Personally, I don't care about the edition size, and believe everyone should be able to own the statue they desire. While I understand the frustration behind it, I hope we are all buying statues we care about, and not for their edition size. If the product is selling noticeably higher then expected, why not make more of it? Everyone wins.. well.. resellers don't. I can say for myself that I'm quite new in the hobby in regards to buying, and have missed some of the pieces I would still like to own. I'm definitely not going to pay twice the price or more for it on ebay, or buy the resin of it on the same site, although I have to say that I bought every piece I have under the market value, because no one is buying so the prices always drop. My suggestion would be to follow recent Batgirl as an example, "TBA" so everyone who like it are able to purchase it and all is well. After, put it on the waitlist until you fill the next batch.
I hope they do it more! I'm here for my favorite characters, not to flip statues; low ES's just make things more difficult for me, both in rarity and cost.
I’m not understanding how a company making more statues than they originally planned is unfair? If it was less than what they originally said I’d get it but, more is the opposite of a problem
I don't care, at all, about Edition Size and I don't consider it a "slap in the face" if they increase it. If it sells faster than expected, they yeah, they should make more available for those who want it. You should buy a statue because you love it and want it in your collection, not because you think you can make a profit by flipping it. The company should care more about making another 200 people happy than they should about upsetting a small portion of the 100 who only got it because of the small edition size. They could put an * beside it, saying pending demand, but even then, I don't care. I purchase because I love it and I want it in my home. I love the idea of passionate collectors getting a second chance to bring a piece into their homes without having to wait for the secondary market and paying even stupider prices for it... if they can even find one.
I might be in the minority here, but doesn't affect me since I buy to keep and never care about edition sizes. I don't flip statues for profit. But I can understand why collectors would be upset.
Weta do it best. Limited edition statues have a time period during preorder and at the end of that time an edition size is set based on orders. Once set thats it. Once its sold out its gone. Alternatively they have open editions which doesn't mean unlimited but there is no specific ES.
Great video Chris. Thanks. I think Edition Size matters much more to flippers than to real collectors. I've always been a fan of "Made to order". Reveal a prototype and the number of preorders they receive within a specific order window, that's how many are going to be made. Period. Once a company announces the edition size, they should stick to it. Just my opinion.
The studios are a business and sticking to ed size is to collectors but new or more customers turn up, the studios don’t want them to shop elsewhere. All customers are important to their business.
That's an interesting topic here. Sometimes companies are allowed to sell only a small quantities of a certain item due to licensing agreement. Hence the low ES. Some set a low ES for a certain product to create exclusivity. Some companies in Japan like to impose restriction on certain products that only allow preorder within Japan. Some set a low ES for a certain products, but create a variation of the product like a different color scheme later on. Normally companies will have a gauge on the market sentiment already before setting the ES. This situation can happen only in the statue collecting world cos' every statue is uniquely numbered. So in rare cases where preorders far exceed the ES, they may announce a change in the ES to benefit from it. And yes I think those that are pissed off are those that bought it for investment purposes. For normal collectors they will be grateful they can get it during preorder.
I mean, in this current economy if a company has the ability sell more items than originally projected.. let them make their money. I get it, we see companies as faceless entities, but its more work and money for those factory workers as well. Personally I've been statue collecting for close to two decades now... Exclusivity or edition sizes dont really matter to me anymore. At the end of the day I just want admire my cool new item on my shelf. And Im happy for everyone to experience that joy as well... be it increased edition sizes, reissues, or variants. Thanks for the video. Happy collecting!
The anime figure collecting scene has been doing something similar lately. Companies will initially list a figure as "limited and exclusive" which while they rarely had an exact number cap, once preorders closed it used to mean it was never coming back. But in the last couple of years suddenly a lot of "limited and exclusive" figures have re-released, making the whole tag feel pointless really. Just a way to generate FOMO in a scummy way. I personally don't care about the number of figures, I buy based on whether I like something or not, not how limited it is but its never fair to push false scarcity onto consumers.
In my opinion if a company set an ES is then the company should never touch that ES. Done is done. I'm not a collector that buys purely for a low ES for example. But I know that some collectors do. Sometimes you see that they release a variant to get an extra amount of pieces. Another thing that bothers me more is the batch system and the fake almost sold out FOMO. For example Batgirl PF Batch 1 710 dollar, Batch 2 720 dollar. Mister Sin batch 1 645 dollar , mister Sin batch 2 650 dollar. Will Batgirl batch 3 be 730 then 🤷🤷. Like an ES, I feel that when the price is set, the price is set.
A lower ES is nice, but it's not a huge factor in my decision making process. In this situation, once an ES is announced, I agree they should stick to it.
The statue companies should first do a preorders of their pieces for a given amount of time, say 2-3 months. Once that time is up, then they set an actual ES amount, and stick to that. The ES should always be a percentage of what was sold.
Editon size should be TBA during the preorder period. If a company has publicly stated an ES then that should also be followed. However, if there truly is a statue that became way more popular than expected during the preorder period and they want to produce more, they should give the original people who preordered an exclusive switchout for no extra cost. So if I preordered a Batman statue with an original set ES of 100 but after a little while they increase the number to 300 but also notified me that I would be getting a never before seen battle damaged portrait for free, limited to 100, then I would be perfectly fine with that.
I do not agree with augmenting ES, but to create profit I do think making more of a statue is OK. The extra should in those cases have alterations made to identify them as "outside of the original ES" such as a simplified base, no swap outs, change in paint, etc. We do want the company to be profitable so that they continue to make us statues. They just have to practice good business ethics while doing so. My 0.02.
Well at the end of the day, it’s a business, and it’s a tough business. We have seen some of our favourite statue companies already go out of business. I think a happy medium would be to make the “bonus edition” as “locked in” for those crazy collectors, so they can kick off the statue, and make as many as you want of the standard edition. You can’t actually make any statues until you’ve sold enough for the seed money to break even.
The business is on a down hill slide. I think the producers have set this course with only one outcome. It began reasonable and hias eroded in the last several years. What began as a very enjoyable hobby is a shadow of what it once was. The sense in all of this comes from companies looking to keep it very affordable but that I’m afraid isn’t in the cards.
This is definitely shady business practice. As a consumer, I would have less trust in a company that does something like this. They clearly just care about profit and not how their business decisions affect their customers. It should be a healthy balance.
Oh, you want to be one of the only ones that gets one and no one else should have a chance to get one. That’s the thing that’s unethical. Scalpers and people who think they’re entitled. People like you are why the collector market is the way it is.
On the other hand, maybe if they don’t get greedy, they won’t stay in business and then they’ll be no statues to buy from them. They probably don’t lose much sleep about flippers.
I think that if the item hasn't shipped yet, the ES can still be considered "in flux" even if originally defined during pre-sale, but once it starts shipping, once the ES has been documented (written, stamped, engraved) on the pieces, then that ES needs to be set and not changed. Any additional units needs to be documented as a new version (ex. 2.0), and ideally something should be changed, such as the shade of the color paint or lack of previous swap outs. There's a Superman vs. Darkseid statue from WB/DC Direct that I believe had 3 reissues, but each one changed something slightly or was identied in some way to not be from the original ES. To be clear, I'm not referring to variants though which I consider to be a new item with their own ES. The same goes for items of different scales or rescaled reissues later on. Those should be separate items with their own ES as well.
I agree especially when a collector preorder when it says low stock remaining For example Arkham City Poison Ivy was canceled and then put back into production with an ES of 150 I preordered her a second time on January 7th at Prime 1 studios when it said low stock remaining I wanted it regardless but I suspect many collectors would be upset if after Prime 1 reaches 150 that they out of the blue increase the ES
I agree there is a discussion to be had whether people feel it's right or wrong to change edition size. I disagree that this particular example is greed. It seems more a situation of a company trying to survive in a very difficult time. They have served the community with such beautiful, high quality statues, I would rather they survive.
We can kina say the same thing about a "collector" that buys a statue just to resale and make a profit, you can call that greed. I've said this before, it's my opinion that collecting should be for what you love and want to keep. I can care less what the valueof my statue is afteri buyi. If anyone is making it a business then they can't complain about it, business is business. My 2 cents.
I think if you wanna change the edition size so be it, but dont take the NRD and keep it on someone if it bothers them and they want to cancel now, i personally do like edition sizes and so on, its more of i have something most people do not. ECC is best for that i feel, they say they will make up to a certain number and sometimes dont even get to that number. i am in canada and a few ECC pieces i am the only person who purchased the item in my whole country as when chatting with distributor was told the purchase logs of where each purchase went in the world. so its neat to have 1 of 55 or 56 in the whole world.
I get exactly where you're coming from good customer service with these companies leads to more people buying from you and in this economy where you're spending 7 to 10 dollars for a dozen eggs people are not out here looking to spend that type of money if they don't have good customer service from the people that buying these statues from
I think you should buy to add to your collection .not what you can get back on it .collect for the beauty of the statue .cars devalue over time .houses .hot toys etc .if you want a beautiful piece buy cause you canand love it .there any pieces i would love to own .but will never but i ok with it and enjoy what i have less is sometimes more.great topic
Doesn't bother me, I couldn't care less about edition sizes. If you statues or anything else as an investment you're taking a chance that's the nature of investing in anything, sometimes the value goes up sometimes it goes down.
This channel and its followers are sometimes so misguided and hypocritical when it comes to opinions on what statue companies are doing. When it comes to new color variants you don’t care, when it comes to size variants of the same color most don’t care, and now when they change edition size you do care? Everyone - I’ll likely be the minority (again) but the edition size changes not only when they change actual edition size but ALSO when they do the same statue in another size or color. Edition size is pointless if they can keep reissuing a statue with small changes. ***The best practice would be to list all variants and edition size upfront and not change it.
Here’s another take on this subject. Let’s say 2 out of 5 statues sell out during pre order. All that other inventory is taking up space/money at the warehouse and will have to be discounted to sell which affects the profit margin. How would you feel if prime 1 goes out of business? So in that aspect I’m good with them doing this.
If a statue company changes their ES after ES number is set, customers who purchased prior to the ES increase should have the right to return the statue. Scarcity creates value. They’re literally lowering the value of customers investments which is essentially stealing. It’s a factor to why some people buy a statue in the first place. This reminds me of them padding shipping cost. A slippery slope that appears born from greed. Perhaps p1 is hurting financially? They should issue a statement to people to let us know if this is truly the case. The problem is, the trust is shaky after padding the shipping cost was found out. If they keep this up, I’m not sure how I’ll feel when I look at my prime one statues :-/
What you're talking about is called false advertising . It's literally no different than ordering a Batman statue and receiving a Superman statue , whatever the website said upon purchasing / pre-order they have to deliver every detail that the description says including edition size ! .....
It's funny reading about some of these comments, I don't care about ES sizes because it's me me me, comes first.. Don't care about the collectors, and the same thing is happening in today's politics ..😢

I totally get where you're coming from! It's frustrating when companies label something as "limited" only to reissue it later. It really takes away from the excitement of collecting.

I agree , same for me. I throw the boxes away too… if I resell, I don’t care what I get.
Only Flippers care about E.S., personally I don't care either way !
That's why I'm easy,easy like a Sunday morning !😂❤❤😎
Stop purchasing statues like they are commodities.

They did that with red hulk 175 to 350.
Never saw that, what statue had this happened?
Are we talking about a certain company or statue?
What company are referring to? Sideshow does it all the time.

At the absolute minimum, offer any of the buyers/ preorders the ability for a penalty free refund.

I'm totally 100% leaving high end statues alone for good.
