  • Another Pentax video featuring a rather odd entry into the lineup, the Pentax Z-XM coupled with some classic Bronco Backstory it is the definition of a guilty pleasure camera that I can’t wait to use more.

I think there is something powerful in letting go of aiming for photographic perfection for each shot. Sometimes the fun and the spontaneity of using something less capable can lead to better results than lugging the studio lights and large format camera around.

Another camera you might like is the Pentax Z20p. It has all of the above, minus the shutter dial. It uses a retro LCD panel instead. It has some pretty sweet functions for it's time. You can rewind your film mid-roll and the camera will store that as a memory function so you can swap out or resume the rolls. This to me is a function on Later Pentax film cameras that isn't talked about enough. Mine came with a sweet add on hand grip that makes it more ergonomic. You can pick them up pretty cheap. Give them a try with the affordable FA autofocus lenses too. A perfect system for programmable, yet point-and-shoot style with AF!

    I have a canon A1
    I have a Mamiya C330
I have an old Zeiss super ikonta 532/16 with a 80mm Tessar f2.8 lense, all working so nicely....
But then I look to the old plasticky 35 mm point n shoot olympus zoom camera, and my feelings go wild, wilder than all the cameras above
bc this one got story I can rely to, I project myself and my history on it. And I ain't feeling guly at all, just proud :) as a young cowboy on ridding for the first time on his dad's horse

I have the Pentax MZ-3 in black and it's one of my favorites - even though it has that plastic gear that might break at some point.

I went ahead and took the plunge on this one and, I gotta say, with that 40mm, it beats the handful of 80s AF prime point and shoots I've been trying this year by a mile. There are only 2 things that, for me, would make this better: 1) Either a bigger viewfinder LCD or a diopter. Apparently I need. +1 mag. Gotta order it separately for as much or more than the camera. 2) Compatibility with Pentax DA autofocus lenses. I happen to have a 28-70 AF that works on, say the ZX-60, but not the -M. I get that with AF maybe it wouldn't be an "M," but I'm not sure if they released any other ZX model that supported both manual and af lenses, with full exposure knob controls.

I love using my Pentax MX , or one of them since I have more than one body… the smc-m glass is so underrated in my opinion! I have a SF7 that I got to resell but… I decided to keep it even though the way it works and the feel is so diferent than the MX, so much electronics but… it has something that made me fall in love, and I get to continue using my beloved Pentax lenses 🤩. That’s my “guilty pleasure” camera 😁

If it makes you want to shoot, use it. The desire to take photos is more valuable than taking photos on better gear that you’re less motivated to use.

I have a similar feeling about a Minolta 3xi. Cheap and plastic, but they just work over and over again. I think I have about a dozen of them acquired over the past 20+ years because they’re always incredibly cheap.

Dont fix that one. Buy an ZX-5n (or even better hunt down an MZ-3), steal your ZX-M focus screen and throw it in there, get a brass gear for it from china and youll have a winner. That setup paired with the FA 43mm 1.9 has been my point and shoot/pocket slr for a couple months now and its just incredible - full choice from complete auto everything to all manual and everything in between in just about the smallest lightest slr package you can get. The DA40mm 2.8 is also a great option, you lose aperture priority but get an even more compact overall package.

The MZ-3 in black and the 43mm is also my setup. Imo it's one of my goat setups.

Old cameras are cool and fun to use. I have a Pentax MV and two K-1000s . Fun to shoot, cool to carry, and I look forward to getting out with them this summer.

I've always just got these with something else I've purchased. Then, afterward, would either marketplace it or send them to goodwill...
However, they are starting to move online...

I just got a "Probably working" Pentax Z-1p which was sold in a slightly scammy way failing to mention the mirror being locked up 😓😅 however, I'm going to try fix it. I fixed an EOS 1 once, but there is annoyingly little information about the high end Pentax's out there. But I'll try :) It doesn''t do anything apart from show some menus and then completely locks up showing the low battery icon if you try shoot it with no noise at all. It's going to be an "adventure" I already really like how it looks.

Nothing "guilty" about that pleasure. I picked up one of those after my K-1000 jammed on the night the Bulls won one of their championships (I think it was Michael Jordan's last). Unfortunately, I realized my eyesight was worsening and I needed to switch to an autofocus camera, but there wasn't a whole lot of camera stores that carried the K-Mount autofocus cameras or lenses, so I ended up giving it to a friend and I bought a Maxxum 5. i still think about getting another one, now that my eyesight's more or less stabilized. Even with the Maxxum I ended up doing most everything myself except for focusing. It'd be nice to get back into that world again.

The design is good. Shame these are so poorly made and unreliable. I had an MZ5 back in the day but it did not last long.
When I sent in to Pentax for repair it took 6 weeks to come back and I received a different camera (but also not new). Lol
