The Good And Bad Of The Lord Of The Rings Franchise

  • Flashback to the holiday season of 2001. After years of filming, the first film in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, is due to hit theaters, and expectations are sky high. With all three films already shot and in the process of being completed, everything is riding on the first movie being a success because if it flops, New Line has got two more pricey movies they still have to finish (they were in a similar position to Disney with the Avatar films). But not only is The Fellowship of the Rings a smash hit but critics and audiences alike hail the film as a new classic. Overnight, Peter Jackson becomes one of the biggest directors in the business, and the Fellowship’s cast, which includes Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, and a then-unknown Orlando Bloom, become icons overnight.
Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy divides fans. While many were thrilled that Jackson and collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens returned to Middle Earth to film this adaptation of J.R.R Tolkien's book, more than a few fans felt the movies didn't live up to what had come before. Indeed, following up the Lord of the Rings trilogy would never be easy. Those films are regarded as modern classics, with the third movie, The Return of the King, even winning Best Picture and Director Academy Awards. How do you follow up a classic?
Indeed, there was never really supposed to be a Hobbit trilogy, with Guillermo del Toro initially attached to turn Tolkien's tome into a 2-movie tale. Eventually, del Toro had to depart the project due to ongoing delays and Jackson, to the delight of fans, stepped in as a director, expanding the project's scope to three films. While many wondered how Tolkien's slim novel would provide enough material for three movies, Jackson said they would be taking material from the appendices Tolkien published with Return of the King. Jackson also would be shooting the films in 3D using the then-novel HFR (High Frame Rate) technical, which meant the first film, An Unexpected Journey, would be the first feature to be shown in 48 FPS.
In the end, the films were all successful, but they played to diminishing returns. The film movie made over a billion dollars worldwide, and the follow-ups, The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies, would gross almost as much - but not more. While some fans loved the movies, others found them padded out, with each movie running close to three hours (the extended editions are even longer) and the 48fps technique getting very mixed reviews.

I think it’s important to note that the director’s cut of all three movies adds a lot of crucial content that was cut out of the theatrical releases. Long runtimes becoming even longer, I know, but for the real fans this is the way to go. We all loved the theatrical releases, of course, but once you see the extended versions, there’s no going back. They’re all on Max currently.

I prefer the original Star Wars trilogy (non special edition) myself, simply because I prefer sci fi but I can't deny LOTR is superior. Tolkien's depth in his world building and characters is unmatched.

What are we talking about here? Fantasy? The Godfather, even with the 3rd on being mid, is the greatest trilogy of all time. The godfather part 2 is the greatest movie ever made and the first is top 10 if not top 5 all time. LOTR doesn’t have a single movie in the top 50 ever made.

So this guy keeps saying how much he loves the Lord of the Rings movies, how he's seen them so many times, and yet he keeps getting small but important things wrong.
Like calling the Mine of Moria the Mines of Moira ... I mean I'm sure she doesn't mind her mine being name checked and all ;)
He also keeps calling Saruman's army, Sauron's army when they are two very distinct units fighting battles hundreds of miles apart.
He states Frodo betrays Gollum to save himself which he does not. He is just fine, in no danger, only Gollum is in danger from Faramir's men. Frodo saves Gollum out of pity.
Gandalf didn't steal the Palantir from Saruman, they find it in the wreckage of Isengard (in the book Wormtongue throws it from an upstairs balcony at Gandalf trying to hurt/kill him).
Frodo doesn't win the fight with Gollum at Mount Doom, he loses when Gollum bites his finger off and they both topple over the edge.
As I said, probably small details, but if they are going to include them in the video why not make them accurate?

What’s wrong with the Hobbit trilogy? Where to start?
It should have been 1 film telling the story in the book, not 3 films full of padding and crap that is not in the book! And having most of the effects done digitally makes the film look ridiculous! And adding characters that were not in the book (too numerous to count), added to the film’s ridiculousness!
It was all just shite! I couldn’t get past the second film. And I have loved the Hobbit since 5th grade!
I also loved the LOTR films! Extended versions for the win!
But the Hobbit films were a big disappointment for me. I couldn’t even be a completist, which irks my nerd values to no end!
I’ve stuck through to the end of some crappy series before just to complete them. But not this one.

LOTR series is my absolute favorite book series. It was my first book series I ❤❤read. And the LOTR movies are so awesome .And I owe it all my love for the books to my teacher .in our class we read the hobbit .then watched the cartoon.

You had a great teacher. I have been a fan too for some 30 years now. I remember when the Fellowship of the Ring movie came out and I didn't like it because it looked so different from how I pictured it from the books but by the Return of the King it won me over and now the Trilogy is my favorite. But I still detest the Hobbit trilogy 😂

Love LOTR trilogy. It’s the perfect watch every THANKSGIVING.
The HOBBIT suffers from blockbuster-itis with soooo much filler NOT from the mind of Tolkien. All your derision points are valid as the studio preferred more quick cash than a quality follow up. Probably why Del Toro dropped out as studio pressure increased

The Rankin and Bass animated Hobbit movie is perfect, especially for fans of the book. Tolkien wrote a bunch of songs in the book and in the cartoon they had Glenn Yarbrough sing them for the soundtrack. As a fan of the book I find it makes it that much better

"War for the Ring" is inaccurate & wrong. This phrase never appears anywhere. The only ones fighting "for" the Ring are Sauron, Saruman, and their assorted baddies. (Gollum too, I guess.)

I mean, if you're going to do a review of such a classic set of films, ateast learn how to pronounce the words correctly. It's not "we-ta", it's "Wet-a". And there is no such thing as the Mines of "Moyra"...it's the Mines of Moria.

LOTR was helped to GOAT status by what they took out the hobbit was affected by what they added
BTW on YT there is a fan cut called There and back again which at 4 hours tells the same story they took a 350 page book 10hrs plus in the extended editions to tell
if has not been deleted or taken down

Unpopular Opinion, but I really don’t like Return Of The King. It’s my least favorite of the LOTR trilogy. There’s something so off about it, and I was laughing out loud in the theater at it. Obsessed with 1 & 2 tho. And I mean obsessed. 3 just had this different feel to it. There was something that felt unfinished about a majority of the movie. Like it was rushed. Even some of the scenes look like they shot it in 1 day and slammed it into the final film without editing it.

When you said that the Hobbit Trilogy was announced, it was first announced as a single film, then duology, THEN trilogy when they realized it was a cash cow which explains all the filler. EDIT: love the video this is just a nitpick because I lived through it as a fan, who knew when it was stretched out for a quick buck with Hobbit being a children book at like 1/3 the size of Fellowship, like 1/9 the size of all of them.

While I enjoy the films as cinema, and they are certainly deserving of merit in that regard, I still say that Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the worst literary adaptations ever made. And a lot of the horrible choices made in regards to adaptation often lower the quality of the story as cinema: The dispensing of Tolkien’s morality. The disregard for proper tone. The elasticity of pacing. The flattening of narrative. The interminable battle scenes. The complete destruction of characterization. The degradation of Tolkien’s prose, reducing beautiful sentiment to corny greeting card mush. The relentless trivialization of the story. And perhaps most egregiously, the facile appreciation of the book thinly veiling a profound and contemptible lack of comprehension of its themes. This is in addition to the enthusiastic copying of an alarming amount of shots, scenes, and entire sequences from Ralph Bakshi’s animated adaptation from 1978. While it may be true that Jackson’s interpretation of The Lord of the Rings is far greater qualitatively that his interpretation of The Hobbit, well... that isn’t really saying much.
