it completely tore off because of a fall I had
I feel off indoor steps hitting my left shoulder very hard to the ground
I have started physiotherapy
I have had 4 session the surgeon gave me 8 sessions
But I know I will need a lot more
I am having the sessions once a week
And exercises to do at home
Donna once thank so much
And I hope that you recovered completely
Mary Lynch, hang in there! It sounds like you are moving in the right direction! It is definitely a long process!
OMG, you’re the first person Ive heard talk about tennis elbow, I’m going next week to hopefully get a cortisone injection, one major pain is enough!
Out 16 weeks, too! You are spot on! Thank you!
Week 12 for me. Missed the first 5 wks of pt. Playing catch up killing my left elbow with tennis/golfers elbow! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you
I’m really thankful for your info Donna.
You are wise to prepare yourself for what is ahead. Good luck to you!
Thank you for sharing. This is very helpful. I am almost at 16 weeks.
Love your videos, 7 weeks post op….happy to hear there is hope 😊
There always is hope Ana.❤️
Lots of sensible advice. I had my surgery January 16. I now go to physio once a week, but do physio twice a day at home. It is a long journey and you can't rush the healing process.
Very true Peter, it cannot be rushed!
thanks so much for your video it has been encouraging thru the journey to repair.
So grateful for your videos. I’m dredding my surgery on 3/29/24!
You’ll be fine! Keep me posted as to how it goes.
Thank you for your insight !
Grrrr.
Carol Wenom , I know it’s frustrating but hang in there! It will improve!
David Ahders, wow! It sound like you’re doing well!
Good luck!
Great to hear how well you are doing!
I'm having such a bad day. I'm at 17 weeks. Watched you video and it gave me hope. THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT💓
Shawnshine, you are welcome! I’m sorry that you were having a bad day, but each with day you can feel amazingly better. Hand in there!
Donna I wish you continue recovery
God bless you
I going through major shoulder problems and most likely going to have to get rotator cuff surgery, and Im very nervous but these videos do help! still waiting on second MRI and most days I can't even move my shoulder and in constant pain, hoping for relieve some day soon!!
was it your right or left shoulder??
It sounds like having surgery would cause some major relief for you! Keep me posted.
got results today, I have a chronic labrum tear, as of right now I don't need surgery, just lots of pt and if I still have pain after a year of pt then surgery would be reconsidered
Oh boy, I’m so sorry. That’s a lot of surgery. All the best to you!🙏🏻
I appreciate your videos. I’m on my second shoulder in 6 years. Both shoulders had different damage and both recovered differently. Im at 13 weeks now and sleeping normal is not so great.
I was told that the side lifting r.o.m was the hardest/slowest to rehabilitate. I've really been encouraged by your vlogs. thx! 😁
Yes Bella, that is true. It is a long, slow process!
Donna was your surgery to your dominant shoulder?
@@KimberlyEckert-r8i , no it was my non-dominant shoulder.
Brenda, I left the house 1 week surgery but the car rides can be a little tough if it is bumpy so I had to really brace my arm and shoulder.
Good for you! Hang in there!
Do you still have stiffness? I'm at 22 weeks post op and still really stiff some days.
how are you now is it good full motion?
Yes, it’s great!
Donna did you have a full thickness tear of the infraspinatus tendon?
Actually, I’m not sure!
Oh Raul, I'm so sorry! I wish you all the best the next time!
i am at 16 weeks...and boy what a difference. i have almost full range of motion...still can't reach behind myself very well. i had a painful rubberband like difficulty going up and down a wall with the exercises. it was a barrier to push through. that has disappeared. i am almost pain free. sleeping better. i have been out of my working job almost 6 months. we are working on strengthening now. still no more that 5 pounds. they still won't ok me to mow the lawn. i threw a football once the other day. but alas was not okayed for that either. that's frowned upon because it uses multiple movements. you know how when you go on vacation for a week you don't want to go back to work??? well i've been out for 6 months and am dreading going back.
again thanx for all your input. you have been a joy. i have waited til i was at your week number to listen to your videos. i have passed the time binge watching entire tv shows and karaoking 3 times a week.
Bob, I'm so glad to here your progress is going well! Karaoke?! Why don't you post a little of your singing on UA-cam?! And yes, being out of work for 6 months would make it very difficult to return!
nurse bob sings i feel good and nurse bob sings break on through.
I tried to lift a 28 lbs suitcase. With the help of my other arm of course. This happened on Aug 18 2019. Today is Aug 23 and I still have pain. So yeah don’t do that.
At what point are you allowed to start running if you're a runner?
It's been a while so I don't remember exactly, but I think it was around the 4 month mark. Your PT should be able to tell you when it's okay.
I'm at 14 weeks now and have full range of motion back but the stiffness is still brutal. i thought it would have been all better by now. Some days the stiffness is much better than others but its always there. Its crazy.
@@ClayLud , You will get there!
Wondering if I was to up the time and number of times i exercise, that i might make more progress with pain. i am very jealous of those of you reporting you are pain free at 16 months!
oops! 16 weeks ...not 16 months!
@@lanceclark12 , 16 weeks is really early and I would think that most patients are not "pain free" at that time!
Lance Clark how are your pain levels now?
@@cindyrella24673 , oh that’s so tough to be alone! I hope you have a lot of meals frozen to make it easier. Good luck to you!🙏🏻
Thank for sharing ur journey with us I'm at 7 was u give me so much courage
Hi! I'm exactly where you are. Do you also have a lot of popping and cracking especially when lifting your arm?
Vinny, no I do not/ did not. Ask your doctor or physical therapist if that is normal.
Jo Jo, I am not sure. That is a good question to ask the surgeon.
You are fun to listen too.. the mosquito, etc lol.. I’m at week 9 now it is definitely a roller coaster like you say!
Ahhh, thanks Ron! Hang in there!
Thanks ,,,,Im 10 WEEKS Post surgery,,Its a slow process ups and downs
Yes it is!
Anyways I felt like crying because my bicep and shoulder was stiff /sore and crackling (fluid) I felt like I had just undone 12 weeks of healing
I am starting to acceptance that this is going to be a long journey and I can not rush the healing process.
Do you still have pain? I’m at 15 weeks and I still have a lot of pain snd stiffness
No, I am great now!
Mary Ann, Everyone heals so differently. That is a good question for your doctor!
Rachel, thanks so much for posting! It is good so that others can read this and learn from you. Check back in and let me know your progress.
Donna, you mentioned the Arnica in the first video, did you find it helpful and if so how long did you take it?
Kelly, I feel like it was helpful and I took it until the bottle was empty.
i'm in my 7 month also, but i don't feel like i will ever be able to do what i use to! but i also have nerve damage in my two fingers and the palm of my hand. not sure how bad yours was, i had a full thickness tear.
Please don't get discouraged! This is a healing marathon, not a sprint! It does improve, I promise!
@@funmakingmoneyify cool! How long did it take you to get back to normal?
Jaerich02 , most likely it will be at 6 mos or even longer! That is a good question for your physical therapist.
omg I was SO glad to see your video! I didnt expect pain this late on .
also, have you slept on that shoulder yet?
@@amydavison1877 , hang in there, you will progress!
Torry Vladic, it’s best to ask you physical therapist this question. Good luck to you!
Also when u went for 12 week check up ..did u have any restrictuons
I could still not lift heavy things.
God, I remember watching your videos 4 MONTHS AGO... Wow, 4 months seems like 5 years ago with this surgery.
cancontrl , LOL! So true!
I'm 12 weeks out and I'm still in a lot of pain. I'm concerned that my repair may have failed. The pain is still sharp and in the rotator cuff region

I did not have any nerve damage and had partial thickness tears but 4 of them! You will be surprised by how much you recover; it just takes time.
So glad to hear this in week 15 now. PT 2 a week and a cold fromt came in and it was horrible. Thanks for sharing. My ROM is close to the same.

All of this Donna. I'm 16 weeks and have the same range. Good to know that's 'normal', whatever normal is after this surgery! 🤣
Lisa Jackson LoL! True!
I had my surgery at 75 Jennifer and I am doing very well after 14.5 weeks. Regained my range of motion mostly and no pain now.
