What Exactly Is WOKE CINEMA?! (And Why Do Some People Hate It?)

  • In this new on-going series, we will examine the current political climate surrounding all things “woke” when it comes to the cinematic arts. Are Hollywood studios pushing an agenda? Is this creating a division amongst us peasants? Is it even possible to critique or watch a film without politics coming into play anymore?
Our hot shot team of dedicated researchers may have found out that things might not be so black and white… Pun intended? Who knows anymore?! It is an exciting and scary time to be making and watching movies but that type of chaotic environment allows this medium to experiment and grow. Controversy can always inspire conversation and that’s what we are hoping to do with this new show.
I believe it was the Disney+ flick Peter & Wendy that responded with a “So!?” when asked why The Lost Boys were not exactly Boys. And I believe it was South Park’s Cartman who, while poking fun at Kathleen Kennedy said, “Put a chick in it and make her lame and gay.” Sooooo…. What did she mean by “So?” and what did Cartman mean by “Put a chick in it and make her lame and gay.’? I don’t exactly understand all of that but do I understand LAME. Trust me, I identify as lame.
Like it or not, in the minds of many, the definition of “woke” has changed to mean “lame”. It used to be cool. “Stay woke” was seen as a battle cry to fight injustice and bring equality to the people. But the phrase got overused to the point of parody and social justice morphed into a business and even almost a religion. Wokeness began with the best of intentions but evolved/mutated/transitioned into something well…lame. The definition of the word lame is “uninspiring and dull”. That is what many of these new films and characters have been feeling like… uninspiring and dull. Unfortunately, many of these new dull sources of art and entertainment fall under the category of “Woke”. This unfortunately creates a connection in our collective minds that “woke” content equals “lame” content. This word “lame” also means “unable to walk without difficulty” which is what’s happening to Disney and other studios, who seem to be doubling down on the pandering of “wokeness” in their content, rather than quality entertainment.
Context is key when a film is labeled “woke” and it depends on who is doing the labeling and if the movie is good or not. “Lame Wokeness" is very forgivable when the film offers other “cool” cinematic aspects. You got Good Woke, Bad Woke and Ugly Woke and somehow the Good Woke is overshadowed by the abundance of Bad Ugly Woke… which is lame…. and confusing… but that’s why we are trying our best to tackle these issues. Cinema is still a relatively new tool for artistic expression and we are still making mistakes when it comes to how to tell the best story in the most effective way possible. This new call to arms for our content to be more woke or less woke is the next frontier to explore and who knows what we will find in this new wild wild west of wokeness.
At first, “Woke Cinema” was all about telling new stories from new points of view from people who may not have had their stories told in the past due to actual hate and discrimination and racism or sexism or any-ism you wanna ism. But maybe those good intentions went too far, lost focus and began to feel forced, done out of fear and almost hateful themselves; creating enemies out of lifelong allies and supporters. Was it intentional or an accident? Not even the most perfect of teenage rocket scientist Mary Sue Jedi can answer that.

The problem is changing characters for the sake of changing characters.
I don’t want a black Superman to try to please me. I want them to explore other ESTABLISHED characters that are badass and just waiting to be explored like blue marvel or bloodwynd!!
Blade not only showed no one cared about blade being black but helped open up the lane for good comic movies.
I don’t hate aliens because sigorney weaver was a women, I love it because it took a scared explorer and turned her into a harden soldier and alien hunter. Not just have a woman just moonwalk on the scenes and make men look inept and pathetic.
When you shoehorn shit in., it’s obvious, pandering and pissed me off to no end because it’s too widespread and lazy.
Dont get mad when you tell people this particular movie isn’t made for me but for this group of people and then not only do we not show up but your target audience doesn’t either.

Way to talk for almost 9 minutes without coming out and saying... anything.

    • @liminaut-ek5iw
      @liminaut-ek5iw 13 днів тому +1

For real. Nine minutes of the most superficial analysis imaginable on this topic.
We can talk about whether or not some example of representation was handled well or not, and there's probably more examples of flawed, mishandled, and/or otherwise shitbrained representation than good ones in mainstream media. That would be a potentially productive critique. We can complain about bad storytelling, sure. Neither of those is what complaining about "wokeness" is all about. The term "woke" currently exists, not to communicate or clarify, but to conflate and obscure. Be wary of language that hides rather than reveals.
Hollywood does not give a shit about politics. Hollywood filmmaking is a business, and it's 1000% about making money. Advertising and media companies didn't appropriate feminism in the 90s and reduce it to that toothless "girl power" aesthetic with its associated product lines because they cared about empowering women or dismantling the patriarchy. They did it to sell the same shitty plastic dinguses, now featuring cheap pink paint. Similarly, the term "woke" was appropriated from black American culture -- where it actually referred to becoming aware of systemic injustice, something this video barely addresses -- and repurposed it so that even the slightest and most surface-level appearance of liberal identity politics is linked with shitty storytelling. Linguistically linking the shitty storytelling with the representation of underrepresented identities is a hell of a trick for reactionaries because:
      1) It allows people to complain about the representation (an illegitimate complaint) while appearing to complain about shitty storytelling (a legitimate complaint).
      2) It gives people language to react negatively to something without having to actually examine themselves or the causes of their reactions. There's an awful lot of unexamined bias out there, and now that's all armed with a magic word that makes people feel like they're making a critique instead of having a reaction.
      3) The shitty storytelling problem now gets framed as a problem with catering to minority identities (i.e. targeting an audience of anything other than cisgendered heterosexual allistic white people, something you can now call "pandering" so it sounds like a bad thing) instead of what it really is: big studio execs controlling creative choices and only greenlighting stale IPs and the same three extremely broad rehashed stories over and over because capitalism. This is a boon for reactionaries because it makes it seem like Hollywood is failing by trying to be socially responsible in a progressive sense, which is both hilariously and depressingly wrong, but it's also great PR for Hollywood.
Actually, can we talk about "pandering" for a second? I don't remember hearing anyone complaining about "Independence Day" or "The Patriot" pandering to American patriots. I don't remember anyone complaining about The Passion of the Christ pandering to Christians (well, I remember complaints more about using antisemitic tropes to do so, but not about the pandering itself). Are these same people also complaining about movies that pander to white people? What makes "woke" pandering different other than the intended audience?
I would just love to challenge anyone complaining about wokeness to merely be more specific. "Woke" is a vague term that hides many possible meanings. If you have story complaints, please complain about those. If you think some form of representation was mishandled, please complain about the form of representation. If something bothers you about how a particular audience is being targeted, unpack what's wrong with it. What's left of "wokeness" to complain about? Seriously, genuinely, honestly, I'm asking: what's left in this knock-off version of "wokeness" once you tease apart the rest of that?
Politics that are not liberatory do not exist to serve the people. Beware the wolves in woolen disguises.

I don't remember who said it, but the problem isn't a movie starring a female protagonist being "woke," it's when that female protagonist is poorly written. Alien & Aliens aren't "woke" because Sigourney Weaver is the protagonist, but they are great movies where she's an iconic hero because she is a well-written protagonist. The Sequel Star Wars Trilogy aren't "woke" because they have Daisy Ridley as the protagonist, but they are bad because they are poorly written & inconsistent quality behind the scenes regarding Rey's character development as the protagonist.

So even with an ideology I agree with, I am repulsed by it when it is disingenuous or low effort. I feel the same way about movies that have other ideologies I agree with (i.e. strong women) and ideologies I do not.
The problem is when people making these movies are either a) doing it as an obvious pandering or b) (more often IMHO) are so far in their own social religion and want to evangelize it that they don’t realize most people aren’t impressed.

Eventually it was pointed out to me how racially diverse the characters were, that it was what made the show good. But it never occurred to me the character's races mattered in the first place. I barely noticed them before, and now I couldn't un-notice them! 😅
    .
I heard the same thing after watching the movie "Everything Everywhere All At Once". I loved the movie for its heartfelt story and characters...and then I hear it's great because "it had Asian representation". It's THIS kind of wokeness that's annoying, this idea that featuring a marginalized identity group in a show or movie automatically substitutes for a good story and characters (it doesn't). A lot of it has to do with intent. Many will outright admit they just don't like men or white people. They assume the audience is beneath them and needs to be "corrected." This leads to a boring predictable checklist of smug far left ideas that don't reflect reality. You don't want girl bosses bitching at useless men the same way people wouldn't like a film with a male protagonist who overtly treats all women like crap.

    • @liminaut-ek5iw
      @liminaut-ek5iw 13 днів тому

Nobody is saying representation "substitutes for a good story." That's a straw man. Representation for the under-represented is good, full stop. You can praise shitty movies for their representation while also critiquing them for shitty scripts. A thing being good in one sense doesn't "substitute" for it being bad in another. However, Everything Everywhere All At Once was great for representation AND for just being a great movie, so what exactly are you complaining about? That people praised the representation at all? I'm kind of puzzled.
It's hard for people who see people like themselves everywhere in the media to understand the importance of representation for those who don't. How simple that seems, on paper, is part of its deceptive difficulty. It's not an easy thing to wrap your head around if you don't experience it yourself. Luckily, there's a workaround if you put in a little effort: you listen to people with different experiences than yours.
If you're worried about people assuming you're "a conservative," it would probably help to dig a little deeper into the issue and stop spitting their reactionary talking points.

As your example-videos are all Hollywood-based: Check out European and Asian films (an get used to synchronization! I did that all of my life!), they don't give a crap about that North-American woke-BS.

There was a white guy who commented when I was explaining why people were throwing the term woke at Turning Red (I'm also confused bc I don't remember a white guy in the film): It's mostly for having characters that treat every white male as if he's completely incompetent and useless, there's often an obvious agenda and message involved.

    • @ailo4x4
      @ailo4x4 24 дні тому +5

not a new phenomenon. look at TV in the 70's where every 'Dad' character was incompetent an outmatched by the Mom and daughter characters. My father was incences by "Eight is Enough" because that dad got no respect and was a nincompoop (his words!). Was that a bad thing? When you look at the previous generation of TV/Cinema like Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best, My Three Sons, etc., where the dad was always right...I can see the blowback need for change. Is it the same now for cinema? Probably. Here is something that I (CIS white male 'JonesGen') learned from the "good" woke world and think it is absolutely appropriate here, "When you are the majority, equality feels like oppression." That is what I hear every time I click on a channel of driveling men bemoaning the fate of the world because women, gays, handicapped, etc. are taking places alongside, and (gasp!) ahead of 'normal' CIS white male characters. "Go away now...", (in Scottish accent. If you know, you know.)

I used to think that it was all about people not liking being preached to, and I still think that's part of it, but people don't like the idea of a character or story hinting that _THEY_ are wrong. People love all sorts of shows and movies with a hero (Or even a villain with good points) monologuing about what's wrong with the world. Hollywood has given us so many morality plays, that it's almost baked into the process. I think people don't like characters or stories, they might have otherwise enjoyed, saying "We're not cool with you or how you think". 😅 Honestly, I can't pretend that I don't understand why that would bother people. There are great movies... characters that I admit I love, that would never allow me in their world.
😂I love The Godfather as a franchise, Sonny Corleone as a character... But I don't think he would have anything to do with me outside of giving me a bad deal on a Cadillac. This fight over woke media though? A lot of the arguments on both sides are pretty lame. People that argue it are as uninspired and misguided as the corporate media they're discussing. We started splitting into teams, and supporting everything someone wearing our team colors said or did. No matter how stupid...

That's what makes things different just because somebody makes a movie and aims it towards a certain audience doesn't mean it's going to appeal to everybody. But also on the same note if you want to see something that appeals to you then go seek that instead of asking people to change the story to better suit what you think it should do. You can't take an established idea and twist it to make it something else. You have to have it made originally, or not at all, period!

Representation and inclusion matters. But when it's done poorly and with little actual thoughts and heart going Intuit people notice. I think that's what make all this come across as preachy disingenuous and tacked on. It's almost like they are speed running through a checklist to make sure they take all the boxes that they think supposedly would appeal to people. As a queer, disabled and person of color. I wholeheartedly appreciate when I see people who look sound and have similar experiences to me on the big screen. But like I said previously I love it when it's done with care and respect and we're not reduced to some token checklist and I really really appreciate when they give characters feeding the categories I just mentioned a full-fledged purpose in a film along with personality. I think people too often toss around the word woke, especially nowadays it's just become like a buzzword inclusion and representation matters just make sure you do it right please😊

  • @miguelmelo1814

I think the issue is that woke movies are becoming a product to be exploited by the big companies, without really caring about building a good script or message. At least when it comes to cinema. Good woke movies are still being made, specially in the independent circuits, however when it comes to plain all thrills and chills the message or impact gets lost in bad writing and corporate bad intentions. And most importantly, if you don't want to divide an audience, please don't be preachy. A good message can be relayed without preaching. Just look at a show like Ted Lasso, brings in the messages it relays however through really well fleshed out characters.

Within the endless storytelling potential of science fiction it’s always been a great vehicle to explore issues of inequality and alternative and unique points of view. Doctor who is a brilliant case in point. In the early years of the reboot it used stories like Dalek to challenge our thinking about our moral perspectives as a spieces and it did it with a masterful subtlety . Later episodes have lost this fine art. I think it’s a shame that the first female doctor had such poor scripts to work with. I thought she had great presence but generally bad writing.

However, once you start shoe-horning in people who either can't act, or aren't the best choice for the movie, simply for the sake of trying to make a point about racial, gender, or disability equality, you've gone too far. I think the biggest two that impact me... The Star Wars Sequels, and She-Hulk...
I was totally on board and forgiving of the Mystery box from Abrams (even after 2 Trek movies that were clearly him making Star Wars) about Ray... but when I finally saw The Last Jedi, everything became clear...there was no story here. Which ment that all the negative things you could say about casting choices for ALL the new characters, were entirely possible, because they did not have an idea of the story that they wanted to tell.
She-Hulk disappointed me when she started breaking the fourth wall, and her Legal Firm work was gonna be played more for jokes and used for "clips" (see; shorts, trailers, tiktok, etc). There was absolutely no substance in that show, and if Disney+ did to that show, what it did to Willow; I would thank the Progenitor Dragon Gods that we will never have to be subjected to anything established in that show... which, yeah, includes "Wongers", Daredevil, and Skaar.
    And because I mentioned it...
F**k Willow! I gave that show the benefit of the doubt EVERY EPISODE until I finished watching the last episode; even though with EVERY EPISODE I accurately predicted what was going to happen. But it wasn't until the last episode, that...well...I feel like it sqwated on my face, and shat all over me. I even rewatched the whole series a week later to see if I just over-reacted to the final episode, but... no, that was somehow worse! I dont know what these younger generations obsession is with destroying heroes and making sympathetic villains...
    ...but...
    Just stop it!
Or at the very least, if you're going to get these younger writers and directors... could you try NON-Americans? Like, John Boyega is multitalented in acting, writing, and I believe directing now? Maybe ask him if he has an original Star Wars idea, and let him do that? Maybe even with Daisy? She might have her own original idea? Someone whose...NOT...in the Hollywood sphere, and bound by American Political Agendas...
Because, do you know what? ...the rest of the world has its own problems, and your Gender-affirmation issues are not one of them.

That’s why there’s a “better safe than sorry” mentality these days and to a certain degree, I agree. Sure, you can do things without hurting anyone but you don’t want to bring back most of those things like the movie “Soul Man” or that one scene in the first “Revenge of the Nerds”. You can be a Don Rickles of the creative world but you gotta have the heart, the soul, the taste and the respect to do so. Don’t punch down for the hell of it, do it with a proper purpose.

It's been around so long and has been so ubiquitous that people don't even notice it's there anymore... but even today you can still be cancelled for breaking those rules on the wrong platform or at the wrong time of day.
Nowadays everyone is suddenly oversensitive and screaming about "cancel culture" if they get so much as a few tweets of criticism or if people don't laugh at their "comedy". That's not cancelling, that's free speech.

It's about writing, not whether it's "woke". If the writing is bad, the product will be bad even if the movie is nothing but straight, white men.
For example, anything you can point to about Rings of Power being "woke" will also apply to House of the Dragon. Strong female character, race swapped characters, dialogue about bigotry... both shows had this, but one of them was successful.
People complaining about things being "woke" are missing the shot by a wide margin. Maybe they mean the quality of the writing was sacrificed for the sake of representation, but as I mentioned before, you can have a straight, white sausage fest and still have a terrible movie or show. It has always been this way.

Yeah, I wish more people would complain about that instead; all the bad writing that we're getting. That was a problem even before we had so called AI writing the scripts. But it hasn't exactly become better since they started letting so called AI write their scripts. Bland, boring writing we might get if it's a good day. Otherwise it's just bad.

It is a shame that the term woke got co-opted because originally it was just about black injustices. Now it's anything too far left. It's pretty obvious what content has been more about pushing DEI than quality content
