It's sad... I had friends (They are no longer my friends) They were super WOKE. They were not bad people but eventually their woke attitude push me away. The saddest part is that they were always talking about wanting a change in the world. One day I heard about visiting a Senior Retirement Home that was low in resources. Many of this elders were abandoned by their families. I thought it be a nice thing to do. Take some food for them, play board games and chat with them. I invited my woke friends. NONE of them showed up for the event.
Which proves that they are just a bunch of fake a$$ virtue signalers.

You deserve better friends. People like that are all talk. They claim they want to make the world a better place, but instead cause more problems with their harmful actions. Most of the time, these activists are confused, narcissistic individuals who think being overly morally right makes them valid in the world. They feel better about themselves by "spreading awareness" and "exposing bad behaviors" because they lack the ability to care about themselves. That's why they harm people like the OP. This behavior isn't just limited to the woke mob either. Anyone can be a controlling monster with a severe lack of self-awareness.
The biggest problem with identity politics is that it focuses on what you are but not who you are. It focuses on the things that don’t actually matter and instead of bringing us together we’re more divided now then we’ve ever been. The only difference is that no one is subservient or in chains.

I saw Lord of the Rings, Two Towers today, with the current trend of woke media, it was incredible to see a movie not trying to be an allegory.
Tolkien _despised_ allegory and would be disgusted to see his work used as one in the form of Rings of Power
The entire Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogy are amazing watches. Pretty much the only movies of that length I can actually still tolerate

Tolkien specifically does not say that he "despises" allegory, but that he "dislikes" it. Despite that, much of his work, such as “The Silmarillion” and "The Lord of the Rings" is clearly allegorical.

I remember growing up we were told that “never judge someone by their skin colour”. Then, all of the sudden in 2020 it completely flipped to “If you don’t see my race, you’re racist”. I remember hearing that for the first time, and while I considered myself woke back then, I *never* understood it.
To this day I cannot rationalise why society suddenly decided that we must continuously comment on other peoples’ races. It blows my mind. Can’t wait to be done with this 🙏

I’m asian. I never once desired characters I enjoyed like superman, captain america, wolverine, batman, etc. to be asian. I connected with them because of their character, heart, personality, and journey. If you can’t connect with someone because their race or sexual orientation doesn’t align with yours, you have a lot of work to do as a human being.
Much like many white and black people felt a connection with Goku... and none of us wanted Dragonball evolution, lol. We knew Goku was asian and didn't care. Like you said, what matters is the connection to the character and their story.

Hong Konger here, I agree. I like Shang Chi because he's cool and for the character he is, not because he's asian. I like Black Panther because he's the King of Wakanda not because he's black.
So glad you mentioned the multiple hypocrisies and reverse sexism that is prevalent in woke culture. I've found myself playing older video games and watching older movies / shows just to enjoy content that isn't trying to push an agenda.

I'm back watching Dharma & Greg, a show about man's fantasies. With thousands of Harlequin books and Hallmark movies there is comfort in that we once had at least one show with a smart, successful male and a glad, empathetic, compassionate, nurturing and gentle female.
I've been trying to write my own content in order to entertain myself. It's hard, because I'm a terrible writer, but maybe I'll get better with practice...

Would like to mention that wokeness originally was, like other slang, a term we used to stay vigilant about the media reporting news, whether it was crime, economics, etc. when things got swept under the rug or forgotten after a few days. It wasn’t politically driven or some weapon used by politicians. It wasn’t something to identify mobsters of folks that attacked people for disagreeing with portraying race/gender/sexuality issues. While I do think they need to be talked about, there has been better ways of storytelling that has done this. There’s a reason a lot of these shows are getting canned for not the “Neo-wokeness” I like to call it, but just shitty, god awful storytelling.
They are one in the same, in most cases. "Neo-Wokeness" has killed meritocracy in many areas. Its no longer about finding the best writers or providing the best person for the job, despite how much Hollyweird and the MSM want to say it is, tbh in some cases it doesn't even seem about making money anymore. Its about conforming into the ideas and acceptable narratives that is pushed by "Neo-Wokness". Everything else is secondary. You have a brilliant writer that is male and white? Can't use them or else you're 20 kinds of ist and phobe, many places have filled themselves with ideologues who conform to ideals pushed by "Neo-Wokeness" and now have a severe lack of talent, as ability and skill no longer matter if you have the right "oppression" and adhere to the monolith. A large part of the awful writing is because the writers that have replaced the "Old White Men" who built the IPs they are working on into the massive popular products they are today, are woah-fully under-skilled and incapable of actually succeeding at forcing divisive and often times contradictory sociopolitical talking points into existing IPs and franchises, and in the process destroying the core of why they were beloved and popular in the first place. Resulting in disjointed, and in many cases nonsensical, interaction between characters and plots that the average person cannot relate to or find worth spending money on. Don't even mention the fact that thanks to "Neo-wokeness" the people who should be fired for gross incompetence and lack of ability have a convenient shield against all repercussion and criticism by just dismissing legitimate criticisms and general questions as "Hate Speech" or "Bigotry" this has resulted in a complete inability for major course corrections if needed, they just keep steaming along right over the cliff.

Yea, modern western societies has an issue with taking already established words and phrases to turn and mean something they simply don’t like.
“Stay woke” went from being vigilant against shady government doings and media, to now mean “progressive bullshit I’m against” …
It was called being “woke” because the idea was that everyone else was still _asleep_ and blind to what was happening. It was in reference to how the majority willingly went along with whatever like sheep, but somewhere along the line, it was co-opted to mean social justice issues. Woke now meant going back to sleep and going along with whatever was popular.
Much like how the general view on “conspiracy theories” went from being about topics not a lot of people talked about that could very well be true, to now mean “crazy bullshit no one should give the time thinking about because the government and my favorite politicians said they’re dumb” and making people out to be crazy nutters that even discussed them. It’s now become a way to shame and insult someone, notably those who have right leaning political views, by implying they’re a conspiracy theorist and making it seem like them talking about something will lead to another January 6th 🙄
It’s become a derogatory term, just like how “woke” has. Not exactly coincidental, imo.
The term itself is completely fine. Closing your eyes and following a long-established rhetoric isn't the best way. Nor is pushing a radical agenda without care for actual storytelling. Good storytelling can work with woke messages, just like any other message. It's just that the execution is absolutely god-awful. Take "The Truman Show" for example. It's woke in the way of critiquing the obession that pop culture has with watching the every move of a celebrity. Though it had a clearly woke message through critique of the culture of our time, it was executed perfectly. The message was subtle but equally prominent. More movies and TV should follow that.
The ironic thing is that the people who claimed to be "woke" (They were the ones who called themselves that at the start) are literally the opposite of the definition in the video, they are most like mindless machines waiting for their programming

The important part of looking at the woke entertainment is realizing that they're all a distraction for the disgusting nonsense going on behind things.

It also because many of the woke advocates in media does not share the negative aspects of lives that others do. Most of them are born into money, that' s how they can afford to work in media. They worked hard to get to the top but they did not have any good story to tell. All they know is their identities and buzzphrases from school. That' s why their works sucked. It lacked diversity of the human experience. Watching their works felt like listening to the preachings of a corporate human resources department and the whining of a spoiled teenage girl, not artists.
Malcom X called this out decades ago also.

As a writer, I find it more fun to write female characters with flaws, for example. I am writing a story where a modern day woman finds out that she is a witch when she is brought to the magic side of the world. Now instead of her being this all powerful being, I decided that a huge majority of her magic was sealed away and is slowly leaking out. Now she can get the seal removed however if she does her body either breaks down because it can’t handle the amount of power or she will go crazy and become something that husband will have to put down.

Encanto is "woke" done right.
It gives representation to the culture and people of Columbia. It brings attention to an important social issue (generational trauma). And it tells a really solid, entertaining story.
More media should be like Encanto.
The difference is that they created an original story instead of putting a latina or black girl in a traditionally white story, which infuriates everybody and is totally unoriginal. Telling the actual story of the culture is what makes it great, and I say this as a Colombian woman.

It's like saying that The Princess and the Frog (if it had come out at this time) is woke for telling a story of black people and then it's "forced inclusivity"... we'd be falling for the same thing as them getting offended by everything and not letting people make their stories There are other things that make it woke, when it's forced, when you change races, when you include activism and politics, etc.

My biggest problem is race swapping characters. As a black I feel pandered and insulted when an adaptation of my favorite video game race swaps people. If you have an edge to see black people in a zombie apocalypse write separate characters in that universe. It seems intentional and it’s come to the point where anytime I see a black personality on screen I have to ask why they’re there.
A good example of this is Barrett from FF7. As far as I'm aware he may be the only black character in that entire game, but boy, what a character! A single father fighting for a what he sees as a better world for his daughter as a vigilante and environmental activist who uses a machine gun for an arm to take on a mega-corp that literally rules the world. He's not trying to be anyone else, he's just Barrett. Now would you call that woke or just good writing?
Yes exactly, this reminds me of that girl power scene in Avengers Endgame. I'm sure that scene made some little girls happy, and that's great. The problem is they never set up those relationships, and it just feels so unnatural.

this is why I always gravitated to Anime and Manga when I was a kid in the 2000's and even got into 90's and 80's stories when I would have been a toddler. No woke nonsense there. And far more advanced in gender fluidity than the ridiculous circus going on here.

I am from the Philippines. The US was known as the entertainment capital of the world because it created so many great films, TV shows and comic books that I grew up with. The stories were powerful, the characters were unforgettable. I missed the years the time when life was like this. Unlike now, where everything has descended into madness. I grew up watching Justice League, X-Men, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Barbie Movies, Care Bears, Transformers. I enjoyed singing and listening to rock bands and boy bands, to divas and girl groups, to hip hop groups and film scores.
I cannot believe that I will be living in a time where even the use of pronouns would cause onslaught and every character in the pop culture is torn down right before me. The problem is woke media in the US is spreading their ideology to the rest of the world that they would even demand non-Western entertainment like the creators of anime and manga to do the same and that they would even want to censor it to please their so-called modern audience. France also resisted because these crazies are enforcing the use of their preferred pronouns into the French language.
Your discussion on the hypocrisy of that big corporation that bends backward for that oppressive nation that enslaves minorities and its own people while lecturing people in the US and around the world about slavery is truly sickening. In reality, the woke crowd is not the main market. These are just dumb, mouthy creatures who don't have any regard for other but themselves, nothing but a bunch of entitled individuals with twisted minds.
I grew up watching those, though I primarily watch Spongebob, Winnie the Pooh and Pokemon from 2007 to 2015. Heck, I even watch Hey Arnold!, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Kids Next Door, the Disney animated movies, and perhaps so many I can't recall anymore.
And like you, I am glad to see the woke culture dying out quickly along with these lolcows disappearing into irrelevance, because I had hoped that one day, the US would return to making stories that we could connect entirely.

I live in Hong Kong. When we saw all the local film posters and compared them to the ones in the west, where the movies originated, it was baffling to us. Most people here I know have no such prejudice towards groups like black people but they still felt the need to do it. I fully agree with this video, thank you for stepping up and speaking against this major social issue.

I think part of everyone wanting to be a freedom fighter is that a lot of people feel lost or without a purpose and they want to contribute to something. We’re constantly surrounded with stories of heroics and we learn about revolution in history and many people just want something to fight for even if it makes no sense
You make a good point. Unfortunately that desire to fight for something and lost feeling is a ripe target for psychopaths to take advantage. if your movement has tons of support from global corporations, mainstream media and government you should really ask why these psychopaths are aligning with you.

For sure, I also believe it’s a v American problem. When looking at my own country and other countries around the globe, we have centuries old cultures that we usually rely a big part of our identity on. Many white Americans unfortunately aren’t usually able to connect to that part of themselves, so tend rely more on politics, religion and wokeness to shape part of their identity. Us Dutchies tend to be blunt, open-minded, social and outspoken because it’s part of our culture. Well stated! I don't even bother with film adaptations of comics and PC games anymore. It seems the only films and shows that lack this "inclusivity over quality" are those that are original productions not "reimagining" anything. I find myself rewatching older films and shows more than recent releases.

You're right. 'Woke' is an old term that originated in black culture that dates back to the 90s, probably even earlier. But when you've got media pundits, politicians, twitter users, youtubers etc referring to everything they don't like as 'woke,' well...yeah, we got a problem where nobody can agree on a definition and the original meaning is obfuscated. Then again, this happens almost every time a slang term enters the popular lexicon. The same happened with 'simp'.

The problem is that people have never really minded having a gay character, or a black person or woman etc. As the main character. They just don't like feeling so damn preached too. They force these characters into the story in this very conveyer belt kinda way. They take already established characters and change them to be diverse. Rather than creating a new exciting character from scratch that just happens to be gay/black/woman, in the same way superman just happens to be straight (I mean it's not like it's focused on constantly and endlessly referenced.) He just is straight, every now and then you see him with Lois but the real focus is that he's a superhero and he's stopping the bad guy. They dont constantly crack jokes or bring up sincerely the fact that hes straight. He just is, and it just sits as background information. Everything else just kinda revolves around that.
Instead, they not only take characters and change them, but on top of that they DONT STOP TALKING ABOUT IT. It's an endless reference to it, constantly trying hard to convince you that it's OK that the character is gay or whatever, rather than just assuming it's fine and moving on to the story. They focus their stories around their diversified character, rather than just letting those traits orbit the central story. What you end up with is something that just comes off as lgbt/blm/feminist lefty propaganda instead of an entertaining and organic story. It's SO conveyer belt, bland, lazy, and everyone can smell it. I think THATS the real reason people are tired of the wokeness in media. It's not that they animatedly don't want a gay or black or female protagonists necessarily, they just don't want the writers of the show to behave as though the character HAS to be that every single time. They don't wanna feel like they're going through some weird re-education every single God damn time they sit down to be entertained, in order to treat their deeply horribly bigoted ways... you could easily write a story where the main character is gay. Just don't be all preachy about it, write a decent story for the character that is relatable to most people in some kinda way ( I'm supposed to relate to my protagonist every now and then, not just watch them make out with men for 15 minutes and then talk about how much they love making out with men for the other 15 minutes) thats literally it and I'm sure people would like it. The modern west is already very tolerant, they just don't like being preached to and that's why people hate this crap.

This also goes against the principles of a free society. If someone doesn't approve of someone else's lifestyle or doesn't want to associate with them BECAUSE they are gay, black or female than they shouldn't HAVE to. That is what being free is all about. The freedom to choose.

Being too woke can ironically be counterproductive. I mean look at Disney. On Disney Plus, there is actually a category that is called "Black Stories" that involves around movies and TV shows that have main characters who are black (even though most of the stories in the movies and TV shows that have black main characters don't involve around racism). People who promote things like that are contributing to a system that glorifies singling people out due to their skin color. So these people are ironically being racist themselves for doing stuff like that (which people like Martin Luther King Jr. were strongly against ideas like the ones that Disney is promoting).
They didn't just minimize Finn's character on the poster they paraded him around in a pee pee suit and had him yelling like a special needs patient for two whole movies. Never gotten over that.

Disney made a big deal about "diversity and inclusion", teasing that Finn would've been a Jedi. Instead they made him a bumbling, runaway space slave. How progressive!
Meanwhile, George Lucas treated his black characters with respect. Mace Windu was a badass Jedi Master second only to Yoda. Lando Calrissian was a ladies man who ran his own city.
The thing about Finn is that he was a perfect protagonist. He had run away from the stormtroopers. He had inside knowledge on how they worked. He would have been a shining example to the rebels as someone who changed allegiance once he realised the full extent of the atrocities committed by the Empire.
And he was the PERFECT foil to Luke. (Don't forget that Luke skywalker initially wanted to join their ranks.)

Most woke products coming out now (not ALL, but most) were indeed in the pipeline back when wokeness was thought to be profitable and the inevitable future. The pandemic delayed things for two or even three years on top of the normal production schedule. New shows starting development now are much less likely to get woke than something which was being developed in 2019 - 2020.

It depends on how its delivered, how the story is written and what the message is. But these "messages" aren't anything that are good at all, just ways to attempt to divide us as people.
well usually superhero stories are moral stories, and the people pushing the message dont actually have any morals, its why they have to hijack already established properties. and thats why the stories are stupid, because they dont understand morals.
Like how Star Wars (the actual SW, 1-6) had a message that was very political in nature, but it was one that any decent people can agree with; that a republic becoming a dictatorship is bad. Much different than the super nuanced, super controversial nitty-gritty social politics that Disney is obsessed with.
I mentioned something similar when I brought up Cobra Kai in my own post. As you implied in your post, the problem isn't with 'the message'. Shows like Cobra Kai is full of 'the message' but we don't consider it woke for multiple good reasons. If 'the message' was the problem, then pretty much EVERY story that followed the Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey template (from Star Wars OT to Terminator to Lord of the Rings) would be considered 'woke' since they all tried sharing a moral-related social message. So yeah, there's nothing wrong with the message itself. Rather, the issue comes down to whether the message serves the story/characters and how it's implemented.
To this day, Last Jedi still pisses me off because it shoehorned messages that had NOTHING to do with the overall story or its characters - you could literally remove all the casino scenes and nothing significant would've changed for the plot and, most importantly, the characters involved (neither Tico nor Flynn change or grow from the experience). In contrast, having Johnny and Daniel train a group of diverse kids from various backgrounds reinforces Cobra Kai's theme of FINDING BALANCE (a core consistent theme of the overall Karate Kid universe). Having a diverse cast makes absolute sense since 'finding balance' heavily requires opposing philosophies/fractions having to come together.
In the end, if a film is superficially putting in a message that has nothing to do with the stories and characters, then it's all performative disingenuous bullshit. At that point, it's woke. I think the real reason why so many people hate 'woke' content is because none of it is authentic and we all HATE a bullshitter. On the other hand, we rally behind Star Wars OT because, despite it's moral-social messages, it told a GENUINE story with a GENUINE message and didn't play us for a fool.

I have had some truly horrible experiences in life that a lot of these activists only say what if this happened to you just to make people feel bad when they don't need too and here's the thing with woke media that bugs me so. It's as I keep saying: a female main character can be good if she's written well. Japan does this really well, with lots of anime from all genres having good written female characters who are loved. Take Rey as an example of a badly written character: she is a Mary Sue, someone who talks for 2 seconds and suddenly is loved by all and can do anything in a single try. She isn't hated because she's female, she's hated because she is a Mary Sue.
What sucks with the concept of woke is how it is twisted in media when it means to be aware of the social issues, not to shove them into people's faces. Like so much LGBTQ without making them interesting or well done or just padding the hell outta it, or diverse characters but forgetting the character part. There has to be balance, because media can have social messages. Just don't freakin' forget things like story and good character.

So, what will the trend be for depicting gay characters after all of this? Like let's say a movie has a gay character in the post-woke era, because those will still exist, what will they be like?
I feel like there might be a return to the gay best friend as a trope, or maybe there will be something akin to will and grace where the gay best friend is actually a character in the story. Or maybe there will be a different era, like what 90's anime did, where despite a lack of representation overall, there were some shows super heavy in representation and stuff, and also some outliers like evangelion where the main character is bisexual but it's a very low-key element of the series.
But what do you think will happen?
@@joshraid1550 The problem isnt repressentation of minorities diverse sexualities etc, the problem is that majority of this movies are straight up bad, lazy written with poorly developed characters and producters tried to make audiences guilty for not enjoying it because "theres finally repressentation" (example she hulk or dr strange directors). A great told story will be great regardless of the color, sexuality, etc of the actors

I always did find the mind set odd to blame others for not buying, supporting, viewing things not pandered to them. yet they never once look to their own an wonder why they too are not financially supporting their (often demanded) changes to products. This is the sole reason its unsustainable as they don't buy into it after forcing pre existing things to be remade. Mentioning that they always want to change what exists instead of creating something new with their viewpoints in mind. I did find it interesting how quickly they went after CoD: Cold War' real life inspiration segment of the KGB officer note for note explaining how to divide a country ideologically let itself be dismantled by its own citizens 40yrs ago yet eerily on point at this very moment.
